Anna where were you ten years ago when I taught myself with an American book and I am dyslexic.
I do like your way of not being so precise. Now that I have lost track of the amount of socks I have knitted and see the construction of the sock on dpns, it is really very basic.
I always do my toes the way you do because Kitchener stitch and my brain doesn't work.
You are a gifted knitting teacher and although I have been knitting for 68 years knitting socks is now my favourite, specially when the stripes match.
    Thank you x

Hello Anna. I just came across your channel. I really liked what you are saying here. I have been experimenting for the last year with different yarns and patterns. I have decided I would rather use the heavier yarns like Patons Kroy for my socks and I have found that toe up are more fitted to my foot. I did find a couple of patterns that are using the slip stitch heel and I love the way it is fitting. I am glad you talked about the Opal yarn. I have been curious about it. I live in Colorado, USA so it is good to know where I can get it. I have one of my LYS that carries West Yorkshire Spinners yarn, so I bought one to try. I am going to look at some of your past episodes. Thank you for doing this.

Thank you Anna for your very informative video. I am new to sock knitting and found your explanation about wrap & turn heel vs heel flap & gusset along with your toe preference very helpful.

The length of the leg (or shaft) will probably depend on your individual calf muscle; I am quite short and the distance between my heel and the beginning of the calf muscle is also short, and I have a very muscular calf with a large diameter (I struggle to buy boots!), so if I make a long shaft, it concertinas down below the muscle and looks sloppy, so I keep that part quite short or reduce it in a patterned sock for myself. Or I make a longer 2x2 rib and turn it over as a cuff.
It's good to find a sock yarn you rely on. I actually find WYS sock yarn lovely and plump, but I usually knit on 2.25mm. I find the (Swiss) Sommer sock yarn sold in my local grocery store in Switzerland to be one of the most hard-wearing sock yarns I've ever had and I throw mine in the washing machine AND tumble dryer! There are also a few brands (incl. Sommer) that have extra thread to reinforce heels and toes, which used to be standard. Otherwise, I also like the Buttinette yarns that are good value for money (I think they are the same as Hobbii).
To me, Opal yarns haven't really struck me as any different or thicker or more hard-wearing, so I was interested that you think so!

Hi Anna! I only find in our stores the Paton Kroy yarn for socks which although quite expensive, is the best we have. I can however order online and I will search for the Opal brand. Thank you for the video update on your preferences! I always knit heel flap and gusset cuff downs. I like your toe finish! I should try it! I remember in my youth doing it this way. Your socks are pretty…

I think its good to try different heels and toes, then customise the sock pattern (recipe) to suit your own feet. I am curranty trying some no-heel socks just out of curiosity.
