You need to listen to the original studio version with Merry Clayton on female vocals. Blows any other version away, and Merry Clayton is just incredible!
Yes, Mary Clayton on studio version is classic!! They called her at like 3am to come lay down her vocals. Her voice cracks and they leave it in, as it’s actually a perfect fit.
I have been listening to this band since the 1960’s. I’ve seen them live, worn out their vinyl records and what makes me happy is seeing someone like you enjoying them as much as I did when I was your age 😎
I was 12 years old when this song was released in 1969…didn’t really know what it was about, but I could sure tap my feet, to the beat! ..now all these years later, to see & hear a young lady like you, reacting to that performance, brought me to tears..more proof that music transcends time. Thanks for sharing your reaction. I believe that performance was, “one for the ages”
You should really watch the Oscar-winning documentary '20 feet from stardom' - about some of the great back-up singers, including quite a bit on Lisa Fischer (and also segments with Merry Clayton, who sang the studio version). The documentary also have bits on Lisa's Grammy-winning single 'how can I ease the pain' - as well as Lisa's work singing back-up for Sting. '20 Feet from Stardom'
The Original album cut is best version! Mary Clayton's version, where her voice cracks from all the passion she puts into the song ! When she asked Mick if he wanted her to do it again,he said "No Way!" He knew he had Gold! Please revue that cut!
Despite your disclaimer, you are an expert. Your commentary is like watching an athlete explain a sports competition. I always learn something. Plus, you react to a lot of classic rock and grunge legends, among others.
This is my favorite band. I haven't seen this performance in a long time and I've always liked this one, even though it doesn't have Keith's signature guitar intro. They only did the intro this way at the stadium shows on this particular tour and I thought it was really cool. I love Lisa's humming and Chuck's piano at the beginning. The Stones have a great sense of how to turn something into a spectacle without going overboard and making it cheezy. They're so much more than just a rock band. Thanks for reminding me of why I'm a fan.
That was a fun reaction and what a great vocal performance by that woman. And not to make any comparisons at all, because they are both incredible in their own way, but you got to check out the original studio hit which is what we all heard on the radio all the time and what was on the record albums that we bought and the woman that sing that is Iconic because of her vocal performance on it. It was recorded many many years before this live performance.
Tell you one thing, Mick and Lisa were having an absolute blast playing back and forth with those lyrics. Master singers weaving a magic incantation of music and expression.
This song, and especially this version has given me goosebumps for many years now, everytime I play it. But your inspired, honest, unbiased and natural reaction to hearing it for the first time probably topped even that. You just made my day!! Thanks! I wish you all the best of luck in your carreer.
Nice live version and they are always great when they do it but you need to hear the studio original, one of Rock's greatest songs, often in the top ten of all-time best classic Rock Song lists. The Stones are always worth a listen, try Can You Hear Me Knocking, another all time Stones classic. Enjoy lovely lady! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎷🎶
When the Rolling Stones formed in London, England in the early 1960's, they were a cover band who played songs by R&B, blues and rock n' roll artists from America... Mick Jagger (vocals) and Keith Richards (guitar) were joined by Brian Jones (guitar), Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watts (drums)... After The Beatles broke big in 1963 in the UK and Europe (eventually America by 1964), record labels looked for British bands to sign... The Rolling Stones were signed in 1964 and released record w/ mostly cover songs and were marketed as 'the bad boys' of rock n' roll (The Beatles were supposedly the 'good boys')... By 1965, the band attempted to write original songs and it turned out that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were a very good songwriting duo - they eventually were nicknamed 'the Glimmer Twins'. In 1965, The Rolling Stones scored a huge hit single by Jagger/ Richards - "(I can't get no) Satisfaction" ... and were part of the 60's British Invasion of UK bands coming to America to tour and scoring hits. The band was open to making songs from soft ballads to rocking tracks to even country tunes... In 1968, heavy drinking and drug use resulted in guitarist Brian Jones leaving The Rolling Stones after numerous successful records... Brian Jones died tragically in 1969 after drowning in his own pool. Mick Taylor (guitar) had replaced Brian Jones in the band. The Rolling Stones kept scoring hits in the 70's as the album 'Sticky fingers' (1971) became a huge hit and the band became one of the biggest concert attractions around the world... More records followed, but internal dissent led to Mick Taylor leaving the band in 1975. Ronnie Wood (guitar) joined in 1975, and The Rolling Stones scored their biggest album 'Some girls' in 1978. By the early 80's, The Rolling Stones were more successful than ever, but Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were increasingly at odds... Despite the success of the 1981 album 'Tattoo you' and a massive world tour, Mick Jagger opted to focus on a solo career... The Rolling Stones would not tour for years as Jagger and Richards were not communicating in those years... In 1989, the wait was over as Jagger and Richards finally made peace and The Rolling Stones announced a new album 'Steel wheels' and a huge world tour... However, bassist Bill Wyman announced in 1992 that he was leaving the band and was never replaced... Darryl Jones became a session bassist for The Rolling Stones, who were Jagger, Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood. More hit records and major tours followed... Their last original album 'A bigger bang' (2005) was their 24th(!) US studio album and charted at #3 (US) and #2 (UK)... An album of covers ('Blue and lonesome') was released in 2016. In 2021, Charlie Watts (drums) passed away at age 80... The Rolling Stones would tour w/ session players and announced a new album 'Hackney diamonds' in 2023 w/ tracks recorded by Charlie Watts.
Great reaction, Aaliyah! It is nice to see you reacting to some of the golden oldie bands of our youth! The Stones had many amazing songs, and I believe "She's A Rainbow" is right up your alley, musically speaking! Also, if you enjoy live performances you should put on your list two songs by Queen: "White Queen" at the Odeon Hammersmith and "Love Of My Life" at Wembley 1986. If you have already reacted to any of those then please just never mind!!
Great song. I would have been eight years old when my parents bought this Rolling Stones ‘Let it Bleed’ album in 1969. I am glad you appreciate it as a trained singer you are.
Love your honest reaction. A lot of black folks learned to sing in the church choir. All rock music is rooted in the blues and a little bit of gospel. I think you can hear that in Lisa's singing.
Aaliyah, think of this..They just released another album, and the single "Angry" is receiving rave reviews, Mick has just turned 80, and still performing, with no sign of slowing down. They have released 31 studio albums, 13 live albums, 28 compilation albums, 3 extended plays, 121 singles, 33 box sets, 51 video albums, 2 video box sets and 77 music videos (some of those Idk what they mean, but it look's good on a resume!)...I was 7 when they came to the US in '64..My next birthday I will be 67..They are more than just a rock band. They are cultural icons...Nice reaction..You have a beautiful voice!
By a country mile my favourite rock n roll band. I have been listening to them for over 50 years and I still love them. Just for your own entertainment you might like to look at a documentary movie entitled '10 feet from stardom' about some of the great female backing singers. Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton, et al.
Late to the party, but not a patch on the original with Merry, and that goes for Jagger too, the whole song as presented here is actually fairly pedestrian from the whole band compared to earlier performances. Learn from their old stuff when they still had fire in their bellies
Mick is very old at this point. He can't strut about while singing his arse off like he used to. That's why he sounds like he's talk-singing. At his age, it's amazing that he and Keith survived so long living a life that would have killed one of us mere mortals.
And that background singer can hit even higher notes, probably can shatter glass, watch her live solo performance in Japan of the song "How can I ease the pain" and you will know what I mean. She won a grammy for her solo album, made no other albums and went back to singing background because she felt more comfortable in the background. Like others said, you need to watch the documentary "20 Feet From Stardom!"
I believe I was the person who, quite some time ago, recommended that you watch the great Lisa Fischer doing "How Can I Ease The Pain" live from her 1992 appearance in Japan with Lee Ritenour. In that performance you really get to see and hear her range, emotional interpretive abilities, commitment to each note, and her command of the stage. Lisa toured far more often and had far more performances as a back up singer with the late Luther Vandross for 25 years. Please give her Japan performance a look see.
The Rolling Stones been a while since I’ve heard these guys (don’t listen to them much). Great song and of course another fantastic viddie my friend. 💜
As noted below, the original studio recording from the "Let It Bleed" album is one of the most iconic rock songs ever recorded, and arguably the Stones' best. I would strongly suggest in the future, when listening to rock tunes, you go with the original studio releases...they almost always are superior to any live performance you can choose. There are exceptions, of course, but they are far and few between.
I was born in 1958. Baptised with a Triumph motorbike dripping oil on my head. I was fed on the Stones almost from the day they started - not a Beatles house here. Brilliant.
🌹you just amaze me to no end. You find stuff I didn't know existed until now, thanks for your exploration into my earlier years of experience in my musical wildness fun fun fun🌹✨️
This is arguably one of their best songs. Here it was highly stylised. The original recording was a story you should check out. The original female voice was legendary. Worth a read. The lyrics are not happy. "Just a shot away" is dark, very dark.
@@AaliyahCapili .....the song....and the performance are full of dark....evil subtext....the song was released in 69....several assassinations....war....drugs....poverty....scandal....genocide....mostly against BLACK PEOPLE....and they called the black woman....MERRY CLAYTON....in the middle of the night to sing the SCANDALOUS ....RAPE....MURDER section...she did 3 INSANE TAKES...and they used the the technically imperfect take......where her voice CRACKS....but she still sings ON KEY.....she has gone on record to say she was thinking about ALL OF THE INHUMANITY....she was paid....500 dollars....and she went back home to bed....she was ...pregnant at the time....and it is widely rumored that she LOST the infant....due to the strain of singing the song....LISA is of the age to have been a child....as i was when all of this was going on...NOTHING like this was ever heard on the RADIO BEFORE...the doom...and haunting ...tragic vocalizing LISA is doing at the beginning of the song has such....SUBTEXT....something for you to note....when YOU sing...what is....THE SUBTEXT....behind the technique and performance.....
The studio version of Gimmie Shelter was iconic. I forgot how good the Stones were at live show productions. This version of Gimmie Shelter just measured up to the studio version, and I didn't think that was possible. Great song! Great band! Great vocalists! Who could ask for anything more?
You know on first hearing you I could not believe you had never heard of the Rolling Stones, but on reflection, I was lucky to have been around when they were in their prime doing there thing, I was just a kid when I first heard them and being in England they were all ways on the radio and you were probably bought up around the classics, which I am still learning about so you deserve commendation for wanting to learn more, to open your mind educate yourself, hope this inspires you to do deep dive into them and learn more about what is said to be 'the greatest rock n roll band ' in the world. Nice reaction and credit to you👏
Came for seeing how you'd react to Lisa the Magnificent, stayed for the rest, LOL. Even if not a reaction, at some point you should also treat yourself to the studio version, where the equally incredible Merry Clayton, who was summoned at 2 A.M. or something like that to the studio, sang the iconic middle vocal eruption in one take. In the song, Mick Jagger can be heard in the background going "Yeah!" because he knew she'd nailed it!
I'll probably just say the same stuff everyone else says. Watch the official lyric video, to feel the great groove and understand the great lyrics to the song, and hear Merry Clayton's unreal vocals on the song. Watch the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, which talks about both Merry's incredible vocals on Gimme Shelter, other parts of her career, Lisa Fisher's incredible talent, and other "backup" singers. Sorry if it's repetitious.
I think you'd enjoy Alice Russell, a UK Soul singer, with a kind of similar feel to Lisa Fischer in terms of dynamics and control. Alice Russell does a great cover of the Ceelo Green song, Crazy. Worth a look!
The rolling stones make upward of 10 million dollars per concert. In 2012 concerts the average ticket price was at $1,000 per person, making it a very expensive affair for fans of the band.❤
Hey Aaliyah so glad to see another reaction from you, and great as always 🙂Hopefully soon you will get to Blackbird Live from Wembley by the band Alter Bridge. The song has a great message, great music, and of course great vocals. Till then take care and I will look forward to your next upload.
If you need someone to aspire to sing like? check out"Chuncho!" means( Jungle sounds or Forrest sounds)by the great opera singer five octave range Yma Sumac get the film clip of Yma in the Forrest singing to a parrot on a branch in Color! she is literally otherworldly!
If you want to see off the charts energy check out Tina Turner (65 yrs., old, mind you) I believe at Wembley stadium, probably around 15 years ago, I guess..Unbelieveable!...Unfortunately, like Charlie Watts (Drummer, Stones) passed recently..Tina was just an amazing entertainer...The story of her life is even more compelling.
Please Please do Lisa Fisher How can I ease the pain Live in Japan 92 then Rachelle Ferrell live at the Apollo with open arms. Watch your mind being blown. I’m sure they could sing opera…
IF i understood AC that this is the 1st Stones tune ever hearing, it is an excellent selection / and the comments on listening to the original version i could not agree more / wonderful reaction take-away. . . :>/
Aaliyah, you are a lovely and charming young lady and I love your reaction to this video. I can tell that you, yourself are a soprano. Just out of curiosity, do you consider yourself a lyric or coloratura soprano. Keep up the great work.
Lisa does herself proud here, but sadly, Mick's voice is already shot to pieces. Other great females vocalists have provided the backing to this song, like Fergie and probably the finest of all, Merry Clayton who was on the original recording. I'd have LOVED to have seen Tina Turner up on stage with the band for this song too, but I guess we'll never have that pleasure now she's sadly no longer with us. 🙋♂ Lovely reaction Aaliyah, thanks.
Not sure what year this was...the drummer, Charlie Watts, recently passed away but they also just celebrated their 60th anniversary since their first concert!! That's insane considering the amount of hard drugs some of the members have been consuming for decades. Even without the drugs, 60 years is an incredible feat!! ROCK ON, Aaliyah!! I expect to see you on stage in 2083! 😁😁
I saw the Stones play in England in the mid 1970's. But I saw nothing to compare to this version of "Gimme Shelter" They had no backing singers at that gig. I think they came years later. I saw the Stones at the wrong time !
Hey cutie, Glad your enjoying the second greatest rock band on the planet(The Beatles are number one of course) Love your reactions and your beautiful smile! 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋💋🦊🦊🦊🦊
Do you know how many old men died making this video, due to share exhaustion? None!! Old rock & rollers will outlast you in any game you want to play, any day of the week
Although she's got pipes, she doesn't come close to the singer's voice on the original, studio version. You thought this woman hit high notes? Compared to original, she never really quite hit the notes as they should be so she just sounded off-key
Iconic band. They come out just after the Beatles. The Beatles was considered the good boys and the Rolling Stones was the bad boys . In both bands there was controversy. Like the Beatles controversy was that at the height of there success Paul McCartney was supposedly killed in a car accident and they replaced him. They had a look a like contest and found a kid that looked just like him and also played bass. But I think he was left handed and Paul was right handed. There is a lot of evidence on UA-cam. But who knows. The rolling Stones controversy was the founder Brian Jones died under mysterious circumstances by drowning in his pool. There was a investigation but the was inconclusive. Pay offs??? Both bands started the rock pop genres. We didn't have as many celebrities in the 60s and 70s but the ones we had where HUGE ❤
@@stevenmeyer9674 just reporting what happened this stuff was real I was there.. Lol you know the Beatles didn't help the situation by putting stuff like 👉I Buried Paul👈

Definitely agree, this woman was great, but the version you frefer to is absolutely stunning. God, how I miss the seventies....
Yes, Mary Clayton on studio version is classic!! They called her at like 3am to come lay down her vocals. Her voice cracks and they leave it in, as it’s actually a perfect fit.
Not that I disagree but the one from the Voodoo Lounge concert with Lisa Fischer blew me away too.
There's a documentary film called "20 Feet From Stardom" it has Merry Clayton's isolated vocal from the original studio version.
I've worked with Lisa and she is a sweetheart of a woman. Pure class, silly and kind. And this woman can SING!
Oh wow, thanks so much for sharing
I have been listening to this band since the 1960’s. I’ve seen them live, worn out their vinyl records
and what makes me happy is seeing someone like you enjoying them as much as I did when I was your age 😎

Thank you very much🥰
They are "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World"
🥰
Greatest Rock n Roll Band ever 👍
🥰🥰🥰
This is arguably one of their best songs. Here it was highly stylised. The original recording was a story you should check out. The original female voice was legendary. Worth a read.
The lyrics are not happy. "Just a shot away" is dark, very dark.
Thanks for sharing 🌺
This is a Vietnam era anthem. The studio version with Merry Clayton is much more emotional....more trauma.

Title error: should be Gimme Shelter by Lisa Fischer (feat. The Rolling Stones). Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.
Thanks for the info🌺
The studio version of Gimmie Shelter was iconic. I forgot how good the Stones were at live show productions. This version of Gimmie Shelter just measured up to the studio version, and I didn't think that was possible. Great song! Great band! Great vocalists! Who could ask for anything more?
Many thanks for sharing🥰
You know on first hearing you I could not believe you had never heard of the Rolling Stones, but on reflection, I was lucky to have been around when they were in their prime doing there thing, I was just a kid when I first heard them and being in England they were all ways on the radio and you were probably bought up around the classics, which I am still learning about so you deserve commendation for wanting to learn more, to open your mind educate yourself, hope this inspires you to do deep dive into them and learn more about what is said to be 'the greatest rock n roll band ' in the world. Nice reaction and credit to you👏
Thank you very much for sharing💕
Came for seeing how you'd react to Lisa the Magnificent, stayed for the rest, LOL. Even if not a reaction, at some point you should also treat yourself to the studio version, where the equally incredible Merry Clayton, who was summoned at 2 A.M. or something like that to the studio, sang the iconic middle vocal eruption in one take. In the song, Mick Jagger can be heard in the background going "Yeah!" because he knew she'd nailed it!
Thanks so much for sharing 🥰🥰🥰
They put a monitor on Mick Jagger, he averages 12 miles per concert.
Many thanks for the info🌺
I'll probably just say the same stuff everyone else says. Watch the official lyric video, to feel the great groove and understand the great lyrics to the song, and hear Merry Clayton's unreal vocals on the song. Watch the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, which talks about both Merry's incredible vocals on Gimme Shelter, other parts of her career, Lisa Fisher's incredible talent, and other "backup" singers. Sorry if it's repetitious.
Thanks so much for all of your recommendations
Listen Lisa Fischer live performances of How Can I ease the pain. Nothing better!!
Thanks for sharing
I think you'd enjoy Alice Russell, a UK Soul singer, with a kind of similar feel to Lisa Fischer in terms of dynamics and control. Alice Russell does a great cover of the Ceelo Green song, Crazy. Worth a look!
Thanks for your recommendation🥰
Oh and one more, Betty Wright, No Pain No Gain Live! You won’t be disappointed!!!!!!

Sometimes you can analyse and sometimes you should just listen.
Thanks for the feedback
See her with backing girls doing 'Addicted to Love' with Tina in Arnhem, Holland.....if you can find the vid....
The rolling stones make upward of 10 million dollars per concert. In 2012 concerts the average ticket price was at $1,000 per person, making it a very expensive affair for fans of the band.❤
Oh wow thanks so much for sharing🌺
You need to listen to her singing Lisa Fischer live in Japan.
Hey Aaliyah so glad to see another reaction from you, and great as always 🙂Hopefully soon you will get to Blackbird Live from Wembley by the band Alter Bridge. The song has a great message, great music, and of course great vocals. Till then take care and I will look forward to your next upload.

Listen to the original studio recording and the raw power of Merry Clayton's voice.

Thanks for watching too
I saw them live before you were born, and now you are pontificating...funny.
Thanks for sharing 🌺
If you want to see off the charts energy check out Tina Turner (65 yrs., old, mind you) I believe at Wembley stadium, probably around 15 years ago, I guess..Unbelieveable!...Unfortunately, like Charlie Watts (Drummer, Stones) passed recently..Tina was just an amazing entertainer...The story of her life is even more compelling.
Thanks so much for sharing
Please Please do Lisa Fisher How can I ease the pain Live in Japan 92 then Rachelle Ferrell live at the Apollo with open arms. Watch your mind being blown. I’m sure they could sing opera…
Thanks for the recommendation
IF i understood AC that this is the 1st Stones tune ever hearing, it is an excellent selection / and the comments on listening to the original version i could not agree more / wonderful reaction take-away. . . :>/

You can try to reaction another song of Rolling Stones, ' You can't always get what you want ' in live with Choir...
Thanks for the recommendation
If you like this you should react to pink floyd the great gig in the sky ❤ it's beautiful
I have too, thanks for sharing☀️
Aaliyah, you are a lovely and charming young lady and I love your reaction to this video. I can tell that you, yourself are a soprano. Just out of curiosity, do you consider yourself a lyric or coloratura soprano. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much!!, i believe i am a coloratura🌺
There's the BEATLES AND THE ROLLING STONES ...TOP 2 BANDS IN THE WORLD ...THATS IT THE REST FOLLOW
🥰🥰🥰
Lisa does herself proud here, but sadly, Mick's voice is already shot to pieces. Other great females vocalists have provided the backing to this song, like Fergie and probably the finest of all, Merry Clayton who was on the original recording. I'd have LOVED to have seen Tina Turner up on stage with the band for this song too, but I guess we'll never have that pleasure now she's sadly no longer with us. 🙋♂ Lovely reaction Aaliyah, thanks.
Thanks for sharing
Not sure what year this was...the drummer, Charlie Watts, recently passed away but they also just celebrated their 60th anniversary since their first concert!! That's insane considering the amount of hard drugs some of the members have been consuming for decades. Even without the drugs, 60 years is an incredible feat!! ROCK ON, Aaliyah!! I expect to see you on stage in 2083! 😁😁
Oh thanks so much for sharing and i really pray so too that i can still sing that long🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰♥️♥️♥️
Never heard of the Stones? I'm the same, never heard of Mozart. I think he plays for Man City.
🌺
I think the guy playing acoustic is now playing back up guitar with Bonamassa? It looks like him, but I am not sure.
Thanks for the info
I saw the Stones play in England in the mid 1970's. But I saw nothing to compare to this version of "Gimme Shelter"
They had no backing singers at that gig. I think they came years later. I saw the Stones at the wrong time !
Thanks so much for sharing
I wish you would do Mick Jagger and Tina Turner at Live aid.

Rolling stones paint it black
😊
Opera Sucks! Rock n' Roll Rules!!!!
Although she's got pipes, she doesn't come close to the singer's voice on the original, studio version. You thought this woman hit high notes? Compared to original, she never really quite hit the notes as they should be so she just sounded off-key
🐂💩....
🌺
You should put a check on your conspiracy theories. Evidence on youtube? LOL!
@@stevenmeyer9674 just reporting what happened this stuff was real I was there.. Lol you know the Beatles didn't help the situation by putting stuff like
👉I Buried Paul👈
