All of her music is very well thought out and precise. Every one of her songs is how she wanted it. At first glance some people may think that her music is like an unplanned jam session, but they are a true work of art.

Janis Joplin is my all-time favorite female singer ever!!! she may not have been on this earth very long and her career was only a few years, but she made a huge impact the soulfulness she carries. I just love her raw sound.

Summertime is one of those songs that always "work" and give the artists the possibility to put their own touch to it, and to shine. I love the Ella Fitzgerald version, I love the Billie Holiday version, the Nina Simone version and probably half a dozen others. And Janis Joplins take on that song is another great one.

“One of rock’s finest females.” That was how my oldest friend described Janis. I always agreed. In fact, it occurs to me now she could be considered one of music’s finest females period, by some. I wouldn’t discount that, either. And I always love that her vocal raspiness was natural, not something she tried to add for effect. That was her singing voice and she just went with it. And she always had some soul and bluesy style, as well. Which was completely natural, too, so really. She was just true to herself as a singer, and there was no reason not to be.

I also much prefer the studio version, however I would add that there is enough difference between that and this live version in terms of both Janis's vocal performance and the instrumental part that it is well worth hearing both of them just for the contrast.

Janis Joplin was such a great, gutsy singer who always wore her heart on her sleeve, wringing out so much emotion from every verse she sang. I sometimes wonder what sort of career she would have enjoyed had she not tragically joined the "27 Club". Perhaps she would have become an arena act by the 1980s, doing duets with the likes of Eric Clapton and Bryan Adams, like her contemporary Tina Turner. "Summertime" seems to a song which has been covered by almost everyone, including Kiri Te Kanawa! If you check out Ricky Nelson's version, it sounds like a mash up between Gershwin and Deep Purple, as the riff to Deep Purple's "Black Night" was "inspired" by the bassline in Nelson's cover.

Hello Aaliyah, Janis's performance and that of her band are incredible, they really make you emotional and move you almost to tears. It is an old acquaintance and I had already heard the song before, but now with your reaction I have been able to enjoy it in a different and very special way. I didn't know there was a version with Ella, I listened to it and they are both incredible. I don't know if you noticed a bit of African-American influence in Janis' singing style, or am I imagining it? A suggestion for a next reaction would be to Nina Simone with the song Feeling good. Greetings and a hug from Mexico City.

The thing that I really like about this reaction, you go into it with a bias of having a very different genre, but right up front tell us that you aren't an expert and that you're learning. That's a maturity that should be appreciated. You are doing a reaction video to someone who is very different than you and realizing the brilliance of it. That's a very good job by you. You have a beautiful voice. I hope that as you continue in your career that you can develop the added soul that Janis put into every note that she sang. Thank you for this reaction.

Wow seeing you digging Janis from the get go was an incredible experience! I'm in my 30s, and i rediscovered Janis Joplin at a difficult time, when i was about to have major heart surgery. Janis to me is a perfect illustration of the value of emotional and "rough" singing styles and why it's evocative.
Some of Joplin's inspirations to her singinging style were black blues singers, like Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton. Ultra american influences for an ultra american singer.
Love from Sweden❤ (Joplin's other perfomance from Stockholm "Work me Lord" is among the very best too!)

BALL AND CHAIN, a song by Big Mama Thorton that Janis heard one day, was her first major performance at the 1967 MONTEREY POP INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL... which also included the first U.S. performances of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Who. It also feature Otis Redding before he tragically died.

Thank you Aaliyah for another interesting exploration of that, which keeps us alive, - MUSIC!
What you hear here is the sound of Southern Comfort! 🍾🍾
My parents introduced me to Porgy and Bess when I was smaller that a mushroom! Since then, I've probably listened to every available version of 'Summertime'.
I must say, that these days I lean toward the Walker Brothers' version... I find the austerity of the sound suitable.
Regarding Janis herself, my favourite is probably 'A woman left lonely'.

A humble advice: Please don't do like almost every "reacter" does - constantly pausing the music. Listen to the full piece and make your comments after that. Compare it to reading a book - you read the entire bok before you make a review. It seems like the typical American way - not being able to focus more than 30 seconds at a time. Thank you.

She does a great job. Why would she wait until the end of the song and forget about a particular point she wants to talk about. If she writes it down without stopping the song, well, she's missing parts of the song.
If you're reading a book for enjoyment, you read through. If you're doing a review of the book, wouldn't it make sense to stop reading and jot down some notes so as not to forget. With all due respect, I disagree with your comment.

Good way to get the video taken down with a copyright strike.

@@julianhinojosa9695 Your comment makes no sense. Of course you cannot review a book after after reading a few chapters - you can make a mental note as you continue reading. Same with a film review - you have to see the entire film before you can give an opinion. But like I said - it seems to be a matter of being able to focus on something for a few minutes. With that being said, I have no disrespect for Aaliyah's singing,

Her vocal talents are lost on me. I like the song though and the psychedelic sounds of the band.

To much stopping, talk over the music. Chopping it to death sucks
