  • After replacing the timing chains, waveplates and a bunch of other parts, I recorded stop motion video of the installation of the engine cradle back into the car in my garage. No lifts were used in the making of this video - only 3 furniture dollies, 4 jack stands (2 as backups), 4 jacks (one assembled in the video, actually), and about a half dozen blocks of wood.
Total elapsed time was about 62 minutes.

Use Dowel rod in the tappets to help guide the cradle to the right alignment . This will save you from misalignment issues .

I've got our engine cradle sitting on the floor right now, but I can't get enough height to clear the frame rail. I think I'm going to have to remove the intake manifold.

Mine wouldn't clear without removing the upper intake manifold. Good luck!

Chris Bruno Thanks for the video. Everything worked out well with ours. She's been driving it for a few months now. I ended up replacing a large number of items "while I had the engine out". Brakes, cv axles, hubs, wheel bearings, timing chains, alternator, a/c compressor, spark plugs, oil, power steering fluid, VSS, ISS, TCM, radiator flush, serp belt, new headlights, alignment, and of course several transmission parts associated with the broken 3-5-R clutch. I went ahead and rebuilt the entire transmission including the valve body. I discovered quite a bit of wave plate debris when I split the transmission case apart. The new alternator failed a month after install, but it was replaced for free by the parts store. Also, the charcoal canister purge solenoid went bad last weekend (P0496), but that was a $35 10 minute fix. She was happy because I clay bar, waxed, and detailed the car too. Thanks again and take care.

Anyone know where I can get a lift kit for my 2018 buick encore?

Thanks for posting this video. I'm currently doing the same work on my wife's GMC Acadia. It looks like you had to remove the intake manifold and power steering reservoir to gain enough clearance to get the engine in and out. Did you completely remove the prop shaft or just disconnect the coupler to the transaxle? Also, did you snap any of the exhaust studs? I snapped one and now I have to figure out how to get it out. I'm thinking I have to heat it with a torch and hammer on it with a punch.

I left the manifolds on the engine but did not break any of the manifold to catalytic converter studs (fortunately). When I break studs, I usually weld a nut or bolt onto what remains and then heat with a torch and remove. It's tedious, but it works. I did fully remove the rear prop shaft, but I may not have needed to. I'll be posting some more videos eventually, but I don't seem to have much time to finish the editing these days.... Good luck!

sup Chris - how high do you have to lift the front to removed the whole cradle?

+jd5179 I don't remember the exact measurement, but I want to say it was somewhere around 28" to the bottom of the opening in the wheel well.

did you mAKE videos on the pump removal and install and your timing change swap?

+Brandon Keele Hi Brandon, I recorded the footage of the timing chain swap but I haven't edited those for UA-cam yet. I'll see if I can finish those up in the next week or so..
