The Ford has soft touch materials in the back only in the Titanium and Vignale version. ("...but that doesn't matter for this video, because I'm comparing the range as a whole.")
I know it's not always viable, but they should only compare spec for spec, completely pointless to compare an entry level Ceed against a range topping Focus.
Let's compare a range topping Ceed with an entry level Focus with steel wheel/plastic trims.
This is NOT the first time CarWow have compared a range topping Ford model against an entry level competitor car. Totally biased and unfair.
I get what your saying. But these specs are chosen because they are the same price point. Its like saying a top of the line A45 AMG is better than a top of the line Golf R when in fact thats how it should be since its more expensive. This is to show you what you get for the same money
This is how mad car journals are
@@nickwyllie7563 Are you saying the entry level Kia is the same price as the Titanium Ford?
@@ArtVandel Lol, dude is talking out of his ass.
You say the Ceed has soft touch materials in the back, then contradict yourself by saying only the Focus does...
Samuel Bomorse ok it’s just a simple mistake. I think it is something you can just move on from.
No the Ford has soft touch all over the door not just the top of the window
Lako crikey, who cares, get a life
He says that the focus is the only car which has soft materials ALL THE WAY into the back. He's not contradicting himself.
@@Alex-wu6ch he's talking about the the door tops. He only motions and touches the door tops.
I'm not complaining, just pointing it out as usually the editing is so brilliant.
Btw Matt, this new generation of Focus is no longer even sold in the US.. It is now entirely a German car.
Is it engineered by germans or assembled by germans?
Furthermore, the KIA Ceed is sold ONLY in Europe, and knowing that it's designed in Germany and manufactured in Slovakia makes it the most European car out of the 3.
It was always a German car
@@chrisdolmeth8603 both actually
@@chrisdolmeth8603 Yes and yes
Focus is now pretty much european.
It always was.
@@bamphmx-5548 true It always was As well As the Fiesta
As a matter of fact, all of these cars are pretty much German in terms of development, so it does make sense that they are very similar in concept.
Do the ecoboost engines still blow up?
Ikr
You mean European vs. European vs. European. Because the Ford Focus has nothing at all to do with Ford USA, it's always been a European model, 100% developed, designed, engineered and built by Ford Europe, with headquarters in Cologne, Germany. VW Golf is obviously German. The Kia Ceed has been fully developed in their European centers as well, and is built here too, while the vast majority of engineers and designers working in Kia are formed employees of European brands such as Audi, BMW, VW, etc. Why do you think Kia / Hyundai went from making crap cars for decades to all of a sudden making really good cars in a time period of only a couple of years?
He said a brand from the US, a brand from Germany and a brand from Korea. Ford is american, VW is german and KIA is korean. He was talking about the brand, and not the cars itself.
lol ya know the Ceed only appears to be European because they change its name depending on the region? search for Kia K3 and Cerato.
Different models... and Ceed still designed and built in Europe.
Thank god, imagine if the MK1 Focus has been designed and engineered for the US market. It would have been twice the weight, more body roll than a ferry in a storm and a torque converter gearbox i.e. instead of being a game changer it would have been SHITE.

@@BK-pb7bx that's funny isn't it
This is Europe baby
You forget to say about the abscence of the air vents in the back of the focus.... the vw golf has air vents for the passengers from the back. This is more relevant than soft materials, one touch for the windows and if the window goes all the way down...
I always put the removed parcel shelf against the back of the front seats before putting the rear seats down, then when you load the car the parcel shelf protects the back of the front seats from whatever you are loading, simples
I like how you explain the specs of those cars and in the reviews as well, so people can clearly see wide range and so no biasness whatsoever, plus your expressions which makes it great then :)
Ford is more German now than American actualy

@@theodorbean2604 First gen Focus wasn't even sold in US. US got first Focus 4 years after 1st gen ended in Europe.
Joe Black he means THE Ford, as in the subject of the video; the Focus. Not ford as a company. 🤦🏽♂️
Great job! I think this is one of the most expected head to head reviews.
Still waiting on the review of the new Mazda 3 (hatchback & sedan)
Ford has worked very hard to get this car to be an all-rounder i think thay have managed just that. .
Yes complete with a unreliable ecoboom engine that probably won't make it past 30 thousand miles without overheating and the worst customer service I've ever experienced in my life. I'll never touch a Ford again...
@@steeldevil98 which ford did you have? My father has a '13 MY focus Titanium and with over 160 000 Km on it and never had any trouble no overheating even when I was in Portugal in a region where it was 40+ degrees celsius (heatwave) and it worked like a charm... with A/C on as well..
@@_M27_ my first Ford was a 2.8 capri then a bunch of escorts and fiestas. But the last one was a focus diesel which had fuel pump failure then engine ecu failure then turbo failure which Ford tried to void my warranty by blatantly lying to me. Never again lol
If the new basic Focus is so good, what will the upcoming ST be like?
@@steeldevil98 sorry to hear that mate we did have a first gen focus (66kw diesel) and on that one we also needed to change the turbo and stuff but we drove over 450 000Km with that one lol we never had to do big changes on his new diesel focus
I have had all 3 of these over the last 2 and a half years.. And I was shocked to find the kia was most definitely the best to live with and overall the most reliable
Wheel size and tire combinations really affects handling. It would be nice to know with which ones were they equipped. Assuming the Ceed had the worst tires for those 16" size wheels, not the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 it has when equipped with 17". Oh and other versions have all automatic windows.
It's a shame this comparisons are never fair for the specifications compared. They would be a lot more useful.
how many times have you reviewed the golf everytime i watch one i know exactly what your going to say I LOVE IT!!!

As a golf owner I can say every new generation I see I know exactly what the review is going to be. "Infotainment a little bit bigger/better"... That's it.

Mat Watson, an issue which I feel Carwow could definitely address is keyless thefts. I think it would be great if you could make a video encouraging people to buy steering wheel locks and keeping keys in cases away from the front door. My car was recently stolen and after speaking to neighbours and staff in different stores such as Halfords, I've gathered that keyless thefts are such a regular occurrence!
Please could you do everyone in the Carwow community a favour by making this video - after all we're saving money on brand new cars which we don't want to go missing :)
So, Matt.. In your standalone review of the Focus, the white ST-Line had scratchy plastic doortops. This one now has soft touch material. Could you explain the difference here, is it a trim-based variation, a mid-year update, what's going on? I'd like to know what to expect from my soon arriving Active estate
Loved this video, each video of urs seems to improve more and more, good work!
I find it quite funny how the track is just down the road from Ottershaw where I lived 😂😂, yet I didn’t know they existed until 3 months ago
Well... focus and ceed are beautiful cars.... golf looks like something from the 90s... actually... i actually think the golf have been looking the same since middle of 90s.. both outside and inside. Actually most vw cars....
Ford and kia always make cars thats beautifly, sporty, exclusive, practical etc...
If i want a vw i can just buy a škoda.. they look better, more exclusive and they are more practical.
And i still don’t get the thing with soft touch vs ”scratchy plastics”... doesn’t matter what material..normaly people don’t scratch their nails or at all touch the places you check.
Golf for me, interior- and exteriorwise. I like to feel relaxed and free and hence I do love that unintrusive, classic design with its clear lines pretty much. And there is that feeling of "Vorsprung durch Technik" in it as well.
It seems that the Focus is the one who uses ,,Vorsprung durch Technik'' better than the Golf, VW Group got lazy relying on their successfull past and they start loosing ground not just to Ford but other Car brands as well, whyle Ford has learned from it's mistakes and Failure's and it did become a pretty good Car Brand nowadays, equal to VW in their segments, and equal to other Car Brands in other segments, I never thought I say that, but good job to them, hope VW will pull their heads up from their past dreams and start to do it again like they used to do. Cheers!!!
Rear bench experience is much more than soft touch trim and window opening. How about ac vents, cubby spaces, cup holders...?
Just a suggestion you could add as another review the sound system of cars
03:40 There's some bloody good editing there. I wouldn't have known it was from another video if it wasn't for the gear knob changing.
Finally the video i was waiting for ever since september 2018!!!
You can get the ford focus rear parcel out by twisting the plastic thingy on by 90 degrees i think. I know i managed to find it the first time I tried to fit my winter tires in the back.
And BTW.. Not all focus trims have soft touch materials in the back.
Having recently looked very hard all all three, and test driven a VW and Ford, It's a Focus Titanium X that been sat in my drive for the last 2 weeks.
Fully agree me and the wife have titanium x I have the estate whilst she has the hatch .both 1.5 tdci drive and handling superb technology is mind blowing 😁
I just bought the ST line X 1.5 diesel and it's amazing and quick
i just bought the ST line hatchback 1,0T EcoBoost.. 2021.. nice Car :-)
I went with the Ceed. Though check out the others. As a family reliability is key over how fun it is to drive and the Kia's 7 year warranty gives me confidence.
What made you choose the Kia over the others? And are you still happy with your choice?
@@hasibahmad2767 7 year warranty on the Kia was the main selling point along with Kia having better reliability as I was buying a 5year old car and reliability is key for me with a young family. The focus felt nicer and more sporty to drive though, but if you are thinking of getting the ecoboost version I would do some research first... Seems badly designed and prone to engine failure in the longer run, which without warranty would make the car basically worthless. The golf was out of my budget. Still happy with my choice.
Nice background music :)
Surprised by the outcome of this comparison btw
Personally I'd pick the Ceed. Best looking, best equipped, has the best technology and has independent rear suspension on every model. The 7 year warranty doesn't hurt either.
Admit it, you like ceed
You'd be the first then, most people can't see past the badge
Me too. That would be a no brainer for me.
Best technology? VW has that one I’m afraid. The system in the golf is as responsive as the ones found in Audi’s, Bentleys and Porsche’s. The next best would be BMW but sorry Kia is nowhere near, I would rate Volvo and Land Rover higher still yet
@@Horizon301. the Ceed's technology is better than the Golf's. The only thing the Golf does better tech wise is the virtual instruments. The Ceed gets way more tech as standard than the Golf.
You guys should make more kind of videos like this. Like every 2 years automakers release a facelift from their models
That jerrmy clarkson imitation though 😂😂😂
I don't know, but I feel that between driving them, the wheels and tires made quite a bit of difference. The best would be to test similar priced models to know witch one is the best for the buck. Otherwise you can buy a more exensive car and that is usually better...
Nice colour Combination. Blue, Yellow, Red 👍❤
Still ordered the golf highline busines r 😂 with the 1.5l, number 1 for me.
You did not mention the warrentee periods, a big deal for your resale value and confidence if keeping the car for a long time.
What matters is mechanics...all good cars..with the focus having the edge on reliability and fixability price wise
That is a really helpful video post... 👍
Waaaaait a sec, the Ceed has an adjustable boot floor, so the cover should fit underneath... damnit Matt

what engine size should i get for the golf? I've been trying to decide for months and you didn't say in this video. I was looking at 1.6 diesel before but now I'm worried 'cause of ULEZ etc so I was thinking a 1.4 petrol? But I'm also broke, is the 1.2 ok?

7:55 lol I own a VW Golf 7 for more than half a year and I did not know I could store it down there xD

Game changer
What about the Focus back seats ambient light? it's just so unstable when you press it that it seems its gonna fall at any moment, besides the focus rears doors panels are suspiciously soft, if you press them with your fingers they move way too much, is this normal? I went one day to see the car and got really disapointed because of the poor quality in the rear seats.
Ah you guys are lucky you still have the Focus. I was thinking of buying one but here in North America they have been discontinued since 2018 :S
Kia has a 7 year warranty vs a 2 year from vw and 1 year from ford. That's the most important thing for me.
I think the new astra deserves to be there. Astra's used to be a joke but now they're quite good.
That's true

Those 3 Feel classic outside :/ the focus is gorgeous only in vignale or st-line with some option.
If i have to choose one i take the focus !
I ordered Focus St-Line :-)
Ford Focus is the best of its category..great video
No comments regarding the assistance systems? The lane follow assist in the Ceed works better than the lane center assist in the Focus. It follows the car in front of you rather than just the lines that on many roads are difficult to spot for the Focus.
Good old times when this was a duel between the Golf and the Opel Kadett (then Astra).
I love how my 2010 GTI has basically the same exact interior of a 2019 Golf/GTI. Goes to show how nice it was in the first place that they've kept it the same for 10 model years. The car as a whole hasn't changed much either since 2010 besides a move to the MQB platform. VW has a formula that works. Some may call that boring but I think it's great.
Honestly, what you're saying is borderline delusional.
VW are cheap enough to keep the same interior yet you somehow see that as a plus, when there are so many things which could be improved (like the navigation system being too far down from the driver's view)? I don't understand how you can try to mask these shortcomings as successes, when facelifts primarily boast interior enhancements over anything else.
You've got a pretty biased way of looking at things.
S dont forget their dsg goes boom regularly.
And the 1.4 used to drink oil faster than you could pour it in.
Yeah theyre freaking wonderful vw.
I would choose golf

How I found out about this was the golfs reg number is different, one is a 17 plate car and the other one is a 18 plate and also in the interior one is automatic and the other car is manual
Ford really has made a beautiful machine with the new Focus, I’m not just saying this because I’m a Ford man myself, nobody can deny that they’ve done a superb job, sure there’s one or two niggles here and there but it’s like that with any car, overall it’s arguably the best and the only car I’d personally choose.
If I had to choose something else my next choice isn’t even on this list, the Honda Civic would be my option 2.
In my opinion the Golf is looking very dated (subjective opinion) I see them everywhere and they all look the same, the design in general on most of their cars is very clinical and underwhelming, some people like the more grown up conservative look but I personally just think it’s getting a little long in the tooth, VW needs to spice things up a bit.
I’ve also driven a lot of various VW’s such as the golf and polo and they’re all a bit underwhelming to drive, they drive well but they are far from exciting, they’re just a bit bland for my taste.
As of right now I wouldn’t give the Golf a second look, it’s just not for me.
The Kia maybe, but it’s a fat nope for the Golf for me.
In the Golf's defense, it looks much better in the upper trims with the fancy lights.
But I agree, Ford seems to have made a really good car.
It looks ugly, I have a ford fiesta and they've completely messed the new models up
Yeah you see I like the Golfs style..
admittedly wasn’t a fan when the MK7 came out but I’ve warmed to it. Can’t deny though Ford have stepped up there game. Let’s see what the new Golf brings next year..
I think ford focus won the race share. Don't forget that the golf 7 is in the market for over 7 years, I'm pretty sure that golf 8 would easily take the crown back .
This is the MK7.5 Golf released in 2016.
Just a Senna flying by normal Sunday for you Matt😍
ARGHHHHH BEST COMP SO FAR!!!!
Even though I like my VW, the 3-cyl 1.0L just isn't the sweet spot for small car; I'd prefer a 4-cyl 1.5L just right for urban & extra-urban driving. Waiting for the Mk8 1.5 TSI should be a great car
does she still pull at mid speeds? How confident would you be overtaking?
StX3 Yes good strong mid range due to turbocharger assist is a good selling point of these cars vs the competition. Good overtaking happens seconds before, planning the lane change, accelerate into it, whilst the vehicle in front covers the wind resistance. When you're drawing alongside or in front, you should have considerable momentum and ease back in, no problem
Joe Bloggs got my 18 plate golf se nav couple days ago 1.0, she definitely goes love the drive, def loses a bit going up but compared to my old 1l 3cyl c1 its night and day
The Ford was engineered and is build in Germany, like, obviously, the Golf. Most of the Kia was designed and engineered in Germany, too. If you fairly consider what you get for your money, all three cars to me are too close to praise a single winner. All three cars are really, really good, and to me are better than the competition.
Thomas Schmitz i would take the focus gold got boring especially if u life in Germany
Is it two different golf? The gauges seem to be standard on the panning shots but when he's sat speaking about them it seems to change to the digital? 2:45
We had a 1.0 Ecoboost Focus ST-Line for just over a month as a courtesy car when our Mondeo was written off earlier this year. Engine is peppy enough around town allowing you to dart in and out easily enough but becomes quite noisy and stretched when overtaking on the Motorway. Suspension on the ST-Line is quite hard too but my Fiancee fell in love with it so much she wants to get the 1.5 Ecoboost version later this year.
So this doesn’t make any sense. In your in-depth review of the Ford focus you say the car has hard plastics at the back? Yet you say in this review that the Focus is the only one to have soft touch plastics at the back even though the Ceed also have.
You can see this comparison video was rushed. It's not fair in many cases. These budget cars have a huge difference in terms of quality and materials as you move up the trim levels. A well equipped golf is 30 grand for example.
I find it a bit annoying that reviewers never mention this. The Golf for example is recognized for its decent interior quality but the base Golf is actually quite fucking cheap inside.
Same goes for the others as well.
No word about the reliability of these cars, I think it is here where the podium looks the other way around.
i have the new mk7.5 golf (normal one).

Well..., the best car in this class will always be the VW Golf! It's no wonder that this class of cars in Germany is named "Golf Klasse". It was and it will always be about the VW Golf and how these cars are made, what competitors are looking for. Ford Focus and others just can't keep up with the feeling, you get in every new VW Golf. VW suspensions are so much better than in Ford or Korean brands compact cars.
SJW Maniac everyone has different opinions
SJW Maniac The golf is a solid car but it’s just a car. Nothing interesting about it. The Focus and Kia are much more exciting to drive
@@mills3375 You didn't listen at all to the video: the Kia is the least exciting to drive..., sorry man! Just shut up, because even a VW Golf at the end of its life cycle is the much better car than a new Kia. This is the lesson!
Millen Rogers It’s not that solid, mine is only 2 years old and there is rattled and squeaks near the boot
So... what c segment car is comfortable for three back passengers?
Only thing I don't like about the Focus is the position of the front number plate over the grille
What's a shame about this, is calling Ford 'American'.
The Focus is a European Development and pretty much as German as the Golf (with a british influence - best of both worlds?)).
Made in Germany too!
I believe Ford would be more appreciated if people focused on their European Heritage. After all the Ford Germany has been founded in 1925, Volkswagen has only been founded in 1937 / 1949.
My wild guess would be that the only 'american' thing about the Focus is its Badge.
raph84 The way of the world these days! And that’s quite true..
mad to think though isn’t it that Ford were once offered the Volkswagen company for free but they declined because they said the company was ‘worthless’ but look at them now! a massive international group with 12 brands.
Kudos to Ford on this one though they’ve stepped up the game and the Focus is a good car. Let’s see what the new Golf has to bring next year!
Overall quite a good review, just two comments:
I don’t care about scratchy plastics - I don’t normally touch the areas that you complain about the scratchy plastics being in ( normally they are in the lower half of the car - the reason being is that they are more susceptible to knocks and bumps and are therefore more hard wearing.)
I don’t care about the parcel shelf fitting under the boot floor. If I need to carry loads of stuff it’s all just gonna get shoved in the back and the parcel shelf will fit where there is space
Comparison between small estate cars? Kia ceed tourer , vauxhall astra touring or corolla tourer?
I would like to see a head to head between the civic hatch, Corolla hatch, ceed and Elantra gt
Only until the 2020 Golf comes out.the Mk VII Golf is fundamentally a 2012 car and it's still the second best car in the class. The Mk VIII will smoke everything.
But it still does look like a box on wheels
The experience of driving a VW Golf can be compared, but it always wins over its competitors.
Why is there different footage from the Golfs interior used between minute 2 and 3? Its kind of confusing
I'm not a huge fan of the iPad looking touch screens in the Kia or Ford. It looks like an after thought. I just recently bought a Golf and Volkswagen were smart putting the screen in the area where the Stereo should be and I find that I can use it.
