In the longest Remake or Rebreak episode to date, I offer a thoroughly comprehensive review of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, with an emphasis on version comparison. This video didn't quite break the 60 minute mark, but I think you should probably get something to eat anyway.

Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Re-Meh: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Additionally, a Re-Meh may not address the original's salient issues or fail to add anything meaningful.
3- Remake: As good or even slightly better than the original, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own that version. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original.
4- Replace: A remake/port that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it renders the original virtually obsolete. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of new content. - Ігри
I grew up with the DS version.. and let me say I was not disappointed I played COUNTLESS hours of it

Something worth mentioning when you compared graphics:
Mario's DS model actually has less polygons than on the N64, yet still looks better, so that helps your argument that the DS version looks better.
How does that even work.
It's dead obvious that the model would have more polys, so that really surprised me.

I grew up with the DS version, so going back to the original was a real shock to me graphically. Especially looking at Bower's model and his footsteps 🤣
I only played about an hour of the DS, but I grew up heavily with the 64 version and beat it so many times as a kid and almost got every star. When I got 3D All Stars I was also shocked at how terrible the camera controls were and had a lot of trouble getting stars I had no problem with as a child or even teenager.

The funny thing is that some people complain about something frustrating or complicated in sm64, but when it gets fixed in the ds remake they complain because it's too easy

It is almost like fixing that thing AND giving you a character like Yoshi forced by default makes it too easy.
To even feel the fix as Mario you actively have to go out of your way to get Mario and choose to play as him.
After playing as Yoshi for awhile.
There is a healthy balance, when you do 50 things at once it will almost always be overkill.

Unfortunately, the game HAS TO kick you out upon collecting a star, because SOMETIMES the level changes depending on the mission selected, like Koopa the Quick and some bosses' sawning, the ship in JRB, the snowman's body in Cool Cool Mountain, etc. It's kind of a half-baked idea, fully realized in Sunshine.
I think the only stars that don't kick you out are the ones that you get after getting 100 coins.

That means the DS version is just more efficient.
The DS aversion looks better though because:
A. A lower resolution hides the polygonal look.
B. The textures aren’t “fill tool red” or “fill tool white” like the original.
The DS remake was the version of SM64 I grew up with, especially that the Wii and DS were the prime selling Nintendo consoles of the time. I got a DS in 2010 and was able to get the DS version easily. Comparing the quality and amount of content in each of the games, I still believe the DS remake is far better.
Same with what I got, so when I played the original game i didn’t enjoy it like I did with the DS version.
@@bN_isheeere The D-Pad is definitely an issue, but I think it's worth pointing out how other people can point at outdated aspects of the original N64 game and still say the game's good in spite of them, despite a notable portion of the younger generation disagreeing.
It's one of those limitations that, if you grew up with it, is unlikely to come across as bad to you.
I definitely have memories of trying to juggle the various control options in SM64DS, because none of them felt quite right, but eventually I got there, and I was able to consider it the better game despite having been there when the original game released (and renting the hell out of an N64 to play it). And things got way better when I got to replay the game on the 3DS, with an analog stick.

Mario 64 DS can be used on the 3DS and it amazing because you don’t need the Dpad
The Amazing Clockwork Knights but that doesn’t change the fact the game isn’t built with control stick in mind since the DS didn’t have one, so you’re limited to 8 directions anyway. Not to mention you still have to press Y to run.
Honestly, on 3DS it’s just a bit better, nothing more.

but the ds version got locked into eight because d pad and a 3ds control stick doesn't automatically make it 360 degrees, because the game was designed with eight directions for that port

An example for such a game would be metroid other m or links awakening remake. 64ds features gradual turning which allows 360° movement with just a dpad. Its the same way spyro the dragon has 360° movement on the ps1 with just a dpad

If people can deal with the PS1 games that did have analog support but dont have the dual shock and have to use a D pad for those games, why dont I hear them complain? It makes me think it's a big case of no analog stick no play! And that's honestly really dumb considering how much was added.
I’m just lucky I grew up nostalgic for the DS remake meaning that this was my always preferred choice.
kingvideogames I bought my N64 DS cartridge in junior high school from my friend and I enjoyed it a lot. Haven't tried the original yet though but maybe I should just to see if I really agree with all of these views on this video by having authentic gaming experince of both.
Edit: Probably I should have an authentic N64 controller to justify my experience instead of emulator. I should ask from a friend to loan his retro N64 if he has SM64 on it.

I might even argue that Odyssey is more of a collectathon than SM64 was. The coins actually unlock content, and Stars are literally something you collect in the world more often.

I love my collectathons! Rayman has been great fun. Super Mario Run has been great as well but just too chaotic and I feel like I'm grinding playing it to collect everything. Not too many recent games that follow that formula unfortunately.

Everytime I go back to this review, I never care how old this video is. I just ache hearing how hard the comments made you feel about your intro segments.
But then you turn it around, pick the momentum back up and pull off a fantastic analysis of SM64's two versions. DS for the win, heck they brought back Yoshi when he was planned as a crucial lead player focus in the first place! Based on that alone as a call back, I could tell it was a remake treated well.
But again I'd hate to see the effort you go to tarnished by people who try to tear you down. In more recent reviews I've seen you take the camera away but keep the flair-filled intros, and I'm glad you stuck to your guns and kept to what comes naturally. So just coming back here for the virtual hug I suppose.
Doesn't it suck when children learn a new word. I've always enjoyed a scripted video more than an unscripted one. It's why I don't care about podcasts. They just feel so lazy and makes me think if I'm gonna support someone, it's gonna be the one putting in the effort.

If I’m going to be honest the ds mario games are underrated, with the exception of mkds. Nsmbds is seen to most people as just another new super Mario bros game, no one talks about mario party ds and almost no one I’ve talked to has heard of mario vs donkey Kong 2 march of the minis, it had a level editor like super Mario maker.

Plot Twist: Luigi is just an alter ego of Mario, and doesn't actually exist. Thats why at the end of Super Mario World the end cutscene reads, "Mario's adventure is over. Mario, the Princess, Yoshi, and his friends are going to take a vacation." This also explains the "L is real" thing in 64. Thats Mario trying to cope with living a double life.

Wow, the ending to this Remake or Rebreak shocked me. I expected at most a "Remake" but mostly expected "Re-Meh", and I was pleasantly shocked, since the DS remake is one of my favorite Mario games of all time.

64 DS has incredible extra content, and it really outdid itself with that. I would've marked it as remake instead of remake, because it doesn't feel as fluid, control wise.

@@gaben9224 But that would raise the price. Also, the fact that Super Mario 64 is an old and outdated game feels like a $20 game, and 3 $20 games equal $60. Plus, Nintendo would be forced to make a new accessory for the Nintendo Switch for two screens gameplay. And each game is supposed to work on the TV. How would the touch screen parts work on the Nintendo Switch if there's only one screen? And also, there are mini-games which would be too much for a remaster collection.
So lame that this game is not even getting widescreen on 3D All Stars. 😞

Wario gets less damage from everything but falling. He makes more damage to pretty much any enemy and Boss, which means you only need to hit certain Mini-Bosses like Boos only twice instead if 3 times :)
And he can pick up signs. Just punch the back.

If you play SM64DS on an R4, I think there is a Virtual D-pad patch that you can use. I know there is a patch for Mario Kart DS.

for me when you're kicked out the level after completing a star, it makes me get a sense of completion. instead of a sense of going from point a to point b.

My single problem with SM64DS is that your character defaults to walking. I really wish there was an option to run as default and set the 'RUN' button to a 'WALK' button instead.
Other than that, I totally love the game.

I disagree. I've tried using the 3DS circle pad. Moving it around when wanting to turn either doesn't do anything other than walk forward or activates the diagonal input and I can't tell when that transition is made because it's a circle pad. I'd honestly just much rather use the D-pad.

I don't use wireless, i HATE wireless controllers they're a pain in the ass dying all the time, i have a wired Xbox 360 controller and all you do is plug and play.

I am a new fan and have really enjoyed all of your RoR videos, I felt sad learning about your introspection on how you viewed your earlier videos and also the feedback from some viewers. If you were unhappy with your development process then I can understand wanting to change things up. I know I'm 5 years late here but I think you're awesome and I look forward to future videos.

By the way; one last thing of note. I recorded the N64 version off of the original hardware with S-Video, so I played the game with the original controller. I played a little bit of the Wii U port just to show it off for the review, and I swear the controls feel worse than they do on the original hardware. If your only exposure to the N64 controls is through Virtual Console, that could possibly explain any difficulties you might have with them.

ExoParadigmGamer The Wii U issues are due to a weird thing with controller dead zones, it makes F-Zero X pretty much unplayable unfortunately
Wii U version not only has bad controller deadzones, but Wii U VC has an awful input delay that ruins NES, SNES, and N64 VC games and makes them borderline unplayable. This lag is not present in Wii VC games, even when played on Wii U (just in case anyone was planning to tell me it's just my TV causing lag, it's not).
I did some testing and the Wii U VC version of all N64 games have some noticeable input lag. Its pretty minor, and for someone like me its easy to adjust too, but I can imagine it being a nightmare for others.
Definitely depends on the game too. I actually quite enjoyed Mario 64 on there, but F-Zero was just ridiculous without those. I've complete FAST Racing Neo 100% and beaten most of F-Zero GX, and F-Zero X was borderline unplayable as the attack command wouldn't really work and you couldn't make any kind of subtle steering adjustments. Quite a shame too, because it looks much better than even playing on my CRT
Honestly I remember the controls working perfectly, I can boot this game up if anyone wants to challenge that but I think they did a great job implementing the D-pad.
Same. The shoulder buttons, abyx, and d pad worked great for me. I just didn't like that I had to quickly removed my right thumb from the abyx to turn the camera

If by chance you plan on doing more Remake or Rebreak reviews how about reviewing Resident Evil 1 for PS1 and the gamecube/HD remake. It deserves to be reviewed it's an amazing remake.
I'll admit, playing it now on the Switch the game is showing it's age and it feels antiquated. The camera is driving me nuts. I had way too many "d'oh" deaths because of it. Maybe I will revisit the 3DS version after playing through the original on the Switch. Maybe one day we'll get another remake of the game with better graphics, camera, and controls.

Sure, the circle pad is a thing but it's just emulating the dpad in DS mode.

Knowing about Super Mario odyssey I believe that collectathons may be coming back seeing as yes, odyssey has a story that requires point A to B and off to the net kingdom. But when you return to the kingdoms. You get tons of moons and purple coins to grab. And Nintendo knows they are going back to SM64’s gameplay style. Seeing as they implemented loads of Easter eggs in odyssey and even requirements to find these references. So I am happy that we are going back to its roots in SM64

its realy a get used to it kind of thing. They just feel different, but once you get used to it, its fine. (I use the D-Pad mode, the pen mode is precise, but its a bit weird)
I honestly don’t mind the controls in Mario 64 DS. In fact I’m so used to them since I grew up with the game & it has a much better camera
NFN//NintendoFanNetwork 2018 However, most of those extra moons are just fillers because they are just simple objectives that come out of nowhere in close proximity to each other.
As someone who recently replayed the game in anticipation of odyssey, I recommend to anyone playing on the DS cartridge to use a 3ds if you have one. Even with my broken circle pad, the controls felt better, even for me, someone who has never touched the N64 version in their life. It's a great game though, and I only need one reason. It's just fun.

Even when playing this game on the 3DS, I still use the d-pad to control the game.

This was a thorough and thoughtfully done video! I just picked up another DS Lite, having lost my original after years and several moves. I've never played Mario 64 in any format, and this port has really piqued my interest - I will definitely be picking it up!
I also picked up my childhood favorites: N+, Tetris DS, Picross DS, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Namco Museum, Phantom Hourglass, and Guitar Hero: On Tour+Decades. I am enjoying having the system again. It really has a diverse library, with games for everybody to enjoy.
I like how this man speaks with power and clarity. I've watched too many youtubers who speak so meekly, dare I say lazily, and in true youtube fashion the unpolishedness of it can be charming, but having a strong and clear speaking voice is much better. When he talks I actually can understand what he's saying as he speaks with meter, power and clarity unlike Scott the Woz. As much as I like Scott's content, the way he speaks so quickly is a flaw as he cuts his syllables short. I like this kind of presentation better, good job man.
Someone finally agrees with me on Star Road. The game is cool but the level design does not match the flawed controls. I only got partway through before I gave up.

64 DS was so fun to play when I was a kid. The kids at this daycare I went to had a copy and I remember we would all play multi-player, glitching to enter the cannon and just have a good time chilling on the roof

Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS were some of my favourite video games growing up and I thoroughly enjoyed how you talked about them and the collect-a-thon subgenre of 3D platformers. Personally, I love collect-a-thons because they have a unique charm to them. For example, Super Mario Odyssey is a collect-a-thon and is one of my favourite video games on the Nintendo Switch. I'd love to see the collect-a-thon make a comeback because there's so much you can do in them that you can spend hours looking for every single little secret.

I love that sm64 ds is more modernized. It has a different model for Bowser, boos, and thwomps, which makes it look more modern similarly to modern Mario games unlike sm64, which has models that look a little wierd

I prefer the N64 original, HOWEVER it's purely out of retro appeal and nostalgia. Mario 64 is a game close to my heart, but it hasn't aged well, it needed the remake it got, I would even say it deserved that remake. Mario 64DS stands as an excellent game in its own right, and while I don't love every change it made, it is a must own title for any platformer enthusiast.

Brilliant, my thoughts exactly and so much more. Growing up with this game instead of SM64 has definitely biased me but i could never understand preferring the original beyond nostalgia. If the speedrunning community for this game was DS and not N64 I'd imagine it'd be even better than it already is.
This is a magnificent review and overall look on both the DS and 64 games; for me personally I have never considered the DS version because I just didn't feel the appeal of it, I never not wanted to play the game because of bias, just appeal.Because of you, I actually want to pick up the game now and play it through, thank you.

I am unsure if anything I do will ever be stupider than the time I spent hours playing Mad Musical Mess on stream, sleep deprived to make it worse. Now that I am better at Mario 64 controls it isn't that bad but the skill needed to breeze through it is part of the problem.

Oh boy Sunshine is... probably my favorite 3D Mario game.
Despite the toll booth/mission problem exacerbated there, F.L.U.D.D. just seems to make it so much fun.
I remember replaying the final boss over and over, was really sad it wasn't back as a power-up in Galaxy.

I don't even consider 64/Sunshine/Galaxies to be Super Mario Bros. games, they're just too different.
