TAYLORMADE P770 v P790 IRONS - HEAD 2 HEAD

  • In this head to head video the TaylorMade P770 iron is up against the P790 iron. TaylorMade have just launched the P770 iron which takes technology from the P790 iron and puts it in a smaller more compact package, but which iron is actually the best. In this video Ali tests both and finds something very interesting.

    I've had the 790s since they first came out, and I know exactly what you are going on about the odd rogue one that goes well beyond the 'normal expectancy' for that one that that just goes and goes, but always thought it was me hitting the perfect shot on the rare occasion... would seem not. I'd love to give the 770s a go, but I'm not ready to hang up the 790s, they have plenty of life in them & who doesn't shout a Weetabix moment when you hit an iron 10+ yards further than you'd expect ha ha. Great review Ali.

    I’ve just bought a combo set after being fitted at my local Taylormade performance centre.. both sets felt great .. I’ve went for 790 4-6 iron 1* weak and 770 7-pw can’t wait to get them and try them out. I currently have mizuno jpx 919 forged irons .. the flight and spin rates were much better for my game with the TMs.

    Hit the 770 tonight. Very nice feel and looks compact at the ball. Looks a lot better behind the ball than the 790s. Didn't have the 210 yard 7 iron bombs that the 790s did. 180 yard consistent distance.

    Great video Ali. I have the original 2017 P790’s. I used to get the odd flyer so I had the lofts weakened throughout the set by a couple of degrees by a fitter (ie. 7 iron from 30.5 to 32.5.) it seemed to solve the issue. There’s no doubt that the new P770 irons are very good, but I think that the smaller heads on them might not give the same confidence and forgiveness as the slightly bigger P790’s do to some players. Plus, at £1300 is it worth upgrading just to stop the occasional flyer? I personally don’t think so.

      I use the same irons as you and love them. The positives far outweigh any negatives.

      I've taken a different type of stronger lofted set (Mizuno Hot Metal Pros) and also made the lofts 2 degrees weaker on average (not the 5 iron) -> (5,6,7,8,9,PW) = (24,28,32,37,42,47) and agree that it does help - but I think the issue is also the very thin faces on these clubs. I also have the hollow Mizuno HMB 20 in a 24 degree 5 iron (with a lighter 110 gram Steelfiber shaft) that I have experimented with in my set replacing my Hot Metal Pro 24 degree 5 iron with 120 gram Steel Shaft - and after a lot of range work, I've decided I both really like it but that sometimes you just get a weird shot with it. If you hit a modern thin-faced driver enough, it can actually become illegal in certain spots as it gets thinner and the COR will move into the illegal range. Not exactly sure that this is happening as you need to hit a lot of shots, but if you do a lot of range work (I do) I think what might be happening is that certain clubs in certain tiny, tiny spots, just from manufacturing tolerances, can actually have COR values that are way past legal - and that is what you are seeing - but that you will never see on a forged blade that is a solid piece of metal. Mostly this is not an issue at all as it is a 1/100 thing and dirt or water on the ball or clubface does the exact same thing. More spin is just more better when you are trying to control your distances with your irons - and like you, I found that the 33/32 7 iron is the modern cutoff where more loft becomes better for your game from a scoring perspective - and equally, if not more important, I found that getting the PW back to the historical 46/47 (Tiger plays his at 47) is even more important

    I am currently using P790 and before i got P790 my handicap are 9.7( using TP5X ball), 5 months passed and i looked at my month to month handicap chat, I when down 0.7 each month, now 5 months later my handicap 6.2,. Yes P790 give extra distances and less spins, I change from using TP5X to TP5 and still gave almost the same distance( loose less then 3 Meters on average by Trackman) but more spin.

    Thanks for this. These P770 were in the running for my next set on looks and technology alone. Decided that i really does not like the feel feedback of the hollow bodied type iron heads. Thanks for sharing this video. Very helpful

    Good review. Have to give TaylorMade credit for coming out with three iron models that are strikingly beautiful. Usually their irons are somewhat garish, but seems TM went to finishing school and acquired some class.

    How do the new P770 compare to P760 in terms of forgiveness?? And what handicap range do you think P770 is aimed at?

  • @paulgray1

    If you were to reduce the lofts (make stronger) would that reduce spin?

    I was about to purchase the Ping i210s, but will now have to try these new P series irons as well. Does the P770 still have the same hollow iron sound? The sound and explosive distance were what turned me off from P790. Thanks!

    Would you say that the P790 would suit a more mid to high handicapper whereas the P770 would perhaps suit the better mid to lower HC ?

    I am currently playing the tailormade PSI from about 4 years ago. I have been interested in looking at the P790 because a friend of mine plays them and I've hit hisa couple times and I really love the feel. After watching your video I'm thinking the P770 may be more of an interest. I am currently a 2 handicap who prefers feel off a club face not too concerned with distance, which makes me think I should look more seriously at the 770. I appreciate any feedback thank you for time period

    If the person playing these clubs has to worry about 1 out of ten being a bad shot. They need to be playing a better club. Cheers

    I tried the p790 in January but as a low spin iron player it was massive issue i was averaging 3800 spin where i went to cobra forged tec Black Iron and got 6000 spin so much more control

    P770 rules the day. It’s interesting that the face location on the wild P790 shot was low and towards the toe. I wonder if that’s the hot spot or does it happen at certain spin numbers? Nice vid Ali.

    Great video, I don’t think this overtakes P790 though. 20 millimeters smaller head and weaker lofts is not what most of the market wants. I think this replaces P760 more than anything because the looks are stunning.

    Your strikes with the p790 were poor, nothing in the middle! Perhaps correct your strike pattern and they would all fly 190+ like the so called flier which was the only one you middled!

    • @AliTaylorGolf
      @AliTaylorGolf  4 роки тому +2

      The average strike with P790 was 7mm from centre of CG on head and the flyer was 10mm from the centre of the CG. They are still out of the sweetspot, if you're going to be critical at least try and be factually correct 😂😂😂

    • @rothvonhoyte

      I'm guessing a shot with 3k spin wasn't out of the middle...

    • @AliTaylorGolf
      @AliTaylorGolf  4 роки тому

      rothvonhoyte It was 3mm off the average strike, which were 7mm off the centre of CG, but still sweet spot.

      The strike pattern was far better with the p770, if you could repeat the same with the p790 it might be a fair test. I don’t have all the stats you have but the p790 looked all low and toe that’s all i spotted! Is there a hot spot or many?

    • @rothvonhoyte
      @rothvonhoyte 4 роки тому

      @@AliTaylorGolf i was more suggesting that this guys comment didn't make sense because hitting it out of the middle should never create such a low spin shot so it must be the club

    Taylormade is garbage, they sell clubs and 3 yrs down the line the logo detaches like it did on my RSI2 irons and they could not do anything about it. No more Taylormade scrap for me.
