I love how frequently Dave checks in with Shane throughout the song... and Dave's face when Shane starts the solo at the end. I SOBBED as I watched that concert. It was a powerful, powerful experience.
It looked like Taylor entered Shane’s body and took over. I mean, look at Shane’s face near the end as he looks at Dave. Look at the awe in Dave’s face. Taylor was there. Amazing.
It's actually how they ensured everything stayed on beat between vocals and his drumming, at the end though that was pure admiration from a man whose watched this kid grow since he was a baby.
Dave Grohl is Godfather to Shane Hawkins. 💕 I love the “Ziggy Stardust” David Bowie cover done by NHC ( Navarro, Hawkins, Cheney) live at The Troubadour, Shane Hawkins sits in on drums, sharing the stage with his father Taylor Hawkins~ RIP~♥️🥲 It’s a gem to see father and son performing. Taylor is so proud of Shane! ♥️ Shane Hawkins is a phenomenal drummer already, can’t wait to see what the future will be for him, condolences to the Hawkins family. ♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏🙏
With that hair, and that mini-solo at end..my first thought that came to mind was.. *"Holy fuck😮..there's Animal, if they ever do a live action ~Teeth and the Electric Mayhem~."*
He kissed his dad’s kit. That got me. It’s incredible what we can do in the face of enormous grief. When Dave looked at him at the end…..what a moment.
This guy has no idea let alone where it was. I was there at the front of the stage for this. I bet he didn't even realise at one point Dave sang there goes my Taylor! This guy has no idea!!!
Shane’s just shy of 16. Violet turned 16 early this year. It always gives me chills to watch this. Dave introduced him by saying he didn’t know any who hit the drums harder. Imagine doing that in front of 80k people and a host of legendary drummers.
@@seelenwinter6662 ua-cam.com/video/w7sPkXuTtBM/v-deo.html watch how he goes from one song to the other... He's got his live shit together, this gives it away! I think Shane is really getting his practice in playing together with his mates
😭💭 At 8:48 when Shane kisses his dad's drums.. Instant tears! And the way Dave looks at Shane throughout the whole song as if to say.. It's ok buddy, I'm right here with you..is so precious and heartwarming❤❤❤💔💔💔
Three of my favorite things about this video (other than Shane's performance) is the fatherly concern. Dave bringing Shane back into time when he was rushing (as would be expected at that age and under the circumstances), Dave being surprised when he throws in the solo, and Omar Hakim watching over him behind the drum risers.
@@aicram62 Yeah, it wasn't anything crazy, but being a drummer myself I picked up on it. Like I mentioned, totally understandable given all the different factors.
Omar Hakim is sitting at the other drum kit next to Shane, and was ready to take over if the kid broke down and couldn't continue. Obviously that wasn't necessary.
Every time I watch this, over 30 now, I think how Shane looks like he's beating the angst and hatred he must feel at life for having lost his dad. "F you life!! I'm playing!!"
We lost my husband and have 4 sons and 1 daughter. I bought my son's a heavy bag to help express the pain and anger and see that same look on their faces.
Could be the best version of this song I’ve ever heard. Shane is so together and humble for a 16 y/o it’s awe inspiring, he handles the moment and just makes it wonderful.
Aside from his drum skills, Shane is just first class. He ran over and gave wolfie van halen the biggest hug, because Wolf said he wasnt sure if he could make it through playing classic VH, without his dad and Shane was there for the support and thanking him. The Foos sat, as a family watching Violet sing, and Shane was cheering her on, while looking after his little sisters. He has his dad's generous heart, looking after others. Very cathartic night. Loved seeing a tribe of the worlds best drummers, sitting behind his kit for this.
holy shit. that kid just blew every other drummer off that stage. in a time where dave and carey are trying to play with rush this kid just crushed it!
I think it’s incredible that Omar Hakim who played with DAVID BOWIE of all people is sitting behind Shane to his right just enraptured with the kids playing. As a (former) guitar player, Shane’s an incredible drummer for 16.
Im a grown man and not ashamed to admit my first time watching this brought me to full on tears. What a powerful moment, Dave Grohl is such an awesome dude.
Dave Grohl is an American Treasure. Played in one of the greatest bands and fronts another great band. The loss of his best friend has got to be devestating.
He was phenomena. I've watched this easily a 100 times. Dave checking on him. Expect big things from this young man, if he chooses. A wonderful celebration of Taylor. RIP
Oh my. This just stabs you right in the heart - good and bad. Such a talented kid. I was crying and smiling at the same time. My favourite song from the Foos. ❤
So glad I was there to see this live, and to answer your question ‘how did Dave Grohl keep it together’ the answer is he didn’t. He broke down, understandably, whilst performing Times Like These earlier in the show.
Both Roger and Rufus Taylor played at this (and the LA)concert too. Such a connection… Rufus has been supporting and mentoring Shane.. much like Roger supported and mentored Taylor. It was so amazing to watch them… such a feeling of family. All watching out for each other. I know Dave has so many options for a replacement for Taylor (not that he can ever really be replaced)… but I hope Rufus is somewhere in the mix. Oh.. and BTW - if you want to watch a comparable tribute concert.. check out the 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert.. EVERYONE who was ANYONE in the 70s and 80s, and early 90s sang - including David Bowie!! Thanks as always for all your great comments regarding this performance!!
I was there and I dont think there was a dry eye in the stadium of 90,000 people. Shane did his Dad more than proud. The energy was electric. Gives me goosebumps still to watch this. And Dave did break down a couple of times (made us all cry) but this was the second to last song of a 6 hour concert so I guess he was composed by then and staying strong for Shane.
It's been months since I first watched this performance and I'm still in awe watching Shane, all that raw emotion coming out. When he leans forward and kisses his father's drum near the end it makes me ugly cry.
You can see Violet Grohl's progression starting with her cover of Adele's "When We Were Young" (San Francisco benefit concert), to X's "Nausea" (studio set), and Amy Winehouse's "Take The Box" (Dave's Hanukkah session from last Dec.). Roughly at 12, 14 and 16 years old.
I flew from Wanaka, NZ to be there and pay my respects to a group of guys I've followed and listened to for 30 years, and it was ELECTRIC! The whole concert: starting with Liam G and finishing with this. Took my kids as this was their Live Aid. It was a chance to share something special with them!! Thank God for DG and the Foos.
Thank you Andrew I simply cant watch this enough. With a lump in my throat I watch as this heart broken young man CRUSH IT!!! Talent oozes out of Shane and I'm certain we will all be hearing from him in the near future.
After watching it more than 10 times, I still have to hold back my tears! I don’t how Dave and the band could hold it together but I don’t know how Taylor’s son could play this song! You can see and hear all his pain and his emotion saying goodbye to his hero! It’s so moving, I can’t find words! Biggest respect
Dave played with every artist. He lost it during the first Foos song, started sobbing and had to get himself together during Time like this... the part where Taylor famously, bailed Dave out in concert, when he was losing his voice. Grohl is a national treasure. And lets hear it for Pat Smear. Always there for hug, teary eyed watching Violet, just amazing guys, who get what rock is about. Rufus Taylor would be the best fit for a new drummer, if and when....
Aside from this outstanding performance of "My Hero", some highlights for me were the Queen section, Wolfgang Van Halen, Justin Hawkins, Dave Grohl and Josh Freese playing "Hot For Teacher" and the Rush section.. with Dave on drums!!.. playing 2112 overture, Working Man and YYZ!! Amazing!!
Wolfgang Van Halen joined Van Halen when he was a teenager. So it wouldn't be out of line to think how well Shane could do. He's only 16 and whatever avenue Shane decides to pursue he will knock it out of the park.
Dave has such a broken look during the intro, but he has the heart of a lion to keep going...much respect to him, and Shane looked like his Dad back there, all hair, elbows, and sticks flying!
I remember seeing this on the live stream and on that song I always looked at Shane when they said there goes my hero and I said yup, Shane is my hero that day, never thought I would say that about a kid. I truly believe I am not the only one that thought the same thing that day. Dave checking on him really shows the love they all have for family in the band. He hit the drums so hard that his Dad could hear him in Heaven.
This is such a beautiful thing it makes me laugh and cry mostly cry but Shane is just such a positive light despite everything is just so positive and I don’t know if that’s the right word for it it was just such a beautiful thing to watch them have each other’s backs and celebrate Taylor’s life and legacy and go through all of this together in this exact way this was the perfect way to do it I think
I’m currently learning this song. I’m at 90% speed and am working to close that last 10%. It’s also really helped my drumming. Totally also agree about Shane - what a massively talented kid.

thanks for doing this reaction...

everyone of those beats, is pain of losing his dad.

I have a 2nd cousin in New Zealand. I hope to visit her one day.
DO IT
Shane’s been his dad’s understudy, drumming in the wings since a wee lad...

go to Chevy Metal. Taylor's old band Shane kills it. He should be Foo's drummer
