  • Stihl MS462 vs. MS440 in a head to head chainsaw race. This is one of my all time favorite class of chainsaw. 70cc new school vs. old school, 25" bar and chain. Both saws are very similar in performance and I do think I'd bet the time would be next to identical with muff mod on 440. Maybe another video….

    Both of those saws are awesome! I have a slant fin 044 that I'm chasing an air leak on. I thought it was the impulse line or intake boot so I changed them both but no luck. I even tried a new carb cause I was told the old carbs had main jet problems but it's still reving high on idle. So I'm gonna put new seals and a base gaskets and hope that finally does it .

      Thanks! The slants are super cool! Usually if I’m chasing an air leak I’ll get a vacuum tester on it and use soapy water. Good luck finding it my friend!!!!

    pre- 1995 phase 1 "emission" standards .... the early, stronger 12 mm crank shaft bearing 044 with the "slant fin" cylinder, still pre-emission standard timing and ports, used on the 10 mm 044 was probably the best "old school" base professional level saw. Still has some "bark" and "bite" and only a insufficient bit of excess weight compared to the new offering. I had worn out my little 12 inch bar cheepie saw, knew a bit but never felled a big tree, a neighbor alerted me to the fact that another neighbor had received notice from the city that they had to remove an oak wilt tree. The city would "farm it out" for $1250.00. I offered my neighbor a "cost" price of $400.00. The oak measured 54 inches across at the base. I had some money to spend. I read a bit, shopped around a bit and wound up with some bargains. A new, dusty, 66 inch double ended bar at a dealer "up north" for $100.00. What did I know? THE TREE WAS 54 INCHES ACROSS, a couple of bargain price slant fin 12 mm's that another dealer wanted to sell at a buy both get a deal price and 1/2 the parts for a Grandberg chain saw mill for pennies on the dollar at the "Northern" closeout sale at one location and the other 1/2 of the parts, also for pennies on the dollar, at the nearby "Northern" location sale. How does that happen? I looked for help, a friend of a friend who had tree experience offered to help with the felling for a 12 pack of beer. He did give a few "strange looks" at me and the 2 saw 66 inch bar rig. It took the 2 of us well less than 1 minute total sawing time to cut the wedge and make the back cut. The tree turned out to be hollow with a shell of less than 6 inches max anywhere at the base. I could have felled it alone in a couple of minutes with my old 12 inch saw if I could have got it to run. A big wind storm struck and the city opened up free dumping at their tree disposal site, so much for the branches. The "alerting" neighbor alerted me to the fact that the father of a new neighbor had bought a woodmizer sawmill.
    So that "adventure" began.

    440 needs a dual port muffler atleast to be fair

    • @timberandtools

      This is true, but tbh I think it may have beaten it with a straight shot or dual port on there!

    Been using a 441c for my big firewood saw and on an Alaskan mill for 10 years. Its a bit heavy, but its been a good saw. It was on a shelf in my basement and we got a flash flood and it got submerged. Ive got it to start,but my throttle seems stuck. I think the throttle cable is seized up. Ill tinker with it a bit more,but im gonna have to make a decision on fixin it or replacing it

    • @timberandtools
      @timberandtools  Рік тому +1

      I remember you mentioning that on another comment. Did not get it running yet huh? 441 good saw but there is a fair value to sell and upgrade to a newer saw there as well!

      @@timberandtools I finally got to take it apart. The water apparently got up just under the carburetor. The sawdust fines had gotten packed in around the linkage and cable and where it got wet it was like cement. After about 45 minutes with a few pick tools and a can of carb cleaner shes throttling up again. I hate that it happened, but I'm glad it's worked out. I let it idle some and did a few test cuts. Hopefully itll stay together for a few more seasons.
