    Great video! Your explanation of keeping the knuckles down helped me create more effective lag in my swing. As a result I am beginning to get more consistent and solid strikes and compressing the ball - smash factor. At age 69 I don’t have the strength I use to have, but I am getting more carry & distance with my irons than when I was in my 40’s. I am forever grateful!

    It was the introduction of metal shafts which led Byron Nelson to develop the modern two-plane swing in the 1930s which allows a golfer to bend and load the shaft by pulling the hands down (with right side bend) at the top of the backswing which first maxes out radial deviation (thumb back to forearm) then bends and loads the club shaft like a leaf spring before changing the direction of the club mass.
    That bending of the shaft, if maintained until just before impact, delivers much more compressive force to the ball. But to maintain that bend in the shaft the physics requires the hand to keep moving faster than the shoulder turn is moving the hand and club head together. That is accomplished by progressively increasing side bend as the hands drop, why with really good ball strikers you see their spines curving and head leaning out towards the ball at impact.
    So that is why don’t want to swing the shoulders in the downswing any faster than you can side bend to keep the hands moving faster than the shoulders. If the shoulders catch up with the hands the bend created in the shaft at the top with “the magic move” which loads it disappears and with it the ability to whack the ball further and higher. Golfers with longer torsos / shorter legs than average for height an advantage because they can side bend easier and more. The more the golfer can side bend the faster they can move the shoulder while still keeping the hands accelerating faster than shoulders to maintain the bend in the shaft - applied physics.
    Side bend is the real “magic move” because if the golfer is allowing the club force to pull the hands up to the top (not bench pressing with right arm) it is difficult to pull the right arm back down. But side bend can be done independent of shoulder turn which will work to pull the hands down while the club force is still pulling the club head to the top in the opposite direction - how to get optimal loading of the shaft.

    This stuff is amazing; ie, combining the trackman info with explanations. Like the smash factor, and the smash factor increasing as the loft angle decreases. You can learn more with a few minutes of this information than just being told verbally. Great video.

    Ever since you put a similar video on this topic out a few weeks ago, I've been swinging slower and absolutely CRUSHING my irons off the floor, either in the fairways, roughs, or tee-boxes. This technique actually gave me more confidence hitting off the floor on par 3's! This past weekend I gave this advice to a young fella I was playing with and by the end of the round he was a convert!
    Great advise for anyone looking to hit the ball well.
    Great content, Ali!

    This has been my biggest issue for over a year. Great video! 3/4 swings doesn’t feel like I can play those par 3s correctly, but with efficiency and slower club speed (control), I’m pretty confident this would work. Currently, I’ve been using full swing and I’m adding a lot of loft based on the fact that my ball is launching high and I’m only getting 130 yards with a 7 iron (140 on a good day).
    We’ll see and try it out though.

    I liked the first shot with the half swing, Ali. 135 used to be my norm in my younger days. I am 63 now and lost 10 yards due to age and swing speed. I have been messing about with my grip to compensate, trying the interlock, bassball, or the overlap idea. I have gone back to my original interlock. My club pro discovered that I was strangling the club yesterday lol . It was affecting the release. I was better this morning. Thanks for this.

    Thanks man, great video. A lot of guys need to hear this message - not just the delofting at impact part, but the "it's OK to have a slower swing speed and adjust your equipment to suit" part. Half the struggle I see people have in golf is unrealistic ideas of their actual abilities. One of the things I love about golf is that if you are brave enough to be honest with yourself (or secure enough to take on feedback from a golf professional) you will see improvement, whatever level you are at. Cheers mate!

    One thing I found is with this method it is hard to get the ball stop on the green. I believe you would need a high spin ball to keep the ball on the green.

    • @pjpcadet
      @pjpcadet 2 роки тому

      Hi Thomas! I don’t understand in wich way this method does affect the spin… All the good strikers deloft at impact. The amount of spin depends on the characteristics of the club. Could you tell me more please? Good day!

    • @thomasmccauley9607
      @thomasmccauley9607 2 роки тому +1

      @@pjpcadet I play on pretty firm greens. If you come into the green with a low trajectory the ball tends to hit and run through the green with a low spin ball. I find that a higher spin ball increases the trajectory and helps it stop on these firm greens. I support the concept of shaft lean at impact, but I found I didn’t get enough loft with the lower spin ball and it would in most cases run through the green. So my assumption is you need spin and loft to stop on the greens I play on.

    • @pjpcadet
      @pjpcadet 2 роки тому

      Ok with you Thomas. I play on very firm greens too. And I agree we both need back spin. However, my belief is that spin is delivered by the kind of club you play ( a blade with a standard 34 degrees loft for a 7 iron for instance) and the negative angle of attack. I say that but I unfortunately can’t stop the ball as well on my greens !! So I do agree with the high trajectory in our case. You’re right.

    This is precisely what my coach was teaching me last week. My 7 iron just launches the ball like a bullet off little more than a 3/4 swing. Great video. 👍

    Great video, thank you Sir.. I struggle to get winded-up fully on the back swing and therefore play with a 3/4 swing.. Always believed that getting as much of the "sweet spot" on the ball is better than just trying to smash it. And also straight and "in play", rather than distance. One of my instructors many years ago told me to "just swing the club, don`t have a mindset of trying to hit the ball!!" Your video has just proven all of that.. 👍👍👍

    tight grip and early release are swing killers, late release and light grip coupled with a easy swing are key moves, most handicap golfers are not built like pro golfers so don't expect to swing with the same speed go with what you have and swing more consistently with feel and rhythm golf is not "how far" its "how many"

      No doubt about what you say @Bob!
      Even low handicap players are not shaped like tour pros. A full swing with great speed needs to work hard every day with coaching. A 3/4 swing hitting the sweetspot is more efficient for average players and let them smile again on the course. In France , most of the teachers try to build a swing that is too complicated for amateurs and this causes frustration. I like your point of view. That’s the key !

    I started with Titleist T100 irons, 5i-GW. I hit my 7i 165-170 yards, but my 5i was only getting maybe 5 yards further than my 6i (180-185 yards).
    One way I was able to get around this, was getting the T200 5i, and I added a T300 4i. The added weight at the back/bottom of the more forgiving clubs, combined with the reduced loft, helped me get my 5i over 200 yards, with a medium to high flight.

    Good explanation of true principles. I think though that you could have substantially more power with your speed. You are snatching the club inside with your hands and swinging inside very fast with your arms. If you have less active hands and swing on a wider arc, you won't need to bow the wrist as much and throw your head up on the way to impact. If you shift your weight more entirely over the lead leg (head stays back toward center, of course until impact or later) and then feel as though the axis of horizontal rotation is more toward your lead side with your weight more over the lead foot through and beyond impact, then you will be able to cover the ball more with your chest, bow the wrist less and compress the ball more with more club face control. The faster you get the rotation axis forward, the more you can hit through the ball. By doing this you move the line along which the club is swinging, around your body faster which gives you more leverage through the low point of your swing. Your might even put some long irons back in your bag :-) Cheers.
    Addendum: I just saw that you made a video (about the coin) a week earlier that basically showed exactly what I'm talking about and achieved much more punch in the iron shots. I would just say that you don't have to stay forward in order for this to work and can in fact take advantage of the momentum from a rearward shift and down cock of the wrists, but the secret is planting your weight correctly when you come back. If the post that you create with the lead leg on the way down does not support your hip rotation and trail arm delivery and uncocking precisely you will struggle to release well through impact. It is easy get the wrong distance from the ball with the hips or wrong degree of hip rotation at the point of full weight transfer and thus be well out of synch. In my experience, the hips need to feel closer to the ball than one might expect to get optimal results. Also, the longer the club the more you must wait through the weight transfer for the hips to have time to turn enough to get a maximal release due to the width of the arc.

    A variation on the swing fast, stop short drill which I prefer. Delivers better results and is useable on the golf course. Pretty much how Fleetwood hits an iron.3/4 swing, hit hard into the ball then follow through short. Promotes good ball striking and is easy to implement.

I just bunted it in the fairway, took a couple more clubs and controlled my distances and got up and down a lot, and made a couple of long putts on par 5’s. Of course once I healed up I started swinging for the fences and absolutely suck again. Recently, I’ve started doing this again and changed the bag to 3,5,7,9 woods and 6H. Practiced the more controlled swing today and played well.

      @@Bob-nu3xe I understand that but the question is whether there is more compression with, eg a 7 iron with 35 deg of static loft but 27 deg of delivered loft (due to forward shaft lean which many find very hard to achieve) than with a 5 iron with 27 deg of static AND delivered loft (ie. no forward shaft lean)? Shouldn’t the flight and spin be the same, assuming the same angle of attack?

    Do you encourage a pause at the top of the backswing?

    • @AliTaylorGolf
      @AliTaylorGolf  2 роки тому

      Not ideally, the club should be completing the backswing while the lower body is already starting the downswing.

    If you’re delofting a 7iron for smash factor why not just hit a 6iron? What are the other benefits of this method?

    • @fineartattic

      A 7 iron is easier to hit than a 6 iron.

    • @onsenguy

      A delofted 7 iron Will result in a more solid collision then a more upright 6 iron. Irons are designed to be struck with some loft taken off.

    I really liked this video and makes perfect sense. But in reality though aren’t you just changing the angle of your 7 iron to be more that of a 5 iron. I know when I hit the ball like this it feels really good and I’m much more likely to take a nice divot in front of the ball. That’s the real advantage for me

    Does this apply at all to the Driver? I’m so confused about how iron swing and driver swings relate to each other

    • @adnanshoukat1793
      @adnanshoukat1793 2 роки тому +1

      Yes it applies to driver. There's one basic difference between driver and iron. With irons you are hitting down on the ball. With driver you are ideally hitting up on the ball. Any other differences are derived from this and the length of the club

    • @AliTaylorGolf

      A stronger grip is actually more cupped at address. it's more down to correct movement during the swing.
