Attaching the doorbell to the mount is a little difficult but once it locks into place it seems extremely sturdy. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxHZwMa8CsRjYhf9s4W8w0Dwm47uytWOp I replaced my regular doorbell with this and hard wired it in, using my existing wires and mechanical chime. It works perfect so far and integrates perfectly with my blink camera system. It also works seamlessly with Alexa

I am a retired EE and I found one day on eBay US GE made in US transformer rated at
24V, 40VA for 20.00. I swapped out my old transformer with this one B4 I installed Ring Pro.
Existing mechanical Westminster chime works w./o issue.
Thanks for the vid but what if my old transformer only had 2 wires and the new transformer has 3? I do not see a 3rd (or bare) wire. Can I just tape off the green or 3rd wire and let it hang? I have the black hard wire ring alarm. Thanks
Green is ground, white is neutral and black is hot. If you have no green that means you have no ground. You hypothetically don’t need ground, it’s a safety thing so I guess just tape it off and connect the other ones. Should be alright since that’s how it was before anyway

I live in an older home and the wiring is confusing me. I have a pair of wires at the bell and at the transformer but 3 pairs at the chime! The transformer is in the attic. I think I’m just going re wire the whole thing so that I know what’s there. Thanks so much!
Where is your grounding pigtail for the metal junction box? By code you are required to ground the metal box using a grounding pigtail and green grounding screw tied to the grounding wire of the power supply. If you are going to do an instructional video you should properly wire and ground all connections.

I bought the wired video doorbell, (non-battery version) and the only way it would get enough power from my existing chime was when I put the included jumper on the chime, which then makes my chime not chime.I did buy a replacement transformer, and if I can eventually find the existing transformer, I'd like to hook it up so I can use my existing chime for sound and not have to rely on phone alerts, only.
same problem here, cannot find the transformation at the chime box, must be behind the electrical plastic box which I have to remove...bunch of small wires came off there.
@@jamescc2010 My sister in law found mine, finally. It was inside the front hall coat closet, above the door frame. It was also painted white, so I didn't notice it when I was looking. Painters have a way of painting...everything. However, after upgrading the transformer to a 24v unit, it still wouldn't ring my existing chime. Apparently some of these doorbells still won't do it, even with an upgraded transformer, unless you have the bigger Ring doorbell device that has the battery in it, even tho salespeople at places like Best Buy say these others will work, sigh. But, when I called Ring to sort of complain, they gave me a free upgrade/exchange to the "Doorbell Pro" model, and it works with the existing house chime. I was surprised, but maybe they made the exchange because it was only a few months after I bough the previous model. This Doorbell Pro model doesn't have a battery, and is only a tiny bit bit bigger than the earlier model I had, so it was pretty easy to swap out. A couple things to note. There is a 5 sec delay from the time someone presses the ring button on the device, to when your house chime rings. This is "normal" according to Ring, and it's one of those "you get used to it" kind of things. So, you hear the Ring device go off, and the 5 sec later your internal chime rings. Just glad to be done with the whole dilemma, honestly, but I have to give it up to Ring for making the exchange, AND they even sent a call tag to send the original device back.

How did it work
I bought a hardwired RING basic doorbell for my 82 year-old, mostly deaf, mother, so she would receive visual notification of visitors that would alert her on her cellphone, which is also hooked up to her hearing aids. Because my elderly mother is in a fixed income, and not very technologically proficient, I opted for the most basic, simple, least expensive version that is supposed to replace any existing hardwired doorbell and can be installed by almost anyone with minimal electrical or mechanical skill, like myself. I do have some knowledge about home maintenance and repairs, however-so I first checked the specs on her existing 40 year-old doorbell that worked perfectly since installation long before my family purchased the house- and the specs for the transformer were in line with the requirements for the basic hardwired RING. I even checked the wiring with a voltmeter and the reading confirmed the power was adequate. I then followed the installation instructions meticulously and upon completion the RING doorbell failed to function, supposedly due to inadequate power from the transformer. Tracking down the transformer was more difficult and when I finally located it, in the darkest, most inaccessible creepy old closet in the garage, nestled among 50-year-old cobwebs and God knows how many spider carcasses, not to mention the still living crawling things that probably reside there, I had to throw in the towel. I’m handy, but fuck spiders in my hair- and I don’t give up easily so this was a moment of great frustration for me. Dejected and angry, I uninstalled the RING, defeated, and reinstalled the old doorbell. At this point I had already drilled holes in the brick to mount the new button, which was larger than the old one so the old holes were hidden behind hit- to do this I had to purchase a masonry bit for my drill- needless to say I was EXTREMELY unhappy having to mount the old button, leaving the two new holes visible. My mother’s home, while old, is very nice-she keeps things very neat and tidy and while two small screw holes may not seem like a big deal to most, my mom HATES flaws like that. Still, I carefully rewired the old button and securely mounted it to its original 40 year location only to discover- IT NO LONGER WORKED!!! After 40+ years of flawless operation!!!! I was already wary of RING because the wiring instructions intentionally bypassed the chime, so that by installing the RING, you lost the regular chime function of the existing doorbell- of course, in order to retain regular doorbell function RING required an upgrade to the next model, which was 2.5 times the cost of the basic. This, I felt, was an underhanded, intentional effort to force customers to purchase the more expensive model by purposely configuring their product in a way that unnecessarily disconnected the existing doorbell chime. So when I found my old doorbell suddenly broken after attempting to install the RING, I researched the basic model online and found, unsurprisingly, that countless other customers all experienced the same issue, regardless of the type, model, manufacturer, age or configuration of their existing and previously functional doorbell. When I contacted RING I was told they would be happy to “fix” the problem their product caused by replacing my transformer for “free” IF I upgraded to their model that cost 2.5 times more than the basic version. WHAT A COMPLETE SCAM. That fraudulent, unscrupulous company is selling thousands of unsuspecting customers a product that will damage their personal property, thereby forcing them into spending more than double their original investment or else the customer, while they may be refunded, will no longer have a functional doorbell and face a much more difficult and expensive repair as a result. For many people, especially senior citizens like my 82 year old mother, who are concerned about home safety and want a video doorbell for personal security, but who may also be living in a fixed income, attempting the very simple RING basic installation is already a challenge, so to then be confronted with a transformer malfunction or more complex electrical wiring issue, they are totally out of their depth and stuck with no doorbell at all or forced to purchase a RING PRO, that they cannot afford and may not even be able to operate or understand. FURTHERMORE, after the RING BASIC damages their existing transformer, the installation of another wired doorbell, the installation of the RING PRO doorbell or even the repair/replacement of their now faulty transformer will doubtless require they acquire the assistance of someone with some level of technical knowledge or professional experience to locate the old transformer and solve the problem. What if the transformer is in the crawl space??? How the hell could my 82-year-old mother ever resolve the problem caused by the CROOKS AT RING, without paying somebody??? Now, I know I can go buy a transformer and face my fear of spiders and swap it out, but that will set me back at least $30 and an hour or two of my time, not to mention subject me to extreme emotional angst, when prior to making the mistake of assuming a company as well-known and heavily promoted as RING would be peddling a decent product that functioned as promised and treat customers fairly, my mother had a perfectly good, functional, reliable doorbell that never gave her any problems.
If there is any advice you can offer me, regarding my current dilemma after I GOT TOTALLY DEFRAUDED, CHEATED, SCAMMED, AND RIPPED OFF BY THE SCANDALOUS, UNETHICAL THIEVING CORPORATE CRIMINALS AT RING, WHO CON TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS AND CHEAT AND LIE FOR PROFIT, I would be very grateful. As of right now, I plan to install a motion activated camera that has nothing to do with the now broken doorbell, and with a gun to my head I will force myself to install a new wired doorbell and transformer- troubleshooting the old bell and transformer seems daunting and like it may lengthen the amount of time I have to spend in the creepy, dark, dirty cabinet in the garage with the 50 year old spider nest.

Is the jumper wire included in ring box not needed? (I can't access any wires on front of chime, it's really old)
Ok so I appreciate the Video but I do have a question on the wiring I see you have a white wire running from the ring to the front of the chime or door bell and have one running from transformer to the transformer side of chime or doorbell will I have to run a wire there like that or is that just for demo cause I see the ring kit comes with a black wire they say to wire into the front and transformer spot of the chime or door bell box please correct me if I’m wrong cause I have already burnt up one transformer and don’t wanna do it again. That would be best practice, yes. I assume this guys isn't really electrically trained as his work is somewhat sloppy.
Those wire nuts could potentially come off the live, then make contact with the casing and make your casing live. I'd avoid using them also.
@@TigerFont5 my transformer is in a plastic box in the wall, behind the doorbell. The old transformer only had 2 wires (black and white) that connected the old transformer the simple doorbell but the new has 3 (white, black, green). What should I do with the green wire from the transformer ? Thanks

Great video! I measured the voltage at my current bell button as 18V. Should I be OK from an amperage standpoint? Also, there is an unused green wire at my current button. Does that get used by Ring?

In many cases no. But if you're not getting enough power you might need to.
Do I need the doorbell Chime? How would I do it without the doorbell chime. Would I just connect the white wire directly to the doorbell?

Thanks for the video, very helpful. I have an issue though. My new transformer comes with all 3 wires, but apparently the older transformer didn't require a ground (green) wire. Can I just leave the new transformer ground wire loose?

I bought a new transformer, I have a ring doorbell. I went up into the attic and there are three cables ran. I only have one doorbell (front door). I’m not sure which cable is which or if I even need them all. When I push my ring doorbell, only my ring chimes sound off, not the chime that was built with the house. I’m going nuts.

Did you find it? No transformer at the chime box, checked a few spots in the condo but still could not find it. Maybe we have to tap into power source at the chime box location and put a new transformer there hopefully connects back to the doorbell.

Why are doorbell design so inconvenient? You have to install a new power line for the transformer or pull a long ass wire all the way to the power box in the basement. Why not just plug into the wall outlet near the entrance and the button plug into the chime. I don't mind having a long wire between the chime and the button. I know where are some that plug into wall outlets, but not as common as these.
