💀 UTG DEEP DISCUSSIONS 💀
🎥 Topics of Terror from the Rabbit Hole of Randomness
🍿 The Witch is NIGHTMARE FUEL
🎬 Connor takes on a highly-requested film that enters our Nightmare Fuel series for the first time. 2015's The Witch provided a cultural shift in the folk horror genre, and cemented Anya Taylor-Joy & Robert Eggers in the world of horror. Just how effective is The Witch?

Wouldst thou agree that The Witch is NIGHTMARE FUEL?
I definitely agree that it is terrifying
Excellent horror film.
The scene where Anya Taylor Joy talks to Black Philip/Satan in the barn is nothing short of terrifying and chilling, along with the final scene of her joining the witches at the end
Such a powerful finale!
❤❤
How is that scary?
@@samuelhatlestad6676 The dark imagery, the symbolism and implications…./
@@samuelhatlestad6676 How a mother dies is not as scary as what'll happen to her daughter or what she has to go through in life in an abandoned village after her mother has passed. Implications, not jumpscares for the moment. An untreatable broken bone in your body, not the $1000 lamp your cat broke. Lasting effect > shock value.
Can't wait for Robert Eggers Nosferatu.
I first saw it totally blitzed, overnight at my friend's cabin in the woods. It was a blood-curling experience. Yes! The Witch deserves a spot on your NIGHTMARE FUEL hall of fame.
Such a good movie
What a PERFECT environment to watch this in!
That sounds like the perfect setting. I watched it just before I went to go see a band play live. I enjoyed the concert, but in the back of my mind I was like “omg that movie was so unsettling!”
One of the finest horror films I've ever seen.
And the writing perspective is what does it for me the most; this isn't a tale that's meant to be taken at face value, rather it's presented from the POV of the villagers who exile the family at the beginning. It's basically taking a deep dive into witchcraft grimoires of the middle ages and giving us a series of 'fates' that befall people who stray from the prescribed godliness of the day. As if to say 'this is what Satan's arsenal looks like' as a way to warn people beforehand of making the same mistakes as the hapless and 'prideful' father does. His sins, that look very light to us? Are exactly the kind of thing you'd hammer home the point on in a puritan religious education. The idea that 'white lies are the worst ones because they let the devil inside'.
Reminds me a lot of the fire and brimstone Baptist church my aunt took my cousins to when they were younger. The point was to put you in a perpetual state of fear of Satan as opposed to spending any time doing any of that silly worshipping stuff. There was such a witchfinder general vibe to it because it was so much more concerned on the things you're not supposed to do as opposed to celebrating the joys of living.
Amazing take Hitchens! Witchfinder General is also an incredible watch!
I agree about the cast. Wonderful performances.
The Witch is one of the best horror movies ever and one of the best films of 2015/16
Glad you love it Chase!
@@UnleashTheGhouls thanks
Very effective first directorial effort. Had a similar feel to the original The Wicker Man. You knew something bad was going to happen but didn't know what. Lots of tension in the final 30 minutes or so.
Exactly
Christopher Lee, if he was till alive, would’ve fit like a glove, in this movie.
A brilliant comparison, I have TWM as the finest folk horror film ever made!
While others may complain we didn’t see enough of the actual witch, I personally think the movie didn’t need to display the witch at all. It would have been more terrifying without those scenes, leaving it to the viewer’s imagination.
Unimaginative people will obviously disagree.
"The Art of Slow Burn Horror" dude title well said encapsulates my experience, i was o my sit waiting for whats going to happen, like im constipated lol
Slow Burn movies are the best
Outstanding synopsis of a truly great horror movie.
👍
The most unsettling part to me is Jonas & Mercy & their relationship to Black Phillip. They are super transparent about how often they talk to Black Phillip & what he says to them. Not to mention their songs. So creepy
Thomason was the hero of the story. Catherine and her religion did the damage. The witch was freedom from her families religion. It's a wild movie and it makes me uncomfortable every time I see it
👍💯💯
I've watched this movie once. I cannot bring myself to watch it again, as the last 15-20 minutes had me yelling, "Nope!" Until the credits rolled.
It's certainly one hell of a climax!
I'll say this, I wasn't really scared most of the movie, maybe a bit tense during some suspenseful scenes, but not really frightened.
Then I saw the boots and heard him speak, and I leaned back in my chair as far as I could from the tv and just repeated, "Nope," until the end.
I've seen a lot of horror movies, and very few have managed to chill me to the core like the ending to "The VVitch."

Loved this film and this episode - my suggestion for a future episode would be 'Hell Bound' from Season 5 of Angel. A standout for me because it deals with a top-shelf source of terror, doesn't try to show or visualise the main point of utter dread within the plot - even among all the normalised supernature of the show's world - and instead leaves it to your imagination, aside from one trouser-dampening shot of a very ominous looking gateway to hell but no hint as to what's on the other side. Anchoring the whole thing with Spike's emotional arc. Excellent channel
Thank you for your comment and for the recommendation Rainbow!
I agree with the comment below that this had something of The Wicker Man about it. I think its how in both films the viewer knows from early in the film that the evil is inescapable, they're doomed and we're sat there watching. Man, when Woodward (can't remember his character's name) finally understands what his fate is..scares me cold to even think about it.
Great film. Like The Innocents 1961 the horror isn`t supernatural but mental belief. Thomasin is The Witch
The production design is so beautiful, love love love it. Worth watching just for that. Taylor-Joy is brilliant in this role. She is such an intriguing actor and incredible in everything she's done. I also think it's interesting how witches are often shown as old withered women with aging bodies and faces. The dreaded "hag". As if our bodies become horrifying and disgusting when aged. I don't really see men's aged bodies often portrayed this way.
I absolutely loved this film I do not understand all the criticism of the film well I guess I kind of do but I absolutely salivated over this film and would absolutely salivate over the next one
Wonderful movie . Black Philip is my lord
Favorite genre of horror
YES YES IT DEFINITELY DESERVES THE HALL OF FAME ❤❤❤❤❤my fave movie
Definitely worthy of HOF. It felt almost like a snuff film, like something that we shouldn’t be seeing.
Soooo true
Like something we shouldn’t be seeing.
Perfect description
PERFECT description indeed
Hagazussa is similar to it and could best be described in the "horror in slow motion" genre.
'Horror in Slow Motion' is a FABULOUS term!
Yes
greaat video
Thank you!
I loved this movie, I grew up in New England and loved all the creepy historical stuff and this seemed to perfectly portray it. Thomasin definitely made the right choice, if you can even call it a choice. Great video again, folks.
Thank you Marauder!
Don’t really like these type of horrors so won’t watch it but love to watch the reviews! ❤
i mean i liked the movie but for me it was a one and done. I saw it in theaters and i didnt really have much of a desire to watch it again.
That’s fair. It was still a good movie nonetheless
@@chasehedges6775 yup yup

I can definitely understand that take too!
What's your theory on what's happened to the twins?
I'd say that they were taken by the Witch for more nefarious purposes, perhaps the creation of other magical ointments

Idk I just thought this movie was boring and not scary. I did think the ending was cool though.
Personally didn't like the film, but glad you did.
I thought it was pretty good, tbh
@@chasehedges6775 I agree. It was really well done, and for a single set piece, and a mere 7-8 "talents"? Quite well done. When I realized what the witch did to the baby, I was hooked. Kept hoping the dad would put it together, but he wasn't "that guy". Lol it was a sad tale, but it also gives us a window into the time. People TRULY felt this happened to folks, and who's to say it didn't? Thousands of people went missing during this time period, it was a constant that someone would go to visit a neighbor 30 miles away and find that they were just "gone". Sometimes it looked like they struggled and fought, sometimes it didn't. Who's to say how they met their fate? Indigenous people? Flora/fauna? Maybe something altogether more nefarious.
@@stillcantbesilencedevennow Just a great movie overall
We need more people like you on the internet
That's not a trouble at all Robby! Do you have a film you'd like us to cover as a Nightmare Fuel episode down the line?
anya tayloy joy looked better in this movie than today..
Idk, she looks great in whatever she’s in.
She is absolutely gorgeous ❤❤❤!!!
She was drop dead gorgeous in the northman
Saw you did a review of this, watched it before coming back to this. Man, this was chilling I’ve gone back to back with good horrors. Watched talk to me beforehand and it was terrifying 🥲
