- This week we review everyone's fave local space-orb: MOON. But what is the moon? What does it taste like? Is it better with two or three players? Can a Clanger ever truly know love? None of this and more in today's vid.

"What if we both have the same amount of red flags at the end of the round?" I say the same thing after every first date.
Shake hands and walk away.
@@peterclarke7240 That's brilliant. Your casual resolve to just initiate physical contact, without caring if they're even willing to at this stage with someone who already raised some red flags, will immediately raise another red flag, thereby breaking the tie...
That number might be zero!
Congratulations, you've gained an arch-nemesis!
@@Healermain15 After just one date? Nah, arch-nemesis would more like a 5 year relationship with an equal amount of red flags, maybe with kids involved as well.
I like this new Matthew guy. Good for Tom to give him a chance
lol
Fun fact. Because Quinns is a tall man, the small step appears much smaller to him
Matt is about 6', too, met him at pax Philly last year
"why are there loads of clones of me hidden underneath the floor?" yes!!!! such a good movie.
People hate Star Realms? It's such a great go-to, quick two player for the end of a gaming night. And it's one of those GIANT STACK OF CARDS games like Clank where you can just get a kick out of running into a card you haven't seen before.
I ALSO love ”Star Realms”, so much so that I Kickstarted the Über Box and it. Is. GORGEOUS.
"Jim henson" the picture, the deadpan. Laughed out loud by myself. I really like this channel.
Every time they recommend Race for the Galaxy (so every other video) it makes me want to play it again but also seriously wish it got a jazzed up new edition with legible cards.
Roll for the galaxy is where it's at
Roll for the Galaxy is one of my favourite games. The expansions are so-so (More tiles, great. Other bits, less so), but the game is SO good. And I say this as someone who bounced right off Race.@@SwedishWookie
Legible how? RtfG gets a lot of flak for its iconography, but it's consistent and intuitive - not to mention any card that's less intuitive contains text to tell you exactly what it does.
@@Gamer2k4 even with the text, it feels like you need the Legend sheet from the rules to understand the iconography. But the main thing is that the text and icons are all so small. I don't know how they'd fix it with the amount of info that needs to be on the cards, but it's still a barrier to an otherwise pretty accessible game.
@@SwedishWookie i like Roll for the Galaxy but it doesn't scratch the same itch for me as Race (and Tiny Epic Galaxies scratches a similar itch to Roll while being cheaper and smaller)
Having Matt carry on conversations with Tom during the review is always a treat.
Thanks Reginald, we know you did your best.
the unfortunate part of the heart score tokens - it was mentioned repeatedly during the kickstarter and they decided to go ahead with it anyways. Look at super motherload from roxley for how rough double sided tokens that are wildly different are
The Gonzo helmet is the best background joke in ages.
That reference at the end gave me a good laugh. :)
I didn't get it 😢
@@jarjarperawatch the movie "Moon" with Sam Rockwell, great movie.
My wife loves Star Realms, Matt, you're not alone. She likes to crush me by hard focusing on Blob ships and it sucks.
It's all about the yellow. Just watching the life drain out of your opponent's eyes as you play your whole deck in one turn, AND you make them discard half of theirs
Blob is the way, praise the blob.
I dunno, using reds to streamline your deck into a finely honed buying/destroying machine is pretty satisfying. The moment you realise it's finally impossible for you to have bad hand...
The glee my wife has crushing me in Star Realms should be outlawed
The part with rovers going out to other players' cards and thus you being motivated to keep track of others' tableaus reminds me of 51st State and Imperial Settlers. Those have the open production locations that produce resources for you and also for the first other player to visit them. Not to mention the part that you can, and often should, raaaaaaaaaaze other people's stuff.
And they have (some) drafting too!
For a rover rollover I was kind of hoping it was a "pass the pigs" situation in which you'd roll all the rovers and count up the ones that landed on their snouts and whomever has the most snouts wins the points.
Pigs.... in .... space!
WE LOVE THE MOOOOOOON
BECAUSE IT IS CLOSE TO US
BUT NOT AS MUCH AS A SPOON
I think everybody who lived through that immediately belted it out upon seeing the title, like I did. Or at least I hope so.

WHICH IS MORE USE FOR EATING SOUP
the song is more fun to remember than to listen to
The reference to the movie "Moon" was a perfect way to end this video. Lol
*GASP* A SUSD on a game I got recently! Nice! Shoutout to Villagers and Streets as well referenced in a SUSD previews episode. Love all three of those games.
Hey, I love Star Realms, too - so you're not the only one. You're onto something with the slowness of the game at larger player count. It's gloriously fast and cut-throat at 2, and that pace and tension seep away as the player count rises. Still, it's a fun game and I love playing it. With the variety of expedition cards to influence strategy and the jockeying for flag majority with other players this game keeps me coming back. Thanks for the great review.
I saw someone playing this at a local community boardgame day a month ago and it was so beautiful, its good to know it is also good.
How dare that cameraman defame star realms??? It's simple, true, but it has enough strategy to be fun, it plays quickly, setup is a breeze, and the deckbuilding is addictive. I demand the firing of the defamer this instant.
It's also easy to teach, has a bunch of different strategies, and plays super quickly! Loved playing it 3 players with my dad and son!
Excellent reference to a very underrated movie. Well done, Sir.
Ah! Nice reference to the movie Moon at the end. I see what you did there. Sam Rockwell, eat your heart out.
Those Moon ( movie ) jokes at the end were great !!!!! Nailed it !!
This game appears to have a lot of things that I like.
"Mysteries. They're good for your heart."
A fun review as always :D seems like a really fun game, too :)! Thank you for the review
6:48 Thanks, that's my new desktop wallpaper.😁
I'm loving this experimental stuff you're doing! Don't stop
Desoigned 😂
maybe a wee bit too many of ginger ale there :D
I got my Kickstarter edition of this the other week and now this review makes me very keen to get it on the table.
"Nobody likes Star Realms. But I do!" My brain broke.
Yes, it it make a great unauthorized expansion without expansion rules, to the Star Wars Deckbuilding Game. The Explorer card make for an interesting alternative option to the Outer Rim Pilot.
I was shocked to discover there’s anyone who doesn’t like Star Realms! It is nice.
Star Realms rules.
I adore Star Realms too. There are dozens of us!
I find myself confused on whether there are really so many people in the comments here who honestly don't realize it's obviously a very obvious joke, or if it's that everyone is just jumping in on the joke playing it straight and it's me who misses that part.
I learned a lot about designing the player experience of my own little space-based card game idea from this review. Also learned that this game is so sleek-looking I’m consumed by feelings of inadequacy. Well, ad astra per aspera and all that-I’ll have to keep working on upping my game (literally).
The first game I thought of similar to this, especially hearing the 2-player rules, was Among the Stars. The variant 2-player rules in that game are the same, drawing an extra card and discarding one.
Tom is wrong. Star Realms is fantastic.
Played this on Tuesday. Fantastic drafting game
AYYY another Star Realms fan!! There are dozens of us!!
Eyy; "Moon" reference, good flick
There is a Tie-Fighter hidden on the Box! Cool!😀
Would you like to know what's good for my heart? More videos featuring Matt. ❤❤❤
I like to track the point at which the "Like" is earned.
Here, it was: "Yes. Games."
I do love Star Realms too. I played it last week! Moon looks great, thanks for sharing.
OI OI !!! Star Realms is a great two player that got me into this hobby ... !! Although , when talking big in small , maybe a Race for the Galaxy sounds like a better fit. God i wish they just upgraded RFTG into something more evolved like this.
I've been waiting years for this series of games to come down in price. The only obstacle to me trying it has been that it's literally double the price of similar games.
The title of the video made a very disturbing memory creep into my mind along with a theme song...
quick googling and I found "we like the moon"
thanks for the earworm for the next weeks..
also:
Those are some adorably neat rover tokens!!
I also love Star Realms. Surprised you didn't mention Tiny Epic Galaxies as another small box space game.
Thanks for this informative and amusing review!
Re: Race for the Galaxy... gonna also pitch Jump Drive for a streamlined RtfG that can play even faster and still maintains the card interaction feel.
Jump Drive is brilliant! It's so quick and easy to explain. :)
I came here to say much the same thing! The barrier for entry for this compared with RFTG is so much lower, and it plays so, so fast
I’m here to say I love Star Realms
I love Star Realms, and I will die on that hill with Matt.
Props for the Moon movie reference.
Good luck with the exploration.
That sounds interesting.
Got my copy today and we love playing it, highly recommend! Just a FYI the game I got delivered by Amazon did not include the nice labeled organizational boxes, the tokens were cardboard, and the rovers weren’t decorated :( just plain and grey.
I love Star Realms. I can't really understand what people don't enjoy about it besides the card market being random. In my opinion, the random market prevents you from always doing the same build over and over and encourages you to counter-build your opponent's picks. It's gold.
Jump Drive and Star Wars The Deckbuilding Game are two great little spacey card games I've been enjoying the past few weeks! Non space card games include Mind Bug and Radlands.
"Turns turns turns"
What about second breakfast?
You know what Tom, I like Star Realms too. It's fun and easy to teach. It's not as good as RftG but's it's also easier to teach so take that.
Cause it is close to us!
But not as much as a spoon!
Star Realms and Beyond the Sun are great. This game didn’t look like one for me, but I can see why people might enjoy it.
The advantage of 1/3 tokens is that the operations always stay the same and simple when adding scores.
Increase score by: you either add a 1 or remove a 1 and flip a token:
0->1, add 1
1->2: add 1
2->3 remove 1 of the 2 and flip the other.
Same for everything up to 10, just with 1 or 2 more 3 tokens.
Increase score by 2: either add 2 or flip a token
0->2 add 2
1->3 flip the 1
2->4 flip 1 of the 1's
Increase by 3, just add a 3
Increase by 4 or more, same as above 3 steps, but add the required amount of 3's.
Also Star Realms is great!
I got this on KS, haven’t managed to table it yet. Spaaaaaaaace Haakon
My partner and I just played this game for the first time. We both loved it, but both agreed that the tokens were the worst part. Flipping them over accidentally happened a lot. I hope this is fixed soon
We are currently developing a hotfix for the game that should be released within the span of the upcoming week. Once it is out, you will stop flipping the heart tokens with your clumsy little fingers.
Nice reference to the movie at the end of the video.
... though also a spoiler.
7 wonders-ish in space
Fun game. The heart point tokens are def a problem though.
Tom is wrong, Star Realms is very good. In particular I really like playing 2 player with the Colony Wars deck.
one hearth token and a card tracker for each player sounds like a reasonable design to fix the problem and text really needs to be a bit bigger... coz i'm really feeling that concern. I hope the company is listening coz it looks amazing :)
Company is listening!
Great video
Got this for Christmas. Its a really great game but totally agree about the hearts: it confuses the hell out of me to work out how to use them (and I have a maths degree!!) 😂
the waterfowl are honking
A rathergood reference?? :D
"We like the moon!!!
Coz it is very close to us!
we like the mooooon!
but not as much as a spoon
coz that's more use for eating soup!"
Nice MOON (the 2009 film) joke at the end there.
Great review, but plant advice, get a moss pole for your monstera to climb!
Loved 7 Wonders half to death, does this fill a similar drafting closed set niche in SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE?
I like star realms, too 😂😂
Love a good token, and a moon.
I love Matthew Lees 🥺
Screw Tom! I LOVE Star Realms!!!!
I get that reference!
This sounds kinda like Glory to Rome, but in space
Rover mechanic reminds me of Villages of Valeria. I sold my deluxe Kickstarter copy and have regretted it ever since. :(
It shone, pale as bone
As I stood there alone
And I thought to myself how the moon,
That night, cast its light
On my heart's true delight,
And the reef where her body was strewn.
Star Realms is an excellent game! Fun and easy to play.
Got my kickstarter deluxe copy yesterday. Have not opened the box yet but the dual sided tokens is really a good idea on paper but the chances that they will get flipped during game and you have no clue if the scores are right or if you have the right ammount of resources are way to high.
Quite often players "play" with their tokens during gameplay in games. Unconsciously or not. People (me included) just like to have things to fiddle with it seems. =)
Got this kickstarter but not had chance to play it yet.
I have the KS edition, and I think its worth mentioning, that I believe the wooden tokens are KS exclusives? I think they are anyway. Also I *think* the odd flippy heart token thing is only on the wooden heart tokens, not the card ones? I might be wrong here as I haven't seen the retail version, but worth a check if/when you find the retail version available. I've only played it a couple of times, but I do enjoy the game a lot. I also love the subtle humour in the cards, and how the game does feel surprisingly thematic given the simplicity of the set up.
This is incorrect. The cardboard tokens are also blank on one side. The same is the case with the resource tokens as well.
Yeah, picked up a "retail" edition at UK games expo. All tokens are thick card rather than painted wood.
And rovers are unpainted too.
the video was perfectly desointed for quality
“I drink your milkshake!!!” ~ Daniel Day Lewis
I played this with my other half. Both had different strategies due to the cards we started with. She romped ahead in early points but then I clawed it back until that first expedition screwed me.
Last 2 cards in the game, neither were great for me so I binned one and drew another. Insanely powerful, but too many resources for me to get and she happened to have them and got the points. Hind sight I should have space binned it and got a pointless resource.
How about The crew for a space theme card game ?:D😅
Sooooo many games have 1 and 3 tokens for the smallest values. Granted most of those don’t flip, but it’s not calculus.
"THAT IS COOL!"
I like Star Realms too!!!!!
💚🤍🧡
that's a rathergood reference.
Lees! I hope you've been well 😊
I love Star Realms, I bought the phone app game for it
This is the kickstarter deluxe edition... normal edition has a lot more cardboard and is a lot less pretty...
BUT NOT AS MUCH AS A SPOOOOON! CAUSE THAT’S MORE USE FOR EATING SOUP!
Bunny dipping?
Rover rollover = rovover. You're welcome.
