This week I show you a DIY bedroom makeover from start to finish. I walk through all the steps and provide tips and tricks along the way. I normally break my content up into individual episodes, but for this project I wanted to show you all the entire renovation all in one video. Let me know what you think of this style of video and the end result of the project! I love how this one turned in the end and hope you enjoy the video!
Thank you for watching and hopefully you found the video helpful!

I've always heard that black makes a space feel smaller, but your use of LED's really illuminates the black which looks fantastic. Great work man!
Thank you! I was also hesitant to incorporate black into my designs for that reason, but now I love using darker colors for contrast. And as you mentioned, with the right lighting, darker colors can look great!
Black is the color of the endless night sky. It is misconception that darkness makes a room feel smaller. I am so happy that dark colors are becoming more commonplace now
a small room is small, black doesn't make it small. I love the use of black or a very dark graphite grey on walls. my go to shade. (Black is not a colour, neither is White. They are shades and tints.)
@@curtmuhlenberg9363 unless you're in the art or science field, black and white are colours, because let's be real... No one is calling them shades in every day language. If you're asked "what colour was the mugger wearing?" Are you going to stop and say "well, he wasn't wearing a colour.... He was wearing a shade"... The technicality is pointless for colloquial English.
@@iCantLogOut Every field is either an art or science field unless you're going into a service.
You nailed this makeover, I love it. Only tweak I would've done would've been to include "night stand" cubbies for the beds up top. Using some of that dead space below the septic line, I would make some box inserts into the wall between the outlet and the life saver floatation device, giving them a spot up top to place whatever they plug into the outlet, like how the queen bed has the shelf with the outlets.
You absolutely KILLED THIS MAKEOVER!!!! I honestly can’t remember how I came across your channel but as a new homeowner I’ve become more tuned in than ever and sure as hell glad I found it! Absolutely Amazing!!!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it! This was one my favorite renovations and video edits, so I’m glad you enjoyed it! More to come soon 😁
I love so much about this! The aesthetic, the big bed on the floor level, with all the additional sleep space. I think my only change would be having wood steps. Pipes are fine for ladders when I've got shoes on, but can be hard on bare feet.
Thank you so much and I appreciate the feedback!
Less is MORE!!!! I really like how there is nothing on the walls, clean , light & airy - Great space for a guest room - Wonderful work!!!
I totally agree! Thanks for watching 😁
I originally turned this on for background noise but ended up sitting and watching the entire thing. I really enjoyed your process, explanation, and the editing was top notch. Good job man, really inspires me to try and do improvements myself.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you enjoyed it and it inspired you 😁
Nice work. You have an incredible eye for design. I am not usually a fan of wood. But with the balance of the wall color, the dark woodwork and the lighting, it looks fantastic.
Thank you so much! I am a self-taught designer so sometimes I'm unsure of myself, but with each project I become more and more confident. Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the kind words!
Love this build, my kinky critique is building top of the carpet as now its near impossible to replace the flooring in the future without compromising the bed.
Thank you! We replaced the carpet just before this reno so we don’t plan on changing it anytime soon. You can replace the flooring and just shim the few points where the bed touches the ground. Also, I think cutting the carpet out from under bed before starting the build would have led to more headaches. I would need to install a ton of tack strips on top of the concrete subfloor which is never fun.
Good reuse and refinishing of the old wood panelling you took off the walls
Thank you!
Great design and execution! Nice addition to the overall theme. The lighting takes it over the top. Nice job reusing all that wood.
Thank you, I really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Love it! My kids would love the adult area and grandkids would love the bunk beds. Great conversion. I am in love with the industrial desk. I need one in my office/craft space!
Was an exciting way to watch each part of the tear down and new ‘construction’ take place. Thx much for the seemingly ‘speed of lightening’ move super quick. Much preferred over real time in many other projects.
The design with the upper beds was a winner. Also, like the roominess in the new bedroom. No doubt whoever occupies the spot will totally enjoy!!
Congrats on a job very well done!!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate all the kind words and f I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😁
I wouldn't change a thing. You really should be proud of yourself. That was a lot of work and it really turned out beautiful. Great job! I really enjoyed watching how someone can transform a space with such creative ideas.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😁
The layout of this project is nicely constructed. Very good instruction as well.
What you've done to the room looks quite bigger than before, good design!
Glad you think so!
Sir that was beautifully and masterfully done, I applaud you. If I may, I think the door should be painted to match the color of the old wood.
Thank you so much! And that’s a great idea!
Awesome build!!! Drill some holes under the twin beds on the plywood mattresses need to breath or they will get nasty
Thanks for the tip!
Loved it except I feel sorry for the people sleeping in there when someone flushes the toilet. Hearing it all going right past their head makes you rethink the vacation.
Thanks! And I added insulation around the pipe so you don’t hear it. Also, when people are sleeping, no one will be using toilets/sinks/showers anyway
It's a lake house.

That look incredible and I love that you reused the wood.
Thank you very much!
LOVE that you guys are getting more and more recognition each video. Keep working on these great work!
Thank you, really appreciate it!
Very creative design! I love how you accommodated 2 above and a Queen below. Plus, I’m coveting that amazing Christmas storage space. Tell your wife she’s lucky to have someone so handy.
I love, love, love this room. One thing though. The carpet. you built everything on top of it. So If you ever want to change it out for other flooring.... that could be a real pain. Love that you used the wood on the ceiling..... 1,000% better than that acoustical drop ceiling that was there before
I love that you reused the wood❤ Great job 😊
Thank you! 😊
Great remodel. One suggestion is to revisit the safety rails on the upper beds. You can read bed design codes. I like to keep spacing
Thank you and great point! Right now it’s just adults sleeping up there but I will add additional safety features once kids starting sleeping up there
This looks fantastic. The after is a lot better than the before. Well done and high five to you for the amount of work that you have put into this project.
Nice build! Great execution of your ideas for the room. Love the wood wrap.
Thank you! The wood wrapping around the room is one of my favorite parts of the room too!
Amazing!!! I love the industrial modern look! You're a talented man! ❤
Thank you so much!!
The sconces on the lights in the loft are SWEET!
Thank you, I love them too 😍
You could put a small 2 seater sofa or fouton on the wall near the room door. Or another table unit.
amazing use of space, you got a new subscriber... only thing I would change is the color of the door, it would look amazing in the dark paint that you used for the trim... great work
Thank you and welcome aboard! And that’s a great suggestion. I do want to eventually switch out all the doors in the basement similar to how I did the upstairs doors last year. Just didn’t have the time in this project. But I agree, the door kinda sticks out like a sore thumb 😂
You should get some of those glowing metal picture frame things for the more blank walls
Great idea!
Looks amazing love how you used all the old wood too ❤
Thank you so much 😊 Glad you like it!
Fantastic work!!!I would have painted the interior door black!!
Thank you! I think a black door would look better too - it’s on the list haha
This looks very nice. Love the layout for the beds and LED lighting.
Thank you so much!
Nice job. I think, i would have added a frame or something around the top mattresses to lock them in place.
Really, really nice. Gives me a great idea about my own basement if/when my grandddaughter moves out.
Brilliantly done. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Thank you so much 😊
I am going to try to attempt this! Wish me luck y'all!
Nice! You can do it!
I am not a diy-er or a renovator and dont even own a house, I rent an apartment. But I love watching makeover stuff or videos of people building or making things while I study or before I sleep. Just wanted to say I love how you made this video and how it was edited and really enjoyed it :) room looks amazing!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁 That’s actually how I started - I would watch lots of building and DIY content and then one day I decided to try it myself. The rest is history 😂 You should give it a go!
love the way everything came out too
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
how isnt he mad famous, he is soooo good.
Appreciate it!! The channel is continuing to grow 😁
The only change I would make (and it looks fabulous!) is paint that vent the same color as the wall.
Little John will be proud of you. Except that you forgot galvanize steel and screws borrowed from his aunt. And eco friendly wood.
This was just a great makeover. Only thing I would change is for the upper bed, to just have one long flush bed/mattress that would go all the way across instead of having two / or have 2 but no gaps. This would allow for taller and shorter people to share the space up there sleeping on opposite sides. Very well done
Thank you! I agree, but I would have had to have a custom mattress built for that to work. Mattresses only come in certain sizes and 2 twins worked best with only about a 5” gap in between
@@GoldenKeyDesign I like the gap, as a tall person I'm used to my heels sticking out past the end of the mattress, which just feels normal to me.... however two teenage boys might not like their feet touching!!!!
The gap might also help if one person moves around in their sleep. It will prevent movement from traveling to the other mattress. Also changing bed sheets would be a lot tougher.
@@abbaddon715 changing the sheets is gonna be hard enough without trying to change them on some 12' custom mattress!!!!!
Huge transformation! Awesome to see start to finish.
- That door falling at 3:04 was so satisfying haha
- Not the planer! That's definitely the route i would've gone to first, assuming scraping was out of the question for that much wood. I have my eye on one as well. Glad the wood worked out in the end. I love the wrapping going wall/ceiling/wall with drywall on the sides.
- Love the 8:21 drywall hit on beat. Too much fun to edit those in.
- So many small details that were well thought out (small trim pieces, electrical for bunk beds, blocking for pipe "handles"
- The lighting/focus/audio on your last shots of you sitting on the bed looked excellent and a big step up production quality wise. Maybe it's just the lighting in the room, but it was well done. Hard to incorporate that with seeing the project throughout a video, but it feels very professional.
- What do you use for LED switches? I haven't really played with them but have a project they'll fit nicely into.
Thank you so much! I always appreciate your thoughtful comments.
- door falling was one of my favorite parts too haha
- Yeah, scraping would have taken ages too. I honestly may have had a malfunction with my planer because it saw SO slow. Regardless, it had to be returned. But, I may still buy one in future when I have another project that requires it
- Glad you caught that. I spent a lot time on sound design for this video. I tried my best to make the music beats line up nicely with the video. If done well, most viewers don't even consciously notice, but still appreciate the quality of the production
- The thinking ahead aspect is probably the hardest part of each project for me. It takes a lot planning and forethought. You have to pretty much have the design locked in from day 1 of the project which makes things stressful, but it usually turns out very nice in the end
- You have a good eye! I actually upgraded cameras/lenses. The majority of the video was shot with my 10 year old entry level Nikon. The ending was shot on my new Sony A7IV with a nice wide angle lens. I also got new wireless mics and gimbal! I used the gimbal on some of the b roll shots. This purchase has been a long time coming and I'm excited to increase the production quality of the videos moving forward!
- I used standard switches (not anything LED specific). The key is that you get an LED driver. You run your 120v line to the driver and that outputs a low enough voltage to power the LEDs. As long as you use a driver, you can use any switch. I linked the one I used in the description. Dimmable drivers are usually much more expensive FYI, but I think they are worth the cost
Thanks again for watching and commenting!
Cool beans... but think about it,
If you ran the bunks along the wall but still up high, then you could have made the queen bed a MURPHY BED, and then had vertical space behind it for a stand up closet.
Long term storage under one bed and entrance to the closet under the other..
Nice work , really cool
Thanks and great idea!!
On The wall by the door that leads into the room I’d put a small table and chair for drinking coffee while reading a book or just to relax in.
Great idea!
You have a really great thought process! +1 for avoiding the Agreeable Grey color
NICE WORK! love the black and wood combo!
Thank you! Black and wood is now my favorite combo of colors/textures 😁
My favorite part is your wood,...... I mean , the woods you used building the bed. Nice makeover. Love it. 😊❤😅
Brilliant job, it's a shame that more people don't learn how to do things around the home, most haven't a clue. 🇦🇺
Youre so talented! I loved watching your video! Great Job!! Love the led's and the industrial look as well as your amazing use of the space and re-use of the wood. Very nice!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed the video!
This looks nice, I will most likely use this as inspiration when I remodel my daughter's basement. What I have issue with is the fact that you installed wood on top of carpet, my OCD is going crazy right now.... Also, for noise mitigation I would have installed fiberglass batts in the ceiling to deaden the floor above.
Looks great! Some thoughts: Those pipes are going to be uncomfortable for bare feet to climb. I'd suggest a ladder rebuild with wood and re-purposing the old ladder parts to make a couple of folding luggage racks. Throw a half dozen additional hangers onto the hanging space, and all luggage management needs will be met.
To make the room more welcoming: A wall mirror on the wall opposite the windows, to both increase light and provide a place for guests to check their appearances. A throw rug, a slimline upholstered armchair, and an ottoman using colors already in the room would be amazing, if you can fit them in. A place to sit that isn't the bed not only makes the room more classy and comfortable, it can also make a world of difference to older and/or less physically able guests to have options on where to sit when trying to manage their footwear.
If you get a lot of visitors you might want to look into some diffusors for the few LED strips. To my knoledge paper, spaced roughly 1cm off the strip with a basic encasing works wonders preventing the rough lights. Props for the room make over, fron germany.
Thank you! I actually did use diffusers on the top bunks. I installed the LEDs inside black metal rails with a slightly frosted white diffuser. Makes a huge difference! For the LEDs on the lower bed it wasn’t necessary as the wood strips I installed basically act as diffusers. Thanks for watching!
Love it only thing I would change would be to paint the bedroom door...maybe the black like the trim
Thank you! And great idea!
Just watched today 12/14/23 Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks 😊
I would add a curtain for the top beds so if someone is using the desk at night, the ones who sleep on the top could at least block the light out.
Great idea!
So cool I would definitely love to sleep there
Thanks! It's super comfortable!
Killed it for sure, thanks for sharing❤
Thank you 😊
A thousand percent better and it looks more modern and rustic if that makes sense.....
Thank you 😁 makes total sense!
This guy is a hard worker! That was a lot for one dude!
Thanks, I appreciate it 😁
very cool gave me some ideas for our basement reno
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁
I would've done some alternating tread stairs instead of ladders. And maybe would've done a double-double with under-bed desks/wardrobes and a center staircase.
Great ideas!
Looks great! one thing thou, you covered up your sewage pipe cleanout access. you might want to put in an access door if you ever need to access it to clean out a clog.
Thanks! It’s actually accessible from inside the closet under the beds 😁
Brilliant job, it's a shame that more people don't learn how to do things around the home, most haven't a clue. 🙃🇦🇺
Wow such a great Reno! Good job 👍 you should get beddies for those top bunks it would look super sleek.
Thank you! I haven’t heard of beddies before - gonna have to look into them 😁
@@GoldenKeyDesign oops it’s actually spelled beddy’s! They are zip up comforters. Just found your channel from this video I’m binge watching all your content now!
@@nicolldavis Wow, those look super nice and convenient! Thanks for the recommendation! And I'm glad you enjoy the videos - welcome aboard!
Room looks great. Was thinking about the ladders as you were doing it. Could have made them foldable so they are out of the way when not in use.
Awesome!I can relate to your sense of design.
tip for planing i know it take a while but i usualy run two boards thru at the same time with a decent cut nothing too deep were the planer starts struggling
Good to know, thanks for the tip!
what a great transformation!
Wow! A beautiful renovation! 🙌🏽
Thank you! 😁
Nice job!
Thank you!
Personally I can't see those ladders being comfy when you're barefoot at night if you need to get down. So I'd suggest making the ladder 'steps' flat rather than cylindrical. Aside from that, looks good!
I appreciate the feedback! They are actually pretty comfortable, but a flat step would probably be a bit nicer to step on.
Truly LOOKS FANTASTIC!!
Thank you ☺️
Terrific, so well done! No bars for bare feet I couldn’t even use it (looks cool though) and need someplace upstairs for your water or phone or eyeglasses or pills or retainer or… you know. Small shelf or cubby hole.
Awesome bro. Love the black trim!!
Thank you! I love the black trim too. I was a bit hesitant at first, but it turned out great!
Absolutely amazing!!!😊 Gave me great tips for my son's room. Keep up the excellent work !!!😊
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁
@@GoldenKeyDesign 😊
New for you new upgrades
Thanks!
Nicely done! Admittedly, it wouldn't be my personal preference for color palette (I tend to lean more towards either pale white-ish wood tones if I'm not painting wood or a pale grey driftwood-ish stain, along with cool blue range color tones with a single warm pop of either red or orange sprinkled around) but it still turned out really nice. As for the wood boards, try some bleach on the wood you deemed too dirty. You might be surprised.
Great job buy can you plz make a vedio organising all the rooms in your house plz plz plz plz plz plz ❤
We will see...
I wish I could have you design my room!
The design is such a fun part of the process but also very stressful 😅 these designs usually are the result of many iterations and several weeks of planning/forethought. You should give it a go! It’s a very rewarding experience when you get to see the design come to life 🤩
Looks good well done. Im not saying you should but this just a helpful tip for next time you could of used a nylon wheel on an angle grinder or a nylon wheel on the restorer n hit those boards just to clean them up then spray on an acrylic clear coat. But you do you again looks good.
Thanks for the tip!
Beautiful job!
Thank you!
Really beautiful work
Thanks a lot 😊
this might be weird but my favorite part was the drop ceiling being done
That was one of my favorite parts too 😁
Awesome build! I want to do this for my daughters room. ❤
Thank you! And that sounds awesome - good luck with the build!
Thank you.
that is absolutely sick!!!!
Thank you so much!
Watching u from the hospital you doing a fire 🔥 job hoping I can get you're views one day
Thanks for watching, appreciate it!
I think instead of two ladders, install a slide 😆 on one side. Kids would love it!
beautiful, the only thing im would change ,is putting a small head board between the top,bed and put the pillows on the inside, so I’m not putting feet over my pillows to get in bed,
Thank you and great idea!
finally someone who reuses materials
I try to reuse all that I can 😁
You are an artist, bro.
Thanks, really appreciate it 😁
Great. I love your work!
Thank you very much!
It is a good idea to cut holes in boards that are supporting mattresses to allow for some ventilation. If not possible it may be a good idea to advise users to lift the mattress to allow air to get to the base. (Having seen a few mouldy mattresses.)
Good point! I installed slats rather than a full sheet of plywood for that exact purpose. It allows for plenty of airflow
@@GoldenKeyDesign Great!
One of the best build . Well done mate ❤
Glad you like it!
Nice job man, love it
Thank you!
You did a fantastic job 👍🏾🇬🇧💙
Thank you! Cheers!
Great reno! Wondering how long it actually you from start to finish. You made it look pretty easy and quick, but I bet it wasnt
This is a very creative way to create a guestroom. How long do you edit your videos and what inspires you to create more?
Thank you! This video took about 30-40 hours to edit as there was a ton of footage. I love documenting my work so I can look back at it some day in the future and show my kiddos - plus it's fun to share it on UA-cam and interact with similar minded people
