      And he's only 38 years old. I'm so excited to see what's to come.
      Perhaps we are seeing the beginning of a really big one here. He will evolve and change.
      Consider for example Scorsese's 3rd film was Mean Streets.
      What will be Eggers Taxi Driver? King of Comedy? Goodfellas? Silence?
      Of course it will be completely different films. I just love movies and Eggers has real potential. Already knocked out 3 milestones.

      He’s just extremely disciplined and dedicated to the craft. Seems like he’d been in the background working hard on other films, while writing and researching his own stories. Obviously it’s a creative medium, but there’s definitely a real craft and technical element to it that he’s become so brilliant at!

    Fun fact: In The Lighthouse (2019) Robert Pattinson had an unusual approach to psych himself up before emotionally extreme scenes. Director Robert Eggers states, "Sometimes he'd beat himself in the face so bad. Or when it was raining through the cottage roof, Rob was drinking the rainwater in-between takes. He also spun around in circles a lot, that was helpful for him. Or he'd stick his fingers down his throat to make himself gag, stuff like that."

    • @jacobyoung729
      @jacobyoung729 2 роки тому +17

      Absolutely. I hate to say it, but I can't see Eggers ever surpassing it despite his obvious talent because it's such a unique and perfect piece of psychological horror. Here's my analysis without watching the video and seeing Karsten's analysis to bias my viewpoints.
      The Witch was fantastic and an extremely impressive debut feature film, but it's also a film that is much better on rewatch when you fully understand the themes, and while the shots and style displayed Eggers massive potential they didn't show his finest. There's much to analyze, and a great ambiguous ending to interpret. It is like The Lighthouse in most technical and narrative aspects just a little bit lesser in almost every way but that's not saying much.
      The Northman was good but not great; in my opinion it suffered a lot from lack of consistency. I don't think big budget Eggers is the best Eggers, as much of his talent lies behind the camera and in his insanely specific and detailed concepts and settings for his films, which he only needs a medium budget for. The Northman showed his ability to create atmosphere and successfully capture a time era long-past, but the larger story was too straight-forward for him to best show off his strengths and engage the audience. I was never really guessing or analyzing, I was just observing it and even the cinematography wasn't quite as bold or insane as his previous films. And I like straight-forward narratives sometimes- I don't need psychological/unique storytelling to be engaged- but his strengths lay elsewhere. I'm hoping he sticks with a 10-20m budget in the future as I think that's his sweet spot.
      But The Lighthouse... ah man. It is peak modern cinema, and I could analyze it for days but I'll spare it. The setting is PERFECT for Eggers, Defoe and Pattinson are given a flawless script and an atmosphere that leads to career best performances, the audience is constantly at the edge of their toes trying to figure out what's going on and all the while you're looking at some of the best compositions and frames you've ever seen. There's a perfect mix of surreal and straightforward to further the story and make it more interesting, the kind of mix that is present in dreams but almost impossible to accomplish on the screen. The only other film I've seen that does a better job is Mulholland Drive, and that's about it.
      Basically, to make a long story short, I agree. Lol.

Honestly all of his movies are great and this will certainly not be the last we will see or hear of Robert Eggers. This guy is like an artist and a novelist with his film work and I am eager to see what he comes up with next. As much as I'd love to see his own take on The Divine Comedy, I genuinely hope that if he does that then he does a TAKE on it and not a 1:1 recreation, or just something inspired by what happens in it. The actual Divine Comedy is a mess of characters and Christian fanfiction and is genuinely really bad lol
      Not to say it had no impact or that it wasn't good for the time or that it's poorly written, it's just in now times it's pretty meh. Plus trying to make Roman and Greek Gods figures in a Christian setting would be odd for Eggers to attempt.

    Egg has one of the most definitive artistic perspectives I’ve seen from a modern filmmaker in a while, both in story and visuals. I struggle to fully describe his style, but I always come back to something along the lines of brutalized Scandinavian gothic. It’s different from a Fincher or Nolan aesthetic that’s also dark, but not necessarily historically influenced the way Eggers is. I’ve just never seen a filmmaker that so accurately encapsulates “gothic” in the most pure and historical sense of the word and I’m LIVING for it.

    in agreement with a lot of this. i think The Northman is his most accessible without sacrificing almost any of his signature style and decisions, while being maybe the most badass thing I have ever seen. The Witch is an amazing debut with such dedication to the dialect of the time and for me the atmosphere was incredible and so grounded despite all the supernatural stuff (which dont get me wrong, is also amazing). But man, The Lighthouse is something else. It does what both of those movies do so well, and wraps it up in such a distinctly bizarre package. There is totally an argument to be made for each of these being his "best" movie, but The Lighthouse is pretty much perfect to me.
    And regardless, these 3 movies are an amazing unofficial "trilogy". Despite them all being obviously disconnected from each other, they all fit together somehow. With all of them he's covered so many bases and it's truly incredible what he's been able to do in such a short time. The "The" trilogy, if you will.

    The VVitch was soo immersive for me precisely because of it`s "simplicity" and blandness. It made it feel that more realistic for me because of that. It`s one of my fav movies (not just as a horror). At the same time I felt I was "lacking" something with the "LIghthouse"! Cinema is such a wonderful form of art - two people can be huge admirers of the same writer/director but at the same time hold polar opinions and impressions about his work :)
    Btw I re-watched "The Witch" today and after that I watched "The Norseman" which I picked on random and after hearing just negative things about it from ppl. Throughout the movie I was pleasantly surprised to find out I actually enjoy it and just when the credits came out I found out it was written and directed by Eggers!

    A great comparison video would be The Revenant vs The Northman. They’re both about trusted allies killing family. They both consist of long odysseys and, ultimately, difficult battles of vengeance. But an interesting separator is how The Revenant ends with a fight in freezing snow, while The Northman ends with a fight by flaming lava - polar opposite conclusions.

    The Northman & Annette were the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in theaters in a decade. They’re the type of film-epic experience the medium was made for, & it feels exciting to get to experience things like them happening. It feels like the luxury of going to see a new Bergman movie & disliking it.
    I also think that something as big in scope & artistically concise as The Northman won’t happen again soon, nor do I think Eggers has interest in doing more of that kind of thing, so it feels like an exciting detour on his more art house-focused career.

    I didn't like The Lighthouse. Loved the style and the aesthetics and the absolute manic energy, but I needed more story. I know 'style over substance' is a stupid critique like 90% of the time, but I kind of think that's where I land on it. It felt I lot like "oooh that's neat!" over and over again but then it never really added up to anything for me. And like, it was neat! But I haven't really thought about anything beyond the aesthetics of it ever sine
    The Witch is amazing. I love it so much. Love that really intense claustrophia and the way the paranoia overtakes each family member. When cool/weird shit happens in that, it felt earned.
    The Northman is easily my favorite though. The bold aesthetic weirdness, period detail, intimate settings, and go for broke performances of his previous films tethered down by a classic, mythic narrative that drives everything forward. Totally immersive and bone chilling sound design. One of the most memorable film going experiences I've had in recent years

      I mean I get your opinion but I love how some of the details about Thomas’s backstory sort of slowly fade in with time. It’s mostly very implied with a lot up to interpretation sure, but I love that, and my second watch gave me more ideas for what could have been intended by Eggars. Also everything ‘the light’ is intending to symbolize while also driving the story of these two men going mad is just the SHIT

      I share your opinions on The Lighthouse. Great display of acting talent and incredibly unique (at least to modern movies) atmosphere. But I was also asking myself "Okay, how long can this go on?" And just like the 2 characters seemingly stuck in a purgatory - I felt stuck there with them. And not in a good way. Just not my personal taste.

    Your video was so well argued, structured and - even more so: straight to the point without wasting any time of its audience; great stuff in that respect. Also, and that's just a sidenote; I almost fully agree with what you said about these movies.
    I only differ in the immersion factor of "The VVitch"; while the atmosphere was not quite as visually extreme as in "The Lighthouse", the sparse, emotionally cold, almost Spartan look coincided VERY well with the Puritan constrictions of the setting in a strange and alien frontier place at in an emotionally very controlled society with very strict religious norms and at a very superstitious time, and that zeitgeist and sense of alienation came across perfectly in "The VVitch", and my conviction is that the whole visual style did a LOT to carry this all-encompassing tension and emotional/social intensity of a belief system that doesn't tolerate any dissent or non-conformity and is always threatening to turn against even its most integrated members and people with intimate bonds and relations. It's he perfect mood set-up for all the horror that ensues over the course of it's plot.
    On another note, my ONLY difficulty with the movie lies in something you did NOT mention, namely the turn of events/denouement at the end of the story, where the entirely ambiguous tone of the rest of the movie suddenly becomes "explained away" and which felt a little sudden and underwhelming to me, a bit of a anti-climax letdown to end the movie on. Still it kept my attention and immersion right to the end titles.
    So, to sum it up:
    I estimate ALL of Eggers movies masterpieces in their own right, but agree with you that "The Lighthouse" left the strongest impression on me.
    Thanks for sharing your sentiments, analysis and talking points!

    Personally I would agree with The Lighthouse being my favorite and being the best out of the three films Eggers has done. The Northman has some of my favorite visuals and action of all time already, but as immersed as I was while watching The Northman, the experience I had whilst watching The Lighthouse was the most memorable theater going experience I ever had. It was so intense and gripping and as soon as that foghorn blared as I was instantaneously thrown into the world and enjoyed every second of it. I feel like Eggers is a master at making people’s jaw drop. With all of his films there is just so many moments where you are like “what the fuck? Did that just happen?” And I love that!

    To me, The Witch and The Lighthouse are truly gems! The Northman... mmm, I don't know man. I don't think this movie sustains itself storytelling wise as firm as his previous gems do. A lot of the main plot points are resolved through an informative dialogue rather than a cinematic proposal -a department which Eggers paradoxically tends to stand out- full of clichés, over the top acting, and sometimes clumsy fight scenes.

    • @okapibibi
      @okapibibi 2 роки тому

      @@a.t.3192 I think it might be more conventional than the previous two, which were more buttfuck insane, but The Northman still has that unique style of Robert. That weird father-and-son ritual at the start, the witch, the talking head, the dead warrior hallucination, the limbs nailed to the house. They all fit perfectly and reasonable with the myth of Amleth and the general Norse mythology, and still carried the weirdness of him. I, for one, never expected a director to include such things in a Viking movie! Most people tend to see the Vikings as just brutes and would put conventional themes of war in movies about them. Robert said he struggled with the action genre a lot, and maybe he won't attempt it again, or at least not one as big as this one, but I'm glad he is trying out new types of stories in different genres. Learning and trying new things is how masters improve their craft and stay on top!
