I watch a lot of similar videos to this and I always wonder, how much of the differences you see between these two clubs is simply the club loft as opposed to any forgiveness built into the clubs. I would love to see the 790 8 iron numbers versus the 770 7 iron.
Hi Bill! It’s a really valid point and sadly difficult to prove without buying a full set of both irons as most manufacturers only give a 6 or 7 iron in their fitting kit - which in itself is a question the golf world should be asking itself if that is still the right way to fit? I do my best to acknowledge this by talking about the loft on the P770 being weaker and that the numbers, in terms of carry, are closer to a 7.5/8 iron for me. However I do think it’s interesting that the ball flights (launch, peak height and land angle) are incredibly close - with the P790 being higher peak height despite the loft difference. My overriding view on the irons is that, regardless of loft, there are some subtle differences in what each iron can offer different players but it isn’t significant - and I think that’s how TM intended it for these irons. great vid. Nice to see a fellow lefty. I bought some used stiff p790 irons today, upgrade from my ping g425 regular. My 7 iron was going 150 carry. Now 135 carry but I have to try remember there's more loft on the p770's!! They feel amazing and I am really really happy with the p770 ball flight+shaft weight heavier feel. Just gotta try remember my 6 iron is now the same loft as my old 7!!!
Hi Woodeh06! Thanks for watching my video! I really liked the G425 so totally get why you gamed them and I also think the P790 and P770 are the best clubs TaylorMade make! Great to hear you had a cool experience and you’re spot on re: the lofts. I always say to people your driver is the longest you can hit it and your lob wedge the shortest. The rest is just gapping your bag to work for you - sounds like you’ve done just that! All the best with it and thanks for giving my channel a watch! 👍🏼
I had the same issue with the P770 loft after playing with the Mavrik Pro (same loft as the P790 basically) and I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. It really hurt my confidence as well. I can’t accept loosing that much distance. Im shopping P790 now 😂 ( We could also just fit the loft 2 degree strong)
@justindisease9153 I think that’s the issue with all these power bats that we have these days isn’t it! None of us like to see the yardage go down! Haha! I always say to people that your longest club is driver and your shortest is lob wedge and anything else is just gapping your bag but my ego wants to hit each club as far as I can 😂
@@weekendtourpro Love that quote; it makes a lot of sense. What I would like is for the manufacturer to add the loft under the club, similar to the wedges. For example, Iron 7 (33º). That would make much more sense, as an Iron 7 can now vary within a wide range, of at least 5º.
@user-rr1bw1nk9r I hear you. We have it on drivers, fairways, hybrids and wedges so why not irons? I think I’ve seen it on the specialist utility/driving irons too. I’m also pretty sure a few manufacturers used to do it. I can only assume it’s years of marketing where they would say their 7 iron goes longer than previous models and actually the advancement in CG placement and materials meant they could crank the lofts up and retain ball flights etc. Interestingly my old Titleist T200s had it on the PW and GW in the set but not the rest of the irons. 👍🏼
Hi Luke, I really enjoyed this video, especially as it was a head to head between a players iron and players distance iron from the same manufacturer. I also thought the P790s were the best club for you, especially as you'd have to hit a 6 iron instead of a 7 iron, to get about the same distance, if you were playing the P770s. I suspect spin would start to become a lot closer when hitting an extra club in the P770s. If you were able to get hold of PXG clubs, I'd love to see you do a head to head between the 0317T and the 0311P Gen 6. BTW, what are you doing to work on increasing your club head speed? I was considering getting a The Stack System.
Hi Gary! Thanks for watching and thank you for the feedback on this type of video! I agree - P790 for me all day! I really like both though! I’m desperately trying to get my hands on some PXG as a few have asked but the place I usually film at don’t currently stock them, however I’m seeing if I can find them somewhere! Regarding speed training I’ve just been using the Superspeed Sticks with the PRGR monitor (video of both on the channel). If I’m honest I’m terrible at sticking with the plan but when I do, even in a few weeks I see gains. For me the big thing I’ve found I need to do is end each session just swinging a few drivers (without the ball) on the monitor so it gets my mind and body used to feeling comfortable doing it with a club in hand. In the 6 weeks of sessions I’ve done spread over 8 weeks, my 7i is up from 75mph to 79/80 and my driver is up from 88.5mph to about 92/93. Not bad for 15 mins, 3x a week! 👍🏼
@@weekendtourpro That's a great change in speed. Good on you. It makes a big difference when you can hit drives about 10-15 yeards longer which then results in one less club to the green. I currently swing my 7i at 80-82 mph and driver around 92-96 mph. My goal is to get my driver clubhead speed back to 100 mph next season. I retired this year and have been getting to the gym so that will help, Unfortunately, age is not on my side 🥲
@garymacdonald2596 I think it can be done Gary based on my own experience! I think my issue is I only picked up golf in my late 20’s (and as you can tell I’ve become obsessed!) so I didn’t have the luxury of building speed as a youngster so it feels a bit tougher to do now… I’m sure with the gym work you’re doing you’ll achieve that no problem! I have a friend called Builtbybrownpt on instagram who specialises in golf fitness (gym and speed work) and another who is a PGA Pro called Todd Adcock who specialises in long drive! Might be worth checking them both out on Instagram if you’re on it for free tips too! 👍🏼
I really found this interesting Luke, thanks for making the video. I have been playing the PING 425 irons for three seasons now, which I really do like a lot, but I’ve been curious about these TaylorMades for awhile. I’ll probably keep my 425s for at least another season, but being a LH golfer like yourself, I appreciate knowing what other options are available for us out there.
Hey Luke. Another fantastic review. I would like to see the very same format with Callaway. Game improvement versus players distance. Thanks again for your hard work putting this info out.
Hi Jeff! Thank you for the kind words. Is there any particular Callaway irons you’re keen to see head to head? I know the place I film has Paradym and Paradym X and I’d be surprised if they don’t have the new Apex CB as they had the older DCB version. Let me know and I’ll add it to my list! 👍🏼
The Paradym or X versus the Apex CB would be great. Given the fact that your ball striking seems to be consistent, the comparison should show if there is a notable difference in carry distance and or stopping power. Thanks.
@jeffdavis3885 added to the list Jeff! Sadly the place I film the club reviews at is in the middle of a refit so can’t get in until December (although the new studio looks like it’s going to be amazing!) but I’ll try do it this side of Christmas! 👍🏼
Hi Brian! Thanks for watching! Totally get why you want to test both as there’ll definitely be bits of each iron you prefer. Both great options in my opinion! All the best! 👍🏼
@@weekendtourpro Luke, I prefer the looks of the P770 but at age 69 I'm reluctant to give up too much distance. I noticed on the TaylorMade website that you can order the P770s with stronger lofts (up to 2 degrees). Not sure I'd want the full 2 degrees -- but maybe 1 or 1.5 degrees strong. Even with slightly stronger lofts, I suspect the P770 would launch higher and generate more spin than the P790. What do you think?
Hi Luke, what shaft specs did you use in this video? (Sorry i might have missed!..) I swing 7 iron Apex 21 at about 82-83 miles per hour but not happy with my current shafts (105g stiff, can't recall brand). Considering going to a 95g stiff as more maneuverable and feels better personally. Would love you comments mate. New subscriber!
Hi Will! Thanks for watching and for your question. It was the True Temper Dynamic Gold in a regular flex which according to the TM website is a 96g shaft. I used the same shaft in both clubs! I swing it a bit slower than you but always find I prefer regular flex shafts in irons but my swing seems to suit a mixture of regular and stiffer shafts in driver and woods dependent on the shaft (and brand as there’s no consistency in what is a regular vs stiff etc!). I also find headweight of the iron can impact things for me. Something like your Apex will feel lighter than a more game improvement head for example in my experience. Best of luck finding the answer - a good fitter will probably get you there very quickly! 👍🏼
@@weekendtourpro so I ended up getting a golf lesson with a few things to work on. Making progress, but feels foreign. Keeping the same equipment set up which is a relief, as it costs a decent whack to change setup. Cheers ⛳
Hi Will! Great to hear from you and how you got on! Sounds like you had an excellent experience as the person didn’t just sell you clubs for the sake of it! You’ll know this already but if swing changes feel foreign (and often horrible!) that can only mean good things as you’re making the change! Give it a few weeks and I’m sure it’ll feel great! All the best pal and thanks again for watching my channel! 👍🏼
Nice vid again luke well done mate ...always look nice those irons ...someone told me the 2021 790s are best generation 🤷 the 770 is nice looking ..never hit either but id prob go split set
Thanks Pete. I really like both generations of the P790 and in truth I don’t see a lot of difference between the two (in the 7 irons that you have access to for testing purposes!) but would be intrigued like another viewer said to see how they different at both ends of the set! I really do like them though! 👍🏼
I swing my 7 iron 85mph similar spin numbers launch angle etc. however carry it only 150 on the launch monitor. I game p790. I don’t get it. Yet on course I’m carrying it 160 yards.
Hi 2 Sqn! Thanks for watching my video! Which launch monitor are you using and is it set to ‘normalise’ like in my videos? In the winter if my launch monitor isn’t set on normalise then I carry it less! Always worth noting the mats in simulators (vs grass) cause the ball to spin about 1000rpm less too so that can impact some numbers! 👍🏼
@@weekendtourpro it’s skytrak. I’m not sure if the atmosphere is right on it. I only carry my drives 225 at 100 mph club head speed on the launch monitor. It’s crazy as it cost a lot of money.
@2sqnbandit379 might be worth having a read on the online forums to see if any owners recommend anything worth trying?! I’ve never used a SkyTrak but I did use a Mevo Plus for a while and found that my setup couldn’t get numbers that were anywhere near GC Quad or TrackMan! Always a few mph slower and yards shorter!
The winter setting might be why! The ball goes shorter in the winter due to temperature and air pressure. Trackman when normalised is set to 21 degrees Celsius / 70 Fahrenheit and sea level.
Very interesting. The 790 seems to be the better fit for the avg swing speed golfer but i wonder how the two would compare in the long irons, 4 and 5, where the stronger lofts of the 790 may start to affect carry distance and dispersion.
Hi radam! I think that’s a really valid question and a great point! I definitely know the extra spin in the P770’s would be welcome in those longer irons so you’re right they might bunch up. I guess, albeit not an exact science, that the typical P790 player may stop at a 5 iron and move to hybrids/fairway woods like I would do for the extra ball speed, launch and spin that typically comes with those clubs vs a P770 targeted player who perhaps would have more speed then me etc. and have less issue. But regardless I think you make an excellent point and one that’s worth people considering! Thanks for watching another video! 👍🏼
Great review. Had a chance to see both the 23' P770 and P790 in person, and to be honest, even when holding the two clubs next to/against each other, I can't tell the size difference apart. They look almost identical in size, spare the bottom of the two clubs.
Hi Adam! Thanks for watching and sharing your insight - I’m sure others watching the video will find it helpful! I agree! Both very similar looking clubs with marginal performance trade offs to suit different types of golfers and their needs! Both excellent too! All the best! 👍🏼
I will play the P790 until I get my clubhead speed up. I am currently 82-83mph, hitting my 7 iron about 160-165yds (carry) with ball speeds btwn 112-114mph & heights about 80-85feet. When I finally get my clubhead speed to 85-87mph I may move to the p7mc or new p7cb. 🤷🏻♂️
Hi Josephc1078! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I totally agree with everything you’ve said! As you saw, I swing it a little slower/hit it shorter than you and I’d be P790 all day right now! Would love to hit the P7MC and P7CB just for fun though! 👍🏼
Hi Philip! That's exactly why I started the channel! I was watching UA-cam videos and couldn't relate to their much faster speeds and scratch abilities - especially when testing clubs and balls etc. So thought wouldn't it be good if someone like me was testing - so I started the channel! Thanks for watching!
Honestly Pete don’t! You’re a danger to my wallet here! Haha! I love my new Mizuno’s but I’ve been toying with leaving a set of clubs at my parents (who recently moved to Scotland) for when I visit as saves the hassle and cost on the plane from where I live and the decision is whether I keep my old clubs inc. my Titleist T200 irons that are still sat in the garage or whether I sell them and buy a more suitable set fitted to me like the P790… but that does feel excessive for a set that would get 5 rounds a years worth of use! 😂😂😂
@@petekenny3774 Hi Pete. All my new clubs were fitted there. There’s a 7 Wood Vs 4 Hybrid video on my channel filmed with Simon at Precision Golf and it includes a tour of their facility! Check it out! I’d thoroughly recommend them - it costs a bit more but I’ve never trusted my clubs more. The service is exceptional. If you do book mention my name and I promise they’ll take even better care of you than they already do! I’ve been fit by Simon and Nick and had friends fitted by Tom. All excellent. 👍🏼
How about this take. Play which ever one you like to look at and inspires the most confidence behind the ball. You didn’t mention anything about blade length, offset, top line, etc. all of which appeals to me when they’re more compact and I’m a 14 handicap with a swing speed similar to yours. Just because you don’t swing out of your shoes doesn’t mean you should choose the 790. You may not want that extra 4 yards of rollout you are getting with the 790. If you need more distance, use the next club. I’ve never understood. Two things that could improve your video: you show the numbers, no need to voice all of them. And, show more views at all the angles and compare the shapes. It’s hard for the viewer to determine the shape difference of clubs. Good overall review.
Hi JustCarner! Thanks for watching and for your polite and constructive feedback - I’m always looking for ways to improve the videos and balance objective data led information with video duration which is tough when you want to show you hitting as many shots as possible! You’re the second person to tell me I don’t need to talk over the numbers but equally I had a lot more feedback from people telling me they like that so it’s hard to know which is best! Haha! The reason in this video I didn’t go into as much depth on looks and specifics of looks is that I’d just filmed and published a full review of the new P790’s the week before so it was a follow on and the P770’s have been out for some time and UA-cam had lots of other reviews so didn’t want to repeat stuff people had access to but rather focus on putting them in an average golfers hands who is close to the target market crossover for both and try to share my thoughts to help some other golfers out! Hopefully I’ve achieved that! I think my more recent comparison videos (eg Ping and Titleist) show some improvements in this format and cover more of the stuff you’re after! Thanks for watching! All the best! 👍🏼
Hi Alastair! Thanks for watching my video! I hate to generalise as I played with a senior the other week whose swing was faster than mine and something like the P790 would have been great for him but I do agree that for the typical senior I’d probably favour something closer to Stealth or Stealth HD (in the TaylorMade range). All the best! 👍🏼
Hi William! Thanks for watching and for the feedback! I put chapters on all my videos, so that people who aren’t interested in that part or who have done their research on that before hand, can easily skip straight to the hitting balls part! 👍🏼
Hi Brian! Thanks for watching and for sharing your feedback! You’re the first person to say this in over 50 videos so it’s interesting to hear that the format doesn’t work for everyone. Can you help me to improve by being a bit more specific/detailed please? Do you mean that you don’t like me reading the TM numbers out from the graphics on screen after each shot or something different? The reason I do this is because it would be difficult for me to then comment on the numbers without specifying which ones I’m referring to and because many viewers are watching on a mobile phone where the numbers are smaller to read! I appreciate that it won’t be perfect for everyone but keen to learn how I can improve! 👍🏼
your videos are great and very useful, however i think hes reffering to you reading out every number after every shot perhaps hitting a couple shots and then reading out the average numbers. Just think hes referring to how you read out every number after every shot and it gers repetitive. Still great content though.@@weekendtourpro
@@drencht7794 thank you. Really useful to hear and understand. I’ll experiment a bit on a future video and see how it comes out! Appreciate the constructive input! 👍🏼
Don't take no heed. The actual point of every test video it the numbers. And every number individually read out makes perfect sense. As that's what we are here for. If we wanted to watch someone just hitting balls we can turn on the golf channel.

@@weekendtourpro Thanks for those suggestions Luke. I'll check out those two when I get a chance.
Really good review Luke...thanks. I definitely want to test both of these irons -- currently play to an 11 HC.
(Sorry i might have missed!..)
I swing 7 iron Apex 21 at about 82-83 miles per hour but not happy with my current shafts (105g stiff, can't recall brand).
@@weekendtourpro good man. Cheers. Actually going to see a fitter in the next week to get a 1 on 1, and hopefully some clarity. Thank you sir.
@willdarsow ah fantastic Will! All the best! I’m a bit of a golf geek so would love to hear how you get on next week! All the best!
@@weekendtourpro winter it’s set on.
well said. thank you
Thanks Ken! Appreciate you watching and your kind comment!
Swing looks good luke👌
Thanks Pete! I’ll take that compliment! Haha! 👍🏼
Your club head speed and yardage are about the same as mine.
Hi Philip! That's exactly why I started the channel! I was watching UA-cam videos and couldn't relate to their much faster speeds and scratch abilities - especially when testing clubs and balls etc. So thought wouldn't it be good if someone like me was testing - so I started the channel! Thanks for watching!
Luke put em in your bag yiu hit them.lovely mate 👍😂😂 you could go 9 pw gap in 770 the rest 790 👌
@@weekendtourpro Luke have you ever tried precession golf for a fit ?? Meant to be amazing I'm considering going for iron fit with them
@@petekenny3774 Hi Pete.
Neither of these are any good for Seniors or moderate swing speeds im afraid. 🤔
Hit a ball ffs , to much faff.
Hi William! Thanks for watching and for the feedback! I put chapters on all my videos, so that people who aren’t interested in that part or who have done their research on that before hand, can easily skip straight to the hitting balls part! 👍🏼
@@weekendtourpro 😁👍
Stop reading all the numbers please
I do want to retain that a feature of the channel is objective data driven analysis so I’ll see if there’s some ways I can strike more of a balance and see how people respond to that! Appreciate the constructive input! 👍🏼
Don't take no heed. The actual point of every test video it the numbers. And every number individually read out makes perfect sense. As that's what we are here for. If we wanted to watch someone just hitting balls we can turn on the golf channel.
@angrybarsteward7301 thanks for watching my video and for your comment. I really appreciate it. I definitely think what this thread has shown is that we all like and want slightly different things! I know that if I want to grow an audience I’ve got to be open to constructive feedback so I have no problem with that but it’s also good to know that by making the content I want to see (a thorough dissection of the numbers) there are other golfers who want that too, like yourself! 👍🏼
Nice comparison - you don’t have to read every single number you’re displaying on the screen, with every single swing 😊
Thanks for watching bigsavagedaddy5960! I have to admit I have “reading out TrackMan numbers” diarrhoea! I can’t help myself! Haha! I do try to not do it on every shot but I sometimes fail! I hope that didn’t ruin the video for you and you managed to get something from it! Thanks for giving my channel a go! 👍🏼
