    I used a 16v 30VA Transformer for my Arlo doorbell cam. And works great. Unfortunately I had a dilemma with Arlo using their voltage regulator that came with the doorbell kit. That thing kept blowing the transformers, I went through 4 of them. Even ran new wiring, still kept blowing. So, I tried without it, and it was working fine. The setup instructions said to install that voltage regulator, well in my case, that's a hell no!!

    Excellent, excellent description & walk-through! Thank you for the suggestion on the transformer with "taps" -- I was going to get one via your website but it's sold-out. I would also keep the output at 16VAC as our chimes are spec'd at 16V.

    When hardwiring a “ring” doorbell the low voltage from the transformer is only for trickle charging the battery. It does not use the low voltage power to operate the units functions.

      The Ring Pro doesn’t have a battery and you need to use a 16V 30 VA or 20 volt, 20 VA transformer for it to also ring the home’s doorbell when the button is pushed.

    After all these years, volt amps=watts. Of course. Never thought it through, but now I wonder why it just not listed as watts. May be trivial, but now I"m wondering if a lower gage wire might be in order. Excellent video.

      No, lower gauge wire restricts the flow of electricity, never a good idea unless your making a toaster. Restrict electricity and you’ll make heat.

    A 16V 30VA transformer is plenty for video doorbells, the 24V 48VA transformer shown is overkill, has more confusing wires, and when wired for 16V only produces 32VA anyway (2 amp current limit). Just buy the Ring branded 16V 30VA transformer and make your life easier.

    Is it possible to piggyback from a wall outlet/receptacle by using pigtails? I have a similar light to the one you're using here to demonstrate, but ours have the wall on/off switch, so I don't think the same application is going to work for us. However, we do have a 15amp receptacle, breaker at the main panel, that's near where we want the doorbell camera installed. Thank you for all you do.

    My transfer is also connected into the light just as in the video. Just as the in the video, I have two black wires connected to the transformer. I'm not sure where those two black wires would connect to? If it the 16va wires that are labeled as such on the transformer and does it matter which black wire go to what? I understand the wiring from the doorbell on the outside of the transformer, just not inside the guts where I have just the two black wires.

      There is no polarity to the 110v side of some transformers. So one wire goes black to black and the other goes black to white. I wish they make one of the power wires white to make it easier to homeowners.

      This is an old video, when they first came out they were to run on a 16 V transformer which is the old doorbell transformer. I found my old transformer was only 8 volts, so I upgraded to a 24v 40 watt transformer (wall wart style). I still can't get my mechanical doorbell chime to ring. The chime for the back door still works fine, but not the front door. The Nest doorbell works otherwise. My front door is about 15' away from the doorbell chime unit, so maybe it's not getting the signal? There is nothing physically blocking the chime from operating either. I even bought a 16v transformer, but that didn't help. I have read that some chimes just aren't compatible. Mine is about 10 years old, but maybe that's the issue, we'll see

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  2 роки тому

      Very hot and a smell means there’s a short in the wiring. Or a defective transformer. Connect the transformer to the power but don’t connect the low voltage wires and see if it gets hot then. If so Disconnect immediately. Somewhere along the line one of your wires must be shorted out to another and the only way to do that is the hard way, follow the wires all the way.

    • @miniteeg
      @miniteeg 2 роки тому

      @Mr. Hardware it looks like the short circuit is on the ring itself as the 2 wires connected to the terminals get warm immediately. This must have happened when I first connected the Ring directly to the wall wires that were connected to the stock doorbell without connecting the transformer first. This lasted for few seconds but was probably enough to make a short on the Ring board. Luckily it works with the battery power. I will try to find someone who can dismantle the Ring device and check it out.

      First off it must remain accessible. So it cannot be closed in a wall. They get hot so I always leave them on a metal box and away from combustibles.

    I’m trying to power three separate Lorex video doorbells and a mechanical chime. There’s not enough juice to power more than one doorbell at a time with the 24VAC 40vA transformer I had purchased. Now the challenge is to figure out if u need three separate transformers or not. I had planned to connect my main entry door to the “front” chime terminal and the other two doorbells to the “rear” chime terminal so I know which doors are being pressed audibly when I don’t have my phone on me. Anyone have advice for me on working these three doorbells with plenty of juice to keep them running and to operate with the mechanical chime aswell?

    What is the wire gauge that goes from the transformer to the ring bell camera?

      What Blair said... also, I think the doorbell companies don't tell you to add the power requirements of your chime (while chiming) to the power requirements of the "smart" doorbell (while streaming hi-def video and two way audio)... that kicks it up a bit, and most household transformers can't keep up. I would even doubt a 30VA, depending on the chime and the doorbell combination. These smart doorbells can be touchy when the voltage dips below 16V for even a moment. Which will happen on a transformer that is getting close to max (ie. Amp draw is too high). This video is right, I would rather try to keep the voltage near the recommended range instead of using a 24V to cover the difference. Even if the doorbell says it can handle 24V... a new 24V transformer puts out more than 24V... so thats risky.... same issue with the chime. So more VA (instead of more V) to cover the combined loads, plus a healthy bit extra.

    Attaching the doorbell to the mount is a little difficult but once it locks into place it seems extremely sturdy. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxHZwMa8CsRjYhf9s4W8w0Dwm47uytWOp I replaced my regular doorbell with this and hard wired it in, using my existing wires and mechanical chime. It works perfect so far and integrates perfectly with my blink camera system. It also works seamlessly with Alexa
