Janis was born in January 1943. I believe she was from Port Arthur, Texas. She died in October 1970. She’d be 81 today had she lived. One thing was for certain, she was one hell of a blues singer.☮️💟
Janis Joplin was influenced by the blues singers of the 1920’s/1930’s and when she found out that singer Bessie Smith’s grave was unmarked she bought a gravestone for her. Janis was gone way too soon
I saw her perform in San Francisco either late '67 or early '68. We were out clubbing and happened to stop where she was performing, it was well worth the $5 entrance fee as she was a ball of fire.
I saw her in Pittsburgh. (I'm in my 70s too) Santana opened for her. She was taunting the cops who were there to "guard" us. They put the lights on and stopped the concert!!!
Hello my dear . This lady sang her songs with so much compassion. She is a treasure that is missed so much. It is a shame she never knew how much she was loved ❤. Let's enjoy.
Although Summertime is most often sung by jazz singers, it's actually a song (aria) from George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess. Janis' version is totally unique though. But Janis was a pretty unique lady and talent. Someone mentions Jimi Hendrix. Well, if Jimi took the guitar where it had never gone before, Janis did the same for the human voice.
Dear Sarah , I'm so happy that I saw you reacting to Janis to "Summertime" ... I saw how touched and surpriserd you were by the wonderful gift that JanisI gave to us with her music ! ❤
A Texas treasure. We had many talented musicians coming out of Texas around the same time. I was lucky enough to grow up in Texas in this era of music.
Janis, was one of the very rare people, who had a polyphonic quality to her voice, and could completely control it.. Thanks for the great reaction as always. You are a ray of sunshine my dear! ❤
Janis a girl in pain, expressed through her singing, a star that shines bright now in the night sky, along with jimi, and all the other greats. Never forgotten.
Wow your reaction made me cry. You described her as she was. Beautiful soul full of life and music was her story. Old soul, she was old before her time and why she could not stay here for long. She was a woman on fire. Thank you for bringing it all back for me. ❤
We can only imagine that, if she could express pain with such depth and character, she undoubtedly felt pain more intensely than most. She had an old, tortured soul.
She certainly did, and her story would make a great movie or prestige TV/streaming series. Can't believe there's never been a great one already...at least not that I'm aware of.
I've listened to every version of this song and this is the very best version of the song because it fits the feeling of this characters situation and love. I appreciate the fact that you realized all of this and said it better than I could.
What is wrong with her musicians? She liked raw music, not studio sound. World class corporations would not allow her to sing what she wanted, her way. I worked in music business back then. Like now is still a problem of who has right to lead. Look at Swift even she is re-recording her songs so she can own them. She wrote them, sang but can’t own them? Same old story. Greed by the untalented.
there are some great versions of this tune, Janis' is one of the best. I grew up listening to my Dad singing it in the Style of Paul Robeson, who had an exceptionally DEEP voice, one I just know would move you. The music is dated now but his voice remains pure, his versions of Old Man River & Swing Low Sweet Chariot were played at my Dad's funeral.
Hearing them for the first time when they first hit the music scene we were stunned knowing that we had never heard anything like them before , totally mesmerized by them when they preformed . no one like them had existed before and of course no one will ever equal either one of them . i remember when they died and I've really have never gotten over it and often think what could have been if they lived longer.
Her voice was insane, and no one singing in this style has _ever_ matched her...and never will! Hope she's chillin' up there with Hendrix, Morrison, Cobain, and all the other members of the oh-so-tragic "27 Club" (sorry I was too lazy to name them all).
Janis was so unique...I loved her way of singing. The only singer from that period that can remind me of Janis was the vocalist of Savage Rose, name Annisette
I love your review. And I wholeheartedly agree with you -- JJ's talent was not of this earth. It is frightening to listen to her. You don't know how far she will go, and you KNOW she did not hold back in any way. She would go wherever the music lead her, with the abandon of a wild animal. I worry that she will explode, or something. Actually explode.
Icon ? Almost a Loss ? Oh yeah and Overdosed junkie is no los. She did it to herself.same as so many others. SFC.D.WILSON U.S Airborne Rangers / Cavalry-SPFOR ret.

"I can't beleive a woman this talented walks the earth." Best compliment I ever heard! 😊
Janis Joplin sings with pure emotion 🎶
I was fortunate enough to see live in 68 at the Chicago auditorium with my mom and dad and my big brother….lucky me my folks were into music

WAY BACK WHEN...✨️
I saw her perform in San Francisco either late '67 or early '68. We were out clubbing and happened to stop where she was performing, it was well worth the $5 entrance fee as she was a ball of fire.
I told you hers is the best version. She is AMAZING.
I saw her in concert in the 60's in southern California, I was 15 & I'm 70 now. I've never forgotten her ❤
I saw her in Pittsburgh. (I'm in my 70s too) Santana opened for her. She was taunting the cops who were there to "guard" us. They put the lights on and stopped the concert!!!
I'll meet you there when they invent a time Machine.😥

So Well said
I was going to mention that the song was from Porgy & Bess, so thank you for saying it first.
Janis Joplin and Amy winehouse are my two favorite singers/artists of all time. Both were so special, unique and a once in a lifetime talent. RIP ❤
Yeah, Just Janis being Janis! My Girl and I truly miss her. It's so sad because she had soooo much to offer the world! Thank you Sarah!!!!!!!!
After 50 years Janis still sends shivers through my spine. I've loved her music since I first heard it in 1974
One of the best who ever lived...for a mere moment, god love her!
Listening to Janis always brings a tear to my eye. Her voice was like no one else's. Great review, thanks!

A Texas treasure. We had many talented musicians coming out of Texas around the same time. I was lucky enough to grow up in Texas in this era of music.
Janis always had a piece of my heart.
I just love the way you get so emotional over all the music you play.
She was amazing! I’ve never heard anyone like her 🎸
It sometimes sadly seems to me that those who have suffered the most pain produce the best music.
As always, your open and honest reactions are delightful

The fire that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.
Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. Janice lives through us.
Wow your reaction made me cry.

Janis was such a marvelous talent!! Gave so much pleasure!
Beautiful and thank you.

Janis was, is, always will be the truth, absolutely fire 🔥
Thank you for recognition using her
Another member of the '27 club' - too many lost too young
Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin, Brian Jones...
Piece of my Heart by Janis is another powerful song.
So ein tolles Lied - interpretiert von einer tollen Frau! Und eine tolle Reaktion.
Danke schön 😊
Janis is soo incredible

She is still my standing WCW her voice pierces my soul and hits me in the feels
The UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF BLUES !!! There will never be another, she sings with the Angels now R.I.P. Janis
Imagine what Janis could have done with world-class musicians.
What is wrong with her musicians? She liked raw music, not studio sound.
World class corporations would not allow her to sing what she wanted, her way.
I worked in music business back then. Like now is still a problem of who has right to lead.

Love Janis. Beautiful reaction
My 3rd favorite Janis song, behind "Kozmic Blues" and "Get It While You Can"
❤❤❤

Best white female blues singer.
Miss you doing whole albums.
Yes Sarah it's a loss just like Jimi Hendrix
So Sad 🥲

Name a modern day singerwho could match her on second thought Don't bother they don't exist
I love your comments and appreciation
JJ cannot be duplicated or improved upon
She was a whirlwind tour de force.
Her voice was insane, and no one singing in this style has _ever_ matched her...and never will!
Hope she's chillin' up there with Hendrix, Morrison, Cobain, and all the other members of the oh-so-tragic "27 Club" (sorry I was too lazy to name them all).
Please check out the studio version of this from the "Cheap Thrills" album. To me, it's way better.
My era and we loved her❤She would have been a year younger than me.
Work me lord live Stockholm 1969 is even better.
Check out her live version of "Cry Baby", "Ball and Chain live at Monterrey Pop ", "Maybe", and "Work Me Lord". All amazing.
Props also for the Holding Company!
Janis was so unique...I loved her way of singing. The only singer from that period that can remind me of Janis was the vocalist of Savage Rose, name Annisette
Check out the same concert, 1969, Stockholm live, Work Me Lord. You will be amazed.

Her best version of this is the Monterey pop festival, it WILL blow you away.
Not exactly. Janis doing "Ball and Chain" at Monterey is her signature performance.
If a lion could sing ~ this is what he would sound like!
Listen to her and the Deads Pigpen McKernan sing together, they were lovers and best freinds.
Try Summertime by the Zombies. It's very different.
She was a young girl with a very old soul. Humanity got cheated out of decades of JJ RIP
At this recording, Janis was a 26-year-old white woman with the voice of a 56-year-old black woman. She was gone TOO soon.
Listen to Ella Fitzgerald's solo live version. Different take but equally amazing.
one of the founding members of the "27 club"
❤❤❤❤❤❤ 👍
The Queen of Scream
The music didn't own Janis....she owned the music.
💯
xxx!
And to think, Jim Morrison once said she couldn’t sing the blues for shit.
There is women very badly hurt - so sad Shes' gone.
Try Minnie Riperton please.
Listen to Big Mama Thornton
I guess she wasn’t meant for this wicked old world. She went to a more enlightened place.
And a year later she was dead...
Janis was going to be a teacher. Glad she didn't.

Any one who gave something to others be their talent songs, their love,a child, their service what ever it was it's tragic period !
Who hurt you?
Alcoholism and drug addiction is a disease. Janis was suffering and needed help. How pathetic that you cannot see that, but choose to judge instead.
