Way better help than when I contacted Ring support! Thank you for your clear cut video😉
Glad it helped!
We had to replace the transformer which was in the garage and the doorbell system. Lowe’s had all pieces we needed in one box. Ring doorbell now works as it is supposed to. Thanks for the video.
I'm glad you clarified in this video that if the RIng doorbell is hooked to your old doorbell, you won't need to keep removing it to charge it. I watched your previous Ring video yesterday, and thought I heard you say something about charging the Ring. I've was looking for further clarification, when I found this video of yours. Thank you!
Thank you so much! My issue was the screws preventing the ring from touching the charging pad thing. It was driving me nuts. Very helpful!
Thats exactly my problem too.
Sir thank you so much for the very clear clarification! so many freaking ppl and posts in the Internet and no one could just say you don't need to recharge the battery if it's already hardwired!
Right!!! My condo builders installed ours with the wires connected to the actual device instead of the wall mount (wrong). I just spent an hour trying to figure out how I'm supposed to charge it. Thank god for this video.

Excellent. Really like the way you communicate everything.
That is great to hear! Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you so so much! No one else had this information online. The screws were not tight enough and so the connection was not good enough. All I had to do was tighten the screws so the ring fit flush with the bracket. So simple!
Thanks so much some good information for me to look at. My Mothers Ring is hooked up to the doorbell but its losing power and it shouldn't be so now I have some things to check.
This video was helpful. I recently noticed my Ring battery going below 90% and not recharging for the last few of days. I didn't think anything of it because the bell was still ringing inside my home. So figured I just need to recheck the fuse and bell wiring. Then, when you mentioned something about hitting wires behind the wall, I remembered I recently installed a floating shelf and had issues with 1 of the screws not going through the wall so I used a shorter screw. Since that wall is a few feet away, I didn't think it was possible for that to be the cause. But, I just loosened those screws and the doorbell switched back to hardwired from battery mode. 🤦🏾♀️ Sometimes it's the simple things. I never would've tried that if I didn't watch your video. Thankfully, it wasn't damaged to the point of someone having to go behind the wall to fix it.
Very helpful , couldn’t figure it out , but needed to make sure there TIGHTLY and neatly pushed in for it to wokr
Great fix it video. Miss seeing u weekly.
Thanks, Cheryl. I miss the live videos too. I will bring them back sometime in the future!
This is some great info. Now I have to watch your install. I use the battery. Needs charging way too often. I'm gonna check to see if I have door bell wiring
Thanka for checking it out!
Thank you for responding with your comment. I was thinking of installing one or two in different areas and rely on the battery. How often did you find yourself charging it?

Very helpful and thorough. Making my wife go step by step haha. Thank you!
Good video, my hardwired version suddenly just died with no response. First and easiest thing to do is go and unscrew the doorbell and see if you got voltage across the terminals and/or do the jumper trick shown in the video. If no power then go back and look at the other items described (breaker panel, transformer etc.) For mine I showed good voltage and got the chime to work. Ended up power cycling mine which did the trick.
Thanks for putting up this video. Called ring tech support and couldn't get the problem across to the "tech". In some other country. I couldn't understand her at all... I think my connection is the problem. Will check it out in the light tomorrow...
Great stuff! Nothing like this on the Ring Website. Previous HO botched the install I think. I have power from the transformer; nice tip on arcing the wires so to speak. It saved me the hassle of getting a doorbell to test. There is also speculation that the transformer might not be powerful enough to run it.
This was so helpful. I went through all the steps and it’s my Ring that isn’t working… doorbell wiring is fine. But it’s a first gen, so the last few minutes of your video don’t help with it :( but at least I’ve narrowed it down! It doesn’t have a separate plate like your version. I think I’m going to have to take apart my ring itself to find out what’s disconnected inside.
Very helpful door bell stop charging, no longer a problem Thanks
Yep, the terminals on the back was loppy and unscrewing them a little cased it to register as hardwired!!!! Ty
This was great troubleshooting which helped me a lot!
Awesome to hear! Happy to help!
I’ve seen other videos where they mention that the transformer may not be providing enough power, requiring an upgrade. have you run into that issue?
How do I know which wire gets connected to which screw
I tried one way, then opened ring app - settings- battery or tap on battery icon, top right hand side, it will display battery %, also it will say, if hard wired, solar or battery powered, if it says battery, then it's not getting power from wires, reverse the connection, left right or right left, go back to the app, back out of settings, go back into settings battery etc, it should then say hard wired. If it's the correct connection. Yes back n fourth trial n error.
Thanks so much! I was able to fix our hardwiring issue. One thing to note is that the app doesn't update the battery source very quickly. It kept saying battery but since I knew the connection was being made because the inside doorbell was working again, I just left it alone and checked back about 5 minutes later and the source had updated to hardwired.
Awesome to hear! Happy I could help!
My Ring battery started going down but turns out that the screws were a little loose. A little tightening and making them even and now it's hardwired again. Excellent troubleshooting.
None of this worked for me but it was a good video. My doorbell worked before I tried to set my ring up. Now i have no power
Excellent video Thanks so much
Good information, but my question is: Why do you have a Ring doorbell only on your backdoor and not the front door as well?
yes its my first time and i think you helped out a lot and I'm going to try your tips and see if it works and let you know thanks again. sm
Awesome video! Thumbs up to you sir!!
You were right, ring is dead - i did the test the wires thing by crossing wires (uh, i mean by borrowing a neighbors doorbell, of course :) - doorbell works, is the wired Ring thats dead) ....thanks man, great step through of possible issues.
only few years old, might try another brand feel like it should've lasted longer.
Wasn't powering on for me. Drove me nuts because previous doorbell worked. Turns out the wires were old and I broke one while undoing the old doorbell so just had to cut and strip it. Good luck out there peoples!
Great video! Thank you.
Thank u lol I've been tryna figure out if I should hook it up or not lol or if I'd have to still charge it
The Ring troubleshooting site said that wired in Ring doorbell batteries could still lose a charge if there is excessive motion at your door meaning it is turning on more often, OR if the temperatures are really low for awhile that could drain the battery. It is a pain to have to unhook the wiring in order to charge the battery.
I find this device to be poor in both engineering and execution. Ring know a doorbell will be outside and subject to low temperature, so there's that. Hate having to take the device off to manually charge. Power supplied is fine.
Just got the ring 4, i had to enable the indoor chime in the app. Had me stumped.
thanks, this fixed my problem.
Thank you for the information. How about if the Ring is working, but not always picking up whoever is at the door? My power says "good".
Thanks, I think the problem was the existing transformer. I finally found it behind the central heating/air unit. If replacing it doesn't work, then guess I'll just call an electrician because I am like so done with this "easy DIY install"
So, our ring doorbell is hardwired to the house and has been going strong since 2019 then all of a sudden it shut down. Can not get it to power up. So frustrating. I’m guessing we just need a new ring doorbell device. I cannot find the powersource in the breaker boxes in the garage (nothing labeled doorbell) tried nearby sources (lights) still nothing.
Going to take a part and touch the wires together and see if they have power, or use one of my Dad’s tools that shows power by lighting up if has electricity in it.
Giving it a go, y’all! Wish me luck! Hope I don’t wind up bumped into next week! 😂
Great video! Thank you
Your video is so clear....... love it... what type phone do you have, or camera ?
Thanks, Mary! I use a go pro hero 8 for all my videos right now. Thanks for the comment!
Do the light on the ring should be on (flashing) at all times?
I have 2 ring doorbells version 3. Both have a Transformer hardwired to it and both eventually lose all charge. I want to say it's slower with the transformers connected. I'm gonna reverse the polarity on the screws in the back to see if it helps if not I assume the transformers are to weak.
Thanks! When I first installed my doorbell I didn’t like both chimes ringing so I disconnected one of the wires in the old school wall mounted chime box inside the house. I thought I just disconnected the chime when in fact I broke the circuit that was supposed to charge the battery. I reconnected the wire and now in device health it says hardwired. Thank you for the help. Any idea how to turn off the wall chime and only have the Ring chime?
I have same video doorbell connection as yours , I need to remove it charge battery every couple of months, it’s ring doorbell 2nd generation, anyway it can charge without removing doorbell?
The gap issue, is that particular Ring doorbell waterproof. It seems like during heavy windy rain water can seep between those cracks?
Fabulous 🎉. So 2020!
@5:33 if you don’t have a doorbell, a test light would work too (if you have a test light)
@The Fixer Lol. Have a Nice Day!
Found problem the battery terminals at the top corrosion it may look ok but scratch them each one 5 put back in mine worked hope this helps
Can you check if your battery is being charged by the hardwire without using wifi?
We had a neighborhood power outage 2 days ago and thats when it started telling me low battery! Ive had it 2 months and never had to charge it cuz its hardwired. Im not sure whats going on
Nice video and very helpful
Awesome to hear! Thank you!
Hi if I don't have voltage coming from the doorbell wires does it mean the doorbell transformer is no good? The transformer feels warm and I also checked my circuit breaker and they are all on
I have to keep charging my batter every 2-3 weeks. At my other house I never had to charge it. My new house I think it has the digital chime door bell so I install the little resistor loop doodad. Battery is at 52% right now. I just removed the resistor doodad and I'm waiting to see if the battery 52% increases. If the battery doesn't start charging I will know the battery has finally reached it life span. I think I bought the Ring Doorbell 2 about 4 or 5 years ago.
Please let me know if the battery charge is fixed after installing the resistor loop diode?
You can use wires to bridge the connections to ring the doorbell
Thanks so much this video helped a lot!
I was wondering why when the milk man comes or even delivery people it some time does not let us know
@@larryhalverson1757 they are trained Ninjas.
It's nice your transformer is so convenient
Great video but it doesn't help with my situation. The old bell works and rings the chime but my Ring doorbell doesn't sound the chime and doesn't charge. I have absolutely exhausted myself trying to figure it out. I thought this would be a simple install 🙈
It is very simple, change the transformer for a 24 v . they sell it on amazon. and in the configuration of your doorbell, activate the existing doorbell sound and that's all.
I have a standard Ring doorbell my wires from the wall screw directly into the Ring device. My doorbell works fine, was working before I installed the Ring doorbell. I removed the Ring and reinstalled my standard doorbell button works fine.
The Ring Device is just not getting power.
Hey, Jim! Did you give the Ring an initial charge? It might need to be charged up before you connect it.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair yes I let it fully charge before installing. My Ring device came with two wire extensions. I may try to solder those on to see if it will improve the contacts on the ring device.
The video was helpful, so thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, I have a different problem from those you identified in the video. I'm installing a Ring Doorbell 3 in place of the doorbell/intercom at my front door and haven't gotten power to work. After trying a few of your suggestions to isolate the problem (none of which worked), I connected the Ring Doorbell 3 directly to the transformer (plug in wall kind that provides power to intercom/doorbell system) and THAT worked. I suspect that the 25 year old low voltage wiring in my house works for the old doorbell, but the power through it drops off enough that it won't power the Ring Doorbell. Or, perhaps I need to do something else since there's three intercom units on the same circuit? Any suggestions?
RIP. Did you figure it out?
Only the ring elite supports intercom doorbells(late reply) because other doorbell take 8-24 AC the ring elite use Poe(power over ethernet) to power the doorbell and it takes any doorbell wiring because of it getting power from ethernet, intercom doorbell are DC
Good video. I installed the 1st generation RING, It does not chime inside the house. I did exactly what you did on your video. Any suggestions how to fix it?
Same problem here. It rings directly to my phone which is my personal preference. But recently it went dead.
You can change this via device settings and add a charm or something and that will make your usual indoor bell ring also
Can you do a video using a digital voltage meter ?
Love this video!, Always helpful
I have an Arlo doorbell, I’m here out of desperation. I don’t have a chime box so I’m using a power adapter, we tested the voltage and it’s good, the doorbell should be getting power to it but it won’t turn on at all. I can’t find anything about it on the internet. No one else has had this problem. It’s so frustrating!
I have 20v from the old doorbell. I tried to tone the doorbell but it never connected across even when holding down the ring button. Is this common? It also did not charge while mounted and hardwired. I do not have a torque driver or I would open it and look inside.
so i recently hooked my ring doorbell up. (ring doorbell 2 2020 model) everything works but it doesnt say hardwired on the app. the chims inside the house works but its just not recieving power to keep it constantly charged. my old doorbell had a light. that lit up. the chime inside worked. any tips or fixes
I am having the same issue with the same ring doorbell model. Did you ever find a solution? My doorbell is hardwired but it says the battery status is 1% and is no longer detecting motion nor sending me notifications. Thanks
Mine is doing the same thing. I don't want to have to keep taking it on and off to charge it all the time. I know it's been below zero here but I still thought as long as it's hard wired I wouldn't need to charge it. The battery only lasted a week after I first initially charged it and then installed it to the hardwire. Very frustrating!! Any suggestions?
@@adventurenow6264 After more research and a few youtube videos later, I found the issue lies within the doorbell transformer. Standard transformers are 8V-16V (just enough to power a standard push button doorbell). My old one stated 16V-10VA on it. I found a replacement one (16V-30VA) at Home Depot for $20, installed, and no problems since!
www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-16VAC-30VA-Transformer-Compatible-with-All-Video-Door-Bells-HB-130-03/309792479
I have 2nd generation ring bell, and it only works when the charger is plugged in :/ but as soon as I take it out, it don’t wanna work. So now we have to have a new one sent out to us. It’s so frustrating. Any ideas on what the problem may be?
did u figure what was wrong mine is doing the same and idk what to do
I have the Ring 2020 Release. Wired to existing doorbell. Door bell rings but light on doorbell (the round circle) is not lit. Also under device health it says "hardwired" and status as 96%. Any ideas as to whats going on? Thanks.
Mine stop drawing power from hardwire but now I have the ring doorbell 2
Do I need a 30VA transformer? I just put one in and now I’m thinking 24VA isn’t enough power for a long length of wire (maybe 100-150 ft)
A question that seems to be skirted. Can the Ring Doorbell work without a good battery?
I have had my Ring Doorbell for several years now and just recently started having issues. Chimes ring fine but the Ring Doorbell and camera are not working and device shows offline in the ring app. Device Health shows battery at 3%. I believe the battery may be bad and no longer taking a charge. That is how the Ring Doorbell works right? The power keeps the battery charged but the Ring camera and WiFi connection actually work off the battery. So if the battery goes bad then the device won't work. Is that correct?
If you have lithium batteries or a hardwired with battery unit (2nd generation) it doesn’t work at -20c or -4 F.
They do not like cold.
I forgot to turn the power off from the circuit I uninstall it and now I’m hearing noise coming from the box inside of the house. What should I do
Ahhhhhhh contacts!
i like your house
I will try your trouble shooting methods. I do have a question. I have two wires per screw connected to the transformer for a total of four wires. What could the extra wires be for? There are two wires connected to the ring itself. One per screw. The ring has power, but it is not charging. It is an older ring.
Did you get an answer because I’m also having this issue. I’ve just had to bring it in to charge it as it went down to 4% as it’s not charging even thou it’s been hard wired on
@@trinasmith6391 No I did not. I just decided to replace the ring which belongs to my sister. We installed it 10/17.22. I am hoping it holds a charge. Details to follow.
My doorbell was at 58 percent today and it's hardwired and tonight it's 50 percent how did it lose battery what's did I do wrong
Low voltage wiring can’t charge as fast as the door bell uses the power. It still works off the battery and when not in use it slow charges.
You can try reducing the sensitivity if the camera is in a busy area. Or create zones that trigger the recording.
Good video but it is a little confusing when you call everything a doorbell. The indoor unit that rings is called your CHIME SET not the doorbell. Plus I would have added a point to point wiring diagram from the breaker to the xformer and to the chime set and the the doorbell button.
Some folks need a wiring diagram that has never had a doorbell.
Don’t take it to heart I’m just an old electrician trying to help. Thanks buddy, good job.
Thanks for the feedback and info, John. I appreciate it!
Do all doorbells have a fuse?
My ring has power, hard wired in, works when pushed, live feed works BUT the white light around button is no longer lit
I have power to the door bell but the Ring fails the power step during insulation.
Me too
I have voltage across the wires coming to the doorbell, have replaced the transformer and tested the voltage there and that is good and also replaced the door chime and see voltage across the wires leading to the chime. My Ring door bell still does not get powered? What could be wrong?
Hey, kumar. Unfortunately some chimes are not compatible with the ring doorbell. I think there is a list on their website. Hope this helps.
2 door bells!
What would you suggest If the button gets pressed and the shite light circle does not come on ?
White light even.
I have 4 wires coming out the wall to the doorbell chime why is that?
I don't have power status. Only status under network.
Ok. My Ring is at 11% but the app says it's hardwired. I cant wait to get home to check these screws. My regular doorbell should be ringing too. Thanks. Now come on 5 o'clock
Please I’ve same problem, did you found the solution for charging the battery?
@@ahmadhussein909 it was not making contact with the doorbell yes I fixed it
Tried everything ring camera still does not ring bell. Do you have anymore ideas?
My door bell works just fine. But when ring is installed it doesn’t work
My wires in the wire nut, within the chime, are setting of the chime at rapid fire. I am not reading any voltage running through the wires to the doorbell switch.
The problem is both wires going to your button are hot wires and usually there is no neutral wire to measure the voltage. The doorbell button acts just like a light switch. A hot wire coming in and and hot wire going out when the button is pressed. You can’t get the correct voltage across those two wires because in effect all they do make and break the circuit when the button is pressed it completes the circuit and the chime set will sound. When you let go of the button the circuit opens and the chime set will stop sounding.
My ring bell 3 stays solid white on the ring but battery percent is coming down
Mine is working wired but won't charge while wired but will charge on USB. Any ideas please?
What screw driver? Ring says T15 but it is not working.
Hey, Syd! I think it is probably not working because it is a "safety screw". The screw has a post in the middle of the star that prevents a regular T15 to work. I am guessing for theft prevention. Hope this helps. Thanks for checking out the video!
Привет дружище привет доброго времени суток 👏✌️💪✊👍😘💎💟🔥
My chime inside wasn't ringing and I called Ring because my electrician said that the Ring Doorbell that I bought was defective. The Ring technician (via phone) said that I had to manually go to the app and chose the option for my existing doorbell chime to ring when Ring doorbell is pushed. However, the electrician tried s Ring Doorbell Pro that he had and it worked perfectly fine. I adjusted the settings in the app, but haven't been able to test it out because the electrician left. Anyone else fix the problem this way?
Mine is hardwired but i still need to charge it. now once i charge it the light ring will not light up how frustrating
Is it possible that the transformer is experiencing degraded output and all the steps you’ve done would show that you have power, just not enough?
That is a good question. I suppose it is possible but haven't heard of it happening.
Not trolling, just thinking of possible causes. Great video as always my friend.
@@ID10TDriving yeah i think it could be possible, just cant say for sure. thanks, Mike!!
Do you have to hard wire it in for it to work?
Hey, Phil! No you don't have to. You will just have to remove it every once in a while to charge it if you don't hardwire it. Thanks for the comment!
😁👍
