In this video we teach you how to wire a doorbell transformer. This will work to wire doorbell transformers for both the Ring Doorbells and Nest Hello Doorbells. The Doorbell transformer link we have listed above has enough power for both Ring and Nest Hello video doorbells.
Many people need to either replace or add a doorbell transformer with more power when upgrading to a smart doorbell.

You are so helpful! Thank you so much for this video. I just need to find that Junction Box.

While the case of the transformer may be grounded (i.e. electrically connected to its green wire) and thus would ground the junction box when the transformer case touches it, best practice would dictate that the incoming ground (green) wire should also be connected to the box itself.

Very true. This is a common and dangerous mistake. A charged box (from loose wire nuts) can easily cause fire.
I would also recommend 3 wire Romex type cable with the unsheathed / bare copper ground wire over cables with sheathed wire. This is for 2 reasons.
!. Should the wire be damaged (future reno/diy project) anywhere along it's length from the breaker to the outlet, the bare copper would immediately trip the Breaker.
      2. The flat 3 wire Romex Cable has the bare copper in the middle. This creates a groove in the middle where the cable is thinner. This groove makes it very easy to score the cable sheathing with a knife and peel it off. This way, there is minimal risk of damaging the the sheathing on the hot or neutral wires when you are opening up the cable.

Where does the ground wire get connected to from the TF if there's only 2 wires going into the junction box in an old home?

They probably aren’t going to answer this question because it has some pretty serious implications. You’ll want to talk to an electrician. Or do some research on ungrounded electrical systems.

You got some really nice wood flooring in that mechanical room. Nevertheless, lets hope no one accidentally kicks that setup.

Where do you run the low voltage wire that goes from the transformer to the doorbell, because it is on the outside of the junction box?

So just to confirm, more than two same colored wires can be twisted together via wire nut? Like 3 hots, 3 neutrals and 3 grounds? I'm connecting to an existing outlet and wanna make sure I don't overload anything.

In California (2022), all metal junction boxes my just also be grounded. You would also have to connect the two green ground wires to the metal junction box itself with a pigtail and threaded grounding screw ...

My doorbell transformer is behind my doorbell chime and doesn’t have a ground wire and is inside a plastic junction. The new transformer has a ground wire. What do I do with it?

Moving into a new home and there is a visible transformer but no power. Can I just replace that transformer n run a new cable straight to the doorbell ? I am planning to use my google homes as a chime.

Please add link to the plug-in trasformer. Also, are there any cons to doing a plug-in transformer?

Plug in transformer: amzn.to/2W6U5fy . No cons to the plug in transformer. Works just like a hardwired transformer and is easier to DIY install.

Are you putting in smart doorbells or just regular doorbells? With regular doorbells like these: amzn.to/37zOXbs shouldn't be an issue because they are typically only drawing power when the button is pressed (use the unlighted buttons, so they aren't drawing power) so unless someone presses all 3 at once they should function as individual doorbells. Pressing all 3 at once would most likely result in a duller or no doorbell tone and could wear out the transformer sooner. Get a class II rated transformer.
The Ring Doorbell 3: amzn.to/2TkG6SA could operate with 2 doorbells per transformer as it can be hardwired and also has a built in rechargeable battery so it's drawing less power. I don't know if 3 could be on one transformer. I would recommend using a higher voltage 24v transformer: amzn.to/2Tf5N70.
As far as your question goes with how many transformers could you connect at one junction box. It would really depend on local electrical and wiring code . But the junction boxes do have multiple holes where if it was allowed per code they could be connected if the box was large enough, and the wiring was appropriate to make all the connections. 2 wired low voltage plug in transformers like these: amzn.to/2IQmzas get plugged into outlets all time for security systems and other electronics.
Above all comply with local electrical codes, and safety regulations.

I have an Edwards transformer 592 and I see only a red and a greenish white wire probably by old home owner. Red is connected to middle and the greenish white to the right corner and I am assuming it might be 16V 10VA right now. Ring doorbell recommends 16V to 24 V but doesn’t mention VA. To be safe can I hook the middle red wire to left most corner to get 24V 20VA? Please note the marking on 8V/16V/10VA is faded but I can see it’s a 592 and also 24V and 20VA with arrows at the bottom. Also, the transformer is connected to the circuit breaker box. Please confirm?

I have installed TWO transformers for my doorbell. Doorbell doesn’t work and I can’t get any volts on low side of transformer. I checked AC power coming into it but nothing out! Help me please

    • @OneHourSmartHome

Did both transformers burn out? If so you most likely have a short somewhere in your wiring. Or your wiring could be non continuous. If it's a short it could be the doorbell button itself or the chime. Or it could be a nail/screw driven through wiring.

Hi! I installed our doorbell and transformer in 2019 and last week it went out. I tested everything and it turns out the transformer was bad. I picked up a new one and reattached the new one but I had only 4volts at the doorbell and it wouldn’t work. The only issue we had is that my husband took the transformer down last night and I don’t know which wire was connected to which. Both are black and he tested it with the multimeter but we got no power. When I went up to see what was going on I got lower voltage from the transformer (set up for 16) so I was going to switch it to 24 and noticed the transformer was very, very hot. Should it be hot and does that mean that the hot wire was connected to the neutral?

    • @OneHourSmartHome
      @OneHourSmartHome  3 роки тому +1

If it's really hot it means you probably have a short somewhere, which could also be the reason for the the 4 volt reading. A common issue is that the doorbell chime is bad and stuck or shorted, it's easy to replace. Disconnect both wires and see what the reading is on the transformer with nothing connected to check the transformer. The transformer wires are reversible so no issues there. I would then disconnect your doorbell and reconnect the wires to the transformer and take a reading at the doorbell wires. It should be very close to what the the transformer is reading. If it's not you have a short in your wiring or doorbell chime. With the power on touch the two doorbell wires together, if the chime normally and the voltage reading is fine then it's probably an issue with your exterior doorbell. If they don't chime, or it's fuzzy or buzzing it's probably an issue with your doorbell chime and should be replaced.

I recommend this replacement chime: amzn.to/3chzHjL

One Hour Smart Home I was thinking that I should check the chime after watching several more videos. The wires I wasn’t sure if they were reversed was that hot and neutral wire to the back of the transformer because they’re both black! When I swapped it out last time I changed one at a time but this time my husband brought it down and I had forgotten they were black so I wasn’t sure if that was why it was hot but I swapped them and swapped them again and the same exact result. I’m going to disconnect the chime (it hasn’t worked in almost ten years and I’m fine without it) and see what happens. Thank You so much for your quick response. I’m going to try again tomorrow but I think we’ll need help rewriting because those are corners of the attic I’m not interested in exploring, LOL!!
