This test was between the A class and the a3 in my opinion. And for the money i will go with the Mercedes all day long. That interior is superior. The only thing thats down on the A class is the bulky seats. Is not a race car. Those headrests take so much of the view for the rear passenger and when you reverse. Good review Matt as always.
Finally some old nice comparison test. Well done Matt i thought you already forgot about comparison tests. More of this kind of tests please, like in old days! It's more fun than drag test whatsoever.
Having just been in a 1 series for the first time this week, I know which interior I'd rather live with. The Benz is flashy, but the BMW is built like a bank vault
Nathan Manning how could the old one look bad. There was literally nothing wrong with the looks of the old one. It looked sporty without looking like a hot wheels car like the a45 or the civic type R. It’s only issue was the lack of interior space
I think mazda 3 is a better choice if you are looking for an awesome interior quality and, in fact, the most Premium feeling, that its the most important key that should have the german premium brands, BMW, MB and Audi.
Hi Mat. It would be good if in these group tests you could cover a little more about NVH. Cabin noise is something that's really important to me when buying a car. It doesn't really get much of a mention in your reviews. Thanks!
1- those cars with the black roof liner look horribly dark. Not sure why people would want that. 2- A good reason to get an A3 was always that it was more practical then a BMW or Mercedes...now it is not. 3- When you get the A3 in the sport trim you get a very sporty.....folding centre seat? And they say that the Germans don't have a sense of humour!
I first really disliked the exterior of the Golf. But I have sort of warmed up to it. The front is still pretty dodgy from certain angels, but it looks better in person (and is HEAVILY wheels dependent). In general I think for the price that I pay on my lease it is by far the best overall package. Even compared to other cars like the CEED and Megane. Maybe the car you had Mat, didn't have the adaptive suspension? I think not, looking at the blank on the dashboard. I have a Golf with that setup and in Sport Mode it has insane levels of grip, it stays really flat and actually steers pretty sharply. I haven't had understeer even once in this car. Went to the Spanish Pyrenean and I could take corners way quicker than I ever could in my 2019 Corolla from last year.
I must coment! You are right man, Golf doesnt have adaptive suspension. Im watched every single video review of Golf. And every single one is impressed with suspension setup when ist equiped with adaptive one, even mat when is tested it for first time it was impressed. So just to resume, u cant get better in hatch segment than you can in Golf. It was and it is and would be forever be king of segment. The look, the technology, all in one package, and then you have little smaler price. So my pickup is Golf all the time. Once again it would kick ass every opponet in this segment. And if you consider GTD, GTI, R, then every single of this look boring compared to Golf. GTD king of diesel hot hatches, GTI and R kiling it with look, and completly setup. S3 is aways step down compared to R. A3 generaly is not good as in previous generation. Golf kick his ass in this one really!
@@jjjjj77772 much better! The suspension, the engines(exept 45s amg), the gearbox. And for my taste it looks better.(ber in mind in this test A class is in amg pack the Golf is in style wich is pack down, you have R line and then trim gtd, gti. Wich doesent have competitors). Me as a fan of diesel engines, i never ever would take A class with the mpsy powerfull engine (195hp) compared to the most powerfull in golf(GTD 200HP) Its another level believe me. So for my taste Golf nailed it! Cheers And one very important thing. A class is renault in power under 190 hp ;) engines, gearbox, etc
@@sunnohh for my taste its perfect, me as fan pf Golf i want this, every one is similar, this one is different and i love it. It will look fresh even after 10-15 years. You as hater you must see car in person and then give opinion. In person it looks so much modern and different.
I have the new 1 series, had the old one before. Both have the standard suspension and the new one is noticeably better. More comfort, more sportiness. The new one is quieter, more efficient although it has the same engine. But the steering was way better in the old one. I can't seem to shake this weird throttle impact when going out of a corner although I thought the "new" DSC system ported from the i3 would help with that. Overall a great daily and I got it even cheaper than the old one, wouldn't wanna change for the Golf, A3 or A Class. Personally I like the BMW's design the most.
I also agree with u, the old one used to have that sensation of a light car when u pressed the acceletaror and the brake, but of course ,at the same time good horsepower. The proof that some Cars like the new Golf can be faster that the serie 1 ,using the same engines is because its heavier, as Matt saif the new serie 1 feels heavy when u drive it.
I've got a 2017 118i msport rwd absolutely love it .just before that horrendous facelift on the new models and why take it from rwd to fwd killed it imo
Very good and natural delivery from the presenter. Thanks so much for this informative video. Audi A3 all the way for me, though the others are great cars too.
I’d still pick an M140i over any of these 😂 New A class has insane luxury for an entry level merc, but no hatchback will be as good to drive than an M140i. The new 1 series however 🤮
Xx_ANGRYCAT_xX it is luxury. The MBUX system is so much better than previous gen, and stuff like adaptive cruise control, heads up display, adaptive brake & headlights etc. It has definitely raised the level for technology in hatchbacks.
Finally a review that everyone hear will like because the cars relate to 99% of the people. But firstly well done to all four for producing such good cars. All four will do well for their owners and as Matt said it’ll be down on looks and people’s practically. The golf will sell more, it’s looks are weird but it does everything else really well. The bmw has stepped its game up and defo as a drivers car it’s a good choice. The a class though is a winner as it does tick a lot of boxes. A3 looses as it doesn’t offer much more than a golf but still a very good option. But you can’t say a person is wrong for choosing either car. I would be happy with either but if it was my money I would probs choose a golf.
Matt, you are by far the best car reviewer on UA-cam today. I got a great deal on a 1 series and your excellent advice definitely helped me make the right choice! Thx dude! 😎

@@kaispeierer1441 More like Porsche couldn't even start competing with cars in this class, as they have none. However, it also doesn't matter too much as Porsche, VW and Audi are all in the same (very big) boat, kinda.

Porsche simply plays in another league, mate.
@Maverick so that's an interesting one as well. I do feel however that the CLA is more of a 'coupe' as the 2 GC is supposed to be. The A-class limousine and A3 Limousine are more aligned as a 'sedan', BMW doesn't have anything in that class as such.
@@Shockload they could very well be doing that in your market. Cars get advertised differently based on the market, and here in the Netherlands they both are called limousine.
Such a shame that the Audi is almost the same quality as the golf... front door metal is visible in the golf Audi and Mercedes. Only bmw feels really premium in the inside. I like the Audi digital screen, and the Mercedes vents. But overall I feel the bmw more premium. And I have driven for test the bmw Audi and Mercedes
@Hey it's a matter of taste, to me the best looking of the 4 is the Audi, and that car lacks personality. New Mazdas are not like the old one, the quality has improved a lot. And i don't want a car for its badge, but for what it offers
I am missing a more everyday experience of the cars, think Mat should have driven them longer time. In order to save a little money Golf and too many other cars have saved away the really nice push and rotary buttons to change temperature and fan speed. In most older cars you still have these buttons and it much easier and safer to operate: even in my old Swift I can keep my eyes on the road and operate the climate inside without looking on a screen. I can see Audi and Mercedes has kept a separate section just for this: good. Driving in the dark Golf hasn't even lit up the temperature sliders: really bad!

I thought it was more A-Class vs. BMW 1 Series. I think the Audi is not really up there, its not the best in any category.
BMW and VW designers have lost the plot
What’s wrong with the new BMW Focus Series?
I’ve actually seen the car in real life and it doesn’t look bad they shall have just kept the old shape and old grill

Having just been in a 1 series for the first time this week, I know which interior I'd rather live with. The Benz is flashy, but the BMW is built like a bank vault
I’ve got one mate, been in a merc which I believe is 2nd behind the bmw. Defiantly look better at night tho the BMW

Lol would have shown their rears on a runway with no Mat in sight
Is it just me or did the current lineup of hatchback just got uglier overnight in one generation? Man I already miss the F21 M140i (LCI).
I agree with the BMW. It's just ugly at the front. The older version looks much better
They also ruined the fast one. There is no I6 roar or rwd fun anymore
The bmw got really bad! It even is fwd
Tobias G. I always thought the bmw 1 series looked hideous. This one looks even better than the previous ones if you ask me, despite the grill.
*When you’re not first, not last, but you tapped really fast.* .
A drag race of these please 🥺
@@trader2473 You think it's better than the A-class for the same price?
@@jjjjj77772 much better! The suspension, the engines(exept 45s amg), the gearbox. And for my taste it looks better.(ber in mind in this test A class is in amg pack the Golf is in style wich is pack down, you have R line and then trim gtd, gti. Wich doesent have competitors). Me as a fan of diesel engines, i never ever would take A class with the mpsy powerfull engine (195hp) compared to the most powerfull in golf(GTD 200HP) Its another level believe me. So for my taste Golf nailed it! Cheers
And one very important thing. A class is renault in power under 190 hp ;) engines, gearbox, etc

Carwow, yes the A Class can do full screen mapping exactly like the Audi, you just need to know where to find it...
That depends from the software version of the MBUX. My A Class has full screen map, but my friend’s one doesn’t.
No. The first A-class have the full screen navigation but not from MY19. So the early A-class from 2018 got it but not the new ones.

I’d still pick an M140i over any of these 😂 New A class has insane luxury for an entry level merc, but no hatchback will be as good to drive than an M140i. The new 1 series however 🤮
Its not luxury its just normal technology as the other ones they have just put two screens so it looks more modern
Xx_ANGRYCAT_xX it is luxury. The MBUX system is so much better than previous gen, and stuff like adaptive cruise control, heads up display, adaptive brake & headlights etc. It has definitely raised the level for technology in hatchbacks.

Xx_ANGRYCAT_xX yeah because they’re 2020 models. The A class came out in 2019, and I’m not a Mercedes fan but they raised the game for hatchback tech
Are you gonna ignore the fact that BMW turned the 1 Series into a Ford Focus?
Matt, you are by far the best car reviewer on UA-cam today. I got a great deal on a 1 series and your excellent advice definitely helped me make the right choice! Thx dude! 😎

This is the one I've been waiting for! I'd also be interested in the 2 series GC, A-class limousine and A3 limousine
Why TF r u calling them limousine
@Maverick so that's an interesting one as well. I do feel however that the CLA is more of a 'coupe' as the 2 GC is supposed to be. The A-class limousine and A3 Limousine are more aligned as a 'sedan', BMW doesn't have anything in that class as such.
@@Shockload because both Audi and Mercedes advertise them as such?
@@organi10 no they didn't they only advertise their S class and A8 as limousine but the A3 is just a Sub-Compact Sedan

@Hey not a Kia or an Opel, but a Volvo yes, great cars
I think the new Mazda 3 should've been on the review too!
Yes but its not premium enough
@@hiiiofficial8306 Even A3 has scratchy plastics on the rear door top but Mazda 3 doesn’t. How about that?
I am missing a more everyday experience of the cars, think Mat should have driven them longer time. In order to save a little money Golf and too many other cars have saved away the really nice push and rotary buttons to change temperature and fan speed.
In most older cars you still have these buttons and it much easier and safer to operate: even in my old Swift I can keep my eyes on the road and operate the climate inside without looking on a screen.
I can see Audi and Mercedes has kept a separate section just for this: good.
Driving in the dark Golf hasn't even lit up the temperature sliders: really bad!
When I started watching carwow in 2016 I used to think what an idiot this guy is doesn't know to review cars.

I’ll admit, I laughed when he made the rear console go “ahhh” in the A Class😂😂😂
