I was at this show, in the front circle, on Shane's side of the stage. I couldn't take my eyes off him. This moment was monumental in an evening of huge, huge moments. I'd be lying if I said I didn't cry a few times during the 6 hours of music.
@@halftag15 I think that you're right. Shane's moment dominates right now and for however long, for all the obvious reasons. I bet people will start revisiting the other great performances and unexpected moments that were forgotten for a minute, after we saw Shane's performance.
Yeah, this kid smashed it. He’s only 16. The pride on Dave’s face hits me in the feelings every time. I’m sure Shane has a lot of “band uncles” who will always look out for him. Like Dave said when he introduced him, they’re a family. I can’t wait to see where this kid goes.
Dave played pretty much all day and night, every instrument. He cried, he sobbed, he laughed, he lead the way. Keeping in mind, his beloved mom died just last month too. Even the kids, seeing Shane run over and give Wolfie Van Halen a huge hug, aftr Hot for teacher, for both their dads.. or Dave, Pat, their kids and the Hawkins kids sitting on the stage watch Violet Grohl sing Valerie... just the best healing vibes. How the crowd lifted Dave up when he broke down during Times like This, beyond touching.
I've seen this 10x on my own, and every reaction of it that I can find, and EVERYONE is missing 1 thing! At the end, right before his little drum solo...HE BENT OVER AND KISSED THE DRUM BEFORE HE BEAT THE BRAKES OF THEM!
No one ever mentions that if there was no video of this and no pretext that no one who ever suspect it wasn't Taylor playing it was so perfect. And how the kid literally emulates ever mannerism in style of his dad. It's like Taylor was sitting right in that chair with him while he was playing. This is a pretty darn technical song to play even for the son of a drummer
I ugly cried man! To watch Shane play THAT song was just so emotional. He beat the hell out of these drums. He played with so much emotion and rage for a 16 year old that just lost his daddy. He is his dads prodigy and did his daddy proud. Dave and the other members were constantly watching over him to make sure he was ok. You can tell they were so proud of him. Shane showed so much bravery and played his heart out. Just an amazing tribute to his father. Don’t know if you know this, but he played on his dads touring drum kit. Made it that much more meaningful.
That high bouncing knee is such a Taylor move ! I don’t know how they can go on without him . He was such a huge part of their band and he and Dave so close .
This beautifully talented boy fills his father's shoes and you can see the grief on his face as he was trying to do his dad justice. And the pride on Dave and Pat's faces is evident ... I get goosebumps every time I see this. Like you said, like his own son. It's beautiful
His dad took over his body right before he hits the power section on floor and tom. This is way to perfect that its only 16 year old playing this song like this. And you can see in Shanes eyes while he do his dads signature fill in the end. It was Taylor and he was saying goodbye to his bandmates and family. Dave knew it was Taylor. Thats why his eyes light up and tears go down Shanes eyes. Good job kid❤️❤️
When Shane was little he play to the side of the stage along his father. Shane poured his heart in soul into this song I hope since Wolfie was there he gave encouragement to Shane I am sure the performance live was emotional experience Shane 16 years Dave daughter is amazing singer too
Yes, theres a little clip of Shane and Wolf hugging. Wolf posted it on his Twitter. Shane also played club gigs with his dad's side bands, including with Dave Navarro. He's definitely been performing in front of audiences for years, but of course this is a different level and circumstances. He's got a bright future, that's for sure.
I get tears in my eyes every time I watch it. The only band I had in my bucket list has always been Foo Fighters. I had tickets to see them finally on July 25th. I was so heartbroken. Shane killed it! ❤️❤️
I was lucky enough to be one of the 90,000 people there, I somehow ended up in the front row, it was the most amazing, surreal, emotional concert I've ever been to, I can't stop thinking about it, everyone who took part did Taylor proud.
I expect that the Foos will take an extended break from touring and focus on songwriting until Shane turns 18 and has finished High School. After that, he'll become their official drummer, the same as Wolfgang did with Van Halen. After that historical performance, I can't imagine that anyone would ever really want to see someone other than Shane Hawkins sitting in Taylor's seat.
Ive been to a whole lot of live shows seeing every major band you can imagine going back to the early 70's. To this day, the Foo Fighters are in my top 5 best live shows I have ever seen and we are talking from the Stones in the 70's to The Cure, Depeche, U2, TOOL, NIN, Nirvana, The Police, I mean a lot of shows. I saw the Foo's in Austin TX at ACL and it was one of the greatest experiences I ever seen. They bring you into their hearts and make you feel it and the power of music, in almost a tribal sense of celebration. Great reaction!
Yes, the Foo’s are the best show I’ve ever seen! Dave knows how to bring the house down. Tool is my other favorite concert but on such a different level.
Oooh! I had to stop scrolling and watch this. I saw the concert on UA-cam and I flipping cried through this song. Shane Hawkins is his father's son through and through. I have loved Foo Fighters from their inception. I was so lucky to see them in concert in Atlanta in 2018. I sang along to this song as loud as possible because it reminds me of my Dad, rest his soul. Now with Shane playing this song, it adds a whole other emotional dimension to the song for me. Thank you for reacting and your insightful comments. ❤
I cry every time I watch this..and I have watched it a ton of times! The entire concert was unbelievable and and so much to process. I’m still broken over it all. The outpouring from people, musicians etc all over the world speaks volumes of what a shining light Taylor Hawkins really was. 🌟💔🤍
I don’t know that there is any other rockstar on the planet nearly as badass as Dave Grohl. He really does seem like one of the coolest guys to walk the planet. I’d love to be in a room where and and Keanu Reeves both were.
I've watched many reactions to this and watched the original video of the performance about 20 Tim and each time I do I cry. This was a very special night for Shane and for music history PERIOD. He's mad mad talented!!!!!!
I was there and the whole crowd were in awe, there was a lot of tears but in an uplifting way and Shane just owned it. Every single one of the 85,000 at Wembley was behind him and the atmosphere was electric. His dad would have been so proud, Dave was 💕
As for Shane Hawkins, tears were in my eyes the whole time. I loved watching UA-cam videos of Shane sitting in on the drums when Taylor sang lead in his side band projects. You should check out more of Shane on drums, this isn't his first time at the rodeo.
If Shane was just a couple of years older, he would be an ideal Band member. At 16, there are all sorts of complex "Child Working Laws and Regulations'
Well, Wolfgang Van Halen joined Van Halen as a 16 year old, so it can be done, but it's highly doubtful his mom and even Dave would put that much pressure on Shane at this time. Maybe when he gets older? I hope the band continues with a new drummer.
This was emotional for Dave not only because of Taylor’s passing but his mom passed away about three weeks before this event. She was a huge part of Dave’s love for music. She was also a huge supporter of The Foo Fighters
I had tears once again coming across your channel. Loved your reaction! I have been a FF fan for 25+ years and this is the BEST I have ever heard them Play!
🎶 There is a huge difference between performing one song and going on tour with a band at 16, though Shane was the highlight of this tribute concert to his dad! 👏
Just getting around to watching these tribute reactions, I watched this as soon as it was recorded but it's just so damn sad. Shane sure made his Dad proud with this one. Goosebumps on top of goosebumps and quite a few tears.
I could watch Shane Hawkins on the drums all day. What talent. He hits them like a beast just like his dad Taylor. Only 16, WOW smashing those drums. RIP Taylor ❤️❤️
Watched this idk how many times. I just realized the band members keep looking back at him to make sure he's okay (or to keep pace but that's what I took from it)
I watche the whole sho and have to say i cried i laughed and i just felt love throughout the whole thing. The overarching emotion in that place was love. Everyone was giving everyone hugs and looking out of everyone else and that is amazing. Shane is amazing and so was Violet. Both 16 and both totally killed it.
I hope Shane goes on to do incredible things with his musicianship. I agree…he should be their drummer. As a parent, I feel like I was watching my kid up there. Just stunning ❤
this whole show was an emotional rollercoaster. it was live on fathers day here in australia and i lost my dad in may so the whole thing had me crying non stop. a beautiful tribute to Taylor and one I hope can be made available for everyone to watch again.
Oh, no. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you're able to find peace and heal from it soon. 🖤 I think it's on Paramount +, but if nothing else, I like to think we'll be able to find at least the individual songs on here. I appreciate you check it out. Much love. 🙏🏻
I've never seen FF live, but have been at a jam he played in Joshua Tree, at a studio space...he's just a really decent human. Idk how he did that wo bawling! I'm a big drum nerd...did you see the size of Shane's (age 12) kit?! A very physical player, a basher...like Jukka from Nightwish back in the day. I really respect that kid and Dave for thar performance! Ima go cry now
Their Glastonbury headline set in 2017 was unbelievable. The best live performance I've ever seen. They played for like an hour longer than they should have but even the organisers let them carry on even though they were technically breaking anti-social noise laws by playing so late. One of my favourite memories.
He’s a clone of his dad! ❤ What an amazing young man. His pops was right there with him…. 😊 There’s an old video out there of Taylor playing drums in a high school talent show. The resemblance is scary.
Taylor played drums for allanis morissette, dave asked him to play drums for him one day, and, dave said he didn't like playing drums when Taylor was in the room, that's how good of a drummer he was..
They performed their official 1st show last night with new drummer Josh Freese…it was an emotional evening with a few of their new songs from the new album dropping June 2…and the show must go on..there was many tributes to Taylor and Dave sang Tay’s song A Cold Day in the Sun…that was hard to watch..
I think that Rufus Taylor, who was the Taylor Hawkins drum tech and the son of Roger Taylor from Queen, will be the next drummer for the Foo Fighters if they decide to continue on without Taylor. Rufus played during the tribute. Dave won't stop making music, but this may be the end of the Foo Fighters. It is nearly impossible to replace Taylor, but we shall see. Rufus would be an excellent choice.
Would love to see Shane take his rightful & earned place as a Foo if that’s what he wants for himself. Given he’s been at shows during along behind the stage since he was 6 I think he probably would want the spot. He’s certainly ready talent wise, is well educated about what the life entails and would certainly be safe given how many godfathers would be there to guide him. Taylor said in an interview last year that he & Shane had already discussed it and he was going to pass the drumsticks on Shane’s 18th birthday. He was ready to step back from touring & both love the idea of a Hawk always being on that stage. It had been discussed with Dave and the band as well. They thought they had plenty of time, it heartbreaking for everyone that they didn’t.
I know that Shane's goal has always been to be a professional drummer like his dad. Dave Chappelle even talked about meeting him on the side stage at a show and he was wearing skater shoes and he asked if he skateboarded. Shane said no he didn't want to hurt his arms because he wanted to be a drummer like his dad.
Kid smashed this song and he does hit hard on the drums. The fact he could get through this performance with all of the emotions he must have from losing his dad is something on its own. Add that he's doing it in front 90,000 people and while I know he's been around him for years, in front of one of the best and most bad a@@ drummers of our generation shows this kid is beyond mature for his age. We'll see him on tour soon if he wants to go down the route.
Oh man, they are one of the best live bands... they are almost in line with Queen, being somehow better live because its perfectly imperfect and they ALWAYS did at least 3 hours... rain, shine or broken leg XD He really is so much like his father and Taylor once said that he (Shane) viewed Rufus Taylor as a mentor on drums which is hilarious because Rufus cites Taylor as his mentor who cited Roger Taylor, Rufus' own dad, as one of HIS mentors... its like this long line of drumming legends and I really hope he stays with it and becomes someone elses mentor down the road (maybe Rufus' child once he has one lol)
Seeing the worlds greatest drummers sitting behind Taylors kit, being the best drumming uncles, sporting Shane, was amazing. The kid hits so hard, I was nervous he would break his sticks. That was a cathartic performance.
The Foo Fighters can play with any number of guest drummers. One of their back up singers , Barbara is a talented drummer. Right now the Foos just need to breathe and grieve.
😭💭 At 8:04 when Shane kisses his dad's drums.. Instant tears! And I love how Dave looks at Shane throughout the whole song as if to say ... It's ok buddy, I'm right here with you❤❤❤💔💔💔
Neither Dave or Taylor were known for being "kind" to their drum kits haha. They beat the hell out of them, so when Dave remarks about how hard this kid hits the drums, that was a MASSIVE compliment and the kid absolutely proved Dave's point. There will never be a better version of this song than this version.
Yes! Most deff think Shane should fill his dad's shoes!!! I was thinkin the same Rick Allen was 15 when he joined Leppard I hope this will be the case it would be fitting to carry on under these conditions
If you haven't seen this yet, i suggest "Best of You" live at Wembley 2006........you might get teary eyed.,.....i did......Dave had a tender moment with Taylor.
Ssssstellar, stellar, stellar drummer and performance! I mean this kid isn't JUST a good drummer...obviously he FUUUCKING KILLS. But even more than that, he's literally rockin that kit as if he's already anactive touring musician. That kid can def fill the shoes on the kit...and wouldn't make sense for anyone other than. Fuck yeah, Shane!!!!!
In my opinion, being a fan of them from the beginning (die hard fan)... I think Shane plays like his dad, and a little like Dave... but he grew with them. I cry a little, each time I see this video. He's already good by his own merits. He's just 15 or 16 and he's just as good as his dad. Also, Dave Chappelle was saying that when he met Shane and asked where was his skateboard, Shane said he doesn't skate because he doesn't want to break his arms because he's a drummer or he's gonna be a drummer... something along these lines. In my POV he IS already a Drummer. And I think he'll be famous on his own merits. Comparisons will alway be there, but he's gonna earn his place.
I think, between Violet Grohl and Shane Hawkins, they could have they're own band!!! Violet is an amazing singer and, well, we just watched Shane and he's amazing as well!!
U should check out the tribute at the forum two weeks after this doing I stick around. He does this as well but he plays it put differently pauses for 10 seconds and launches into I stick around like a gd 🚀. U gotta check it out. There isn't a really good video of it but I oi can pick fr Abt 30 different angles cuz EVERYBODY recorded it. This kid is sick.

You really can't not watch him, his facial expressions are everything, I hope he never loses that.
Cool
Wolfie killed it also. Some people almost accused him of faking it, because it was so spot on! But Taylor stole the show!

The goose bumps is because his dad is coming out through his son.

oml the way Dave looked at Shane we he hit the drums 😭
Shane is 16 and his dad Taylor was 50. The 2nd tribute will be on September 27th in LA I believe.
Oh man, they are one of the best live bands... they are almost in line with Queen, being somehow better live because its perfectly imperfect and they ALWAYS did at least 3 hours... rain, shine or broken leg XD
He really is so much like his father and Taylor once said that he (Shane) viewed Rufus Taylor as a mentor on drums which is hilarious because Rufus cites Taylor as his mentor who cited Roger Taylor, Rufus' own dad, as one of HIS mentors... its like this long line of drumming legends and I really hope he stays with it and becomes someone elses mentor down the road (maybe Rufus' child once he has one lol)
This moment will be an important performance in rock and roll history
Seeing the worlds greatest drummers sitting behind Taylors kit, being the best drumming uncles, sporting Shane, was amazing. The kid hits so hard, I was nervous he would break his sticks. That was a cathartic performance.
If you see towards the end there, he actually did break one of his sticks.
The Foo Fighters can play with any number of guest drummers. One of their back up singers , Barbara is a talented drummer.
Right now the Foos just need to breathe and grieve.
90000 people singing in unison. Holy shit awesome
Best drumming face ever,bar none!
The legacy goes on
😭💭
At 8:04 when Shane kisses his dad's drums.. Instant tears! And I love how Dave looks at Shane throughout the whole song as if to say ... It's ok buddy, I'm right here with you❤❤❤💔💔💔
Foo's "Live at Wembley Stadium" dvd from 2008 is pretty great imo.
The best comment I've read is that "he plays with the rage of a 16 year old that just lost his father."
Dave Chapelle gave a good speech early on that day about meeting Shane and honoring Taylor as a father.
shane's got it. he has something very special. i hope he sticks with drums.
He even hits the drums like Dave
He hits just like his dad!
Shane said I stole these f-ing shorts from my dad. Lol Dave covered his mouth.
That’s the thing the band are Shane’s uncles like all their kids
I think, between Violet Grohl and Shane Hawkins, they could have they're own band!!! Violet is an amazing singer and, well, we just watched Shane and he's amazing as well!!
Great job
This song came out in 1999. God
It looks like Shane is drumming out some anger and sadness.
I dont think a 16 year old is going on world tours..... Chills to say the least! Hats off to that young man!
He should deff continue his father's legacy end rant lol hands down
I doubt it will happen but it would be amazing to see Shane take his father's spot behind the kit if the Foo Fighters continue.
How amazing would it be if Shane took over as the drummer. Sure he's sixteen, but I'm sure a traveling tutor would do for his last two years of HS.
He should play with the Foo Fighters. But im sure his mother wants him to finish school.
Kissing the Tom drum at the end
Look at 8:03, Shane kissed the snare before the solo…
