Thank you Dr. Ekberg. Very vert informative. Clearer than what our Nephrologist provides. Continue to be a blessing to humanity. An avid follower here!
Hello, Dr. Ekberg. I am so happy you talked about this because I am a CKD 3A patient and am confused about my diet. In my February bloodwork I moved up to Stage 2 (eGFR 68.5/Crea 0.69) which was awesome, but last May my eGFR went down again to Stage 3A (eGFR 56.7/Crea 0.82). I was devastated. I figured it was my diet. I had mostly vegetables 6 months ago but then I ate meat again and did some fasting. I think protein and intermittent fasting are bad for me. However, my doctor told me that I don't have to worry about my food intake but recommended that I have a balanced meal. He didn't recommend fasting at all. No renal diet for me, he reckoned. Watching this video made me more relaxed. Thank you very much, Doc. You explained better than any doctor I met. God bless you.
I always believe in combining two or more vegetables to balance out the nutrients. I would not eat spinach everyday. S/times I mix spinach with kale. I have blueberries with bananas. I eat nuts with dried fruit spricots or raisins.. Approx. six out of 10 times my meals contain onion, garlic and ginger. I add ginger or peppermimt to regular tea. Hope this helps someone. Senior.🙏☘️🥳

@@GTSN38 my friend says this too. HOWEVER, I am a nerd, I want the data! These videos are what I am watching when I am watching "TV". I never want to let myself fall back in the trap and I want to arm myself with knowledge when I am trying to save someones eyes, feet, life. I've been getting pretty good effect from saying things like " that leg is purple, that foot will be coming off soon". Or " you've cut out fat and gotten fatter, do you think maybe sugar could be bad?" Dr Ekberg is just my quiet retreat from this insane world where I can focus on what matters and regroup my thoughts properly.
The best thing that you can do to improve kidney function is intermittent fasting for at least 3 months and cut way down on carbs. This is also the cure for diabetes 2 which is the number 1 cause of kidney failure.
Had a 15 percent boost in gfr after drinking alkaline artesian spring water two months before my blood test. Been at 39 percent for over a year now, C Force water was the brand. Low was 29 then went to 44 percent, stabilzing at around 39 percent.
I recently recovered from a UTI and found that consuming a significant amount of dried cranberries was incredibly effective. However, I agree with your observation that the sugar content in them is comparable to that of soda, which isn't an advisable choice. Although I have allergies that prevent me from consuming artificial sweeteners, I am willing to give your suggestion of non-sweetened cranberry concentrate mixed with water a try. Thank you, Dr. Ekberg! Your knowledge and expertise are truly amazing, and I am constantly learning so much from you.
Monk fruit is low glycemic. No aftertaste like stevia and agave. Some people find the taste fruity. It comes from Asia and has a role in Chinese medicine The price has come done and you don’t need a lot to sweeten drinks.
@ 27:15 Go to the organic section and buy the unsweetened cranberry juice in the glass bottle (don't remember the brand name). It's hard to drink but at least it doesn't have loads of sugar negating the benefits of the cranberries.
I went whole food plant based no sugar no oil no salt (WFPB-SOS) after smelling beef in my urine at stage 3a CKD. Saturated fat increases insulin resistance and causes kidney damage as sell. So I would recommend keeping portions small, 4 ounces or less. Some kidney professional recommend saturated fat be kept to 5% of calories or less.
All my blood tests say me eGFR is around 66 to 69... I have had several over the last couple of years. My doctor has taken urine samples and given me ultrasounds to check my kidneys and every time they say they are fine. They have told me that I just naturally have a low eGFR and there is nothing to worry about. I am worried though. The blood tests began because I keep having gout attacks even though I don't drink alochol, I don't eat seafood and I eat very little red meat.

Hi Dr. Ekberg. Thanks so much for this video. My eGFR varies between 40 and 60 and has done for over 10 years. I tell my doctor that is because I take creatine monohydrate as a supplement for weightlifting. Lifting weights and creatine both raise creatinine but my doctor doesn’t want to hear it. My eldest son (48) was told he also had CKD. He visited a kidney specialist (nephrologist) and after many tests the specialist informed him that the eGFR test wasn’t suitable for everyone and that he didn’t have CKD. Now to my question. I take methylene blue (40mg) per day. Do you think this could help or harm my kidneys? Thankyou.
Could you please discuss our food that is sooo high in oxalates that deplete and steal the nutrients in our body? Like not eating Spinach. This affects our kidneys so bad that leads to painful kidney and bladder stones. How do we balance this intake to get rid of pains and kidney failure? I checked with the kidney specialist because i’m getting sick. Taking spinach smoothies for 3 months and ending in ER with kidney failure. Caused by toxic high oxalates in diet. Thank you. No more high oxalates like spinach, no chard, no nuts etc!
I ferment cauliflower, along with many other fermented vegetables. I think they are good for you. The fermented cauliflower is crunchy after a 6 day ferment. Dr Ekberg, do you have any advice on fermented vegetables please, as probiotics especially. Thankyou.
I am 24 years old. I learned a few weeks ago that my eGFR has been between 60 and 70 for a year. I missed the best opportunity for treatment. It remains at 70 today. My kidneys still have 50% function. I may receive hemodialysis before I am 30 years old. I even want to end my life early because I don’t want to be tortured by the disease. Kidney disease is an incurable disease. If your kidneys are good, please continue to stay healthy and don’t leave any regrets in life.

I love Dr. Ekberg's videos, I've listened to almost all of them all the way through at work and at home. Starting to reccomend this channel to my friends and family, since over the last 3 months or so I've lost a significant amount of weight, put on muscle (from all the eggs I eat now), and my original goal to begin with was honestly just fixing my health problems after years of excessive alchohol consumption. People have seen the changes on me, and I hope that's enough to get them hooked, as well. I just wish there was a channel like this, but for our beloved pets... I have a cat that I want to feed right, too, but she wont eat eggs. 😅 (For context: I am 27, female, 3+ months off the booze and on the Heath Champion lifestyle. I've lost around 30 lbs. My health is overall a lot better, but my liver is still kind of sensitive due to the slow process of healing, and the tap water at my new apartment is horrifically full of chemicals. Just bought a water filter, as a start to fixing that problem.)
@dirtclodboi For me, it just feels like some inflammation. It's not painful, but enough to notice that something isn't right. It used to be worse after a night of binge drinking. Now, it's just mild occasionally if I've had too much coffee or something. It would also flare up before I finally cut out energy drinks, too. Most people who also struggle with alchohol are also familiar with the feeling. It's a pretty subtle but clear sign that it's time to make a change. Additionally, if it's painful, then you might definitely need to see a doctor.
My lab references show Greater than 60 as good…. Now I see that at 74 I am actually stage 2 CKD…. Thanks Dr Ekberg for educating me of this. I am now motivated to work at getting this number in the dark green zone ….
I'm confused. 10 super foods to help the Kidney, but he covered 25 things and had issues with most of them. I didn't really hear anything that stands out as a super kidney food. Also, my creatinine was said to be 1.5ish.......does that mean I'm between 1-2 in this scale? Or is creatinine different than this 1-5 scale?
Glad I found these videos. I have been leaning towards much of these principals without much guidance. This has definitely helped me define and hone my plan.

The best thing that you can do for kidney function/failure is to do intermittent fasting for at least 3 months and cut way down on carb consumption. This is also the cure for diabetes 2 which is the main cause of kidney failure.
Good advice, giving the whole picture. One thing though: Berries are fairly high in oxalates, especially raspberries. Most berries are restricted or eliminated from a diet treating kidney damage.

I was on dialysis for 8 months because my kidneys went into shock after an allogenic bone marrow transplant to cure AML leukemia and I got GVHD. My perfectly healthy kidneys totally quit working one day and went back to working one night eight months later. There's only 2 positive things about total kidney failure, you never wake up to urinate because you don't anymore and after finishing a session at the dialysis clinic a greasy cheeseburger and soft drink never tasted better. I think that was because for the first time in 40 years I had clean blood. You don't want kidney failure. I know from experience. I'll never complain again about waking up to urinate again. I say a prayer for all kidney patients. It's not an easy lifestyle.

Don't know the stage, but my kidneys have problems that are static. They test it yearly with a special testing procedure. Lots of meds, hyperthyroidism, overweight. Exercise or diet don't help against IR at 62 yrs of age. Any suggestion would be welcome.
I have a question. I was born with one kidney not functioning- a birth defect. It will never function, although it was not 'removed' when I was three years old. I have been living with only one kidney (perfectly healthy) for 67 years. Do I have kidney disease or just a birth defect?

The problem is most nephrologists are like most establishment doctors who are ignorant about nutrition and metabolic health. From my experience they steer you away from a low carb diet and more towards a plant based low fat diet.
Thank you for the great breakdown on what can help repair kidney function, and by the way Food to Live has powdered Cranberries organic and no added sugar. It is a smooth powder that dissolves well compared to other brands I have tried and is more shelf stable that the bottled variety.

Thanks very much. I went plant based and low carb a few months ago but still eat fish. I listen to my body. Amazing how God made it. It let's you know what you can eat and what not especially when going through health situation. So I listen to my body and pray for healing and health. Already healed.
Amen

Senior.🙏☘️🥳
Spinach can lead to kidney stones (oxalate). I have had them 3 times. Blueberries are great but you might want to avoid bananas (high potassium)
Do you have kidney disease? I was diagnosed recently? Creat 1.41 gfr 53... I don't see my doctor again til Oct 31 he has told me nothing, but It sounds like have late stage 2 or early stage 3

The best thing that you can do to improve kidney function is intermittent fasting for at least 3 months and cut way down on carbs. This is also the cure for diabetes 2 which is the number 1 cause of kidney failure.
If you high sugars, intermittent fast a minimum of 12 hrs a day, avoid soda, processed foods and toast
@@ceciliaabdalla4954 14 to 16 hours is about when the fasting really starts. Currently I’m on a 20 hour fast right now.

I went whole food plant based no sugar no oil no salt (WFPB-SOS) after smelling beef in my urine at stage 3a CKD. Saturated fat increases insulin resistance and causes kidney damage as sell. Hi Dr. Thankyou.

(For context: I am 27, female, 3+ months off the booze and on the Heath Champion lifestyle. I've lost around 30 lbs. My health is overall a lot better, but my liver is still kind of sensitive due to the slow process of healing, and the tap water at my new apartment is horrifically full of chemicals. Just bought a water filter, as a start to fixing that problem.)
What does that liver sensitivity feel like?
@dirtclodboi For me, it just feels like some inflammation. It's not painful, but enough to notice that something isn't right. It used to be worse after a night of binge drinking. Now, it's just mild occasionally if I've had too much coffee or something. It would also flare up before I finally cut out energy drinks, too. Most people who also struggle with alchohol are also familiar with the feeling. It's a pretty subtle but clear sign that it's time to make a change.
Additionally, if it's painful, then you might definitely need to see a doctor.
Congratulations on your recovery! Both from alcohol dependence, but in addressing other areas of your health. Keep going! ❤
