    I always noticed that Finrod had the perfect genetic cocktail of the ambitious Noldor, the graceful Vanyar, and the more relaxed and serene Teleri. He had a perfectly balanced temperament of wisdom, bravery, and loving kindness. Tolkien was such a genius.

    Finrod should really not work as a character - he is just is so perfect, he should seem two dimensional or boring - but no - he really stays with me - he is friend to nearly all men, dwarves and elves - he betrayed by his own people and his sacrifice is tragic and brutal - all for a mortal - (sort of Christ-like in many ways) - he is by far my favorite elf in all of Tolkien’s writing

      I think it works because he's not an all-out macho man like Fëanor or Boromir, but with his harp, his skill at arms and tactics (though not a berserker style fighter like Tulkas or Huor) and his sharp mind, he is more of a laid-back though pure-hearted hero.

    • @asraarradon4115
      @asraarradon4115 2 роки тому +13

      That's how you make a "perfect" character work. You make his life that of sacrifice. Always doing the right thing, no matter how much it may cost them-always bearing burdens until they can bear no more-until it cost them everything. It's why characters like these have to have an ending. Heroism demands sacrifice, and ultimate heroism demands the ultimate of sacrifices. Without that, you end up with a Superman character that goes through multiple rewrites as people lose interest, and in the end never really regains that.

      He's what a powerful elf who lived in the light of the trees would be like if he had super low levels of pride. That's his super power. That's the primary difference. Because he did not have the pride of a superior being, he wasn't a cunt to everyone. When you aren't a cunt to human characters, human characters like you.

    I agree with all you have said, but there is an interesting side note to that phial, which I do believe has been mentioned previously, but is also relevant. The Light in the phial is the light of the Silmaril taken by Beren after Finrod gave his life to ensure the continuation of the quest. In a very real sense the departed elf and man from the initial quest gained vengeance against their tormentor via the agency of Galadriel.
    Further, and it has never been remarked upon, I wonder if Galadriel created the phial in the memory of her brother who perished on the quest to retrieve the jewel, and so to keep some aspect of him with her, cold comfort that it would be.
    Another great video.

    • @Patrick-qed
      @Patrick-qed 2 роки тому +4

      These are excellent points. And to expand on them: in Jackson's Hobbit movies (leaving aside criticisms for the moment), when the White Council goes to Dol Guldur, the film version has Galadriel banish Sauron. If you look closely at her hand she is raising up, she is holding the Phial. IIRC the books ascribe the banishment more to the devices of Saruman, but there is a real logic of using the Phial to banish Sauron. It contains the light of a silmaril, and thus the light of the Two Trees. That could overpower a Maia like Sauron much more likely than the devices of another Maia, Saruman.

    • @jayt9608

      @@Patrick-qed,I believe that the Lord of the Rings indicates that Ssuron dud not actually resist them as he could have because Barad-dûr was nearly rebuilt and he agaun was ready to rule in his own name. "Then he gave way before us, but only feigned to flee, and soon after came to the Dark Tower and openly declared himself." I do agree that the light of the phial gathered from a Silmaril, which was blessed by the Valar after gathering the light of the two trees, would have been a potent artifact against him, especially in the hand of the creator of such an object.

    6585 years.... dear me, this video made me realize Galadriel really knew how to harbour a grudge...
    Finrod's fate for any reason always made me more angry than sad. Or let's say: my anger grew from my sadness about it, and no soothening comment about him being resurrected and having an happy ending in a far away paradise made me befriend with his passing.
    When I first read the story of Beren and Finrod getting trapped by Sauron, I thought: 'Oh, but that's his own place. To escape from your own cellars can't really be a big problem, can it?' - It was.

    eyyyy! my favorite character is Finrod too!
    I feel like people forget/don’t realize that he’s basically the reason that the Bëorians and Hadorians fight Morgoth at all. Andreth makes it VERY clear in the Athrabeth that the Edain do not care about the Valar and aren’t even sure if they exist. The only god whose existence they can prove is Morgoth. They are not truly fighting *against Morgoth*, but rather *for Finrod*. It is their respect for him which drives their actions to oppose Morgoth in the 1st Age. Only at the very end of the 1st Age are the Edain bound to the Eldar by blood: and this comes through Finrod’s beloved cousin Turgon.

    Can I just say what a wonderful refresher course these videos have been? It's been nearly a decade since I last reread the Silmarillion or the History of Middle-Earth books, but I've really been in that high fantasy mood that only Tolkien can really scratch, and your videos hit the spot perfectly. I really appreciate how you highlight some of my favorite themes in Tolkien, especially how bonds of friendship and love between people who are different from each other can empower them to resist dark powers of evil and hatred, how love for the beautiful works of the past doesn't have to mean blindness to the mistakes and misdeeds of its heroes,and how even in dark times, with courage and kindness, the dominos can be knocked over that will one day bring back the light. Finrod really embodies the first and third of those particularly well, and that shone through in this video.
    One quibble, just a pet peeve of mine as a therapist: "psychotic" is not a synonym for dangerous, unpredictable, or "crazy". It means having delusions, hallucinations, or other symptoms of schizophrenia, none of which really fit Feanor. He's proud, vengeful, temperamental, and vicious to be sure! (As well as brilliant, creative, and passionate.) But I don't see anything to suggest he's psychotic.

    • @tolkienuntangled
      @tolkienuntangled  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoy the videos. Fair quibble about the word psychotic. I think when I recorded this, I originally used the word psychopathic, but then went back and re-recorded it as psychopathic doesn't fit Feanor either. I should probably have chosen a better word than psychotic though to replace it.

    • @seanhartel5362
      @seanhartel5362 2 роки тому +1

      @@tolkienuntangled true, I think psychopathic is a better description. He simply couldn’t empathize with Olwë and the love of his ships comparable to the love of the gems of the Noldor. And because he couldn’t, he thought it validated his decision to seize the ships by force. His disregard of his half brothers is further evidence of this. I’d say he was teetering on the verge of sociopathic.

    • @windalfalatar333
      @windalfalatar333 2 роки тому +2

      @@seanhartel5362 I've lived with a psychopath and psychopathic isn't true either. Just as the mental health clinician said above, he is vengeful, proud and temperamental. But psychopaths take delight in causing harm to others and only care about themselves. Fëanor's story is a tragic one (and no psychopath's is ever really tragic). Fëanor truly loves his father, Finwë. He is devastated when his father is murdered. In my opinion, he avenges the killing of his father more than the taking of the Silmarils. The Silmarils somehow embody his father, as if retrieving them will bring his father back to life. He is envious of his father's love for his brothers, because he wants to be unique in his father's heart, and so he wants his mother Míriel to be unique also. His father stays by his mother's side, by the side of her dead though perfectly preserved body in the garden of Yavanna (it must have been Yavanna) for aeons but eventually he lets go and marries Indis of the Vanyar. It is discussed in the History of Middle-earth (The War of the Jewels?) whether Finwë should be allowed to remarry. So you can imagine the resendment Fëanor feels for his father and then his father proves his love for him by accepting the banishment of Fëanor to Formenod for himself also, and because of this he is in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets killed for it. For which Fëanor must blame himself. So no, not a psychopath.

Tolkien is such a genius for creating a character who has such an impact, yet is so subtle in its coincidence. To me personally great characters are those who have flaws, who are conflicted and morally challenging. And yet the _best_ characters are those who are kind, and strong, and just unambiguously good - and yet they still work, and do not become stale or boring. It's a lot easier to write a Feanor, it's a lot harder to write a Finrod. Always an absolute pleasure to see an outright good, yet not boring character, they are so few and far between, and Finrod is undoubtedly one of the best i ever saw. My very favorite character in the Legendarium, mad props to Tolkien for writing him. Best king, 12/10.

    I am disappointed that you made no mention of the dialogue of Finrod and Andreth. It seems to me that alone among the high elves, Finrod sought to understand the nature of the Mortal Heart and recognized that the Hildor were coeval spirits in the mind of Iluvatar, as opposed to most others who looked down upon the Atani. In Tolkien's writings, I found the speech of Finrod and Andreth among the most profound and moving in the entire legendarium.

      Their 'looking down" upon the Atani might be because of their jealousy fueled by Morgoth's lies. Remember some of the Noldor went to ME, not only cuz of Feanor but they also feel like they have the higher authority (being the "first borns") in ME over Men, and that Morgorth told them that the reason why the Valar kept them Valinor is that Eru favors the Atani with giving them the gift and that ME is reserved for the Atani to have dominion over (which is true but he twisted it in a way that it made it sound like the Eldar are the inferior race).

    One interesting thing in Tolkien’s universe is that sometimes some people will be a synthesis of all the peoples we have learned to love : Earendil and Elwing are the first example that comes to mind, being half-elves related to nearly all of Illuvatar’s children. Well, Finrod also do : he descends from all the Calaquendi’s clans, but he also, and most importantly, he was the first to befriend Dwarves and Men. And when we see how influential the couple of Earendil and Elwing is, Finrod awesomeness makes more sens.

Proves that even the most worthless and pitiful writers that nobody wanted them before, can still make humorous shows without even trying, they turned one of the strongest, fairer and beautiful elven lady Galadriel to something that goes by many names in the show like Karen-driel, Guy-ladriel, He-Man-driel, Marry Suegdriel or SheHulk-driel. That's an interesting question. My instinct is to say Morgoth but that's probably a bit too easy. Perhaps one of the more corrupt Numenorean kings, maybe even Ar Pharazon? There seems to be a deep arrogance in what Putin's doing, and a sense that smaller nations don't really matter next to his mightier country (at least in his mind). The 'might makes right' mentality is something we only see in Tolkien's villains, and I think if Tolkien were alive today, he'd have some very harsh criticism of Putin.
