Mascots are thing in Japan, he is playing a kids concert. But the person was hired specifically as a drummer tho I don’t know if they knew to what degree
The name is Nyango Star. A portmanteau of Nyan, Japanese for the sound a cat makes, and Ringo, Japanese for Apple with the added level of Ringo Starr, drummer for the Beatles.
The viral explosion has lead to them starting their own metal band with other mascot characters named Charamel. Ever see a bassist play with oven mitts?

For all who are agnostic, it's written in the description the drummer looked very confused but okay to the guitarist as they recognized what had happened. They all had earplugs in so didn't hear what was happening.

As said below, Nyango Star is a mascot for an apple growing city in Aomori prefecture. To explain the name (I am half Japanese, btw) - costume is meant to look like a cat/apple hybrid because: Ringo Starr the drummer, "ringo" being the very similar japanese pronunciation of "apple". And "nyan" is the Japanese sound for a cat's meow. Hence the drummer now being Nyango Star. Lol
I also have a theory as to who it is based on playing style, but I do not want to let the "cat out of the bag" in public. ;)

I have seen that 'overqualified' video no less than a dozen times, and I'm on the floor laughing every time!! What impresses me the most is that he's still in rhythm to the song, but filling every possible space with insanity - all while wearing that cumbersome cat suit! That cannot be easy - my guess he is going entirely by feel as visibility has GOT to be limited - and if that's so, then even higher props! Just imagine how good he is without the suit.

People should really look up Nyango Star more Nyango has far more skills than is shown in that video.
You don't really need to look at your kit while playing after enough practice, most drummers on a set they know could quite easily play with their eyes closed. It's a "feel" thing~

So this apple-cat tries to become famous, reach hollywood and be transformed back into a real cat. As Ringo Star was her role model, she got by the name Nyango Star and started drumming. It is a well known and cute folk lore in Japan.

From the Cross smashed Drummer vid: Honestly, we had in-ears in. Didn’t hear it. Drums are in the back, behind everyone. EVEN after I (the worship leader on acoustic) turned and saw the 'drum shield collapsed', I didn’t realize it was the cross laying on him at first. We were all in shock! What you can’t see, is that the drummer was looking at me and smiling, very confused, but smiling. He was ok

According to the legends of old; whenever you zone out during a children's concert, if you pay attention you can still hear the echo of Nyago Star. Whenever a drummer sits down in front of their set, by closing their eyes and surrender their body; for one moment in time, they can channel the echo and become a Star.

I don't know what it is called musically around 5:54 in the reaction video but that sudden shift to an almost empty style of drumming really impresses me after all the seemingly frenetic drumming before and after.
The whole song though the drummer keeps time beautifully and still allows the main theme to be a present part of each phase.
The way Nyango Star switches it up, it looks like he got bored with playing the original tempo, and decides to get his metal groove on. Apparently, from reading other comments, this is just another day for him, though. Good for him, trying to make people smile.
He is a solo drummer. To increase his marketability, he created a character called 'Nyango Star' who plays drums while wearing doll clothes.
He also created a brief backstory for his own cat character, a story involving his own local apple. And he calls himself the local apple mascot, but it is not an official character of the local government.
He has been promoting himself on the Internet, and has gained popularity through such efforts and is being called to various performances. He transforms his various melodies into metal and gained popularity with this concept.
Nyango star is hilarious, many more videos out there! Its not off script. He's the mascot of a japanese prefecture representing a mix of an apple, a cat, and ringo star (hence the name: nya means meow, ringo means apple). Its hilarious.

Nyango Star is an apple cat who is like the sponsor of a region that grows apples. He is part of the metal band called Charamel. In Japan its not uncommon for this sort of thing and they go with the idea that there is no-one in the costume and its not done to ask who he is.

It was an instrumental that started out with a rather simple drum solo, but the tempo progressively increased with every verse, until it got to the point where I thought my radio would self destruct. Even though Moon wasn't mic'ed up, he could still be heard screaming wildly as he experienced the brain-strain of trying to keep time toward the end of the track. It was absolute madness.
I'm unable to find ANYTHING about it online anymore. I heard it as a kid on the Dr. Demento Radio Show.

That is the main them song to the animated Cartoon series for children, Anpan man! Basically a flying Superhero with the face of an Anpan (a soft round pastry bun with sweet black bean inside).

Nyango Star (the name of the mascot) is a very clever triple entendre. It is the mascot of the Aomori prefecture, which has a large production of apples. This, and the Japanese love of cats, inspired it's form as a cross between an apple and a cat. Now for the name. In Japanese, 'Meow' is ‘にゃー’, or 'Nyaa', and 'Apple' is ‘りんご’ (Ringo). These words are combined to form the first part of their name: Nyango, and because they play the drums, 'Star' is added after 'Nyango' as an homage to Beatles drummer Ringo Starr

The song he’s playing to is the theme song for Anpanman which translates to Bread man. It’s definitely for very young kids, as mine grew up watching it while I lived in Japan. They do shows like that all the time, recorded music with mascots. I laughed so hard when I first saw this

The 2nd drummer is Nyango Star, it's a cat. And he is part of talented animals musicians band. Nygango Star played even in front of his idol, Yoshiki (and he got a laugh).

I was at as show once, power failure, lights amps the whole lot. Band walks of stage and the drummer is still pounding away, played with his eyes closed, no one bothered to let him know for about a minute
