It makes me so sad to think that we could have something as good as this as opposed to what Amazon upchucked on the screen. There are people who truly 'get' Tolkien's work, and I'm glad. Thank you for all your hard work, Dave. I appreciate you and what you do!

You really need to carry this to an animation studio and have this made! No amount of money should stop you, kickstarter will get you everything you could need, I know it in my heart! The reason I say an animation studio is because you could have this animated correctly and wouldn't be confined by live action problems. This would be GLORIOUS!!!

I believe Amazon's money would certainly stop it. They unfortunately own the rights to everything he tells. And the Tolkien estate would own the rest. Unless you can crowd fund another 250 million for unfinished tales and simirillian we're stuck living in these dark days of Amazon

Thank you, Rainbow Dave. This is what Tolkien is all about: not the visuals, not the flashy action scenes, not the high budgets or costumes or any of that. His works were all about the heart of story telling and the ability to tell that story through the birth of language and brand new cultures. A secondary world, familiar enough, but also so other-worldly that it stirs up inspiration and hope in this one. Thank you again for all the hard work that you do and for all your passion and enthusiasm that you pour into it.

    Dear Dave,
When you say 'the Second Age pretty much adapts itself', you are seriously underestimating your own incredible storytelling talent. And I for one am very grateful you are putting it to such good use.
In fact, waiting for this video (well worth it btw) I rewatched your previous adaptations 4 or 5 times. They did not get boring, because you so deeply understand what makes Tolkien's stories tick, even after almost a century.
I do wonder: how do you research your videos? And which editions do you prefer to read/use?
I am in your debt, good sir.

Sir this is just amazing. Thank you for "creating" an amazing Adaptation. I am in awe & speechless at the Tar Miriel story line. Imagine on screen Cynthia Adai everyday watching some of her citizens cruelly sacrificed for Sauron but having to hide her emotions because of the bigger plan to save what's still pure & good of Numenor (Elendil, Isildur & the faithful).
Then at the end accepting her fate that in order for the faithful to have a future, she can't leave Numenor, but has to die with it. In this instance she chooses to sacrifice herself (almost in honor of those who couldn't make that choice) only for Eru lluvator to redeem her broken spirit before her lifeless body is consumed by fire & water. And for Sauron to watch helplessly as his most hated foe is redeemed while his body & spirit is forever broken is such an amazing juxtaposition.
Then that Aragon (crowning) song being sang by Elendil on the shores of middle Earth....Just breathtaking to imagine.
Thank you so so much. I wait with baited breath for Season 5.

This had me tearing up at the end. Like you said, Tolkien’s themes (and your interpretation of them from a literary to a cinematic medium) are so powerful and deeply touching. Who among us hasn’t struggled with the desire for deathlessness? And the way Tar-Muriel’s death mirrors that of Elros? Poetic and heartbreaking.

I wrote a fanfic some years ago that also had Miriel accept what happened, make the climb up to Meneltarma as Numenor was being destroyed around her, beg for forgiveness and plea for the safety of the faithful on the ships. Oh, yes, I had the Eagles come and circle her in acceptance of her pleas. Because the Eagles would always come when sincere pleas were made to Iluvatar on the mountaintop.

So in the end, the sad story of Númenor is about accepting the gift of death. There are two things given to us humans: we are born, and we will die. How and when, nobody knows. It really only matters what we do with our time between. I always admired my grandmother. She said "it is enough" at a rather high age (92 years) She survived two World Wars, and basically ensured that I was at a good place when she decided to leave (she basically stopped eating and taking her medicine). Within three months from being rather fit to entirely weak and frail, she left us for a better place.

It was a little wait, but a worthwhile one at that - this video was truly amazing, how you can adapt Tolkien's mythology in such a compelling way, and fit invented storylines so seamlessly! I applaud you for your dedication to this craft.
One very small visual detail I would add is at the time Elendil's ships of the Faithful are blown by the wind and scattered, the screen sort of pans out slightly, to where we can see extremely far away lands like the frozen north of middle earth or the jungles south. Then these lands would sort of "sink" below the horizon, referencing Illuvatar making Arda round.

I love the contrast of Pharazon and Elendil, one landing on the west, the other landing on Middle earth, one claiming what is not his, the other accepting the decree of Eru; one voicing his challenge in Adunaic, the other singing his resolution in Quenya. Elendil should sing with resolve, slow but strong, and his voice should bring Gilgalad and Cirdan in wonder walking toward him, and when he says “Ten Ambar metta” he should look up, and meet Gilgalad’s eyes, and the high king should extend his hand, and Elendil they could clasp hands; the last shot of the episode.

Btw, regarding the first season, I had an idea: it would be cool to develop the story of Elrond and Celebrian. I know that in the lore they first meet at Rivendell after the war, but for the sake of developing their character I think they should meet in Lindon or at the lake near the Shire. Then, through the season they can think of eachother. Celebrian being full of life and energetic, while Elrond is more "insecure" (at this stage), a bit melancholic but of course always kind. Then, when their roads divide, Celebrian meets a young man among the Midde men (Bree), and develops an affection to him, only to find out he is dead, when the 300 years time jump occurs (circa year 1500), to develop the theme of death and deathlesness. At the end of the second season, Elrond and Celebrian meet again in Imladris and understand that their characters complete eachother and in this time of destruction love is needed.

    • @PLKinka
      @PLKinka 2 роки тому

They don't technically have to *meet* for this to work. They can exchange glances in the passing and hear a lot about each other, already having a face to place those snippets of information to. Then their meeting would make for a scene like in the legends, their whole lives, the world itself pushing them towards their destiny, and them realizing they have never been whole but never knew what exactly what they missed.
Also, a fancy taken to a human would play to the theme of Elrond being the timeless sibling, and Celebrian being a part of his world, humans passing, but living on in different ways. Reversed when Arwen makes the opposite choice.
(Yea, I'm reading too much into this, I love a solid drama, and I also think that a love story destined to happen (and having a happy ending) would gain interest of femine part of the audience. We know they will get together, so I think pointlessly focusing on "if" destroys a lot of prequels. "When" and "how" are much more interesting. And not focusing on their love arc would be a missed chance since a)Galadriel, Elrond and Arwen are big, recognizable parts of the brand and franchise, so not hyping it up would be missing a chance ; and b) they are important part of the story, gluing all of this together up to already established LotR, and will be constant presence in the tale anyway. Not milking it a bit for a bigger, more emotional payoff would really disappointing.)

@@PLKinka yup, I agree, I know of people just hearing about a person and falling in love with her, even if they never met her. But, on the other hand, we have go find something to do to our man Elrond, who is just hanging out in Lindon the entire season. In ROP they put him in the Khazad-dum story, but if we stay canonical we should think of something else. Do you have some idea?

I think that not many people recognize the significance of the fact that Elendil, and therefore Isildur, and later Aragorn, are the firstborn descendants of Elros Tar Minyatur, and so it’s fitting that the line continues through them.

OMG!! Rainbow Dave! Amazon should hire you instantly. I found myself going thru so many emotions listening and envisioning your made-for-the-screen version of the 2nd Age. And can't wait to get to the next section. Your love of Tolkien's work comes thru and is passed on to us, your avid listeners. I have The Silmarillion. Bought it 10+ years ago. Haven't had the luxury of time to read it. So I bought the Audible version also. And while that is a good read, it lulls me to sleep and that's not an option when I'm driving. So I find myself coming back to your videos, over and over. Some I've watched more than once. You're such a gift to Tolkien's work, for you share it with such passion, love and dedication that one can't help but be hooked by such a great mythology. While I fear during my lifetime there may not be a version(s) of The Silmarillion (which I LOVE so much, thanks to you), in the screens, I hope it is made one day and you're hired as the lead writer. Thank you for all your hard work. 👍

I think many Men's desire for deathlessness is somewhat similar but still much different to some of the Elves' desire for ruling - i.e. Galadriel for a time. Elves were immortal and perhaps some of those who had made the journey to Valinor became bored of perfection.
Feanor for example achieved perfection through the Silmarils, but he was still uneasy and restless in what is pretty much heaven. Not only did he became obsessed with his creation, but he was very firm in wanting to be the crown prince of the Noldor and saw his halfbrothers as a threat.
Later on Turgon grew contempt and decided to seclude himself and his people in Gondolin against Ulmo's initial advice and after his warning was delivered by Tuor. I mean it's understandable for him to go back into hiding after the disastrous defeat in the Nirnaeth, but I guess he grew very accustomed to living and ruling in the safety of his lavish city kingdom instead of following up on Ulmo's warning and heading out into the perilous outside world.
I think this can also apply to Thranduil to some extent, who became more and more reclusive in order to hold on to his ever shrinking kingdom.
Although I could be way off 😅

Thank you for all your adaptation videos (Second Age Seasons 1-4). It is a breath of fresh air after searching the web for alternative interpretation to the RoP TV show. Echoing many commenters, you have demonstrated quite well that excellent adaptations using the same source material is possible, without the need for a billion dollars, but with true talent, respect and genuine appreciation for Tolkien’s work. Annon allen :)

Having watched through the entire 1st season of RoP and now having seen these hypothetical propositions of what could have been...I'm not even angry anymore...I'm saddened by this juxtaposition that emphasizes just how wasteful Amazon was with all the money and license to create the absolute pinnacle of Tolkeinian storytelling immortalized in living color and yet...they fell so far short of the mark. THIS is the adaptation we all deserved! Casual Tolkein fans, Loremasters and newcomers alike. I felt genuinely enveloped by your narration of the story and wildly impressed by your creative navigation of the lore. The deep thematic undertones, sensible plot devices, adherence to the rich history and excellent delivery was all just superb. Yet the most mind-blowing part of it all is how a trillion dollar media giant with a billion dollar budget couldn't even get CLOSE to this compelling masterpiece. Well done.

Sounds well thought out, planned, & respectful to the source material & the author.
Your planning reminds me of Babylon 5 - the entire show was planned before any of it was shot - and it shows (especially on rewatch).
I would certainly watch your version & likely buy merch. (My family haven't watched ROP and don't intend to).
Upon further thought (and after completing the video) I love the fact that, yes this follows the movies, and yet it precedes it. And the whole time it vastly overshadows the events of LOTR - as Tolkien intended. It also solves the problem of prequels overshadowing / outshining the media that came before but chronologically happened later.
I honestly believe that your version would have been a HUGE success.

That Fair-Guise-Sauron, trusted advisor to Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, King of Númenor, called in sick the day Ar-Pharazôn's fleet of ships headed off to invade Valinor has always been the funniest thing in all of the Tolkien legendarium.
Like, you could just see him slowly sliding out of the frame of the shot.
*cough, cough* My apologies, my King Ar-Pharazôn. I… *cough, cough*... I don't think I can make such a long sea journey. I really really really wish I could. Really.
A blind man could see the invasion of Valinor was going to be a shitshow for the Númenorians. 😂

Man this was so great. Amazon are fools for not hiring you to do the ROP writing. What they did is a disgrace to put it lightly. This is so well thought out. The explanation of not only what rights are used but also character and timeline explanations make this much easier to follow and because I know you are a Tolkien lore master I don’t question your true intent which I think mirrors most of us Tolkien enthusiasts and reflects our shared interest in staying true to the work. It has been a great experience. Thank you I appreciate it 👍👍

Someone send this to the Amazon writers' room so they can learn how to actually craft a powerful woman. Soroniel is clearly a total badass, and Miriel - Zimraphael is regal and sympathetic (and I think the actual Miriel actress could be phenomenal playing this version of her character). I am literally crying at the end you gave her. Damn...
