Aaliyah, I just need to tell you that the audience member who looked so much in awe is a famous singer--Mama Cass. She had a career with a group called the Mamas and Papas, which was famous for its close harmonies, and then had a solo career. The expression on her face was the awe of an expert.
I’ve seen a lot of reactions to this particular performance recently, and listening to trained vocalists explain what I’m hearing makes the song even better. Janis ran on pure, undiluted emotion. R.I.P.
If I remember right I believe the Mama's and Papa's were the organizers of this first real rock concert that introduced so many great rock stars to the world.
That audience member was Mamma Cass, member of The Mammas and the Poppas and a successful solo career. A great singer in her own right. Her mouthing wow to the camera is a real tribute in and of itself.
This concert was when Janis had her big breakthrough. She was mainly just on the west coast before this. She was polyphonic she could sing 2 notes at the same time. She put 120% of her soul into every song she sang. There will never be another “Pearl”.
In fact,I believe they picked up 7 tones,in one wail once, which I could be wrong, but I thought it put her into the Guinness book of world records. Janis could sing in chords. What a shame she passed so early. Although I don't buy that she did such an enormous shot of heavy dope, proceeded to go downstairs, get a pack of Marlboro reds from the cigarette machine in the Landmark's lobby. Chatted it up with the night clerk cat for 10 mins, while she smoked a cigarette, walked back upstairs, began to get undressed, out of her jeans, and THEN pitched forward hitting her face, breaking her nose on the nightstand, and passing away between the bed and the stand. I'm Apt to think she either tripped,or she was given a purposefully delivered hot shot ,after getting back up to her room. I've seen folks drop out from shooting heavy dope, and they go down almost immediately. And,if we're to believe the stuff was 10x stronger than what the normal to heaviest junkie could shoot, without becoming incapacitated? I'm more Apt to believe she got those hourglass heels of her sandals caught in the shag carpeting, while having her pants down around her knees, getting into bed, (and the combo of being high on top of that since she hadn't used for 6 months to a year before that evening) I mean, we can't take the word of Thomas Nagucci (coroner to the "stars") Let's all remember,he's the one who told us all that Marilyn Monroe's death was a "probable suicide", only to recant years later, when it was learned actual tissue samples from M.M.'s autopsy "went missing"? And she had the equalivalent to 47 Nembutal capsules taken all at once, found in her bloodstream. Yet, no pills, capsules,or even the bright yellow dye the capsules were colored, were found in her stomach or small intestine...? So, forgive me if I call B.s. to how he says Janis died...When the man tells everyone he thinks MM after excluding all the evidence that didn't support suicide or accidental O.D. "Left only one conclusion. Miss Monroe was likely, the victim of a homicide." But he was too scared of the Kennedy's CIA and the Sam Giancana crime family. Janis had a lot of followers, and could have definitely started a revolution, had she the mind to. But, she was about the music, and not politics. But she was certainly on Nixon's enemy "watch" list, with John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix Jim Morrison and many more, who ended up dead. And his "war on drugs" disaster, to this day. That Thief in the night, SOB. Then Regan, with Oliver North, smuggling Cocaine into the U.S. with "Freeway Rick", who discovered how to cook cocaine into crack, and devastating our black communities, and poor folks of every ethnic background, filling our streets with poor unfortunate souls who became desperate for one more little rock); giving guns to the Contras, in exchange, while his wife is saying "Just Say No!" GTFOMF with that Bullsht." Oliver North spent minimal time in club fed. Then got his own show on Fox News. Regan paid nothing for what he had done. Yet, Freeway Rick? Still in Prison today? Sorry for the rant .
I'm an old man who grew up listening to the music you;re exposing yourself to. Let your self-education into these artistic geniuses be the mother of your own invention. They are showing you what is possible with genuine talent. I am delighted to witness you, on the launch pad of your career. Let these forgotten voices fuel your arc. Aim HIGH.
Janis truly had one of the most distinctive voices in rock, of any male or female singer. Her vocals were definitely unique- not just any singer could sound like that. She had that more soulful, tempered tone, and then she could just unleash her vocal distortion and go wild. I think she was very naturally gifted, and an incredible performance like this was just her authentic artistic self up on stage, or anywhere she sang.
Someone mentioned Mama Cass as the amazed woman in the audience, look her up by name; Cass Elliott. She was a star in her own right. Janice, though, Janice was a force of nature unleashed by music.
Couple of things. Cass Elliot had never heard Janis before this. They became friends and sang together on a couple of occasions. Monterey was actually put together by John Philips, the leader of The Mamas and the Papas, and he brought lots of mostly unknown acts including The Who from England and Jimi Hendrix, inspired by folk festivals. As a result of her two performances here, she got the first real record deal that brought her fame, allowed us to enjoy her genius and finally made her crash and burn way too young. More than half a century has passed and she is still a powerful emotional lever for many of us the world over.
As an opera singer, you may be familiar with Gershwin's opera, "Porgy and Bess" There is a great version of Janis performing "Summertime" from this opera...
I've seen several of these videos of Janis to check out the reactions. Yours is the best by far. You are SO genuine and totally captivated. I was around eleven the first time I heard Janis. She gets into your soul...
Hi Aaliyah! Monterey Pop is an amazing film. I discovered this documentary at a young age, and it completely changed my understanding of music. One of the highlights for me has always been this performance of Ball & Chain. Janis Joplin doesn't just sing the song; she rips off her mask, the one we all wear in public, and gives us a clear view of the emotions lurking beneath it. There are these precious artists from time to time who can make us feel what they're protraying. Janis was one of those precious gifts. You should check out her songs Cry Baby and Piece Of My Heart. Great analysis, Aaliyah!
Janis live touches my primal self. Anytime I hear her live performances tears well up. Monterey was the transition into modern rock with established acts but also up and comers The Who, Jimi Hendrix & The Who. It is worth watching the whole weekend. Also recommend the Doors and Cream from mid 60’s who in my opinion started modern rock.
You should check out her live version of the 1930s song, 👉 Summertime 👈 A lot of people has covered that song but Janice has Probably the best version that's ever been done. This song is pretty good but everybody is on what I called mind altering libations.. 😂
One of the brilliant artists who died in the late 60s / early 70s at the age of 27. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison of the Doors, and Janis. We lost a lot of talent too early in those days, who knows what they could have achieved had they lived longer.
An even more amazing live recording of her doing this song is on the album Cheap Thrills by Janis joplin, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The whole album displays her talent to the max. Ball and Chain was originally written and preformed Big Mama Thornton - the famous American blues singer.
She’s the queen of feeling. Also, it worth noting that she perform under so much emotional dysfunction, most likely super high in drugs and drunk, and she still delivers quite the performance. She’s a force.
The above footage is of the day Janis Joplin aged 24 yrs old was 'noticed' by the "big people of the music-world". [In 1966, Joplin auditioned and joined a new rock band in San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The band grew popular in the Bay Area, and their big break came with their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, footage above.]
🌹I really appreciate you dipping your musical toe into the years of my youth ,JJ and a bottle of southern comfort was a respectful way to listen to Janice. We lost a beautiful woman the day she passed. Trust me you do her proud. Thanks 🌹
Janis was relatively unknown outside the San Fran music scene when this was recorded, while Mama Cass was already well known as a vocalist in a group with several top ten radio hits by this time.
The lady in the audience is Mamma Cass of the Mammas & the Pappas ! Amazing group you should check out ! Since this was Janice's first big appearance Mamma Cass was watching all the new comers !
Yeah! I love Janis! Cool to see someone feeling the same way I did when I see Janis belt out a couple vocal crescendos. I was born the same year as the Monterey Pop Festival. I had eight older brothers and sisters who owned stacks of albums. Around the age of seven, I started putting their albums on the turntable. What a great music age to grow up in.
Great reaction. Your face said it all. Janis was singing but also arguing with the man who put her in a "Ball and Chain". She left her heart on that stage. I glad that you appreciated the talent of this amazing woman.
Nice to see you again, Aaliyah! Great reaction to the fabulous Janis Joplin! I can see others have already informed you who the audience member you noted was so I won't spend any more time on that. Before you finish with your journey through the catalogue of JJ songs be sure to hit "Summertime" a song she does which is from the musical "Porgy and Bess"!
The audience member is Mama Cass Elliot, a very well known singer of that time. And yes :) Cass looked like she knew she was watching a brilliant performance :)

I also love a ballad A Woman Left Lonely she sings beautifully. Turtle Blues is amazing, too. I could go on... I really loved your reaction. ❤❤❤❤❤ I didn't mention Mama Cass because I saw it already in the comments.
Janis was truly something special. So wild, losing herself in the performance. Her power, and her control and nuance were just amazing. She left us too soon.
Mama Cass Eliot lip reading "wow that was really heavy" - I learned that Cass was critical to the mixing of so many greats during that early period of Laurel Canyon (watch Echoes in the Canyon) featuring Joni Mitchell (California and Woodstock). Janis' studio version cover of the song "Summertime" is IMO one of the most sublime and unique vocals performed ever.....ever!

You should all appreciate how excellent a job that nameless drummer did on this day to hit those slow drum rolls like it was so simple and easy, It's hard for any good drummer to hide mistakes behind a slow beat. I had to replay this to focus on that drumming poetry closer again. The string instruments are okay too.
Thank you for your very active reaction to Janis. Seems you really appreciate the music. You even showed a lot of patience while the guy was tuning his guitar at the beginning.
Aaliyah, I just need to tell you that the audience member who looked so much in awe is a famous singer--Mama Cass. She had a career with a group called the Mamas and Papas, which was famous for its close harmonies, and then had a solo career. The expression on her face was the awe of an expert.
