Hi David, thanks so much for the video. It is really helpful! I noticed that at 6:30 you mention that there must always be a date included with the author surname in parentheses, but then at 7:29 there is an example where the date is not included in parentheses with the author names. Just wondering if you could clarify that. Thanks!
When the name of the author is part of the narrative and appears outside of parentheses, after the first citation in each paragraph you need not include the year in subsequent nonparenthetical citations as long as the study cannot be confused with other studies in the article (see p. 174 in the sixth edition of the Publication Manual).
Hello and thanks so much for your quick response! I am wondering about "(Ice et al.)" at the end of the first paragraph in your example- why is there no date included in the brackets with the author names?
The date for that publication had already been given. Keep in mind that APA does not publish rules. It publishes guidelines for academic journals. Journal editors, universities, professors, etc. can adapt those guidelines as they wish. For my audience, the date for the Ice source had already been established and there was no other source with that author's name. Therefore I deemed it unnecessary.
May I kindly check if I could state that a paragraph was cited from an author by doing this Sam states that the universe is massive. Till date, scientists have yet to discover the limits of the universe. NASA continues to conduct space probe missions to help us understand our universe better (2010). I split the name of author and place it at the beginning, and end the paragraph with the year of that article Would that he possible ?
Aaron--it goes like this: Samuelson (2010) states that the universe is massive. The author points out that scientists have yet to discover the limits of the universe, and NASA continues to conduct space probe missions to help us understand our universe better (pp. 12-17). Use only last names in APA.
Hi David! Thank you for your videos it did help me a lot. How will I cite a citation within the article, and I want to cite it too... in the article it was written: Furthermore, incivility is of an international importance.......... on a y frequent relatively frequent basis (Schilpzand et al 2016). I want to do is rephrase that it. but I don't know how to cite it since the author also cite it from other author. Thank you
Hot--This is called a "source within a source" citation and is very common. You give credit to the original author but cite the author in whose work you found the original. Like this: According to Ackerman, “Dogs come in all sizes and some are lazier than others” (as cited in Smith, 2001, p. 6). Ackerman is the original source that you found in Smith. On the References page, you site only Smith.
Hello Mr. Taylor, When notating the citation in an essay and the authors have the same last name, do you put the 1st initial for only one of the authors or both if it has the same year of publication?
David Taylor thank you! What is auther A.A? Could you do a video in video citations for APA please i dont fully understand how it works. it works better if i hear it explained than seeing it. I need this for school so it critical i understand it. This is new to me and the teacher gave us an assignment without thoroughly explaining APA
The Author, A.A. refers to the creator's name and initials--his/her screen name. (year, month day) refers to when the video was uploaded. Always use [Video file]. So the citation for the video above would be: Taylor, D. (2017, Sept. 11). APA in-text citation tips. [Video file]. Retrieved from ua-cam.com/video/rlw0cFOafLI/v-deo.html
David Taylor thanks for the help good sir! Can you still upload a video explaining youtube citations or other citations that purdue owl doesnt explain 😎

Ulett, you are correct. It looks like this:

or
(Dawson, J., 1986; Dawson, T., 1986)
