EPGR: Why Super Mario Sunshine (GCN) Is Even Better in 2017

  • In this latest review from cuck contrarian EPG, I tackle a Mario game with something of a mixed reputation: 2002's Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo GameCube. Do people mostly love this game? Hate it? Honestly, I don't really know. That said, I think many of the criticisms are worth examining in my brand of oversized videos. I also briefly address the possibility of an official HD remaster of Super Mario Sunshine HD from Nintendo.
    Enjoy!

There's an extremely easy way to do the watermelon mission that no one mentions. The plants that you use to defeat the giant Wiggler can kill Cataquacks, so just kill all the ones on the lower beach, then push the watermelon down the cliff to get it quickly down there, then push it carefully to the hut. Took me one try, and 10-15 minutes.

I love Mario Sunshine to pieces. In general, the GameCube is tied for being my favorite Nintendo console with the original NES and a large part of that is because that was the generation where they experimented and did things that were completely different than what came before. Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Pokemon Colosseum, Star Fox Adventures, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, the list goes on.

As much as I love the Gamecube and love it more than the N64, the gaming historian in me can't approve of calling the GC more experimental than the N64, the system which truly spearheaded 3D graphics. It was a BIG DEAL at the time, and more than any other generation, the N64 and its games were incomparably different than anything that came before. The Gamecube improved the 3D foundations of the N64, but it could never represent a more experimental or newer step into the third dimension than the N64. Every new console after N64 has been less different to the N64 than the N64 was to the SNES. You can't get a bigger leap than SNES to N64. The extra dimension of space was too great an innovation.

@The T.C. Nintendo easily has the resources to do a full remake, they just don’t want to. Especially since they are bundling 3 games together, this is generous by their standards. I’m surprised they aren’t selling Sunshine alone for $60.

@@justinc.5591 "easily" is a bit misleading. Sure they have the resources/manpower to do so, but what would the ROI be? Sure, the more hardcore Nintendo fans would buy it regardless and probably a good chunk of people who never played it on GC, but there's also a huge chunk of people who would just dismiss it as a "remake" or people who've already played/own the GC version so don't want to buy it again.
The time/money/effort needed to make a sparkling fresh HD remake of Sunshine is better spent on other projects because those will net more money. Nintendo is a business, after all.

I really like your review of this game. I pretty much have the same opinion when it comes to this game. Although you did have a couple mistakes (but hey you're only human).
1st is the tropical outfit, you actually get that after you've beaten BOWSER. It's a common mistake that I see a lot, and it's not that big of a deal.
The second thing is a glitch that makes the underwater sections (Red Coin bottle, Eel dentist, and Red Coin Fish) ten times better. All you need to do is go to "first-person mode", and you can do it at any point in these levels, it makes you turn a heck of a lot better, and it'll let you aim vertically. The only problem is that you can't move the camera or your character, so you'll need to get off "first-person mode" if you want to do that.
Hope this massive text didn't discourage you. (I always make theses explanation really long; though they are somewhat detailed)

    THANK YOU.
Someone else who acknowledges the memorable NPCs and the passage of time over the 8 episodes. That's honestly one of my favorite things about Sunshine. I really like the Blue Coins also, aside from the small bunch of cryptic ones that really gave me issues on my first run and my first run alone. They gave me a good incentive to explore levels and talk to NPCs (as some of them give you hints on how to get some, like the guy who says to spray windmills to make them go faster in Bianco hills, or the lady who hints to spray at the moon in episode 5 of Pianta Village,) as I did them, instead of just going from point A to point B and not exploring at all. In my most recent run, I was surprised how easy it was to get all thirty or close to that just by exploring alone.
Also. Yes. Secret of the Village Underside difficulty is heavily overexaggerated. Really it's just the last Pianta who's kinda hard to line up (since you talk to him from the side.) And that the 100 Coin shines in general are just a fair bit better than 64 thanks to a lack of bottomless pits and the stages themselves are generally more forgiving in having less with BARELY enough coins to achieve that 100 coin mark, according to the official Nintendo Power guide, you can get 100 coins in all episodes of Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor and Gelato Beach, all but 1, 2 or 3 obvious shines in Noki Bay, Sirena Beach and Pinna Park, making the "you need to know a specific shine" complaints, very overexaggerated when only Pianta Village sort of holds true with that (where you need to pick episode, 1, 3 or 5.)
Also, to correct you. Gooper Blooper 2 in Ricco Harbor does have a spinning tentacle attack that 1 and 3 do not. The alternate costume is given from beating Bowser at the end. Not from 100% (though that does mean you can wear it while you gather blue coins.)

Super Mario Sunshine is my all time favorite Mario game and sits pretty in my top 10 favorite games. To see you give it such an excellent review that reeks of thought, honesty, passion, and plenty of effort just feels good to watch. You took it's complaints head-on, accepted the ones you really couldn't counter, debunked those that you could, and actually turned some of them into positive points with your own unique perspective on the situation. Not only that, but some of your comments actually made me realize things I loved about the game that I never could put my foot on (e.g. the mini plots of each level and why I enjoy completing this game). Yes, you perfectly described what's great about this game's level design: every main level is completely open. Instead of being presented a way to go through a series of incoherent platforms, you're being thrown in an open section with no clear path to the shine. It's up to you to find a way to the objective and often, there's more than one. It adds a lot of replay value and its quite satisfying to figure out the fastest route.
And my gosh would I be looking forward for a complete remake of this game on the Switch, with enhanced visuals, more setpieces, the five deleted levels, an actual final ''Bowser themed'' level and boss fight that would not be complete trash and plenty more bonus content, like unlockable clothes and costumes, being able to fly in a helicopter around the island and so on. I feel like a ''Mario Sunshine Deluxe'' would be the most logical choice for a Mario game to release after Odyssey. They are just so similar... open world levels, setpieces we can interact with, really good controls... but yeah, Sunshine has been receiving so much hate from the fans, it is unlikely for Nintendo to go back to it... *sigh* and that's depressing.

The issue with blue coins isn't that only 30% of them are obscure, it's that a significant margin of them are
If only one or two of them were obscure then they'd be well known for being that way, but if you're going for 100% you're going to have to encounter them all with no exception.
And the note about "Is it really that bad to look up a few blue coins?", well, yeah, it is. The designers should hide the coins with the intent to be found, not given up on and told externally.

  • @ShyGuyXXL
    @ShyGuyXXL 7 років тому +15

I just wish there was SOME kind of indication for the most obscure blue coins. Like, when you have to spray a random bit of wall in Ricco Harbor, or spray a random empty shelf or lamp in the Hotel, or spray a random signpost in pianta village, why not put a tiny blue blotch of paint on them?
That way you still have to pay attention and look for the coins but you don't have to potentially spray every last bit of level geometry like a madman.
And yes, show me in which missions I'm still missing coins. I don't wanna have to check every last polygon IN 8 DIFFERENT MISSIONS!
The game should not rely on online blue coin guides.

the mudboat is split into 2 sections, the front and the back. the controls are opposite to each other depending on where you stand on the boat. For example, spraying right at the front of the boat will turn the boat counter clockwise, and spraying right from the back of the boat will spin the boat clockwise.

Common mistake with regards to Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (around 40:00 in the video):
When you get the permanent Super Fire in Dragon Shores, if you turn the game off and back on, go to that save slot in the main menu (1, 2, or 3), delete your save, and then start over in the same slot, you can play through the whole game again with the Super Fire

Okay, so having watched you play some of this game at Twitch, I think this review is a little biased. You are clearly very experienced with the game, which likely means you're no longer experiencing some of the frustrations that people have with this game. Especially in the case of blue coins, which you were finding so quickly, it was almost as though you were doing a speed run.
From the perspective of someone who doesn't know where all the blue coins are, you basically have to re-explore the entire level every episode because some might've popped up where you couldn't find them, before. That is tedious. Even worse if you missed one, in which case you have to go through every episode to find it, because the game tells you how many you've collected from the levels but not from which episodes.

YES! YES! YES! Thank you sooo much! You have said everything I have been trying to say for years! Super Mario Sunshine is my absolute favorite 3D Mario game for all the reasons you so expertly explained. The only opinion I have that would contradict yours is that blue coins are not my favorite sidequest. I certainly don't dislike them - heck, I even find it rather enjoyable to collect them - but I wouldn't go as far as to say they're my favorite. Aside from that, I agree with everything else you've said, and you've definitely done justice to this fantastic game. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next video.

You know what would fix the blue coin problem? A checklist! There is a status screen in the game so I have no idea why they didn't think of that. If you could see you have found, let's say 17/30 blue coins in one world, you'd know where to look for them and it's way easier keeping track of which ones you've got on your current playthrough. Also, some players who play the game for the first time might spend some blue coins before getting all of them. And those stars are displayed as hidden stars on the stats screen. So it's hard to tell if the missing stars are hidden stars you haven't found or 10 blue coins you've missed. Splitting them up on the stats screen would also make that a lot easier. Because that's what I did on my first playthrough. I couldn't remember if I actually did the poison river one and there were a few stars left. So I went into every world never knowing how many blue coins are left in it and often times I had no idea where to look for them and how many are actually left to find. Having a checklist would have made that so much easier!

Loroks are worse, as they impact the gameplay by being unlocks for inventory upgrades. Blue coins only count for non-critical Shines, and the only thing getting them all unlocks is the final ending, which IIRC is like one CGI image. You can ignore them completely if you aren't interested.

Sunshine is my favorite among the 3D platformers. The focused theme, the voice acting (a rare occurrence for me until I started Final Fantasy games), and the well working camera seal the deal. It may seem odd to take away Mario's punch, kick, and long jump, but with FLUDD they would be redundant. FLUDD is one of my favorite robot voices. The final boss is hit or miss, but at least it was more in line with the axing-the-bridge concept, because it is implausible for someone of Mario's size to beat Bowser (who was gigantic in that tub) in a fistfight. The Mecha-Bowser Rollercoaster fight is one of the most memorable boss battles in any game for me.
I would enjoy an HD remake, though I wouldn't mind 64 getting a Switch version first. Throwback Galaxy was such a tease. I was disheartened by the absence of Isle Delfino in Odyssey, even a "watered-down" (LOL) representation would have been appreciated.

One thing I would change: Sunshine's controls are not just the best of 3d mario games, but of 3d platformers period. The reason I love this game so much is because I feel so godly with the fludd. I have yet to play another game that offers the freedom and precision of movement Sunshine does. It's friendly towards new-comers but heavily rewards skill. I would love to have a remake on Switch.

  • @CleaveTheDragon
    @CleaveTheDragon 7 років тому +53

A lot of your statements about the game's difficulty come from fore-knowledge; as you've said, you've played the game to completion 7-8 times. That's over 7-8 times more than the average person has dedicated to the game, and most statements regarding difficulty are coming from their first time to it; which is generally the peak of how difficult that part of a game can be for that person. "It's easy to collect 100 coins when you know what to do" is not a good argument because it ignores the process of finding that out, which, for a lot of players, results in trial in error to discover which episode/location gives the most coins. Comparing the levels to Mario 64 the levels are more complex and coins feel more spaced out because of it. There are people who play Pinna Park, go to the carnival first, look for all the immediate coins, realize they may have missed some on the beach, and try to leave only to discover the game won't let them back out, go back to the carnival to look for every other coin they can find, and discover that there's not enough, that they wasted their time and have to start over. *This is bad design, as it's not something they would be thinking about when first doing it.*
Hey, If you know all the actions and timing it takes to beat Battletoads, it's actually not that hard! I guess battletoads is an easy game now and everyone's been overexaggerating it this whole time!
What your analysis here is missing is look at these challenges from the perspective of someone figuring it out, not someone that already knows what to do. When you say there's 30 hidden blue coins in a stage and those blue coins can be contextualized by the current episode, the actions a person has to exhaust to find all of them sans a guide makes for a less interesting time. "15% coins are obscure" might not seem much to you, but it means that sooner rather than later a player will come across a point where they did everything they thought to do in a level, find 29 blue coins and get all the shine sprites, scour again and again and not find that last coin, despite their honest effort. At that point, the good will towards 100% completion is in jeopardy.
Considering the Pinna park thing and the eventual experiences that there is at least some coins that are hidden by episodes: It doesn't matter what you **already know is the actual amount**. The player experiencing the game for the first time **doesn't know that**. They don't know how many coins are going to be obscure but when you find at least 3 coins that are hidden that way, you gotta assume that *any one you can't find immediately* are like that because you have no idea what the rest of the coins are like, forcing you play the level in a way that's not something most people readily enjoy.
"If something looks out of place, just spray it! It's that simple." Then they wouldn't be complaining about it, now would they? I'm not saying you shouldn't find something fun that you find fun, but because of the way Sunshine is laid out, it limits the number of playstyles that people have towards it. There are people who prefer not having to look up a guide for 100%, and there are people who don't mind. Sunshine is not a game that allows both of these people to be happy.
I had fun with sunshine myself, but I didn't do 100%, like I did with Galaxy 1/2, and 64. The reason more people hold those games in a higher regard is because those games' designs regard more people.

Well your perspective is just someone who doesn't want to put in a lot of work to get 100%. Fully completing a game should be a challenging, and naturally tedious the first time. If it was easy it wouldn't feel special doing it. Even as a kid I did not have much trouble figuring out which episodes had the most coins. Finding all of the blue coins is frustrating though, but I don't see how it's any different from 100% any other game that has collectible items. Blue coins and 100 gold coins sprites are all optional, not required to be the game.

I couldn't have said it better. In fact, I was writing and re-writing a comment for this video some minutes ago before giving up, but here you said what I wanted and much more.
I finished 100%ing this game yesterday, and as someone that despises looking up guides, I felt immensely frustrated when searching the last 2 blue coins for each level.
I couldn't find them, and when I did look for a guide, I felt infuriated for some of them (like the Ricco harbor one that had you spraying a random section of the brick wall near the tower with the secret) because really, how would someone find some of these normally?
Another flaw that I see in Sunshine's design is that 79 shines are entirely optional!
One of the most fun things from Mario 64 is that you could use your skills in exploring the world in order to progress through the game, and you had the ability to focus on clearing your favorite levels out, while grabbing little to no stars in your least favorite levels, while also adding some secret stars to the mix, all of which made reaching the final level a very versatile experience, but sunshine threw that out of the window for no good reason.
EPG said that it was forgivable because it works well with the story of the game, but in my perspective, the case is that the story of the game is crippling its versatile design, and since the story is nowhere near to being a selling point, this gets to be an overall bad design decision.
This is coming from someone that's studying for a bachelor's in game design. I hold the opinion that unless your intention is to make a niche game, (looking at you, dark souls) a well-designed game is a game that tries to cater to every person that doesn't dislike the game's genre.
I also had fun with sunshine, and since I aim for a collectathon-based experience in my 3d Mario games, I actually rank it second in between them, losing only to Mario 64. But the game has some severe flaws, and in a more critical perspective, I see it as the weakest 3d Mario title.

      - Damn, excellent analysis. I think this criticism extends to a lot of Sunshine's gameplay. I just finished playing through it for the very first time, and there were definitely shines I had to look up the walkthrough just to know what I was supposed to do. Whether that's because of not adequately teaching play mechanics (the Boo boss fight in the casino), hidden controls (knowing to pick up the chain chomp's tail and not try and break it), or wonky hit boxes, the game just has way too much frustration for me, and probably a lot of average players. There's no checkpoints, which made me ragequit years ago in the waterfall stage after falling all the way down one to many times, and a lot of sections the camera is HORRIBLE (climbing to the ferris wheel). People who've played this game a lot know how to get around them, but for the average player, it's more likely they'll have problems. So yeah, good comment XD

I completely agree with this. I typically love watching EPG’s videos, and I agree mostly with this one too (as I do enjoy the game), but I think your comment he completely missed the mark on, and tried a little too hard to prove a point (using percentages to prove a point about blue coins). EPG was thinking completely in terms of 100% completion, not the players first time playing where 100% may not be their goal at the time.
When I first jumped into the game, I noticed the structure of the game was similar that of Mario 64 (it is its sequel you know). Both games have a hud world, different levels to jump into, with the ultimate goal of collecting a shine/star. And being that this is a collectathon, you would expect the number of shines in your inventory matters in terms of beating the game, but it doesn’t. Now you do have to collect shines to beat the game, but it’s the particular shines you collect that matter, not how many. As I did jump straight from Mario 64, and its hinted in the beginning of this game, I thought the emergency system text hinting where to go next was a response of how many I just collected. So I kept collecting. Which leads me to one of my biggest gripes with the game, the game never hints to you that numbers don’t matter. It doesn’t tell you which shines are the triggers, it doesn’t tell you isle delphino shines or blue coins don’t help beat the game, it doesn’t tell you you have to fight shadow Mario 7 freaking times to fight bowser. I was thoroughly pissed when I read online that half the stuff I did wasn’t helping me progress. I didn’t want to 100% the game at that time I just wanted to beat it. If I thoroughly enjoyed the game enough to 100% it, then I would.
I’ve never had a game do this to me so obliviously. Typically, the more you collect, the more you progress by either upgrades or something similar. In Metroid, the more you collect the stronger you get. In DKC2, the more bonus coins you get the more extra levels you get to play. Here, collecting extra shines doesn’t help you at all during your adventure.
There is no better example than the blue coins. I have no issue that they exist how they are (though they could have been implemented better, a simple menu showing how many you need in each episode of a level would have been enough), my biggest issue is your reward for getting them. Why get a shine for 10 blue coins that don’t help you proceed in the game? Why not use the blue coins for something like fludd upgrades or to unlock more special stages? That means the ONLY use for the 240 blue coins is to 100% the game, that’s it… either collect them all or don’t bother with any of them.
And that’s a shame cause blue coins had potential. This whole game had better potential, which is why I wrote this long comment. I really think this game had the potential of being the best 3D Mario game if they would put more thought into the details. Maybe a sequel is in order that wouldn’t be rushed.

I feel Sunshine's biggest problem is the progression system.
So, 64 had a pretty great progression system. You beat levels by completing an objective, which rewards you with a Power Star. Every main level had 7 Stars which you could (mostly) do in any order, and your progression was based on the amount of Stars you have. Of the total 120 Stars, you only needed 70 to beat the game, leaving 50 Stars that you don't have to collect.
Because of this, you have a lot of freedom with how you want to approach the game. In fact, the only levels that are actually required to play besides the Bowser levels are Bob-Omb Battlefield (since it's the only one available when you start) and Dire Dire Docks (since you need to play it to get to the second Bowser level.) Every other level could potentially be optional. Like, If you're thorough with the first two areas, you'll have enough Stars to skip area 3 entirely and just go straight to the final boss.
So, compare that to Sunshine. Like 64, you beat levels by completing an objective, which rewards you with a Shine Sprite. Now, in 64 there was a total of 120 Stars, only 70 of which are needed to beat the game.
Sunshine has a total of 120 Shines, but do you know how many are needed to beat the game? Technically speaking, only 7. The only Shines that are needed to beat the game are the Shadow Mario missions. That means any shines that aren't the Shadow Mario missions, or unlock the Shadow Mario missions, are completely worthless outside of 100% There are 7 levels, and Shadow Mario is always the 7th mission. You have to do each mission in order to unlock the next. So all that plus the Shine from Delfino Airstrip, means that only 50 Shines are required to beat the game all coming from those specific missions.
*More than half of the Shines in the game are worth jack shit.*

We can say the same thing about 64 if you didn't like the missions. Sunshine progression is almost as good as 64. The only problem is you have to complete the missions in order, so you don't have the freedom of completing the mission you want as in 64

Mau Pr What are you talking about?
If you didn’t like a mission in 64, you had the freedom to just play another mission instead. In Sunshine, you *have* to play required missions in the same order, whether you like them or not. Having required missions like Sunshine does also makes any non-required missions completely pointless, since your Shine count in Sunshine is meaningless.

How about you do an ROR on DKC GBC finally? It'll even fit in your idea of doing RORs on less-than stellar remakes! Come on, we've been waiting for forever since the DKC3 ROR!
