Damn, if all horror movies followed this pattern of creating a movie that takes dark aspects of humanity to create something evil instead of trying to jumpscare us at every corner, the horror movies genre would be a lot better

Exactly, I watched this movie for the first time 2 nights ago and it was nothing like I expected. It was like a true horror movie with how dark and twisted it got. Had to go put my popcorn away at the baby ritual part. The part that creeped me out the most was when the father locked the 3 siblings in that goat pen and the witch was in there eating that goat and shit I was like "oh fuck no get out!"

@@filiparsov4830 It Follows. Although there's a real "monster" there aren't any cheap jump scares where it's the sound effects that tell you when to get scared. Same for Let the Right One In, the original adaptation of the book, not the American one. For similar themes you should look further back in time, because recent horror is just boring cliché crap that looks all the same and tries to make you scared of either technology or old memes. If you haven't seen it, there's the obvious The Shining.

flex luthor He wasn’t. I looked up the movie’s transcript. He mistakes this conversation between William and Katherine:
“KATHERINE I want to be home.
      67.
      WILLIAM
Thou wilt be home by candle-time
      tomorrow.
      KATHERINE In England.
      -
      WILLIAM
      KATHERINE
      Will, I... I also have a confession
      to make:
      WILLIAM is still.
      KATHERINE (CONT’D)
I never wished to be a shrew to
thee. I have become as Job’s wife, I know it, but since Sam, since... My heart has turned to stone.
(KATHERINE swells, but keeps her emotions in check) )
I had dreamed once - twas when I was of Thomasin’s years - that I was with Christ upon earth. I was so very near him and in many tears for the assurance of the pardon of my sins and was so ravished with his love towards me, I thought it far exceeding the affection of the kindest husband. The impression of it was so deep in my heart, when I waked, my pillow had turned to tears.
      -
      WILLIAM
      KATHERINE
      And, since Samuel disappeared, I
have such a sad weakness of faith that I cannot shake it. I cannot see Christ’s help as near. I pray and pray but I cannot . . . I fear I cannot ever feel that same measure of love again.
      WILLIAM (curt)
Thou shalt have of it in heaven.”
What she means is that someone named Job has a wife that’s a shrew, and she has become like that woman, after losing Samuel.
Her confession is that she no longer feels close to god and fears she never will again.

    • @NotAFighterALover16

Job is a man in the Bible. He was tested by God to show his faith. His wife told him to turn away from God and accept that God had left him. Jobs wife is basically a catch all for being a bad wife. Not supporting your husband. Being a shrew and bad tempered with your husband.

I can say that this movie ACTUALLY made me scared. It doesn't have the typical corny jumpscares that most modern day "horror" films have. But rather, this movie is more so of a physiological horror. Everything from the film's score (music soundtrack), from the eerie, grey, dull, harsh atmosphere of the film's setting. Seeing the conditions in which they are living in and how harsh life is for them on top of their inevitable demise, is what I found to be things that stand out to me in this film that make it a TRUE horror movie. If anyone hasn't watched this movie yet, you're missing out! It's a movie well worth your time, trust me.

Do not turn to evil deeds yourself, but never turn from others so long as help is possible. Strange that such a movie can have any message what-so-ever, stranger still that it is a Christian one.

I've always noticed that every young girl, or at least almost every young girl, develops an interest in witchcraft at some point. Even if it's the sparkly Disney version, most young girls want to be magic. They want to mix potions and crush insects and sacrifice lizards (i worked at a preschool, it got weird y'all) and cast spells.
Idk why this is but my opinion is that when you're little and everyone tells u the typical "girls should be clean/quiet/well behaved/dress like this etc." and then u see a witch, a woman capable of turning anyone who tells her that into a frog, that just looks hella attractive

Witchcraft is actually the worship of Nature. Praying in church on Sunday is the same exact thing as casting a spell in a coven, just different names for the practice. Hollywood's depiction of witches only shows the EXTREME spectrum of witches back then. We all practice magick! ✨

Heirachical systems always produce a huge mess of convoluted human relationships around good and evil which more often than not are just semiotics for power. Trying to sort all this out can get even more crazy lol and these movies explore the dangers of teleological thinking. To be honest this wasn't a really in depth explanation. It didn't delve deep enough in the smaller components that viewers witness as the movie progresses. For example, the hare that we see repeatedly throughout the movie, is it a familiar? Or when Caleb discovered the witch in the wood, what did she actually do to him to cause him to die, did she feed on his soul or something? Also the scene where the mother sees the illusions of Caleb and her baby, Caleb asks if she would read him a book, was that just a random question or was it the book of souls, because her behavior completely changed the next morning. I need answers this movie was awesome af, but I need more information.

    • @mirabellaolson6410

The rabbit was a lure by the witch because they were hungry. She turned into a deity just like (vampires turn into bats or rats). So they'd follow it. When it appeared in the barn it was bloody because the white goat was suckled by the witch and that is why the goats blood came out of the teat after that. The woman at the green door was probably the old hag after drinking/bathing in the baby's blood, and she probably made him come to her even tho he was fighting it. Then they did some ritual like poison apple, and ritual and get him to go home and spread the bad vibes to the rest. The mother was a bit off after all her sagas and was mesmerized by the return of the silver cup and seeing the baby, ( which was orchestrated as the power of this entity got stronger with each kill) so the book just added the things together. All in all, the father lost all his respect and power after leading the family away from the group. He lost his dignity and the wife and kids were preying upon him. When he realized he could do nothing to make them happy, he gave up. His mistake of course was teaching them all to embrace sin and not being humble enough to deserve Christ's blessing. That was the frosting on the cake. But that was how many thought back then, and some still do now.

      And, since Samuel disappeared, I

Her 'confession' to her husband is the dream she had as a teenager where she felt an almost sensual love for Christ that she knew she could never have for a husband and that since Samuel's disappearance she'd lost her faith & become (in her words) "a shrew." Nothing is said about Samuel's parentage. Unless I've missed something - I'll watch it again if you'd care to tell me the scene you refer to.

You've given a very literal interpretation of the film (which may very well be the correct one), but I sort of took it to imply that the events and motivations were ambiguous, at best, and open to interpretation. Some of the scenes, as you said, showed the characters misinterpreting or deliberately deceiving each other and seemed to imply that the supernatural elements may have been the result of paranoia and hallucination. The atmosphere created by a combination of zealotry and living on the border between the most remote outpost of Christendom and a dark, primordial forest populated by 'heathens', acts as a crucible for the type of collective madness that leads to historical tragedies like the Salem Witch-trials. Colonial New England is like a physical manifestation of the divide between God and Satan, good and evil, the known and unknown, the secure past and the threatening future, and the precarious position one is in when they skirt that boundary. Also, William mentions the 'blight' that's killing their corn, and one of the interpretations for the mass hysteria around the witch trials of New England is the effects of ergot poisoning; a fungus containing an alkaloid related to LSD that infects cereal grain crops. It can cause hallucinations, obviously, as well as seizures and glossolalia.

    This film is amazing
I love that it shows what puritans thought of witches
While most witches are pagan or neutral on faith im sure some are satanic but the puritans and Christians and Catholics(no offense to anyone) really were radical violent people who were paranoid and killed those of different faiths and beliefs.. Some are still like that but besides that the film really shows the horrific side of like you said religious oppression and depicted horrific witches and ect. And yeah
    I love this film!

Just saw this a Netflix and wondered if you’ve covered it. Yet again you fail to disappoint.

The VVitch ties with John Carpenter's The Thing as my favorite horror film of all time. It's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish and one that I derive something new out of with each viewing.
Speaking of The Thing I've said before that the two films are actually quite similar despite their settings. Both feature a small ensemble cast; both movies take place in a secluded area pretty much cut off from the rest of the world; both movies deal very strongly with the subjects of distrust and paranoia; finally both films deal with an enemy that is relatively unseen in it's true form throughout the movie.
I'm loving this channel. Keep up the good work.

Just a thing i found annoying, is that you keep your audio and the movies audio on different levels. So if i increase the movie audio, your is too loud.

Hey Ni’at (hope I spelled that right), I really love your videos and how much research you put into them. One criticism, if you can call it that, is that the audio of the movie clips/scenes isn’t loud enough and I find myself struggling to hear them. I would like to know if you could bring up the volume a bit. It’s not necessary but would be appreciated.

Sooo this movie is basically just “the way I am” by Eminem. If you keep calling someone something they just end up becoming it

This guy has become one of my favorite directors. His films are so intense and there's so much to mull over and dissect, and so much to think about and discover.

Great movie, love these videos. It's like you're telling a story. Would it be possible if you do one on "The Woman In Black" or "American Psycho", that'd be cool!

Absolutely loved this movie! Different from any horror movie I've ever seen. The ending was so sinister it made my skin crawl.
