  • Replacing the 3-5-R Waveplate in a Buick Enclave.
    This was the first time (and hopefully last) that I've ever cracked open this transmission, so I'm learning as I go along in the video. This is the 1st installment where I just change the 3-5-R Waveplate.
    In Part 2, I show how to continue to further disassemble the clutches to get to the other waveplates:
    • Buick Enclave Waveplat...
    This starts with the Engine out of the car. You can watch my Steering Gear replacement how-to to see the start of the engine removal. I will be posting the other engine removal videos soon.
    Thanks for watching!
    UPDATE - 12-30-14 - One of my viewers has told me that they were able to do this without removing the cradle by lowering the engine cradle only about 4". So this is encouraging for all the DIYers. ALSO, I have been informed that my orientation of the sharp side of the wave plate is incorrect in the video - the sharp side should be facing the clutch pack per this link:
    www.autoserviceprofessional.co...
    So, please keep that in mind! FWIW, I have 10K miles on the transmission since this video was made and everything seems OK so far.

    Replaced the 3 5 reverse wave plate and car is now shifting smoothly through all gears. No broken parts and wave plate showed color signs of heat failure. I replaced the plate with the transmission still in the car (08 Chevy Malibu 3.6L). Thanks again for this video! 👍🏼

    2008 Saturn Vue 3.6liter and doing a motor swap so wanted to do this 35R also but you mention the thrust washer fell which requires deeper parts removal. If I wanted to just do the 35r plate should I separate the motor from the trans and tilt vertically so looking down at all parts and allowing gravity to hold that washer in place?

    NOTE: I installed all new motor mounts (including upper "strut" mount) on my 2010. On the trans mount he is working on here...GM gave the mount VERY long threaded studs. In my efforts I found that you cannot remove the old mount without cutting the stud off. I tried lowering the sub frame as much as I could get it to go and without possibly destroying things like the AC lines etc etc. It just seemed that the mount could almost be removed...and the new one almost installed but for the studs not wanting to clear. My fix was to take the new mount and trim down the studs just enough to fit in there. Then once everything is brought back into position there is plenty of threaded stud left for the nut and several threads past the nut. I couldn't figure out why GM felt those studs had to be so long as to have an inch or so past the nut. I used loctite on the threads and all is well thousands of miles later. Only my front mount was broke causing the engine to rise and fall under torque making an odd thump sound on occasion. So I replaced them all. However I will say typically only the front mount goes bad as it's somewhat different than the other basic type mounts...from what I could tell. The rest of my mounts and torque strut appeared very solid whereas the front was totally trashed.

    If you attempt to replace a 3-5-R wave plate you MUST split the case! So much metal debris is generated it WILL clog the filter and you will lose line pressure. I have done hundreds of these. Just a tip if you attempt to do this at home.

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  9 років тому +1

      Brian M. Hi Brian, thanks for the comment. As you can see from the video and my comment below, the waveplate in the video has not yet broken. I replaced this as a preventative measure and if you take on the job before it fails, splitting the cases is unnecessary.

    • @Canvideo
      @Canvideo 7 років тому

      Sometimes I wonder about that. In an automatic transmission, all the oil is filtered before going anywhere. Pulling the pan and changing the filter and maybe adding a magnet, if there isn't one already, is a lot easier than splitting the case as well.

      I will see what I can put together. I wasn't quite as good about the
      video recording when I pulled the engine but I do have some videos. I
      still have some engine timing chain videos for the Enclave that I keep
      meaning to process as well. If I had to do it over again, I'd do it the
      same way, I think... Pulling the engine was a pain, but it was a
      straight forward process. And once it was out, it was sooo much better
      for access. I will try to work on those engine removal videos, but
      please don't hold your breath.. I've been working 13 hour days on a big
      project at work which hasn't been leaving me much 'home-project' time.
      Good luck!

      It's not 'rough' so much as it has a sharper edge. And yes, the sharper edge side should go towards the other clutch plates. The sharp vs not-sharp difference is very subtle, though.

    My mom owns a 2009 Chevy Traverse. Yesterday the car would not go into reverse, and would sometimes not go over 20 mph. I looked into the issue online, and it sounds like the wave plate has had issues with numerous vehicle models. We had it towed to the Chevy dealer today and are hoping for the best. Luckily we are still covered under the "extended warranty" for the well known wave plate issue (if that's what the problem is).

      +skiboyne74 There will probably be a few things that you'll need to disconnect, but if I recall, it appeared that there was considerable service slack in a lot of the major connections (coolant, for example), that it struck me that not too much would need to be disconnected to lower the cradle a significant amount. If you do it, write back and let me know what you ended up needing to do. Good luck!

      Normally when we rebuild them we use the most current parts that GM has updated to not be junk, but that doesn't mean your transmission is invincible, I do this repair pretty much on a daily basis and don't have return customers, so I would assume the newer parts are holding up much better than the original ones.

      correct, from what i've heard the company that GM hired to make and assemble the wave plate, made one side sharp and the other flat and gave the builders no instructions on which side to put in first, so some are ok, others are not. Supposedly they have fixed this on new vehicles but we'll see.

    • @gabeborscheid3828
      @gabeborscheid3828 8 років тому

      Maybe so, but I heard it was due to lack of shot peening the part. The new part should be fixed.

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  8 років тому +1

      +purplexenno This isn't quite accurate. Both old and new parts are stamped, which will always result in one sharp edge and one dull edge. While it is true that GM produced a TSB to inform on the proper orientation for installation, in my opinion, getting this wrong will only result in earlier wear of the adjacent clutch plates - not a fracturing failure that we are familiar with.
      The real difference between the old and new parts from my observations was that the old parts were flame hardened at the inner and outer edges whereas the new parts were case hardened all around. I suspect that the flame hardening was causing excessive brittleness, resulting in the early fatigue failures we experienced and that GM expected a case hardening process to prevent such brittleness. Just my $0.02.

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  7 років тому

      All speeds? Have you tried driving in the manual shift mode? The wave plate problem usually results in error codes and the transmission not working at all in a few gears. Shuddering is usually related to other things. If it gets better in manual shift mode, then it probably is related to the torque converter. The fact that it got worse after a flush suggests that there is a fluid pressure problem that they exacerbated with the backflushing. This could be either the filter getting clogged or they created or made worse a problem in the valve body - or the torque converter needs to be replaced. If it was*just* a problem with the valve body or control circuits, (TEHCM) those *could* be removed without taking out the transmission, but in all likelyhood, you'd want a shop that was going to tear down the transmission to check out the rest of the components anyways. Let me know how it goes!

      I have some videos that I still need to try to edit that gives an overview of the engine removal prep, but chances are I will not get those videos finished in the next few weeks (as much as I wish I could). You do disconnect the brake lines at the connection to the flexible lines in each wheel well. You disconnect the A/C lines at the quick disconnects that go into the firewall. But you do not need to disconnect the power steering lines as the entire steering hydraulic assembly travels with the subframe. The only other advice, if you are going to do it the way I did (with jacks instead of a lift), is that the intake will probably need to come off the engine before you drop it out the bottom because it's hard to get the front end high enough off the ground to clear the engine with the intake still attached. Good luck!

      If all you are planning to work on is the transmission, there is a much simpler way to remove it. You'll need to rent or buy an engine support bar that holds the engine in place while you drop the subframe out from below. Then, you can remove the transmission without removing the whole engine and deal with all the stuff you are asking about.

      +Chris Bruno Hey Chris, so I have my transmission apart and the clutch plate that is on top of my 3-5-R wave plate is severely damaged. I don't know how it could have gotten that way because the wave plate looks great. any thoughts?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  8 років тому

      Usually heat or lack of oil is what ruins clutch packs, but obviously it's impossible to diagnose over messages...(nevermind that I'm not a transmission tech.. Ha!) At this point, you really ought to break down the whole transmission to clean out any debris if the clutch was damaged that badly, though. Good luck!

  • @latunguley

    my question is why is anyone changing this wave plate at all and for what reason or trouble issue? I just bought an 08 enclave and it has never had fluid swapped out or rusted trans lines swapped out. Now with new coolant lines swapped out no longer leaking the new fluid Vl Dextron fluids, its slipping worse then ever? Is this why ???

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  3 роки тому

      OEM 3-5-R waveplates for these transmissions were not durable enough and had known issues fracturing. If they fractured, your transmission was toast, so it was advisable to replace them ahead of that problem if possible. Revised versions had a different heat treat and/or shot peening to improve durability.

    is it possible to do this without removing the whole engine?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  8 років тому +1

      My understanding is that it is possible, though I have not personally done it. Sone folks on rhe the Acadia forum have followed this video without removing the engine, but I'm betting that you will need to lower the engine far enough that some of the electrical harnesses and hoses will need to be disconnected. You may also find the need to remove the radiator to get enough access to the valve body cover. Good luck! If you do it, write back here on how it went!

    Hey Chris, I know this post is crazy old, but I'm having issues with my 2013 AWD Traverse. It seems to be slipping between the 2-3 shift....I took it to the dealer and I believe they thought it was the wave plate, but didn't do a breakdown to verify. Your videos are extremely informative, but I was curious of whether or not this symptom sounds about right for a wave plate and what was your reasoning for doing the timing? I'm still driving the vehicle... Currently I have 145k on it. Also would you call this a weekend or week project? Again, thanks for the info, and great video.

    • @melissarae233
      @melissarae233 5 років тому

      Just thought about it, and it may also be slipping in 5th

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  5 років тому

      Well, the wave plate is used in 3-5-R. So, it could be related. Most people, though, lose reverse and then the transmission gets REALLY bad. I replaced ours before it broke, so we never had any issues. If you're doing this at home without a lift, as I was, it's probably closer to a week project than a weekend project.

  • @JohnSublette

    Just a quick concern... My transmission just died on this exact model with the exact symptoms that require this repair. The TSB (09-07-30-012A) on the issue instructs the repair technician to clean out the transmission thoroughly - due to damaged pieces floating in that space - and replace a few of the additional items that were included in your kit. From your video, I'm thinking that you didn't do all that. Should that be a valid concern of mine? This video replaces about $4000 of cost with just hard work and know how - so it is well worth considering. Thanks for reading! -John.

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  9 років тому +1

      Hi John, my waveplate hadn't failed yet. If the waveplate fails, then yes - all of the waveplate pieces will have spread throughout the transmission. My engine was out for me to change the timing chains and I changed the waveplates as a preventative measure. As you can see, when I remove the old waveplate it is entirely one piece.

    SO WHAT IS THE SYMTOMES??? IN ORDER TO THIS JOB?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  7 років тому

      Hi Paul, if the waveplate has already failed, then the symptoms are that
      it may not go into reverse or will go into a limp home mode when
      driving. If that is the case, then the transmission will need to be
      disassembled and this video may not be a lot of help. If it hasn't yet
      failed, then there won't be any symptoms and this video can help walk
      you through how to change the waveplate before it fails.

      @@SlideruleRacingProducts Hi chris, I have a 2009 gmc acadia that I put it reverse and it barely moves and the rpms go really high. Do you think it might be the waveplate?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  4 роки тому

      @@juanflores4279 It could be. If it doesn't do anything wrong in any of the forward gears, though, it is probably related to something else. If its the waveplate, you will see problems going forward in gears 3 & 5 also and it will be making a lot of noise because parts of the waveplate will be getting ground around inside the transmission.

    for ANYONE with this problem GM has a special policiy on this issue up to 120k miles or something, if your within milaage then call the dealer and ask.

      +Kevin Rogers just to add some clarification. Its 10yr/120k miles. i called my buick dealer and GM customer service and they told me that its only a certain batch that is included in the special adjustment program. even though my vehicle has the problem GM said they will not cover it because its not in the "batch" they also said even if it is included in the special adjustment program they will not cover it unless the transmission actually breaks. im sure i could get a manager or something and jump through hoops but that would mean that i would have to pay this out of pocket and then if they did cover it after jumping through their hoops i would have to fill out forms and wait for a reimbursement. i would rather do it myself for under 200 than have them give me the run around.

      o2civic21 true statement, and straight up dude, i've only pulled one of these transmissions out before and it was a mother fucker, but i was also a lot less experienced then i am now, All i can say is have fun, i would recommend finding a 2 post lift dropping the cradle and resealing the front cover and oil pan if you plan on keeping the car, timing chains you need some tools to do it but is possible without them

      the same thing happened to my Buick, so I took it in and wasn't sure what was wrong with it, because my vehicle was slipping gears turns out it was my wave plate in the transmission worn down and the man said its covered by GM it would have been 1500 dollar fix for them to do it lol praise god I don't have to spend that kinda money.

    just wanted to throw this out there maybe it will help someone, i work for a dealership and do these all day long, there is a special policy on some 07, 08 and 09 that goes 10 yrs or 120,000 miles, gm realized this was a big problem in these years so they added special policy 14404 some have it some dont i would call my gm dealer and ask b4 i spent a large amount on repairs also if it has a special policy and was done out of the normal gm warranty of 100,000 gm issues a refund if it was done and you can prove it was done at a repair facility, check it out if your having this problem, only wave plate failure though, not the tcm, hope it helps

      Can you tell me if this apply's to the 2012 Sonic 6T30 transmission? It is clear GM has a "problem" with these series of transmissions, 6T30,40,45,70, and i believe 75 as well. They have a recall for the input turbine shaft causing limited speed which GM states can result in a crash. The wave plate breaking while the vehicle is in motion also produces the same symptoms as the turbine shaft, however, I don't believe GM acknowledges this.

    I appreciate this video, I have a 2008 Honda Accord Coupe and I can swap out the friken transmission right from the engine bay barely having to take out too many things. The enclave does not need this massive engine or removing the whole engine just to get to the transmission. The problem is dumb people who refuse to call out the American auto companies for the hypocrisy of building high torque 2.4 L diesel engines for the European market and giving us low torque low power monster piece of shit gasoline engines. It's the reason why everyone in the Western hemisphere is switching to Imports as we get the crappy products and they sell their best products over seas. Even Ford is going to be assembling Volkswagen vehicles on contract inside Ford plants lmfao. GM , Ford will be merging soon with other companies and FCA will surely go bust soon again as the Crap Pacifica is a joke and no one is buying that garbage.
