He kissed his dad’s kit. That got me. It’s incredible what we can do in the face of enormous grief. When Dave looked at him at the end…..what a moment.
I love how frequently Dave checks in with Shane throughout the song... and Dave's face when Shane starts the solo at the end. I SOBBED as I watched that concert. It was a powerful, powerful experience.
It looked like Taylor entered Shane’s body and took over. I mean, look at Shane’s face near the end as he looks at Dave. Look at the awe in Dave’s face. Taylor was there. Amazing.
It's actually how they ensured everything stayed on beat between vocals and his drumming, at the end though that was pure admiration from a man whose watched this kid grow since he was a baby.
Dave Grohl is Godfather to Shane Hawkins. 💕
I love the “Ziggy Stardust” David Bowie cover done by NHC ( Navarro, Hawkins, Cheney) live at The Troubadour, Shane Hawkins sits in on drums, sharing the stage with his father Taylor Hawkins~ RIP~♥️🥲 It’s a gem to see father and son performing. Taylor is so proud of Shane! ♥️ Shane Hawkins is a phenomenal drummer already, can’t wait to see what the future will be for him, condolences to the Hawkins family. ♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏🙏
Totally awesome shane hawkins. ✌✌✌✌🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭💗
With that hair, and that mini-solo at end..my first thought that came to mind was.. *"Holy fuck😮..there's Animal, if they ever do a live action ~Teeth and the Electric Mayhem~."*
Shane is 17 now. Did you notice his mother clutching her neck after he finished. She was so taken back, she was speechless. That really touched me.
Shane’s just shy of 16. Violet turned 16 early this year. It always gives me chills to watch this. Dave introduced him by saying he didn’t know any who hit the drums harder. Imagine doing that in front of 80k people and a host of legendary drummers.
He DOES hit hard!! And coming from Dave... WOW!! 👏😲
90k and a worldwide audience watching the livestream
That Foo really beats the hell out of the kit. For really just giving it everything he has
but its a big difference between to play one song with all your power or a whole 2 hour concert...
@@seelenwinter6662 ua-cam.com/video/w7sPkXuTtBM/v-deo.html watch how he goes from one song to the other... He's got his live shit together, this gives it away! I think Shane is really getting his practice in playing together with his mates
😭💭
At 8:48 when Shane kisses his dad's drums.. Instant tears! And the way Dave looks at Shane throughout the whole song as if to say.. It's ok buddy, I'm right here with you..is so precious and heartwarming❤❤❤💔💔💔
Seeing all that pain being passed through those drums pulls tears from my soul....
Could be the best version of this song I’ve ever heard. Shane is so together and humble for a 16 y/o it’s awe inspiring, he handles the moment and just makes it wonderful.
Aside from his drum skills, Shane is just first class. He ran over and gave wolfie van halen the biggest hug, because Wolf said he wasnt sure if he could make it through playing classic VH, without his dad and Shane was there for the support and thanking him. The Foos sat, as a family watching Violet sing, and Shane was cheering her on, while looking after his little sisters. He has his dad's generous heart, looking after others. Very cathartic night. Loved seeing a tribe of the worlds best drummers, sitting behind his kit for this.
this is some of the most emotional mind blowing shit i have ever witnessed in music
Three of my favorite things about this video (other than Shane's performance) is the fatherly concern. Dave bringing Shane back into time when he was rushing (as would be expected at that age and under the circumstances), Dave being surprised when he throws in the solo, and Omar Hakim watching over him behind the drum risers.
👌💯
Did he rush? I'd never know. I kinda like that I can't tell.
@@aicram62 Yeah, it wasn't anything crazy, but being a drummer myself I picked up on it. Like I mentioned, totally understandable given all the different factors.
Omar Hakim is sitting at the other drum kit next to Shane, and was ready to take over if the kid broke down and couldn't continue. Obviously that wasn't necessary.
I thank you for making me notice that about Omar Hakim 👍👍👍
I think it’s incredible that Omar Hakim who played with DAVID BOWIE of all people is sitting behind Shane to his right just enraptured with the kids playing.
As a (former) guitar player, Shane’s an incredible drummer for 16.
Kissing his father's snare just before the solo.....
I just can't.
Every time I watch this, over 30 now, I think how Shane looks like he's beating the angst and hatred he must feel at life for having lost his dad. "F you life!! I'm playing!!"
We lost my husband and have 4 sons and 1 daughter. I bought my son's a heavy bag to help express the pain and anger and see that same look on their faces.
This kid is a pure bred drummer. I don't know how else to put it. He was born to be on the kit.
With a broken drumstick, he still just nailed it. I cry everytime I see this.
He was phenomena. I've watched this easily a 100 times. Dave checking on him. Expect big things from this young man, if he chooses. A wonderful celebration of Taylor. RIP
holy shit. that kid just blew every other drummer off that stage. in a time where dave and carey are trying to play with rush this kid just crushed it!
but its a big difference between to play one song with all your power or a whole 2 hour concert...
Oh my. This just stabs you right in the heart - good and bad. Such a talented kid. I was crying and smiling at the same time. My favourite song from the Foos. ❤
One of my faves also Pia
You said the exact same thing I just said but you said it so much better exactly what I meant
Occasionally you get a camera shot from behind the drums, and you can see the back of Omar freakin' Hakim's head - right there grooving along.
This boy plays drum with his heart !
Yup!!
Im a grown man and not ashamed to admit my first time watching this brought me to full on tears. What a powerful moment, Dave Grohl is such an awesome dude.
Dave Grohl es lo mejor de la Creación...y doy gracias a Dios por ello! Desde Madrid España.❤
Dave Grohl is an American Treasure. Played in one of the greatest bands and fronts another great band. The loss of his best friend has got to be devestating.
Shane is amazing! It’s so gave me tears and to just see how Dave just loves him and you can tell he wants to protect him
I was there and I dont think there was a dry eye in the stadium of 90,000 people. Shane did his Dad more than proud. The energy was electric. Gives me goosebumps still to watch this. And Dave did break down a couple of times (made us all cry) but this was the second to last song of a 6 hour concert so I guess he was composed by then and staying strong for Shane.
Dave played with every artist. He lost it during the first Foos song, started sobbing and had to get himself together during Time like this... the part where Taylor famously, bailed Dave out in concert, when he was losing his voice. Grohl is a national treasure. And lets hear it for Pat Smear. Always there for hug, teary eyed watching Violet, just amazing guys, who get what rock is about. Rufus Taylor would be the best fit for a new drummer, if and when....
Both Roger and Rufus Taylor played at this (and the LA)concert too. Such a connection… Rufus has been supporting and mentoring Shane.. much like Roger supported and mentored Taylor. It was so amazing to watch them… such a feeling of family. All watching out for each other. I know Dave has so many options for a replacement for Taylor (not that he can ever really be replaced)… but I hope Rufus is somewhere in the mix. Oh.. and BTW - if you want to watch a comparable tribute concert.. check out the 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert.. EVERYONE who was ANYONE in the 70s and 80s, and early 90s sang - including David Bowie!! Thanks as always for all your great comments regarding this performance!!
Thank you Velda! 🙏
If you don't tear up, you're not human man.
😥
A year later. Eyes still sweating over here.
100%
EPIC. A performance for the ages.
Part of rock history!
So glad I was there to see this live, and to answer your question ‘how did Dave Grohl keep it together’ the answer is he didn’t. He broke down, understandably, whilst performing Times Like These earlier in the show.
Whole show is phenomenal
I flew from Wanaka, NZ to be there and pay my respects to a group of guys I've followed and listened to for 30 years, and it was ELECTRIC! The whole concert: starting with Liam G and finishing with this. Took my kids as this was their Live Aid. It was a chance to share something special with them!! Thank God for DG and the Foos.
You can see Violet Grohl's progression starting with her cover of Adele's "When We Were Young" (San Francisco benefit concert), to X's "Nausea" (studio set), and Amy Winehouse's "Take The Box" (Dave's Hanukkah session from last Dec.). Roughly at 12, 14 and 16 years old.
YES!
Thank you Andrew I simply cant watch this enough. With a lump in my throat I watch as this heart broken young man CRUSH IT!!! Talent oozes out of Shane and I'm certain we will all be hearing from him in the near future.
Unreal Tim! What a performance
the most passionate drum performance i've ever seen especially from a 16 year old!!! he really played for his dad.
It's been months since I first watched this performance and I'm still in awe watching Shane, all that raw emotion coming out. When he leans forward and kisses his father's drum near the end it makes me ugly cry.
I didn't notice that until u pointed it out and now I'm in a puddle of tears!
Shane was playing on Taylor’s set, I love when he kissed the snare quickly at the end, before he did his solo- beautiful tribute to his father. ❤
He's 16 and wow what strength he must have
Wolfgang Van Halen joined Van Halen when he was a teenager. So it wouldn't be out of line to think how well Shane could do. He's only 16 and whatever avenue Shane decides to pursue he will knock it out of the park.
For sure I’m betting Shane is behind that kit as their drummer. !!!
Aside from this outstanding performance of "My Hero", some highlights for me were the Queen section, Wolfgang Van Halen, Justin Hawkins, Dave Grohl and Josh Freese playing "Hot For Teacher" and the Rush section.. with Dave on drums!!.. playing 2112 overture, Working Man and YYZ!! Amazing!!
Played that one for his Pops🫡
After watching it more than 10 times, I still have to hold back my tears! I don’t how Dave and the band could hold it together but I don’t know how Taylor’s son could play this song! You can see and hear all his pain and his emotion saying goodbye to his hero! It’s so moving, I can’t find words! Biggest respect
His family must be so proud!!!
I cry everytime I see this
I hear ya. It's quite the moment
Best drumming face ever. Bar none.100
Dave has such a broken look during the intro, but he has the heart of a lion to keep going...much respect to him, and Shane looked like his Dad back there, all hair, elbows, and sticks flying!
If they don't put that young man in the drummer spot... something is wrong... he has the skills, the presence, and the attitude... let him carry his father's legacy
You got that right , Shane is best one for the job. !!! Hands down
He's a freaking whole level professional...
Shane is old school through and through smashing open high hats the whole time, too good truly.
It showed up for me in my home page feed 🤟✌️
EXCELLENT!
I’ve watched this over and over. What a talent. Can’t wait to see who he plays with down the road.
he is now 17
I remember seeing this on the live stream and on that song I always looked at Shane when they said there goes my hero and I said yup, Shane is my hero that day, never thought I would say that about a kid. I truly believe I am not the only one that thought the same thing that day. Dave checking on him really shows the love they all have for family in the band. He hit the drums so hard that his Dad could hear him in Heaven.
He definitely paid attention to his dad and uncle Dave
Hats off to Taylor. He did a good job raising him.
👌
I was there, quite high up. You could literally feel the stadium moving under foot. Shane was sensational!
Fantastic!!!
AGREE
This was at Wembley, not O2. There were 89,000 people there.
Yup good point
everyone of those beats, is pain of losing his dad.
100%
I managed to see foo fighters at slane Castle here in Ireland on 2015< 85 thousand of us >. Just proves what an amazing dad Taylor was. Gone but never forgotten. R.i.p. Taylor Hawkins .
This is such a beautiful thing it makes me laugh and cry mostly cry but Shane is just such a positive light despite everything is just so positive and I don’t know if that’s the right word for it it was just such a beautiful thing to watch them have each other’s backs and celebrate Taylor’s life and legacy and go through all of this together in this exact way this was the perfect way to do it I think
So so glad this got through. I really wanted to hear your thoughts on what was happening.
Thanks Andy!
Shane’s been his dad’s understudy, drumming in the wings since a wee lad...
(6 yrs old - Aug 26, 2012)
m.ua-cam.com/video/9oHZiZVLak4/v-deo.html
Shane as his dad's soul running through that young man xx
Shane is totally amazing!! I love to watch and re-watch this performance
How can you not cry when you see this
And their hero!!
I’m currently learning this song. I’m at 90% speed and am working to close that last 10%. It’s also really helped my drumming. Totally also agree about Shane - what a massively talented kid.
You are not the only person has thought about the fact that Shane could slide in there and carry on with the Foo Fighters you’re not the only one it’s not inappropriate yes he’s young but if he wants to do it dude I am so here for it if he wants to do it he looks so happy doing it it’s not an appropriate to think that thought because I thought it from the first time I saw this performance I’ve probably watched it 30 times so like yeah of course we’re all gonna think holy yes if Shane wants to do it let Shane do it I’m here for it
Amazing
Kenny G is here 😱
Have watched this numourous times and love it more and more each time.Only recently a Foo Fighters fan
thanks for doing this reaction...
Incredible and heartbreaking at the same time….
this hit me like Jason Bonham stepping in for his papa/
I’m obsessed with drumming I wish I would’ve learned how to be a drummer I watch all of the drummers esp the young ones… Nandy junna yoyoka. But I love watching drum teachers watch the young ones and I love watching how amazed you are because I feel the same way and I don’t even know how to play the drums I am just drawn to tears I smile and I cry at the same time. But watching you be amazed and all of the drum teachers be amazed and all of the reactions just validates what I feel when I see these young people just doing things that nobody would think it’s possible but they’re doing it and Shane I mean…
Wonderful drummer ♥️
His father is so proud 👏
SO GOOD!
Hey, grew up around drums I’m sure he learned to play them at an early age
Hat's off to Shane indeed... bashing those cans like a teenager raging at losing a dad. Awesome job.
You know I saw Violet sing I don’t know maybe six years ago maybe more Dave brought her on stage to sing and she was very young and clearly since then she has found her voice and has developed and I don’t know if she took lessons or not she probably didn’t even need to but holy moly was blown away by how absolutely beautiful her voices and her energy and I’m not the first person to say this but I want to see Taylor Hawkins violet Grohl and Frances Bean Cobain get together and collaborate we all want this
The my favourite
I don’t know if I watch the entire concert but believe you me if I haven’t watched the entire concert I am going to some point because I don’t wanna miss any second of this beautiful tribute to Taylor
Respekt !
Don't hang your t-shirts on a hanger...LOL...love hearing you...from Ontario Canada...home of so many great bands
Love Dave groul!!!
Shane è un ragazzo prodigio! Tale padre tale figlio ❤ potrebbe prendere il suo posto anche se è giovane
How do you keep your energy up playing drums through a show?
go to Chevy Metal. Taylor's old band Shane kills it. He should be Foo's drummer
Great name for a band!
El fruto nunca cae lejos del árbol
JAJA!
Es verdad
😢😢😢
❤ Taylor hawkins was an amazing drummer and Shane rocks it!!!!!!
100%
ua-cam.com/video/9oHZiZVLak4/v-deo.html Shane 10 yrs ago. He comes by his talent honestly.
I was wondering the same thing. How Dave Grohl could hold it together after the passing of Taylor several months before and his own mother just a few weeks before this concert?
The show must go on. Youre talking about Dave Grohl here, the guy who lost his best friend and leader of his band at a young age, and instead of giving up he recorded his own album, all the instruments himself, and the Foo Fighters were born.
Hes a strong SOB. His method of coping is his music. He knows no other way, a true artist through and through.
It’s obvious they would do the thing their parents dO
You haven’t even sent it yet but I know what you’re gonna say and it’s better than live aid because yes Liberry was beautiful it was beautiful but this is interviewed of one person all these people came together for one person I don’t know why it’s different than live aid but it does hit different because I don’t know how many people cried it live aid but I can tell you what I bet everyone who watched any of this tribute cried at some point I’m not trying to take anything away from negative any other tribute concert they are all beautiful but this one made me cry and laugh and smile and then cry again so many times
Family just that, its not always blood.
Andrew YOU ARE A BIG MUSH. But to see you at first I wondered, what kind of guy is this? But I love you.
To mew, Shane drum style echos Dave more than Taylor, power and raw tallent. Also, time to watch the concert again!
Honestly I presumably as a drum teacher as him learning under Taylor. You really have no bias or room to say the kid learn the song by the person that wrote them....
So glad this one’s been unblocked
If you haven't, you should read Dave's boot Storyteller.
Shane's 16 here
If the world was Dave grohl the world would be a better place. 🤗
