      I just saw The Witch for the first time tonight. Great film work. Good story telling. Incredible acting. I'm not a horror movie guy, but this was like reading a book where a lot of it was left to suggestion.

    Also, the names have meaning. Samuel means 'God has heard.' Interestingly, once he 'vanishes,' all the family's prayers are ignored.

      I looked up Caleb's name and one of the meanings is 'all of heart' or something like that. Caleb was basically the heart of the family who tried to keep the peace but once he died, everything went further downhill.

    Don’t forget Caleb coughing up a whole damn apple. It recalls him covering for the dad and saying that he thought he saw an apple tree. It also has edenic imagery but

    Thank you! So many of the, “explained” videos don’t actually do any research or analysis, they just recount the events of the film like a boring summary. You’re the first person I’ve seen actually make the connection to the book of Job and interpret difficult scenes like the crow in a way that makes some semblance of sense. Well done!

    I have actually watched this years ago but i was so shocked by how immersed I got into it that my brain blocked it I think. Only after seeing your commentary on The Lighthouse I searched for movies from the same director and re-watched this. I've realized I've seen it before only half-way but continued to watch it nevertheless. Sorry for the long post but here is my take on it:
    I see Thomasin's final decision and the drift away from God as a more pragmatic and straightforward, let's say, behavior. She's the most faithful one, she does all her chores, yet when things start to go bad she is being blamed for each and every thing. She still keeps her faith and tries to make up for all the things that are going wrong (even the ones that are not really 100% her fault). Things are going from bad to worse and from her perspective her actions and her prayers are not achieving anything at all.
    At the end after her whole family is dead, in a desperate attempt to make sens of it all, she orders the goat to speak. She is astonished by the response and the devil's offer is, from her point of view, the best if not the only one she can accept so she does accept it instantly and without hesitation. After all, what did all her prayers and hard work achieve, where was God in her world? Nowhere, so naturally she's taking what's being offered on the table, the only offer which, considering the suffering she's been through, doesn't seem so bad after all: eternal nourishment (butter), beauty (the dress), and fun(seeing the world) is more than she would have hoped for anyways.

      I love this interpretation! I completely agree with what you’re saying even though it wasn’t in my video. The rewards of virtue are so much more long-term and indirect, and sometimes may not even happen. The rewards of sin are so much more immediate and direct, it’s so much easier to take that path. That you for this input, I love it! And thank you for watching!!

    Love what you said about the dad drowning in his pride. I was literally thinking everytime he chopped the wood this guy thinks he's the man while choppin but meanwhile his family is starving lol. Then later black phillip kills him and all the unchopped wood comes pouring down on top of him.. possibly my favourite little detail from the movie. That or the silver cup reappearing right before the crow pecking scene 🤘

    I have a theory that the whole time Thomasin was indeed a witch... But since the film is told from her perspective, you are supposed to like her and feel bad for her. Here's why I think this, and it's just my opinion: 1. She was the most reluctant to leave the community, which to me was a strong reason to turn against her family. 2. At the beginning, when she's praying, she outright states that she deserves hellfire. 3. Just before he gets abducted, Sam's face changes and looks like he's scared, as if Thomasin was about to do something bad, when right before that he was laughing. 4. She likes to stare at the forest, almost longingly, as we can see in a couple of scenes. 5. The fact that her hands were bloody after the twins went missing leaves me guessing. I think the two dead white goats symbolize the kids' deaths as well. But again, why did she have blood on her hands? It also looked like she was holding their clothes. 6. Then there's Caleb, who keeps peeking at Thomasin's breasts, and the witch who seduces him, as mentioned in the video, accentuates that specific part of her body... To me, that's a metaphor. 7. And last, everytime Thomasin interacts with an animal in any way, something bad or eerie happens: the egg, the white goat's blood, the horse going away to never be seen again... I would have liked the movie more if that was the case, because I find it a little off, but well

    Missed the target but hit the tree.
    The strict adherence to religion is not what led to the downfall of this family. It was the sin of pride and contempt for others that led them to be vulnerable to Satan. The Devil was able to infiltrate this family because their piousness was a mask. Sin is acceptable to God through humility and empathy. Contrition leads to salvation, not the pursuit of perfection. This is what Christ taught us.
    Your overall opinion is not wrong, per se, but just too simple and sectarian. You don't quite grasp the spiritual nature of these types of stories.
    PS: Otherwise your breakdown of the film was very well done. I enjoyed it.

    Here, i propose an "alternative" reading. The main theme is isolation from society. By not having the corrective influences of other people, people outside of the family, they only get an understanding of themselves from pure introspection. They do not have the perspective of beeing seen by others. So they all fall into an endless void, wich is the soul of a social being, not living in a society. The father can't compare his fatherhood to other fathers, where he could realize, that he may not be the best father, but also not the worst. Same with the adolescent girl, boy, the mother and so on. It is interesting, that all the "supernatural" things they experience, alongside with the health issues, can clearly be caused by malnutrition and fungal poisoning like ergot. ( at 2:47 you see the rotten corn) In the village, these threats would be less severe. There is a saying: The eye, that tries to look at it self, does not see anything.

      @@lucasblue20 Well, I am quite surprised it has become such a phenomenon. It is quite scary BTW, I work in a middle school and we have been warned to stay vigilant. But, on the other hand, I can understand why it is a little korean curiosity. K-dramas are my "péché mignon " : the sweet innocence, childishness, somehow mellow mood, traditional values and those food scenes (BTW, meals and food, drinking together, etc. has a meaning of kindly social interactions in k dramas)! Squid game is a new kind of show that follows the trail of Bong Joon-ho's Parasite and Snowpiercer : a piercing critique on social hierarchy (even though in late korean shows it is more and more put into question), more violent and the unthinkable ! : soft nude and sex scenes, even meals and drinks are somehow symbolic of division and hate. I think Squid game is a cornerstone for korean shows in that regard. As Japanese and Thai shows, they would become much more reflective and morally fluid

  • @ArtByEmilyHare

    I loved this movie and watched it very literally so I had different feelings about what it meant or where it should have gone. The horror and terror for me was this young girl being accused of being something she was not, something completely imagined. If i'd made it it would have been about this alone (and there'd not have been actual supernatural effects like floating witches etc). Just the whole process of being so alone, so far away from anyone and surrounded by a family who are saying you are a witch which doesn't exist. This happened to women in real life and that someone could be destroyed for this in the worst way possible is more filled with horror (to me) than making it about supernatural things like in this film. I think because the idea of being accused of something like this and being helpless against it was so strong when i was watching it - when it actually didn't go in that direction I felt frustrated! I hope I explained myself well, it's a bit rambled I know.
    I love the fact all the lighting is natural in this, it's very subtle and full of atmosphere. I am a big fan of Eggers and look forward to his next work (although the northman does look a bit cheesy from the trailers!).
    I love your video essays, they're brilliant!

    • @raafikilevraienv2v
      @raafikilevraienv2v 2 роки тому +4

      I think there's something true in that interpretation. Look at it this way, her family was so sure that she was being a witch AKA the bad one, while they, were good christians AKA good people, that they made out of an innocent woman a true horror, a real witch. They basically created the witch in her through their belief. And while she never once was, she still became one because of her parents whole inside conflict, biases, way of thinking and true sins they behold. If they did not and truely kept faith, while being good and virtuous to her, not let themselves be tempted and so on, they all wouldn't have faced this entire horror they went through = their daughters would have never became (so never been) a witch. The northman was amazing btw and I got myself a new great appreciation of one new talented movie maker. Still need to watch the lighthouse tho.
      Amazing channel btw.

      @ArtByEmilyHare 2 роки тому

      @@raafikilevraienv2v Yeah that is a good point, that she was maybe made that way by her family, although that doesn't seem to me to be what the directors idea was (but I haven't read anything about him talking about it!). Great movie anyway, The Lighthouse is my favourite of the three, it's extraordinary, The Northman being the least strong but still very engaging.

    • @xombie0078
      @xombie0078 Рік тому +2

      On my first viewing of this movie, I too thought that whatever supernatural images that were shown here were perhaps imagined by the various family members who felt as if they were under the influence of some witch that's really not there, so as to not blame themselves for their own sins. Beginning with the kidnapping and kiIIing of the baby (done by one of the parents so there is one less mouth to feed), the enchantment of Caleb (as he feels aroused by his sister Thomasin), the attack on the father (really carried out by Thomasin, but in her mind done by the goat who is the witch in disguise), and finally the confrontation of Thomasin and her mother which leads to the latter's demise as well. They were all in a desperate situation being cast out from town and thereby forced to live by themselves at the edge of the woods. Their crops were not growing, and there doesn't seem to be much game either except for that brown hare. So they committed these sins out of desperation and frustration, but in their own minds imagining that they had been bewitched when doing so.
      But then I later realized that there is too much to ignore, as the witch used the baby meat to smear all over herself to be able to fly off towards the moon, Caleb's mouth was magically sealed shut with a (rotten) apple inside, the twins disappearing after being spotted by the naked old witch who was doing God knows what to the farm goats, etc. So yeah, the supernatural things we saw here are indeed real... but I definitely understand the horrific psychological aspect of being wrongly accused, alone and helpless as well.

    • @ArtByEmilyHare
      @ArtByEmilyHare Рік тому +1

      @@xombie0078 that's a really great break down thank you. I love how there are so many ways to view this film. I think one of the things that bounced me out of it other than the direction they went with true supernatural, was the boy's vision of the 'sexy' witch in the red cape, who to me, looked too modern, of our world (big lips, tits etc) rather than of the time, does that make sense? But then the same has happened in Northman as Kidman's plastic surgery bounced me out of the period too. Those kinds of details really spoil period pieces for me and I always wonder at the decision to have heavily botoxed/filled actresses/actors in movies like this. (sorry, complete tangent there!)

    • @xombie0078
      @xombie0078 Рік тому +2

      @@ArtByEmilyHare Yes, I definitely thought that they overdid it as well with the imagery of the sexy witch in the middle of the woods with seemingly modern enhanced features (lol), but I understand why they did it. They wanted her to look especially enticing to young Caleb who (although still pre-pubescent) was starting to notice these features on the opposite sex, namely his sister Thomasine. So from his perspective, the witch appeared to him as absolutely irresistible, but then the camera angle changes to show the audience the hideous gnarled arm of the witch embracing him, so as to let us know what she really must look like.
      As for The Northman, I've not seen it yet, nor have I seen The Lighthouse, but I plan to watch them both very soon. I'm very impressed with Robert Houston Eggers' work.

    Just finished watching and I feel thoroughly depress by the end. Thomasin was stripped of all her agency from both her family and the devil. Her parents would pawn her off because of her gender and the devil cut off all her bonds. By the end, all she could've chosen is to be starved to death or give in. Even her freedom in the end is a lie.

    it's a 2015 release, maybe give it a minute before declaring it a classic. Standing the test of time is a big part of something being bestowed with the label classic.

      Yeah don't take my use of the word "classic" too seriously in this video series title. The majority of them are actual classics, and the more recent ones are more potential classics I'd say

    William and his wife and caleb maintained their faith til the end - sin doesnt mean loss of faith. Ever heard of Jesus? They still go to heaven. The other children idk. Thomasin certainly wont since she signed his book. When everything was gone she turned to the devil not God. The devil didnt want to teach a lesson - he doesnt teach - he comes to steal, kill, destroy and that’s what he did in this story. in obtaining thomasin he got a soul and another person to do his bidding.

    In Job GOD allows the devil to test him because GOD knows he will come out on top leading to the theory "GOD wont give us anything we can't handle."

    My question is was she born a witch? The devil is obviously influencing her but the baby disappeared how? The twins just teleported? She had to of done those things herself.

    This movie is good but no realistic at all ….they all prayed for forgiveness to Jesus Christ and so in real life Jesus would forgive them …I didn’t like how the movie acts like if Jesus wouldn’t forgive them and they were damned because of their sin …Jesus is the redeemer.
