Thanks! I bought a 2014 Durango with 19K miles for my grandson, changed the oil and mucked it up. I was about to get the metal aftermarket part when I saw this video. I had never changed an above engine filter and placed the o ring incorrectly. Problem solved, truly appreciated young man! THANKS AGAIN!
Almost replaced the oil filter mount due to this problem. Thank God I came across this video. I had the o-ring in the wrong place and now with your information shared it is correctly placed and oil leak is gone. THANK YOU!!!
Thank You, Thank You, I put the o-ring all the way up on my 2015 3.2L Trail Hawk and got an oil leak that the garage told me required a new oil filter housing, just like you said. U - The - Man !!
Thanks for posting. 35 years in the game and still learning. I missed the alignment of the ring and it caused a leak. Had this car for ten years. Never happened before. Saved a big headache. Almost took it to a shop.
Thank you for this information!! No joke this was so helpful. I just did the Dorman all aluminum oil filter housing swap and everything went great until I did a 10 mile drive test. Yes I did do an idle test and all looked good. Then after the drive, oil everywhere! Oil spitting out of the new cap into engine where I just cleaned! What a mess! Glad I found this video. Life saver. 👊🏼
Thank You, you are the only one who has pointed out this common mistake. I never have a problem when I do the oil change myself. It is only when I take it to the dealer. Then they wind up changing out the whole oil cooler.
Hey Dave, Here was my situation. Just bought a 2012 3.6. Went to change the oil and filter. Couldnt get the correct filter. Went to 3 different parts stores. All the filters were wrong. Finally called the previous owner only to find they had the filter housing that leaks was replaced and the dealer put in a newer model part! I looked up the part for 2014 model and sure enough the filter was correct. I dont know if this happened to other owners but i just wanted to point this out! Thanks
I made a video on changing the old design out for the new one and showed how it is possible, main difference….requires the newer oil filter as you found out.
Yes I just changed my 2012 oil filter housing bought a new one on Amazon install it did my first oil change and I have noticed different oil filter I guess I am not the only one out there with this issue must be 2014 model they gave me
Holy s***!!! That's why I don't have the correct oil pressure!!! I have a 14 and up housing and I bought a 13 filter thinking that's what it was and turns out it is a 14 housing.. OMG wow I was about to get some serious work done over the weekend.. I'm glad I stumbled upon motor City Dave and his channel.!!! Thank you Dave
Wish I saw this before I changed the oil filter / O ring . Would’ve saved headaches , stress and a near catastrophic engine oil pressure situation . Thank you for the great information . I almost gave up . !!!! Changed the location of the O ring on the oil filter cap to where you described . Problem solved . Love my truck again .
Thank you! I was googling this very thing because it wasn’t clear if the o-ring went to the very bottom or not. Much appreciated for taking the time to make this video.
Dave, not long ago my wife took her 2018 Journey (3.6L) to a local repair shop for an oil change. She came right home afterwards. It's about a mile or two away. She then went out to go to the grocery store
They put too much pressure on the oil filter which probably loosened the oil cooler or the oil cooler gaskets. Had to replace the oil port twice on my 2011 Chrysler 200 3.6
Thanks! I had searched for some videos to get an idea of what problems came up during ram 1500 oil change. None where the exact engine/year I had, so I did mine with no problems. Then I walked in the door from finishing and YOUR video just happened to be in the 'next' matrix of videos on my screen...so I selected it: OH FUDGE!!! I did place the oring at the highest groove, didn't pay attention when I took off the previous. I fixed it now before I got into any leak issues.
exactly this happened to me! (o-ring was put all the way down on my 2016 model). You are absolutely correct that it's very misleading on those housings...the last groove (1 too far down) is inviting to put the o-ring right there, which will cause a leak. Chrysler should have designed it like the older model, where the bottom area of the housing is solid and thus preventing the o-ring to be put all the way down and thus in the wrong spot.....
I'm basically my shops Chrysler guy now. And it started by me buying an 07 pt cruiser and using your videos to do my water pump and timing belt. Currently buying a 01 dream cruiser with 30k miles. Runs perfectly. And under 1k price!
I want to thank you for having this channel. I watched all you're videos about the rocker arm replacement and I just finished replacing all the rocker arms and lifters in the right cylinder head on my 2014 town and country which has 130,000mi+. Everything is fine no engine light. Thank You so much!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video. The first time I changed the oil, I didn't pay attention when taking the old one off. I was looking for this video but it didn't exist. Lucky for me common sense prevailed. Also, don't overtighten the cap, you can crack the housing. When I hear the oring make a little squeak, I know I'm done.
I really had this question when I tried to change the oil for my dodge van years ago. OMG you r the first tech who really cares about the details of the real problem.😊 👍
Thanks man just saved me some money. Very informative and nice presentation with the lighting and using the flat blade to actually point out the proper seating location of the O ring. Be 😎
Thanks for the video. Was changing the 2014 Grand Caravan oil, removed the o ring without noticing where it was seated. I would have placed it in the right groove, but the video gave me some peace of mind. Very helpful.
Great video. This happened to me. I do my own oil changes and always put it in the right spot. Had it messed up and put a new o ring on it. Thanks! Awesome video.
Excellent job on letting people know about the oil filter issues that these vehicles have. I can see how easy it would be to put the o-ring in the wrong spot on the 2013 to the present filter housing, but it takes a good true mechanic to know that and pay attention to a little detail like that. It goes to show you that not just anyone can change oil in these newer vehicles. My step son and his wife are dealing with this issue right now, they had an oil change done on their 2019 Dodge Caravan and it has been leaking oil ever since they had it done. They took it to a place that does oil changes, transmission fluid, filter flushes and changes and they also detail vehicles any way you want, and so on. I won’t mention the name of the company but they are a nationwide franchise like any fast food restaurant. I sent them this video that you made so they would have the information in their back pocket so they can get the service they deserve.
Good lord, I have done my oil for years but I was in a rush and I just looked. Boy did I mess up and so glad I saw the oil and took all this off. Found out I did the exact thing you just said. 😂 thanks a lot My thing was I didn’t take off the old black o ring I put the new red/brown one on the top… lol so two o rings don’t make it safer …. Lesson learned
Didn't even have to think twice where the oring will go in my 18 JKU, But ty for pointing out for those who are new to the scene and are trying to learn to change their oil.
I put this in the wrong spot the first time I changed the oil in my Rubi. Messy and smelly and after a lot of cleaning and a second filter, there's a note in my maintenance book to double check the o-ring placement. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much, just had my oil housing changed due to leaking, I pray it was not just the fact that I placed the oil ring in the wrong location. Oh well, you lose you learn. Thanks again, great video.
This is what I'm scared of. I brought my jeep to firestone and told them that i may have just put the o ring on wrong but not sure if it's that or the housing
Great video! Thank you for showing us the proper installation of the o-ring. My Kia K5 has the same setup as this, so I shouldn’t have a problem on the 3.6 Charger that I’m performing an oil change on tomorrow.
Iv watched 6 or 7 video about the oil filter housing, it happend to me 3 yrs ago and this time it happened to Walmart, u explained exactly what happened to me twice, once by me and once by walmart, the other videos were non informative, thank u Ernie
Well THANK YOU! I have a 2019 Grand Caravan and had changed the oil filter 4 times already (22,000 miles) but never had this problem. Gotta say that you saved me a ton of work and headache!😃
Thank you! You most likely solved my problem. CRITICAL MISTAKE! My 2019 g/Caravan threw a P06DD code indicating oil sensor stuck off. Some said check for low oil before replacing sensor. Checked oil and NONE on dipstick! Looked underneath and oil all over underside but never saw leak in gravel drive. Saw orange oring on cap before removing after seeing your video and knew it was wrong! Could have destroyed engine by stupid mistake. I always replace drain plug because oring is made into plug and comes apart. Hope engine is ok and this is only problem. Getting ready to change oil
Thanks, good advice, will recheck my wife's 2019 3.2 that I just finished the service, also had to Google how to reset change, instructions that pop up on the instrument panel is wrong, had to depress the accelerator pedal 3 times
Thanks for the video . When I saw the filter housing on the Jeep I though sort of reminds me of my TDI Jetta that I driven a lot of miles . I just install o ring and run a screw driver around it a couple times to make sure it's not twisted and lubricant the o ring . These things I do probably are not necessary but it takes just a few minutes.
Hello Dave, good information on the filter But May I add, when installing the o-ring once the o-ring is in the correct position use a pick and slide it under the o-ring and roll the pick around the cap to make sure it seated properly. Doing this will prevent the o-ring to twist when tightening the cap. Not doing this could cause the o-ring to twist and then it will leak.
Thank you Dave for your work! I have a 2016 300 with 116000. Just got my oil analysis back from blackstone labs. These engines can last a long time if maintained
Just changed my oil yesterday... while driving at work today my "Low oil pressure" warning came on... went about 3 miles before finally pulling over and checking the oil level.. bone dry. Looked underneath to see if the oil drain plug fell out... nope, but oil was dripping from everywhere under the truck.. Looked up top,... it was the oil filter... took it off... yep, I had the O-ring all the way up top. Just glad i found it when i did, hoping i didn't do any permanent damage to the engine.
This exact same thing happened to my Mom's chrysler 300 today. May I ask, Does your engine run ok now without any extra noises as a result of running out of oil months ago?
I arranged for a quick oil change at a local Chrysler dealership. When I started my 2014 Chrysler 300S after the oil change no warning lights stayed on. Drove a mile on a city street before I reached the freeway, where I am then going 70-plus mph. About 2 miles into the freeway drive the dash lights up like a Christmas tree, along with audio warnings. It seemed too dangerous to stop on the freeway. I got off on city streets as soon as possible, probably within a quarter mile. Shut the engine off and popped the hood in a parking lot and found smoke coming off the exhaust manifold and no visible oil on the dipstick. I called the dealership and told then to pay for a tow and to fix the problem at their expense. The next day the dealership told me (1) they found some oil on the dipstick when they checked in the morning and (2) the problem was caused by a faulty gasket on the oil filter cap. The oil must of leaked out of the filter canister, onto the top of the engine, before it dripped down to the exhaust manifold. The dealership paid for the tow, another oil change, and cleaned the engine compartment. The engine noise now seems normal and performs as expected. This could of been due to a defective gasket. It seems more likely the oil change technician misplaced the gasket. All it takes in one person making a mistake.
Wish I'd seen this video when I did my oil filter housing on my 2014 Cherokee. I put the gasket in the wrong place. But... it worked fine IN THE WRONG PLACE for a couple of weeks, then blew out spraying a quart of oil on top of the engine and under the hood. Luckily, I pulled off the road into the parking lot of a shop here in Phoenix. The manager took pity on me, had me back on the road in half an hour and then wouldn't take any money for the time & materials!
Same with the V6 Camaros.... I bought a 2011 Camaro for dirt cheap,,, the seller had the oil changed, the orange was put in the threads, and poof, massive oil leak, and smoke from burning oil... I guessed it was something minor, and made an aggressive offer, the seller took it. I scored a great buy.
Thanks for the tip! I just installed the Dorman aluminum housing on a 3.6 and the owner has had it back for over 1 year. Now he says he has an oil leak. I'll be he misplaced the o-ring when he changed his oil.
Thank you David. When I bought my used 16 JKU, the Jeep desler did the oil change as part of the sale. When I did my next oil change, I took a pic of the cap before I swapped the filter and oring. Great video.
You nailed it! Rubber O ring was installed on the last ring (wrong spot). Thanks! Now, not sure how to clean a quart of oil from the Valley of the engine with out removing everything that is in the way. Can I just leave the oil there?
This is my new problem. Mechanic said i lost about 3qts. Day after i drove 30 miles i get out the jeep and i hear like a fire kindling sound that was the oil. Later that night i replaced the filter. My oil was low and didn't realize so the p06dd code still came on. Mechanic told me it was the housing. I think that's bullshit so i took it back. Oring was on wrong
Just charged the oil filter bypass valve on our 2011 grand caravan. The bottom of the old bypass valve crumbled and the brittle parts went down into the housing and I can't retrieve them. Will these brittle plastic parts harm my motor in any way on the old van? Thanks.
I have got a 3.6 it has a miss after I changed the coil pack and spark plug and the check engine light is on, first it was off after changing these parts and than It came back on, it says miss fire on cylinder 1
Question I need an answer to by a professional, since I have a Jeep JLUR with 30,000 miles on Pentastar 3.6L. is there a problem with the Pentastar 3.6L and Dry Starts cause by the Cartridge Oil Filter style and will replacing it with a Baxter Performance cartridge to spin-on oil filter adapter solve this problem? the internets is 50/50 on this, a gimmick or a life saver.
Did oil change myself, and after 250 checked engine bay - foun that oil filter cap was sweating. Chechked - yes, it was my fault. Happy that oil level is ok, oil was sweattinh not running. Ordered new filter and got lesson how to change cartrige filter.
What would cause all 6 qts to spill out immediately after an oil change (firing up engine again) when oil pan plug and oil filter were torqued to specs?
Thanks a lot. I have been doing my oil change for 7 years for my Wrangler and Chrysler 300, and I've been placing the O ring in the wrong slot for the past 7 years. No wonder sometimes I found the car was missing 1 quart of oil in oil change and sometimes didn't.
Hi Dave. Thank you for this. Question: if the O-ring is put into the last thread of the oil cap just under the groove where it is supposed to be, would that make it very hard to screw the cap on? And, if someone were to persist in tightening the cap anyway, could that lead to cracking the oil filter adapter housing which could lead not only to oil loss, but coolant loss, as well?
Thanks for the donation and glad it was something very simple.
I've had my oil filter housing replaced on this truck twice over 7 years and now it's leaking again. Thanks for the tip.
Almost replaced the oil filter mount due to this problem. Thank God I came across this video. I had the o-ring in the wrong place and now with your information shared it is correctly placed and oil leak is gone. THANK YOU!!!
Thank You, Thank You,
I put the o-ring all the way up on my 2015 3.2L Trail Hawk and got an oil leak that the garage told me required a new oil filter housing, just like you said.
U - The - Man !!
This video is gold. I really hope owners of these engines watch this!!
Appreciate it, simple mistake that a lot make.
Thanks for posting. 35 years in the game and still learning. I missed the alignment of the ring and it caused a leak. Had this car for ten years.
Never happened before. Saved a big headache. Almost took it to a shop.
Ditto
How much leaked
Nice video - changing my Grand Cherokee oil myself for first time today and will make sure I get gasket in the right place !
Takes away all the doubt about where the o-ring actually goes! Thumbs up!!
Life saver. 👊🏼
Wow I honestly just wow. David I'm speechless the fact that you even have to make a video like this is Wow.
Hard to believe but seen it at least 4 times this year alone. Doesn’t seem like a lot but if it’s happening here it’s happening everywhere.
@@MotorCityMechanic yeah it's still shocking though.
Thank You, you are the only one who has pointed out this common mistake. I never have a problem when I do the oil change myself. It is only when I take it to the dealer. Then they wind up changing out the whole oil cooler.
Great to see someone not just trash the engine due to operator error. Thanks
Thanks David for identifying simple O ring mistakes.
Hey Dave, Here was my situation. Just bought a 2012 3.6. Went to change the oil and filter. Couldnt get the correct filter. Went to 3 different parts stores. All the filters were wrong. I made a video on changing the old design out for the new one and showed how it is possible, main difference….requires the newer oil filter as you found out.
Yes, my 13 has the 14 housing wit the ball joint at the bottom
Yes I just changed my 2012 oil filter housing bought a new one on Amazon install it did my first oil change and I have noticed different oil filter I guess I am not the only one out there with this issue must be 2014 model they gave me
Holy s***!!! That's why I don't have the correct oil pressure!!! I have a 14 and up housing and I bought a 13 filter thinking that's what it was and turns out it is a 14 housing.. OMG wow I was about to get some serious work done over the weekend.. I'm glad I stumbled upon motor City Dave and his channel.!!! Thank you Dave
@michaelmorello2526 great catch. Hope that’s all it needs
How much oil did you lose?
Thanks as I did my first oil change in my Challenger. I referred to this video to make it was right. Thanks again!
Thank you! I was googling this very thing because it wasn’t clear if the o-ring went to the very bottom or not. Much appreciated for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you very much! The oil leak happened a couple of days after my oil change. I knew it had to be something I did wrong.
Dave, not long ago my wife took her 2018 Journey (3.6L) to a local repair shop for an oil change. She came right home afterwards. It's about a mile or two away. She then went out to go to the grocery store
Thanks for info
They put too much pressure on the oil filter which probably loosened the oil cooler or the oil cooler gaskets. Had to replace the oil port twice on my 2011 Chrysler 200 3.6
This guy's alright steers u in right direction with ease
Thank you! Did this the Wrong way twice before I figured it out
Thanks again
exactly this happened to me! (o-ring was put all the way down on my 2016 model). I want to thank you for having this channel. I watched all you're videos about the rocker arm replacement and I just finished replacing all the rocker arms and lifters in the right cylinder head on my 2014 town and country which has 130,000mi+. Everything is fine no engine light.

The correct torque value for the cap is 18 ft/lbs. Very important for the stock polymer units. The all aluminum not so much.
Just caught this video before replacing the filter housing o ring on my Kia Sedona. Saved my day as this immediately fixed the oil leak. Thank you!
Just goes to show that they use the same basic design on a lot of vehicles and brands. Simple mistake. Thanks for watching
Thanks for this video. My 2022 Wrangler is soon due for its first oil change. I will be sure to pay attention when installing the seal on the cap.
I really had this question when I tried to change the oil for my dodge van years ago. OMG you r the first tech who really cares about the details of the real problem.😊 👍
Thanks Dave! That may be how a ''stealership'' got oil covering my 'well'!

Great and timely info. Saved me 300 dollars and 4 hours labor. Thanks!
Good deal, thank you for covering this common problem!
It's great to be aware and know what to avoid.
Didn't even have to think twice where the oring will go in my 18 JKU, But ty for pointing out for those who are new to the scene and are trying to learn to change their oil.

Well THANK YOU! I have a 2019 Grand Caravan and had changed the oil filter 4 times already (22,000 miles) but never had this problem. Gotta say that you saved me a ton of work and headache!😃
Great video exactly problem I had. So helpful you made a video I could come back to as I continue to change the oil
I-was about to leave my jeep at service because of a-leak and now i know whyyyy thank you

I try to put out a few when i can. More coming soon.
Thanks so much for this video you saved me alot of time and money.
Thank you. I haven't done this yet but I took a prtsc and put in my van folder.
Excellent info! Very easily made error. Thanks. Old Ben
Great video, I've been putting Oring in wrong place. thanks for schooling me!
Hello Dave, good information on the filter
But May I add, when installing the o-ring once the o-ring is in the correct position use a pick and slide it under the o-ring and roll the pick around the cap to make sure it seated properly. Doing this will prevent the o-ring to twist when tightening the cap. Not doing this could cause the o-ring to twist and then it will leak.
You made my day Dave. Thank you
Glad I could help. Make sure to subscribe if you haven’t already
What is the torque spec for the filter?
I've haven't screwed that up yet, but it's still good to know it happens.
Sometimes we learn from others mistakes so that we never do it lol
Dave, as always you rock. ❤️ your content. 🙏
Thanks for following the channel and for always watching the new videos
Awesome vid.....such a minor oversight that may cause max stress!
Thank you for pointing this out. I haven't had to yet. But I know that this will be good knowledge when I do
Thank you Dave for your work! I have a 2016 300 with 116000. Just got my oil analysis back from blackstone labs. These engines can last a long time if maintained
I have a 2013 Durango 3.6 with over 210000 miles on it and is just starting to have issues.
Yes I check that fuse already

No extra noises and it runs OK. That was a close call.
Wow! Great looking intro clip! Great content too for that matter.

Thank you! I'll be sure to pay attention when I change my oil.
Thanks for an excellent explanation. I made that mistake once won’t happen again
Value money saving information, thank you.
You’re welcome and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the tip! I just installed the Dorman aluminum housing on a 3.6 and the owner has had it back for over 1 year. Now he says he has an oil leak. I'll be he misplaced the o-ring when he changed his oil.
I was doing my oil change wrong thanks for the help
Another timely tip. Thanks Dave.
How about the 5 O-rings on the oil filter housing that connects to the intake manifold. How offtain do they leak.
It’s good to see more videos 👊🏻
Feels good too! More coming
@@MotorCityMechanic would love to see motor mounts on GC and CKP sensors and cam sensor replacement 👍🏻
Thank you David. When I bought my used 16 JKU, the Jeep desler did the oil change as part of the sale. When I did my next oil change, I took a pic of the cap before I swapped the filter and oring.
Great video.
Great idea! Thanks for the comment and for watching
Good stuff my dude.
Thanks man….nothing you haven’t seen already lol
I just made an oil change video and zoomed in on where to place the o-rjng because I can see how it could get placed wrong.
It’s a simple mistake that can happen to anyone if not fully paying attention
Thanbk you, I had this problem and you video saved me a heart attack.
We all make the mistake at least once. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Can you do a 3.2 V6 jeep Cherokee replacement vid with the engine out like that so I can see what to do?
What would cause all 6 qts to spill out immediately after an oil change (firing up engine again) when oil pan plug and oil filter were torqued to specs?
Great video, thanks for sharing!!!!!!!
So many other oil change videos do not go into this level of detail. It's either right or it's not. Thanks
Thanks a lot. I have been doing my oil change for 7 years for my Wrangler and Chrysler 300, and I've been placing the O ring in the wrong slot for the past 7 years. No wonder sometimes I found the car was missing 1 quart of oil in oil change and sometimes didn't.
I’ve made this mistake on a 2014, put it all the way up on groove by the lip, oil was everywhere. I need help on a transmission sensor code 😟
Would you happen to have a video that shows how to replace the rack and pinion on a 2011 Dodge Grand caravan? Thank you
I don’t but will keep it mind as a possible future video
Is there a dorman oil housing in aluminum for 2014 dodge journey rt yet. Thanks great video
Thanks for the video. Very informative!!
