    TAAT tip: You can cast on both socks for cuff down onto your needles without all of the fussiness of extra needles. You basically just cast on half of the stitches for the first sock then push them down the needle. Cast on on all of the stitches for your second sock and slide those down. Bring your needles together, slide the half cast on first sock all the way to the needles(they should be on the left needle) and finishing casting on the first sock by putting the remaining stitches on the empty needle(it should be the right needle). You will need to divide the stitches of the second sock in half over the bend in the cable, and then get going in the round.
    I don't know if this makes sense, but I'm sure there is a tutorial out there for this somewhere and it's super easy and way less fussy. :)
    Edited to add TAAT for life! My SSS is extreme and thank goodness this method exist lol.

    Hi! I really appreciate your video. Just fyi, it’s really possible to cast on both socks on the same circular needle. Basically you cast on the first half of stitches of the first sock, then all the stitches of the second sock and finally the second part of the first sock. Hard to explain but easy to do!! 😂

    There is one more way to do TAAT which is how I do it now. First I want to say I feel responsible for this video after declaring my astonishment at your ufo socks. LOL! I agree you should definitely do TAAT. I have made TAAT on two circs and also magic loop with a single circ… but I so love my dpns and feel like I am eating cake without icing when I don’t get to use my beloved dpns, so I do TAAT tandem on dpns. Two identical sets of dpns, yarn into two cakes, cast on, cast on, 20 rows rib, 20 rows rib, 10 leg, 10 leg etc… You get the gist. I love it. It goes surprisingly fast and they get finished at the same time. Sometimes I leave one sock upstairs and one downstairs. If I am upstairs I will grab one and do a few rounds, and then when I go downstairs I work on the other. Sometimes one sock gains on the other (usually the leg of the sock knit in front of a good movie) but leapfrog doesn’t have to be equal. This is my perfect TAAT. No cords, no yarns tangling together (each is in it’s own ziplock bag), I get to use my dpns and both socks get finished the same day. ❤

The thing is the only time I get to use my dpn’s is small circumference knitting and I was loathe to forgo them every time I did taat on ML. This way I get the best of both worlds and the socks really do get finished. I don’t allow myself to do the toe on one until the foot on the other is done too. Something about it… ❤️

      I've attempted it just for proof of concept, but you can also knit 2 at a time simultaneously on a single set of needles by essentially stranded knitting with two yarns and just always keeping the strands in their position. You could also look at it like double knitting. I'm sure someone made a video. I found it overwhelming when I tried it many years ago and haven't gotten around to trying it again.

    All my socks are knit 2 at at time! Yes I find it more fussy at times and see people working on one sock and I think "wow that looks relaxing", BUT....I agree with the motivation of knowing they will be done at the same time is a huge bonus. Although, for me (and my personal brand of neurosis)... knowing they will be worked IDENTICALLY and that any changes I made were very easy to make on both socks at the same time, and not forgotten if I didn't write it down, is the absolute answer for me.
    Cheers!

    I’m knitting TAAT right now but on 2 needles. I’m doing magic loop for each sock and just knitting a stripe one one, then a stripe on the other, going back and forth that way until I finish both socks. There’s multiple ways to do TAAT! You can also use two 16 or 24” needles instead of one 40”. 😊❤❤❤

    I’ve only tried magic loop once and loathed it. But that may be to do with cuff down, which I also don’t love! But I love knitting TAAT to avoid second sock syndrome (I just use two sets of DPNs/short circs, or a mix of 😂) and like pushing myself to keep trying things I don’t like.

    Thanks for inspiring me to move to one needle for TAAT Magic Loop. I just finished my first pair of Magic Loop socks. I did quasi-TAAT using two separate needles. Now, I cast on TAAT Magic Loop socks on one needle. You said it is fiddly at first and I a bit underestimated that. It was not just the casting on separately but hard to manage when the socks are small and there are still tails around, etc. But now I'm a few rows past the toes and I can see this will be well worth it! Thank you!

    I imagined that you could never get me to give up my dpn's and I have a small fortune in them. I learned to lever knit which works best for me, but when I am on dpns, I am stopping to move from one needle to the other and often having to re-tension the yarn in my hand. So, I reluctantly tried this. I think that like many, I have a love/hate relationship with magic loop. I tried two circ's and that seemed harder to handle for two at a time socks. Yes, it was a tad fiddly and I did do my cuffs on separate needles and then attached them, but I'm whizzing along on the magic loop. You have great energy and you talk about things in such depth that I thought that if she likes it, then I might like it, too. As for dpns, there's also the time when you're knitting in bed and one has to tear apart the whole bed to find that one needle that got away. As for the flexi dpns, I don't know if you did anything on them, but for me they are an absolute nightmare. You have just converted me to this method and I'm happy as a clam if you think of a clam as constantly smiling.

    I do TAAT socks on two long cables, so the instep and heel/sole are on separate needles. And I make sure the cables are different colors. My current setup is a set of Chiagoo and Addis, size 1 with 40 inch cables. My current favorite sock is a toe-up sock with a German short row heel.
    I also mark the front of each sock with distinct stitch marker so I can identify sock #1, with which I always begin and end a knitting session. Helps me keep track of everything.

    This was so timely! I was really thinking about learning this method just so I could stop measuring my legs and cuffs. But honestly that seems way easier than worrying about casting on two at a time. I also am not a fan of magic loop and prefer 9in circulars and actually knit second socks faster than my first since I get a little rush with finishing an item. But I think it would be a great idea for something that’s maybe a process, gift, or even a challenging knit when consistency is your goal. Thanks again for some great points and a great video!

    My knitting goal for 2023 was to master socks. I know I have sss, so I wanted to be able to knit 2aat. But my initial efforts were so poor, I realized I had to adopt “first for learning, second for practice.” Every sock was littered with lifelines, and there were stickies everywhere with counts and pattern notes. I’ve successfully knit 3 pair of socks, one by one, but was getting neurotic with all those attempts to make exactly matching socks. I decided to finally attempt 2aat. I was doing fine until I got to the short-row heel shaping. I realized I had to do one at a time. But I left them on the magic loop, completed the first and went to the second, and damn if it didn’t work out. They matched! And no notes or counts! I even managed to do it without lifelines. I doubt I will ever go back to “learning/practice” single socks.

    I like TAAT but I'm not a total convert, if that makes sense. Getting the yarn spit in two and all ready for TAAT is an extra step that I don't find myself doing UNLESS: 1) it's sleeves. Sleeves are so much more important to have identical than socks imo (not just because they're more hidden but I have broken my right ankle twice lol, so my ankles are two different sizes.) or 2) it's a more complicated pattern that I might have to check a chart for etc. It goes way faster to check a chart once for both socks rather than twice, so you end up saving time.

They went on time out for a bit because I was nervous to pick up the stitches on the thumb gusset. (I'm a newer knitter and had never done them before.) But once I got up the courage to do it and could do both, I know it saved me time because had I done them individually, it would have given me more time to overthink doing the second thumb gusset. I can't, just can't knit TAAT on the same needle, it drives me crazy but I love the idea. So I've started setting up everything the same way but on 2 circulars. Cuff 1, cuff 2, and then 5-10 rows on sock 1, then 5-10 on sock 2, back and forth, heel 1, heel 2... if I have a complicated stitch pattern I'd probably just switch between the socks each row but I don't find that as fiddly as yarn management.

  • @mindykannon4650

    TAAT is so much slower, i like to knit socks simultaneously so knitting at the same time on separate needles. The yarn management on the same needle is incredibly time consuming. You are able to twist back and forth but most people do not an it becomes a mess. Plus center pull many times produces a yarn barf which is another time draw. Great podcast

    I want to do my socks TAAT for all the pros. I just have never mastered 2 circs or magic loop in terms of avoiding ladders and wonkiness at the sides. With TAAT, the insides always are rough. I have better results with DPNs or 9-inch circs. I like doing tandem socks. That requires more DPNs or circs but it works for me. I did my advent and socks by Christmas…er…before New Years…that way. I applaud y’all who never have uneven tension at the sides.

    I do not like magic loop or two at a time. I have tried and admire all the taatmers! I use two circs and knit one long tube with cuffs on each end , cut them and do the toes and heels and it's all good. I like cut in heels because they are easy for me to put a new heel in if they wear too much. I get to use up all my yarn that way. Sometimes I do the socks all in the same yarn and sometime contrasting heels and toes. I don't care for the cuff to be different. It is amazing the number of ways to do socks. I love to hear everyones likes and dislikes . Thank you !Cheryl

    I didn’t know that it is said that they knit up slower two at a time. Is that because your rhythm gets a bit paused by changing yarn to the other sock? I would think dons would do the same.

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  Рік тому

      Hi Sharon! So I'm not really sure why there is a feeling that they take longer. I don't think anyone has clocked it. I think what it is is, like you say, the rhythm. However I actually like the rhythm of TAAT and whether it takes longer in a vacuum is moot to me as my human tendencies and second sock syndrome issues will have me not finishing them AT ALL if I'm not doing them together. 🥴

    I have my first set of taat casted on. They are taking me forever. I haven't done it enough to have a rhythm down to keep things organized and tangle free while I'm working. It isn't as enjoyable of a knit for me either due to the tangle maintenance not being second nature so I don't work on them as often as I do my other projects. I don't have sss so I don't forsee myself using taat often, but I also like having a variety in my projects so I will still use it from time to time.

      Hi Charlotte! When I first started TAAT knitting (back in 2018) I gave up on it (for a lot of the reasons you mention here) for knitting socks concurrently...which I eventually abandoned for lack of discipline to actually knit them concurrently...and then I went back to just knitting them one at a time and having a hell of a time finishing them. Here we are now in 2022/2023 and I'm just picking TAAT up again so I can actually finish a pair of socks and it's clicking for me. It may be a thing that just catches on when it catches on. Until then, don't force it. Especially if you find you just don't enjoy it. ❤️

    You absolutely do not need a second set of needles for TAAT. I have always cast on both socks on one circular with a 40-inch cable. You just have to manage your tension at the join.

  • @achimwasp
    @achimwasp Рік тому +1

    Not a solution for me, as I prefer to knit socks on three flexible needles (5" Chiagoo tips with 5 cm cables are my favourites, or Addi Crazy Trio or Hiya Hiya Flyers). So against SSS I force myself to start the second sock as soon as the first one is done - if only the first 4 rounds of the Italian tubular cast on that I like so much. More often than not I then just keep going and e.g. finish the 32 rounds of rib as well or go even further if time allows.

  • @KateColors
    @KateColors Рік тому

    I find I have to remove each sock to another circ in order to to the heel flap and gussets; then, return them to the original circ to finish. This whole process takes way too much time than knitting one at a time and produces a poor product for me. I think of a pair of socks as one project.

That said, I'm going to knit a pair of socks on DPNs, TAAT as if it were Magic Loop so that I can reconnect to my first knitting love, DPNs. TAAT Tip: I have added grommets to all my project bags. Since I always use at least 2 colors for socks, I feed one color for each sock through each grommet, and zip the bag. Then there is no tangled yarn and when I turn my needles, I just flip the bag. Also, I use DPNs for the gusset. The rest of the socks are on my 40” or 47” needles. Hope that helps.

    I love that TAAT works so well for so many people! That’s the magic of knitting, there’s something for everyone. I personally don’t prefer it - constantly dropping and picking up strands of yarn totally interrupts my flow and I don’t like how the “inactive” sock restricts the free movement of my cables, even when they’re super long. One at a time magic loop is where my heart lies.

    I knit two socks at a time simultaneously. I prefer DPNs and I prefer to knit both two at a time on DPNs. I cast on two socks on separate pairs of DPNs and I knit a little on one sock, then catch up the second sock. I am just not a fan of magic loop.

  • @aquinnahsun
    @aquinnahsun Рік тому +14

    2AAT is my preferred sock knitting technique, and toe-up is the way to go. You can easily do Judy’s Magic or the Turkish cast-on with only a few stitches, creating a seamless, beautiful toe tip. Then you just increase from there, with both socks on the single circular. I love to knit socks with the Chiaogoo Mini Twist sock needles. The cords are thin and super-flexible, like a piece of cooked angel hair pasta. No Second Sock Syndrome, ever.

    • @HarmonyInspired
      @HarmonyInspired Рік тому

      I also do TAAT Toe Up. I always use the turkish cast on: wrap the stitches for one sock, tuck the yarn between the needles, slide down, and cast on the second one. I use a 50 inch cable, because I was always worrying the stitches were going to slide off the end. That made me tense and feeling claustrophobic. The 50 inch cable also is handy for magic loop on toques aka beanies.
