  • ARE TAYLORMADE P790 IRONS DEAD!? SHOULD YOU BUY TAYLORMADE P770'S?! SHOULD YOU BUY TAYLORMADE P770 IRONS OR TAYLORMADE P790 IRONS!? Taylormade have just launched their new 2020 irons including the Taylormade P770, Taylormade P7MC and Taylormade P7MB... but which irons should you buy? What are the best irons of 2020? What are the longest irons of 2020? The best irons for mid handicap golfers? The best irons for high handicap golfers? The best mid handicap golf clubs? Best high handicap golf clubs? It’s got to be one of the Taylormade P770 vs Taylormade P790 irons right? Let’s do it... and let’s do it now!

I changed for the 790's and I love them. Long, Forgiving, but looks good in the bag and offers feedback and a great feeling at impact. + I can outdrive my friends with the 4 iron which is a beautiful ego booster before making a double bogey :)

Golf buddy of mine just got the p790’s and I was well impressed! So impressed that I just had a fitting for new irons!! It wasn’t even close p770 with the kbs tour stiff 120 was clearly the club for me! Tried the titleist t100 and t100s, tried the p7mc and the p770.. I came from ap2 714’s and I’ll always be fond of those but.. onwards and upwards!
My whole bag was titleist and I wanted the t100 but the looks, feel and forgiveness of p770 was enough for me to put them in the bag!.. yesterday
P790 was too far for me and I didn’t like the shaft options I tried but it’s easy to see how some could love them they are nothing short of revolutionary in my opinion.. it’s a new class

I just tested both of them today. 770 was in my opinion looking really awesome, but unfortunately a touch less forgiving than the 790... and forgiveness is what i need from my irons. From the distance perspective, 790 is slightly longer, and the feel and confidence were better. I just made the order for the full set :-) I am very far from 190 carry

I have the P790's. The shaft fit for me made a world of difference to how they performed. Absolutely love them, best move I've made, I'm enjoying golf again after just about giving up! Taylormade are making some fantastic irons nowadays. I recommend anyone looking for new irons to try them and I'm sure they will be impressed.

Just got fitted for the 790 today and they swing and hit like a wet dream. Fell in love right away. I did try out the Mizuno Pro 225 but as soon as my fitter handed me it the first thing I said was the head felt heavy. 790 I was very consistent even mis-hits were great. Pro 225 mis-hits were awful but if I did get a good swing I smacked it well but no better than the 790. But the good swings were 1 outta 5 with 225. Now the wait for my order which I was told 3 weeks.

The 2.5 dergrees less loft + 5 mph ball speed + lower spin = 10 yards of difference for you, all the small things make a big difference as clearly shown.

Or just hit the 6 iron in your current set and achieve the same results.

  • @William45ish

I bought the original P790 and had the lofts weakened by a couple of degrees by a fitter, to bring my yardages between clubs closer. (ie 7 iron 32.5 from 30.5) this gave me more spin and control. Yes I did lose some distance, but hitting a 7 iron 190yds is bordering ridiculous as you’ll end up having to put a couple of gap wedges in the bag to compensate for the lofts being too strong.
Needless to say I’ve fallen in love with the P790’s. They are in a league of their own and are the club that most new clubs on the market are compared to and they still out perform them.
My advice is Don’t bother paying £1300 for the P770’s. Pay £900 for a set of P790’s then get the lofts weakened for about £100 by a professional fitter. You’ll have the same lofts as the P770’s, more forgiveness and you’ll be £300 better off to put towards that new Driver you want! 👍👍😂😂

  • @robbiles

Thanks James. You've made my decision for me. 770 it is. Seriously thou. I tested the original 790. 180 yard 7 iron scared me down the bottom end with my gaping. The 770's if 10 yards shorter makes me feel better with the bottom end so they are definitely getting tested. My current 7 iron is gaped at 164y - 30.5 degree loft but it is old tech now (Speedblade) so I expect these will be faster off the face and also getting fit would put me in the right shaft flex etc. I think these would combo great as well with the 790 4 iron and maybe even 5 given that TM's website has them being supplied in 1 degree weaker loft on order.

go in with a open mind and try everything. I wanted the p770 recently and after looking at the specs they actually were the worse clubs for me. I hit about 10 different heads and narrowed it down to the mizuno 921 tours, mp20 blades, srixon z forged blades, t100s titleist in the end spec wise the srixon z forged come out on top. And they also felt the best and hit just like I wanted....You need a open mind when buying clubs. I had the p770 spinning way to high and I lost about 15m in distance due to my launch angle.

I was fittwd for the P790s this spring. I really like them. I dont care for stronger lofts. I prefer more traditional lofts. I may consider doing a split split set with the P770s and P790. P790 4-6 and P770 7-pw

Just taken delivery of P790 after 8 yrs of MP59’s. They were ordered about 7 weeks ago just before the TM new irons were brought out - even though I couldn’t try the new irons I’m in no way disappointed with my choice. They are of course stronger lofted than the MP59’s which I had from 4 - PW plus 52 and 60 wedges. So I’ve gone for 5 - PW and 50, 56 and 60 wedges ( the milled grind wedges look stunning as well). Anyway just in time for our club championship comp this weekend.........

I just got fitted and ordered the P770’s. I hit the P790’s as well and they just felt a little firmer to me. Both great, but the P770’s felt softer and I was getting more spin on them, most likely due to the bit more loft. I don’t think anyone can go wrong with either. It just depends on what you are after. Distance/forgiveness- P790, some distance/some forgiveness in a smaller head size-P770.

JR is about the first reviewer to discuss the fact that a high handicap could be due to any number of factors other than irons. I hit my irons really well but have major problems off the tee which raises my score. A lot of others would suggest a game improvement iron, but I currently hit MP25's and I hit them well. Cant hit a driver to save my life unfortunately. Point is, I really appreciate him pointing that out.

Would love to see Mark the mid handicapper and you take the P770 and the JPX921 forged out on the course. Mizuno is saying with the hotter materials is why they are juicing lofts because the ball is going higher. Changing lofts is supposed to make ball not gonas high but consumer benefits by gaining a few yds. My current TA7 7 iron goes 160yds so if I can get a consistent 10 extra yds, I would likely upgrade.

  • @brandontbolt

790s are a bit of an anomaly. They are extremely forgiving but they actually suit a better player with high speed and spin. Fast players that hit the ball with lag and compression won't notice fliers with them and the low spin lends itself to hitting it closer to the pin. Just my personal opinion. I really want to demo the 770 to compare.

James..great job again. I have a problem about the distances. I game p790 currently and love them. They play great and feel great. I have played them on simulators and, like yourself, had many 7 irons that went 185 to 200yds. I've never gotten that result on course. It does go 175 ish. I'm curious if other p790 players have seen similar results on simulators to course...seems like something about how the ball reacts and how simulators pick it up makes them go farther than what happens on course. Please give them fair shakes out in the real world.

Great review! I’m in somewhat of a minority/unique situation since I don’t hear about it much…I’m a good ball striker, about a 7 handicap with my irons (per Arccos), but my putting is like a 25 HCPer and my driving is up and down from a 10HCP to a 20HCP due to two hip replacements and back issues not allowing me to practice driver much…anyway…I love the look and feel of a smaller head/MB/blade which is what I grew up learning on. But, due to not playing as much, I’d love something more forgiving that gives me good distance, but isn’t too big…with a 7 iron swing speed around 80mph my biggest challenge is height on the longer irons (5-7). The stronger lofted distance irons have stronger lofts and lower CG (making the CG too low for me as I have good shaft lean and hit in the right area most of time…so, using GI clubs, I hit them too low…wonder if I took the 790s and just weaken the lofts a little bit (degree or 2) it would help get that height….I don’t need a 7 iron to go 175…current one goes about 150. 160 would be good as my gapping would be better at the top end.

The 790s aren't outdated & I'm not sure I would buy a full set of P770 because they're mainly designed to be easier-to-hit long irons in a combo set with the P7MB/P7MC. I'd want to test the 8-9-W before considering buying.
P790 & PXG created an entirely new category and P790 is probably the best-selling iron ever. Don't think twice about your purchase (and I'm a Mizuno guy).

question.. so could the shot shape you are applying effect the overall distance? noticed 'draw' under classification? offset making you shape it that way?

Being fitted this sat for my irons with my pro , will go with whatever works , love the look of 770s but will they be for me ?, the new Sirixons look good and apparently perform aswell , heard the p790s can get a flyer which can go another 15 20 yards that could me a loss of a shot

my 7 iron in my 790’s is suuuuuper hot, i cant control it, it can sneak out there to 180+ and im generally 160-165 with other 7 irons, ive had it checked and its standard lie, i hate pullin it out its cost me alot of strokes in a years time, but i love my 790’s may try these 770’s

Have it bent weak or go to a high spin ball like Pro V1x or Bridgestone Tour B XS. The screamers are from too little spin.

I would struggle with p790 as a low spin player. I currently use cobra forged tech black irons which are similar loft but spin them around 1000rpm more spin. So if i was in market fir irons definitely 770 over 790.

33 degree 7 iron is pretty "standard" now. For most mid swingers it's around 160.
30 degrees is another 10 yards maybe even more on alot of people.

When I went for my iron fitting this spring I started on the p790s. There’s absolutely no reason why I want a 7-iron that goes 190 yards, absolutely throws my distance gapping in the trash. Got fitted into the P-760s which feel way better and can be controlled better. Was a no brainer. If you want distance, grab either of these sets. If you want control, move into the MCs or MBs

    • @electricalstuff259
      @electricalstuff259 2 роки тому

How does it throw your distance gapping in the trash? The rest of the set will be gapped relative to the 7 iron. Were you comparing the 7 iron in this set to the rest of your current set? LOL

@@electricalstuff259 what’s the point of fairway woods that my irons out distance? What about shorter yardages? I’d much rather have irons that aren’t mega distance that give me good gaps through the bag, all the way from the wedges up to the woods. P-760s are a superior iron for those who can hit them.

@@timdetrick3837 Obviously if you go to new irons that hit further you have to rearrange the rest of your bag. Pretty obvious.

If you get fitted for these, then i would say it depends on your golf course, you cannot play low spinning irons on a links or hard running course. But would the TM fitters be more concerned with "WOW look how far you've hit that"

  • @mh_golfer

I think the P770 is better suited for me because I want a bit more loft and spin vs distance. That and I would prefer a smaller, thinner club head.
2 1/2 degrees of loft and around 600 more rmps of spin would account for the 10 yards.

Got a feeling PXG and Taylor Made were in court over the 790 being a PXG rip off, or visa versa. Perhaps PXG were the first to develop the foam thing, but TM released theirs first. (Or visa versa again) Perhaps my memory is fading, just like my driver used to !!! I’ve been playing original 710 AP2 since their release and love them, especially after a re-shaft. However that 770 may just lure me to Taylor Made finally, they are a sexy iron to be sure. Best I toddle off for a test run.

You argue that the spin rate is low with the p770 but with the peak height compared to a blade, 5600rpm with that decent angle is pretty good and will hold most greens with good bite.

Just got a fitting 4 days ago. I tested the Mizuno MP20 HMB, P770 and P790. I had no intentions or considered hitting a Taylormade iron when I went in to the fitting. All 3 sets hit well but one club (for me) was far more superior to the rest. I walked out with a custom order for the P790s and Mizuno T20 wedges. The 790s were perfect for the way I hit the ball, a naturally high launch/ high spin player, which was causing me to lose distance. The 790s helped me find a better balance. I not only was averaging 20 yards further carry with the 790s than my current set but my angle of descent maintained an average of 45 degrees and ball spin was still great with the ability to control and shape shots.
Bottom line is I thought Mizuno’s were going to be good for me and was wrong. The way you play is the key to what club is better for you. Get a real fitting from a well researched fitter and trust the process. You’re likely to be satisfied with the results.
