Student papers do not need a running head! They did in older editions of APA Style, but the 7th Edition removed that requirement for students. Professional papers (like those being submitted for publication) do need a running head. But the average high school or college student paper does not need one anymore.
Hi! What about word count? My prof told me to include it in my last reports feedback, but I'm not sure where to put it? Currently I'm working on an extended report. Thank you for all the other help :)
Thank you for this video. I am 53 years old and doing some courses. I was relying on my kids for help. One day on the last day of submission they refused to help me .I cried a lot and decided i will never ask for help from them. I submittted my assignment late but i did it myself after seeing your videos.
This helped. I did a paragraph for the abstract page and shaking my head, with this UA-cam video, it made me realize I didn't need it so I'm rewriting it to make it my conclusion paragraph.
As I am entering my 2nd semester in my Master's program this video is a lifesaver! It is detailed and thorough and I feel like it helped me step my writing game up. Thank you!
My professor brought me to this video a few semesters ago and I've found myself revisiting it many times! Thank you. This is very informative and helpful.
Thanks Dr Forlenza. Your video about APA 7th edition formatting for students really helped me.I didn' know much about this. The video is simple and easily understandable for students like me.Thank you and God bless you..
First year in university, writing and reading is my hobby last couple of years ago I started writing but never heard about APA. But now we use APA for writing and this videos helped us all my fellow students in my class.
Thank you, Sam! The APA 7th edition was not clear about spacing after the byline. You cleared it up and I really appreciate you. I am subscribed see you for my next question.
Thank you for posting these. I was getting ready to make videos for my students when I found yours. You do a fantastic job of clearly explaining how to perform each step.
I like how thorough this is. There are bits and pieces everywhere on APA or every time they update it and having one source as a go to is a life saver.
Thanks for this: I set up my document as I watched :) I have one thought: perhaps you could finish by showing how to save the document as a word template? That way, it could be re-opened, rather than re-created each time.
Scoring maximum points requires honing skills on other elements like thesis statement development, transition sentences and citations which all come in handy in research and essay work. My capabilities have improved a great deal.
May I asked if there are going to be a future videos about references, in-text citations, and how to set the Appendix or table as APA format. I love your video!
This is probably a dumb question but... On the title page in the "Department of" section before the school, are you supposed to put your major or does it simply depend on the course? Like, if it's a paper for English class but your major is Mathematics do you still put "Department of English" or "Mathematics"? Just curious and I don't wanna look dumb when I turn it in lol
Do I suppose to write an Introduction and Conclusion? Because some people said that in the main body, there must be an introduction and conclusion. Please answer me!
If you're referring to writing a cover letter or application statement, you can just write it...I doubt any program is going to care all that much about citation style for an essay of that nature. If the program is asking for APA style, go with professional to err on the side of caution.
@@APAStylebySam Thank you. The program I am applying to is looking for a two paged, single spaced, writing sample so I was undecided if I need headings or subheadings.
Question: On the title page where the instructor's name is written, do I have to fully write out the word professor like this: Professor Soto OR can I abbreviate professor like this: Prof. Soto ????
Ask your professor. Or just pick one and see what your professor says- I doubt that minor detail will hurt your grade if you guess wrongly. (After all, whichever you choose, it will be correctly formatted!)

You said that the paragraph symbol wont appear when you print it but what about if you're sending it via email? Im asking because I have to send it to my professor but I will not be printing it.
If your professor is viewing it electronically, it will depend on their own settings. They can turn the symbols on/off as they see fit, just as you can. So in other words, don't worry about it.
thank you for posting the APA paper format, I am struggling with drawing a table which is in nine vertical columns by two rows. is there any help with this situation?
A table with 9 columns sounds like a lot to fit on one page. I'd use a Next Page Section Break at the end of your paper and switch the page orientation to Landscape to give yourself more room.
Hello Samuel, thank you for making this video! I just got a NO-GO for my student paper because I had a page number on my front page and because I had the words "Running head" on the front page... Can you tell me if this is something that is wrong?
@@APAStylebySam @Dylan ...and often students are asked to leave the page number off the title page, even though the page numbering should begin with the title page! Fortunately, if you use the top menu bar in Microsoft Word (Insert>Page Numbers), the little dialog box includes a checkbox saying "Show number on first page" -this is checked by default, but if you take a moment to notice it and uncheck it, your problem is solved, Dylan! Instant page-number compliance with no fuss. (I am using Word 16.43 for Mac; your dialog box options may vary, but the ability to omit page numbers on the first page of any section will be in the Page Numbers settings somewhere)
Here's my question to anyone willing to answer.... I have a professor asking for footnotes when our papers are only required to go over our textbook (exploring a case in the book or defining a term from the book), and have a maximum of 250 words (1 page). Regardless of this fact, should I use a footnote or in-text citation for the paper? Or do I use both, and how would I use both? I understand how to add the footnote list at the end, but I'm struggling with how they work within the main body of the paper.
APA Style does not recommend the use of footnotes. (The Purdue OWL has examples of how to use them though, so check there). I'd ask your professor what their preference is on in-text citations.
I have a suggestion, maybe there should be either a couple of lessons on APA 7 or a whole term teaching it instead of professors assume we know how to write the blasted thing.
There is a class on it depending on the university. The problem is when the American Psychological Association decides to change the format. You kind of just have to miss points on it on one assignment and learn from it.
Thank you for posting the APA formatting which was a problem that I was having. Thanks to your video I was able to see how it is supposed to be done and now I know how to set up for the APA style of writing. Oh? I though it did. Thank you so much for this video.
Does this apply for graduate students too? Or is a running head required
In all my life I don't think I have encountered such an aggravating writing format.

Headings look stupid too
It gets easier as you get used to it. I remember the first time, I practically pulled my hair out.
I actually prefer APA. Chicago format is also okay, but I really don't like MLA (probably because I've rarely used it)
I LOVE MLA it’s so easy

What is a reliable citation generator for APA 7th edition?
Citations are easy, the references can be a pain because some textual sources forget to put certain components.

Excellent presentation, Dr. Forlenza! Are you using the APA template in MS Word for this tutorial?
No I'm not using any pre-made templates.
Can the title be bigger in size than other writings on the title page?
APA Style recommends keeping it the same size as other text, though I doubt it matters all that much for a student paper.
Thank you!! Much Appreciated

You should use numerals when writing about functions/fractions, so you could write "reported 5 out of 10 on a pain scale" or something similar.
Thank you so..much
Thank you.
Are the only differences between a Student paper and a Professional paper the running header and the title page?
Basically yes. Professional papers probably have more back matter, too.

Running head? Thank you
Not in the 7th Edition. That's only for professional papers.
I knew it was only a matter of time before APA would scrap the running head.
It was so pointless.
Thank you
I realized that you did submit a running head.....is this not necessary in the 7th edition?.....I just received my manual.
Not anymore for students.

Not specified. I'd put it on its own line under your name.

Abstracts aren't necessary for student papers unless required by your instructor.
