- Why is Brass: Birmingham #1 on BGG? Is it the theme? Is it because it has a dark mode? Maybe Quinns can clear this up for us.

I nearly spit my drink at the Monopoly comparison.
...into a bag
Yeah. "Spit"...
@@deiseach02"drink"...
"nearly"
"I"
I remember watching your original Brass: Birmingham video and I was kind of convinced, but not FULLY convinced I should get the game. In just 2 minutes, I already see the appeal of this game and I'm slapping it on a wishlist.
Please do more short-form content like this, especially of videos you've done in the past that are really old!!
Better yet, slap it on your "Owned" list.
You're in for a astonishingly mind-blowing treat then, sir...
Wow, I was just coming here to say the same thing.
I loved this short video!
Also for reviews buried under hours of podcast
Keep in mind that their review of the original review of Brass was negative and they suddenly changed their tune when the hyped Birmingham came out. If you're going to try Brass, I strongly recommend starting with Lancashire.
Quinns: "I can't imagine a person who's excited to simulate the industrial revolution"
Me: Lost 1000 hours of my life to Factorio
Me as a Victoria 3 player too.
Those are rookie numbers...
The theme is unironically a big plus for me... The industrial revolution is perfect for an economy game.
The reason it's in my top 3 all time favorites, is because it is the most interactive strategy game I've ever played in my life. 80% of the actions you take in this game have a big immediate impact on every other player in the game (both positive and negative impact). and 99% have a big immediate impact on at least one other player.
Lancashire of Birmingham for 2P? 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏿🤷♀️
@@zeradox1901 I've played Birmingham for a few years - currently my BGG account says I've played it ~20 times, not the most, but more than a few. That's been 2 player a lot, 3 and 4 player a few times. I recently picked up Lancashire because of this exact same question, and because someone was getting rid of an unopened KS version for next to nothing.
After 3 plays of Lancashire, my wife and I agree - Birmingham is the route to go. Lancashire just feels like a race to sell your cotton mills. Do you go for the shipyards? We've both won with them, and I had a loss with one. Industries all having the same link value makes it a bit "eh" when scoring that part of the game. I'm glad I own it, but Birmingham is far and away a better experience IMO. Much more flexibility and room to try different strategies.
I agree. Every move you make in this game is loaded with consequence. I love it.
@@zeradox1901 Both are good at 2p, but I generally only do that to teach people the game. They both shine at 3 or 4. Start with Lancashire either way.
If you like highly interactive strategy games I can't recommend Food Chain Magnate enough. SU&SD have a great video on that too if you're unsure.
Absolutely love this style of video. Short and sweet and gets me excited to play. Would love to see more of these
I can 100% back this up.
Got it because of the original review and...it's great.
It's one of those ones where as much as I like playing other games, there's a little part of me going "we could be playing brass instead".
Love it, this is such a great format for revisiting games that have already been reviewed and seeing if they’re still thought of as positively, if at all. Think the length works a treat and I can imagine this would be a whole lot easier/quicker to make than the usual 20 minute mega reviews.😊
That monopoly comparison made me belly laugh, some true poetry any fan of heavy games will understand.
Really? It was fine but I've seen so many heavy/euro gamers bash monopoly it doesn't even get a chuckle from me anymore.
Funny or not, anyone that bashes Monopoly will get a chuckle from me!
Caverna does the daytime nighttime thing on their board
I knew I've seen it, just couldn't remember where
I loved this short format video. I'd like to see a few more along with your usual line up!
Love the new short videos format. Looking forward to more experiments. ❤
I always thought that was Matt the one excited about simulating a spreadsheet
Outstanding! I’m biased given Brass is one of my all time favourites (and it was your video on Brass : Birmingham that convinced me to take the plunge on that version), but this captures why it’s so damn good perfectly. In just 2 minutes! How!!
Caverna does the night time/day time board thing. Though I don't expect Quinns to remember every board in every game ever 😂
Caverna got the to-the-attic treatment tho, they don't like it enough to forget it.
Who could remember Caverna when Agricola exists?
I haven't played agricola since caverna came out. To each their own.
@@helxis you'll be surprised to learn that some of us like Caverna
@@ryanc3201 You mean "appalled".
Love this! Haven't played Brass: Birmingham in a bit, but it's still one of my favorite board games
Short lil vids like this. This is GREAT
As someone who drove to Birmingham last week, all I could think of is this game as I looked at all the road signs.😂
Informative, entertaining, accurate, hilarious...great video about a great game! I'm excited to see new styles of videos from you and the team!
Perfect timing, we just played the original Brass the other day and we all really enjoyed it. I just watched an how to play video of Brass Birmingham and I do kinda want to get it as well. I love wooden ships, so I may miss seeing them around the board, but those rum barrels do look fun.
beer
This and Caverna are my two favorite games and both of them have day and night sides for the boards for whatever reason. Weird design choice but mechanically both are perfect.
1:57: Perfect mini-review of Monopoly!
SU&SD never misses a chance to diss Mono in the most elegant fashion!
Why indeed. Birmingham by lamplight is the superior Birmingham.
Very good choice. You played my favorite piece of classic music to show my favorite board game 😊
Lowlands can be flipped (player boards at least) for a rainy or sunny aesthetic - which is close
Caverna also has day/night sides!
Played my first game yesterday... LOVE IT!
I played this once for 30 minutes in a demo and been looking for it for so long 😢
This video just needed Matt to burst in yelling "It's a family show!" At the end. I'm not sure I'll be able to look at monopoly the same way again now.
Alright. I see your experimental style is coming nicely along.
Quinns I love your shirt, where'd you get it?? I love the pastel colours!
Im sold by this video alone
This video is honestly great, I’ve been dying for high quality, short form board game content and this is exactly that. I’m really happy to see this channel grow and try new things, keep it up.👍
you should check out 3MBG (3 minute board games)!
Yup. I need this game. I've seen it at my LGS and I am going to buy a copy now. Thanks SUSD for causing yet another impulse board game purchase.
Get Lancashire first.
Love it! Great video
I think you'll find Can't Stop has the 'day/night' flipping board thingie
wonderful video. just had to rewatch it right away for the monopoly joke
Quinns getting so excited about Brass: Birmingham that his short turns into a medium-length.
Is this a new format you guys are testing? If it helps to get things done quicker, why not? Good work! But please don't neglect the higher production versions for "big games". I love your jokes and humor sprinkled inbetween. Keep up the good work! Cheers from Germany!
That monopoly line 😂😂
Thanks a lot, now I have to buy it
Thanks for the laugh!
Short form video are fantastic for introducing new comers of the hobby
Yes, but, Brass is not. :P
Well then. What the hell am I supposed to do with all these bags?
I bought this game, it never made to table and I sold it sealed.. sad times. I still haven’t played it yet.
Nice shirt, good music choice. 10/10
I am the one excited about simulating the Industrial Revolution, Quinn’s, and I demand you imagine me!
I love the theme and feel it when I play the game. It inspired me to read The Most Powerful Idea in the World which was about the people and innovations that fueled the industrial revolution. Dry but very interesting.
Watch a few episodes of Peaky Blinders and then throw this thing down.
The answer to the "why?" question at the end is simply: Because it was a stretch goal.
Which is really just "because crowdfunding", which is the same reason this game is #1 on BGG.
Everybody talking about the game and me just wondering where to get those poker chips
Hrmmmm. This video actually has me interested in brass birmingham
I really want to know where you can get those poker chips from. They look lovely!
I want to know where you got them too, they look great!
I thought I couldn't like SU&SD more and then they use a Master and Commander tune in their video..😍
FWIW, Caverna also has a flippabke daytime/nighttime player board.
Class video, love the game too. It's nice to see something else on the top for once tbh.
When you remove campaign hotness from the equation, it has been #1 for quite a while.
I absolutely love the theme
Caverna has a back side on all the boards that’s nighttime. Mezo’s main board kind of does this too.
I think Oak has this as well.
Those are beautiful poker chips. Anyone know where Quinns got them from? I might need to get a small set to spruce up any games that use money.
Roxley's iron clays
They come with the Deluxe editions of the game.
You guys should take a look at Age of Industry aswell! Its like the third brother of the lancashire and Birmingham siblings.
Its enough different to deserve its own video to the highest rated gane in the world!
1:32 Actually if you build the coal mine and then the canal then you won't be able to sell the coal anyway because you need to be connected to the network when you build it in order to sell it. If you build it like this you can only use it for building factories and railroad basically with no profit unless by profit you mean flipping the coal mine tile.
"That's okay because you've still got uh, some, uh debt." Welcome to college in America.
Smart players in Brass only take on debt that they know will be used to make them even more money in the end. Now if only people used that level of consideration in real life...
When are you guys gonna review Fabula Ultima?? goddamn
“In a bag” as in doing the action while inside a large bag eg a sleeping bag, or doing the action into a bag in order to prevent spillage? Which is it, Quinns? The public needs to know.
I'm studying history at the unversity so I'm actually one of the people who get excited by the theme and how well it's connected to the game mechanics!
I'm not a fan of dry euros, so I've never been interested in playing Brass: Birmingham. After this video… I'm intrigued!
Start with Lancashire.
Woo short form content!
Also my beloved ❤ Best game ever
I can answer firsthand the why of the day-time night-time sides.
Because it's COOL.
Mr Vice President, we've got to leave now. Dark Mode has escaped the software development world and has spread into boardgames.
Trickerion's board has a daytime side and a nighttime side 🙂
I never played the game but I understand the hype now after a simple 2 minute video
Good, just remember to play Lancashire first.
Shorts are violence against eye balls
Brass is my favorite game. Its a master piece of game design, simplicity, art and flavor. I just cant stop playing and more, i just cant find what to improve mechanics wise. Its brilliant and i will fight anyone that says otherwise
This made it so much clearer how the game plays instead of talking about how it works. I NEED this game now
Get Lancashire first.
Yes, Brass really is one of the best games of all time. The Birmingham version is quite good too.
Yes, but everyone should start with Lancashire.
@@helxis Well, for over 10 years it was the only version you could play. But even though Birmingham is a watered down version, I'm glad it made people really appreciate Martin Wallace's probably best design.
The new edition joint release created a bubble for Birmingham, and once it was ranked aboved Lancashire on BGG, that drove first-time players to it.
Can anyone say if it is fun to play with two players as well?
I mean…how nice is that bag?
Yea, this is it, experimental niche found. We’re back lads.
Please dear Christ so this for every video old enough to feature Paul.
When NoPunIncluded did this video a month ago I was like sure sure I get what you mean. But this video nails it and on top of that, it's almost 150% shorter!
2:04
.....
That was a really inappropriate and effective analogy
You've just managed to convey in two and a bit minutes why I never want to play this game again. Well done.
just as a heads up, I see this as a normal video, and not a "shorts" video. It also doesn't show up under "shorts" in the channel. It could be intentional, but I would look into it if I were you.
I’m pretty sure shorts have a strict 60 second time limit, so this cannot be a short as it is over twice that long.
@@gfrung4 ah right, I forgot about that... why would you use this aspect ratio, though?
@@fernando47180 To trick people into thinking it is short.
What about Lancashire btw?
I assume this should have been a short? 👀 Still love it though! 😄
I think I felt physical pain when you flipped the board 😩
I hope anyone who watches this immediately goes back and watches the original review. Fantastic and hilarious and delightfully points out that when were moaning about the industrial revolution we should also think about how lucky we are things have changed 😂
Does it have a solo mode
Shrewsbury! 🎉❤
Was the reference to ‘There Will Be Blood’ intended?
I guess it depends on who's inside the bag.
hey i like the industrial revolution aesthetic
Why "of all time". Aren't there still times to come?
Maybe
I don't know. 'Cause?
I liked this.
I will still like big reviews.
.... but also, I liked this
I may not be excited to simulate the industrial revolution but I am excited because Birmingham
Great video but only one note: Why isn't it called SUSD is getting exPEARimental?
This game looks so boring, but I really want to play it... Sadly my gaming group doesn't share this excitement with me
First in the first Playlist of games that get their own Playlist and a hoard of videos. 10 games, 100 videos. Next up, a video examining why Heat remains at the top of the BGG Hotness list. Is it the name?
Heat is a solid design with a lot of stuff packed in the box for a decent price. And then they created a false scarcity by not producing enough of the game so that people are doing anything to get a copy of it.
@helxis My post was mainly joking, commented with the name of Heat, but also mainly commenting the channel is now doing multiple videos on a single game. The Hotness list is worth a study. Other games are in a similar situation as Heat. There is Scout. Try to get a copy of that game. Maybe people get Dealt instead, which is similar.
filmed in a cellphone?
Caverna. The player boards flip between day and night. And the night side does not match any of the tiles you put out, so it's a bit pointless.
"I can imagine [someone who's excited to simulate the Industrial Revolution], I just don't want to"
Why don't you want to imagine me, I'm lovely ; ~ ;
that's what I thought 🥲
It has a night side and a dark night side. Its the best game there is, so they can do this
Brass is one of my friends top three games in no small part because he is very interested in the industrial revolution. Imagine away.
