Today we're looking at the historical appearance and clothing of Native Americans in the American West. For this week I used a variety of photo archives from the late-1800s, the Library of Congress' Newspaper Archives, and the primary source, 'The Annual Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, for the year 1898.' As for secondary sources, I used S.C. Gwynne's 'Empire of the Summer Moon,' and Andy Russel's 'Trails of a Wilderness Wanderer.' I recommend both books highly.
About Man vs History: Man vs History is a UA-cam channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
Music:
Main Track: Lost in the Forest - Doug Maxwell/ Media Right Productions. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.
Separate (Overlapping) Drum Track: Sioux Lookout - My original creation on drumbit.
Outro Track: Jazz Me Blues - E's Jammy Jams. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.

Man your video are amazing, as I love history and all related to native american, just to point out, like other, you pronounce one of those tribal name Nez Perce like an english man! eheh nothing to worry about, but it comes from french, and it means pierced nose, and its written Nez Percé, and pronounced "ney per-sey". I had to point it out since its common for english folks to pronounce it like you did! Thank you for your videos, they are always so great and love the content!
My character is fully dedicated to being a mexican cowboy / bandito / mariachi, fcourse theres multiples mexican attires depending on the job they had but can you do one of these for mexicans, just out of my own curiousity that is.

Thanks, Demo! Appreciate your compliment!
Yes
The UA-cam algorithm supports quantity over quality sadly.
@@dmcd3895 UA-cam has been pretty good to me lately, pushing through my monetization and recommending the channel to new folks, for which I'm incredibly grateful. But as you pointed out, I shoot for quality over quantity, which might not be good for the algorithm. The issue too is that with these videos I can't even estimate how long each will take. I'll dive into the archives and the research might take two days. For other vids (like this one) it takes two weeks (saying nothing of editing). So while there might be a couple week gap between vids sometimes, I hope the end result makes up for the wait, and I hope UA-cam considers the reason. Anyway, thanks for all the support, folks! You guys keep me motivated!

I forgot I was watching a video related to Red Dead. Just straight up learning stuff :)
Ha! That's how I like to do it. Sneak the education in there before folks notice.
Yea lol
Hi mate, I just wanted to tell you that although I'm Australian born, my Great Great Grandfather was North Dakota Sioux. Also, I trained as a costume designer for theatre many years ago and as such had to do in depth studies of the environments, psychology and available resources (dyes, fabrics available etc) which caused people of all nations to wear what they did. It's VERY time consuming to do such accurate research. I also just recently started playing RDR Online (I'm one of the oldest dedicated gamers right from the beginning of it all... way back to Intellivision's PONG... I'm 53 years old lol) and you've done an AMAZING research job for this, you're right, no one has done it in this sort of depth before... my Grandfathers would be proud and thankful for this. I certainly am. Absolutely WELL DONE and because of your dedication to detail... subscribed! Looking forward to more good stuff from you ans wish you all the best for the New Year ahead. :)
Thank you, Dave! It's crazy to think my videos are reaching folks in Australia! Your work in costume design sounds a lot like the research I do for these videos. Pretty cool. I appreciate the kind words, and welcome you aboard the community, my friend!
@@ManvsHistory Cheers mate. Yeah, we're watching it here in Oz. Trained in Costume Design and ended up mainly being a Set Builder instead lol ... anyway, thanks for the reply. Look at those numbers under the video and always remind yourself how many people appreciate your time. :)

Honestly, I would love to see a Native American expansion with its own mini-campaign where you earn clothing, but also skills and trick shots with the bow and arrow much like how the bounty hunter role allows you to learn things with firearms. It would be cool if they even research some Native American folklore and include it into the expansion and really put effort into bringing that into the game, not only for fun but educational.
In RDO you learn the lean over on your horse which you learn from the natives, which would be a great stepping stone
Today I learned that Native American dress was categorised. It’s not really something I thought was a thing lol.
Natives might not have done it, but the Bureau of Indian Affairs certainly did.
I love native American culture and history and like to think i know a fair amount that's why I created a native character on rdo but even I didn't know the US brought in laws to make them cut their hairs, how much their culture and freedom was absolutely ripped from them is heartbreaking.
@@aes0p895 Canada sterilised them til 2017 if I remember
@@aldworth33 yes it’s heartbreaking. I was taught this in my school on my reservation. Our elders taught us the truth about everything that happened to our people, instead of learning about the people that made us lose our culture and language😂🙂 a.k.a “the white man” a.k.a “The Colonizers” aha jokes. I’m proud to be indigenous🙌🏽💯. I do hope to one day see us natives rise and make our voices be heard. Cause nowadays we just be left out in society. But We’re still here. And that’s good you made a native character to show respect for us, and our culture. Mostly I be lowkey mad for no reason when a non native person creates a native character just for the heck of it and doesn’t even know anything about my people. But that’s just how I be lmfaoo. But you seem to know enough about us. So, “RESPECT” to you.✨👍🏽
If you want the Wapiti, choose Lakota outfits, if you want Dutch’s Tribe, choose partial Apache clothing. For criminal Dutch’s tribe, add bandolier, hats and military coats.

From a Seminole-Mvskoke woman, I thank you for making this. I made a Mvskoke character and it was hard find the clothing I needed for my character's tear dress. I have her dressed usually in men's clothing because it fits her backstory. I have two other Native female characters as well. One if Apache/*Red Wolf, and the other is Choctaw-Apache/Yaqui(Mexican tribe). They too wear more masculine clothing most of the time because they're both bounty hunters.
*The Red Wolf tribe is a fictional tribe from Red Dead Revolver that Red Harlow is kin too. The reason she's part Red Wolf is because I roleplay as Red Harlow's daughter
Very cool!
As a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe still living on out reservation I appreciate this video and his information 😂
Love the idea of earning cosmetics through achievements. They could do so much fun stuff. Also they could include things that you can only get by picking it up during specific story missions and things like that.

Your work has always been incredible!
This video has been my highly anticipated as a indigenous person (WMAT & Navajo) I love the quality and accurateness of your videos. I've been running around RDO as an Apache scout. Your guide for customization is much better than what I've seen on r/reddeadfashion, some of their native customization is very cringe. Ha! Happy to help, buddy.
For the female Native wear, the most accurate you would be able to get is the Stringham shirt paired with the Kamassa skirt, but Rockstar made these two options incompatible with each other.
The best I could do for a traditional look is to use either the flora corseted chemise in the black and gold color or the laborer overshirt in the brown dotted color. Over this I wear the dark or lighter hide-colored outdoorsmen vest, depending on weather I'm making a dark tanned hide outfit or a lighter tanned outfit. Overtop I wear a Fuentes poncho in either the darker or light colors (again depending on the shade of the outfit), with any color of Zapata headband of your choosing to finish up the top half.
Not that it matters or the tribal look historically, but I also use the goodman gun belt and holster to fit the look.
Moving onto the lower half I vary from historical in some ways just to achieve a more pleasing look, so forgive me if everything I mention isn't 100% accurate.
Starting off with the more accurate look I wear the Kamassa skirt in dark or light tanned hide colors paired with the Cibola or Brindille boots in matching or contrasting colors to the other hide colors. Alternatively, I will wear Lawncliff, Plata, Tied, or Lightfoot pants in as close to matching colors as possible for a more scout look to my female character, alternating between the Brindille, Cibola, or Hightop moccasins depending on the look I'm after.
When wearing pants I will often add a Farnholme bandolier to represent the medicine pouch worn by Native Americans.
Getting into glitched outfit territory, I will sometimes add one of the legendary animal heads to any of these outfits to either act as a "spirit animal" roleplay element, or to mimic the use of animal hide camouflage when Natives would hunt herds at close ranges.
I again break from what might be historically accurate again when making winter wear.
Opting to add an animal head (glitched) to one of my warmer weather outfits for started I will either wear a poncho, or the Maerbay coat that closest matches the animal head (currently I wear one of the buffalo heads as they match almost perfectly). Choosing pants and gloves that match in color to the coat I then wear the strayhorn boots in as close to matching as well. Any high collar shirts will work to cover your characters chest under the coat, but I often wear the Stringham shirt under my outdoorsmen vest when wearing the pants.
Again, I know most of this isn't really historically accurate to the time period, but I am trying as hard as I can to adhere to a more traditionally tribal playstyle as possible with the limitations that Rockstar has in the game.
(edit) For anyone wondering why I didn't choose other options, I have only owned the game for less than a year now and am missing all of the Outlaw Pass items along with most of the limited stock options in the game. As Rockstar brings back items, I will update my looks with what I have available to me.
You should make a historical accurate outlaw that would be awsome

@@ManvsHistory Hey just an Idea for another video: what part of the rdr2 map would be more usual for which indian tribe :P (sorry for my rusty english)
Another good idea for a Video would be a evaluation on the rdr2 story mode Indian's attire on characters like Charles, Eagle Fly, Rains Fall etc
This was great, I used my free apearance change to make a native caracter, super cool thanks ! Your channel makes me learn more than my actual history course!
Very informative video, crazy how you can create videos of such high quality and yet be such a small channel. I look forwards to watching you grow!
2021 is gonna be BIG!
