Best female vocalist ever in my opinion. She kicked the door open for every female vocalist that came after her whether they realize it or not. Her rawness and unwillingness to conform turned the music industry on its head.

It’s her and Aretha for me EASY as the top 2 female recording artists ever.

Honey , I am blessed at 74 and look 40. I saw Janis twice once at Woodstock in upstate NY and here at the New Orleans Pop Festival. You have to hear her sing Maybe , an incredible song. I totally believe with Maybe , she was singing to a woman. She was both ways. She would sing if I could hold your little hand. Also Summertime was a old time Southern house keeper trying to stop the baby from crying ,so she could get back to the mother. Your daddy's loaded rich and your ma's good looking , so hush, hush baby ,, don't you cry. She was also known for swigging Southern Comfort on stage while singing.

Summertime is one of the greatest songs ever. It’s the most famous aria from the great American opera, Porgy and Bess. It’s been covered hundreds of time in so many styles. Janis’ version is among my favorites. She takes it to a new level.

Janis is phenomenal. That's what this song reflects. Those of us back in the day, well we just don't compare other talents to
"ACTUAL" talent of today because there is no comparison band or vocals. No metter who you are listening to.

Appreciate your reaction. Janis had so much soul you just felt it and heard it in her voice that projected her pain but gave a beautiful gift to the world that was that voice ❤

Don't forget she always had one helluva band behind her - I think this is with the original Big Brother and the Holding Company, with James Gurley on guitar. Blends Blues, Soul, R&B, and Acid Rock (think "Metal before Metal happened") all together seamlessly. Bass player puts in some serious WORK on this one, too! Let's hear it for the band!
And that chick up front ain't bad, neither! ;);)

Great track she was already a speed freak, LSD explorer, heroin addict, chain smoker and alcoholic but maybe that's why she sounds so good?
1969 and she died in 1970 at age 27 just one year later of a heroin mistake.

      Concert? NO..
janis was recording what ended up as her last album PEARL in Hollywood.. I used to hang out at this bar called Barney's Bearnery.. changed a lot now.. but still there.. in 1970..it looked more the way it was from 1920's..
it was the real hang out in 1960's-70's.. I was 18..
Anyway.. Janis by then came down from San Francisco.. popular.. recording Pearl.. I saw coming in & out of that place for weeks all through that summer of 1970.. she came w/ her posse.. all in their feathers & hippie glam..
then one Saturday afternoon.. she came in alone.. unusual.. my BF stood up chatted w/her & asked her what s he wanted to drink.. Southern Comfort.. bar was half empty as it was only like 2 PM.. she was bathed & perfumed.. cussing like crazy as her date stood her up. Brother no one cussed like Janis.. I was just wide eyed & a ll ears..
I was quiet.. BF told me.. say something.. as he knew I knew a lot about her music.. she usually ignored females.. BF told her.. janis.. want you to meet my GF.. barely looked at me.. BF kept poking my ribs.. say something.. she was cussing at the bar tender., Fina;lly.. I mumbled.. janis I liked your last LP..Kosmic Blues.. upon hearing this.. she practically knocked BF off his s tool.. & she gave a huge hug., & was thrilled I loved her music.. then she told me of this album she recording.. Pearl e tc etc.. She was great..
Many weeks later.. during the week.. I was talking to the short order cook.. as I watched him cook.. Janis came in.. Alone.. talking to bar tender Casey.. didn't drink.. she just stood by the bar.. there w ere some drinkers seated.. i was watching her.. they talked for long..20 mins.? I was chatting to Cook..when I saw her leaving.. Don't know what came over me.. I jumped up & went to next room where she was.. Jukebox was loud as usual.. she was almost the bar.. I kept screaming her name.. JANIS.. several times.. before she went down the stoop.. she turned around.. she heard me.. tried to focus.. saw it was me.. she screamed Hiya LIZ.. she remembered.. so I asked how her LP was doing.. said it was groovy.. she just left the recording studio wh was up the road.. Said a few more words.. we bid good bye..
then she was gone into the night.. next day.. breaking news..
it was so weird.. So no concert.. no party.. She went to her motel..etc e tc..

I just found your channel and this was your last reaction? I get that this can't be topped - it's sublime at it's best but you can appreciate music so genuinely that you MUST continue......... Another great singer from the time but complete opposite is Joni Mitchell. Try her live version of Woodstock or California. If Janis is the definition of RAW then Joni is the definition of ANGELIC
