San Francisco Rent is notoriously expensive. My family of 3 decided it was a priority to live in Downtown SF even though we only had a salary of $65k. To do that, we had to get creative. I expanded our 400 sqft apartment by an additional 54SF with a sleeping loft and stairs that double as storage. I documented the build of this loft on YT, but wanted to break it down for you guys in written format here. I started the UA-cam channel 6 weeks ago related to how my family earns, spends and invests our money. Our apartment costs about $51.6/sqft/year, this loft saved us $2786/year with the extra 54 square feet it added. Over 3 years that’s a $8356 savings on a $688 materials cost investment. That’s a 1200% ROI not taking into account the time it took to build, but I enjoy that and the emotional reward of knowing I built the thing I use every night.
It sustained 3 earthquakes and many (micro) dance parties.
If I had to sleep on something I built I’ll fall right through it lol
How could it be, you’re light and fluffy
Lmfaoo the pfp😭😭
U ain't lying
@@kesha.weesha BRO IM DEAD LMFAO
I probably would too so don't feel bad!
The way you say brackets and screw itself make this video the best
You've inspired me and my dad to build a loft bed like this because I've been wanting a loft bed for a while and didn't know which kind to build
Amazing to hear! Good luck with the build
PERFECT. This is what I am doing with my NYC studio. Only 350 sq ft but has high ceiling. THANKS FOR SHARING
Absolutely amazing your effort and the organization of all data recorded. Love it!!! I might use it do it myself.
Awesome! Would love to see what you build if you end up moving forward with it. Glad you found the video helpful!
Brilliant with the use of headers, wood joist and hangers!
I've been thinking of different lofts because had in mind to build one for my babygirl. The staircase the way you did it is exactly how I thought to do. So crazy. Looks nice👍
Fantastic! YOu make it look so easy! I would love to do this with my husband as we have our art studios in the living room but would also like a place to rest and chill and watch movies. We'll have to, however, add a guard rail to the bed and a hand rail to the stair case because we are not spring chickens anymore. Blessings to you and yours! Thank you again! - Tina
I was looking for an alternative for my teen daughter, she shares a room with her 10 y/o sister. I Think she'll love this!! thank you so much for sharing !!!!!!!!
Such a clean design. Thanks for sharing. I like the take-down info as well.
カッコよすぎる!
your amazing, i would love to have my stair step done for my bunkbed....
Thanks! Do you currently have a ladder?
i really respect that you reply to most comments!! i really enjoyed watching this video too, and the room looked great!
:) glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for checking it out
I wish I had a better sleeping space for my small room. This might help
Great idea and used of space. Thanks for sharing the video.
Thank you for checking it out, hope it helped inspire something
Mezanino é tudo de bom! Vou fazer uma kitinet com um mezanino pra virar quarto!👏👏👏❤
Sucks that you couldn't just leave it. I bet the next person would have appreciated having a loft.
Ya, I was thinking that as I was taking it down. I left all the pieces in our “favorite store” so maybe the the tenant will find it :)
The landlord would benefit from that...trust me.
@@islandbreezy441 for sure but it is a technical fire hazard they count have kept it cause it blocked the fire sprinklers so if there was a fire under it. It would have gotten put out. however, if they had a plumber go into the wall they could have added at fitting and split it to the bottom side of the loft which would have been a few hundred. and they could increase rent so yes they could benefit quite a bit from that.
@@maxortega8073 You also have to add insurance claims incase something goes bad with it. It was a good decision to take it down to avoid possible future problems
That's in San Francisco. Probably the most restrictive city government when it comes to building. For that to be legal he probably would have had to spend over ten grand in architect's and permits and city inspectors and then more city inspectors and don't forget the city inspectors
Good use of space. One issue that you might run into with this being permeant is not having the fire sprinklers underneath the loft which they (usually) should be by code. Also at 7:15 it shows how close you could get to the sprinklers themselves to touch them. If accidentally bumped they can set off and flood the building, but for cheap insurance you can buy sprinkler head guards which are a small wire cage that covers the sprinkler head and helps prevent them from being struck. A couple dollars of cheap insurance.
Ya, the wire cages are a good idea.
Beautifully constructed! Thank you for sharing! I would love to be able to make an 8x 24 Tiny home on wheels, step by step. I know it is a big project but if you can make such a beautiful loft I know you can make a tiny home and you can probably design one better than many I see out there! I would like the loft to be “easy access” as I am an older person, 67.Basically an easy-access loft is similar to this one but it allows you to stand while having the bed part across from you so that all you have to do is lie down. There is no crawling you have to do to get to the bed part. In other words the steps lead right to the bed and you can stand while next to the bed.
Good idea! I would like to build a tiny house one day. I’ll be sure to make a video about it if I end up making one. Good ideas with the accessibility of the bed.
I love this... thank you 🙏🏼 I will be checking out more of your content... excellent 👍
Cool, that’s what I was looking from long time✌🏻😃
Amazing project! I'll be trying to adapt the plan and items needed for my reality. Thanks alot for making them available! Cheers from Brazil my dude.
Thanks! Hope it works out for you
You seem to be the only one who figure out they you can adjust the measurements LOL!!! Hope it comes our great...
This was a very cool project man! You made it look easy too!
Thanks!
I could watch you DIY all night long
Definitely gonna have to do this for whenever I get a house!
Yess
“Battle tested” mhmm we know what you’re trying to say haha
we have the same thought lol
Thousand bombs per night
*Explosive detail.*
Someone has erupted.

Imma need a little more security to those stairs🔨🐳. Otherwise great build. 👍👷
Haha, thanks! Ya I was trying to go for the “floating” look but you can definitely beef it up
@@AlexRosier sure will. I'm going to look at some of your other videos. You've inspired to do a little diy projects.
:) awesome, let me know if I can help with anything as you get started
@@AlexRosier If you really want that look, steel sheet is the only way to go.
Ya, that’s another option. I’ve never worked with steel sheet and I had a sheet of this plywood already that I wanted to use to cut down on cost. This build fit our needs well
amazing!!!! I'm going to harass my boyfriend to make this for us now lol
Haha
I'm thinking the same thing..I just need a boyfriend first
I’m sorry, I know this video is old, but how much without the stairs?
Hi can I get ur whatsapp number
@@gracer.channel392 lol just do it yourself.
Bueno , muy bueno. Busque muchísimo este modelo , me fue muy útil 👏

Few apartments have ceilings high enough to do this.
Good point, something that stood out to me when I first went to see the apartment when I was deciding to rent it.
@@AlexRosier that's my problem, every small room design I see seems to have endless ceiling Height.
These ceilings are actually really common in SF. I also live there and have had a loft for almost a decade after a friend who also had a loft offered to help me build it. Probably depends on where you live though.
Alex Rosier how tall are the ceilings
Murphy bed or sofa bed will be your best bet if you have problems with ceiling height :)
*que top, vou fazer um mezanino igual ao seu!*
You're a genius and resourceful.
Great video! Thank you.
Thanks :)
very cool...thanks for the inspiration !!!
Those are some amazing lag bolts holding up those stairs.
Haha, ya I went all out on the lag bolts. Probably a bit overkill honestly, but they didn’t budge
Good ideas in this video, thanks for sharing!
This is a great idea! I was wondering if you could give me an idea on my 8’ x 20’ container man cave. I am thinking of a foldable flat board as the base of my bed, on top of a bath tub! The bed or futon cushion is foldable into one fold and the base will hold the cushion on the wall and the other side of this wall will be sort of a bathroom wall, like tiles. The hight of the bath tub will be enough to set the bed and sitting area at the same time. The tub will have an oblong curtain rod in the ceiling so water will not splash outside, then after shower, hand and rain shower, then unfold the two walls where the cushion will me laid on too of the bath tub. Of course the base board of the bed would have a brace on the three walls so it does not actually touch the tub but just enough height where you could sleep or sit on the bed when tub is not in used.
Did you end up building this and how did it work out?
It make me inspired to do this same thing in a small condominium. . .. Thanks a lot for this information and save time and money
Men this is really cool, also good for a small space like this! Thanks for this video men
Appreciate it! We loved it
Overall design is very nice. Are the upper steps sturdy enough if they are just being held together with those brackets?
Thanks! Yes the upper steps are very sturdy (tested with 300+ pounds of weight on them). They were also anchored into the wall in 2 places.
This is an awesome video. Thank you for sharing! Very helpful.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Are you working on a project?
@@AlexRosier Not yet, but I want to make a platform bed soon so I'm doing research.
Nice! Let me know if I can help with anything
Who is this
You had my alexa responding so much lmaoo
Wuuu amazing !!!! I love it😍😍😍❤️
Awesome work man! Subbed!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Any DIY projects on your to do list?
Its owesome...very nice.(from uk)
You need a exhaust fan for the ceiling. San Fransisco doesn't get hot until you're in the apartments during summer. Very smart with the build.
Ya, we put a fan up there a few days a year. One of the perks of being on the "ground floor"/"basement" was the temperature regulation.
Thanks for your very imformative video! You have a great gift for making your explanations fun.
Glad you enjoyed it
This is a very good idea. But remember when dealing with stairs. To review specs to see if they are in code. Which I believe is 7 3/4" rise with 11" tread. That way if any accidents happen at home you or the apartment owners can not get fined by the city
Good point, this was all done without a permit and the stairs were not to code. They needed to fit in that space due to the door opening. The alternative would have been using a ladder
This is amazing and so inspiring:)
GOD BLESS YOU MAY GOD MAKE YOUR CHANNEL MONETIZE D SOON HOPE TO SEE YOUR MORE VIDEO OMAR HERE FROM PHILIPPINES WATCHING....
Thanks! More coming soon :)
What changes would you need to make to accommodate metal studs?
wow great work!

Thanks a lot from Sweden
:) glad you enjoyed!
great idea❤️❤️
nice ang galing naman
Wow what a great DIY. Can I sleep there? Kidding.
How much space was left between ceiling and loft??
Awesome bro 👍👍👍
this is amazing!!
Thanks :)
Finally going to attempt a modified version of this with my own measurements. Do you think the holes for the washers are 100% necessary or can i just use the washers over the surface?
You can use the washers on over the surface. I just wanted the bolt head to sit flush with the surface so we didn't snag out clothes on it when we were walking up/down the stairs. Good luck with the project!
looking for some ideas on a toddler bed lofty that will go over mom and dads bed.. in a small apt.
I like it when you use basic english and pronounce it clearly like am a filipino lover😅😊

Is the stairs strong enough? Especial the top areas that has no support from the ground.
Thanks for sharing.

@@AlexRosier ur welcome men..
Nice house ideas.
Cool ideas
Very nice!!
Hey could you show exactly how you made the led light strip wood piece. It’s exactly what I need for our apartment.
Hey, did you look at the Imgur link in the description. At the end I have some angles of the light that might help you put it together.
I mean you added an entire extra bedroom that's definitely worth doing!
I agree :)
that's some kamasutra warrior sh*t you got goin on right there master; BATTLE TESTED! hahaha
😂 things get pretty crazy in our household
Hey Alex, nice arrangement space utilize video. What we called small bedroom inside house.
What are the dimensions of the room u put it in? If my room is to small what can I do to get around it. I sleep myself, so I don't need a wider bed.
Woulda love to see u put the frame together
Nice work 👌
Thanks!
Awesome project! By the way, are those stairs strong & stable? I didn’t see you attached them to the wall? Or I missed anything?
Thanks! Ya, the stairs were very strong and stable. I put more than 300lbs on them and they were fine. They are anchored to the wall in two places 1) at the top stair 2) on the 5th step. You can kind of see the anchor points in the plans here: imgur.com/gallery/6MsAhLP
@@AlexRosier Thank you very much ^^ Regards from Thailand.
Can you send a link with the full video without the effects?
Serious question. How much weight or force can this loft bed handle?
