12:02 the movement in 3D World is actually restricted to 8 directions regardless of whether you use a D-Pad or not, so an analog stick causing you to sway at that part is very weird
From my brief testing with 3d world's controls, at least on the Switch version, your movement defaults to 8 directions but isn't restricted to that necessarily. I think how it worked was if you were already holding a direction with a joystick and Mario was moving in one of the 8 directions, you could make a minor adjustment with the stick and cause Mario's course to change to a direction that's not one of the 8, rather than him just always locking to only the 8.
This is actually because Luigi's movement is "looser" in the sense that he's less restricted to the 8 directions a Directional Pad can input. It's a very subtle change Nintendo made to make him feel more slippery that not a lot of people know about. The above reply still applies, however.
That isn't fully true. In the Wii U version, movements only have a maximum of 8 directions despite the controller being used. However on Switch, they unlocked movements letting you move in more than 8 directions (which is what you're seeing in the video)
funny thing, that's because they used an updated version of the physics engine from odyssey. Odyssey was originally built off of 3D world movement but they unlocked the stick for the sandbox areas.
I remember as a kid finding the hidden power star in the mirror room by going through the mirror as Luigi and heading through the door, I was absolutely gobsmacked that I'd managed to stumble onto that by myself.
I often brought my multiple DS' at school, we would play SM64 DS very often at some point. From "Capture THAT cap" to "1v3 beat-up" and "Race to that specific location", we had so much fun.

I just realized on the GBC they remade Super Mario Bros for the platform (which also included lost levels as a unlockable), then on the GBA they did Super Mario Bros 2, 3, World, and the first Yoshi's Island, and on the DS they did 64. wouldn't be suprised if people were expecting a Super Mario Sunshine remake for the 3DS when it was new
All of the 3DS forum discussions I was in back in the day speculated Super Mario Sunshine 3D for this reason lol. It was a fun time imagining all of the games that were going to be ported over.
The DS (at least the original model) explicitly had a sort of “thumb stylus” on the end of the hand strap. You could tighten the end of the strap onto your thumb, which positioned a hard nubbin of plastic onto your thumb tip. It worked quite well on the left thumb for the touch-screen analog control scheme, and also allowed easy access to the camera controls.
I highly recommend the 3DS port of the PC port for anyone who really wanted those analog controls. It's a surprisingly amazing version and it fills that 64 DS d-pad shaped hole in my heart. One day it would be great to see the DS version get some upgrades too, good thing we can always count on mods!
I can still remember when I had my Ds… It’s impressive how good this was back in the day. Fantastic video as always man, gave me a good laugh here and there.
About the touch controls, when discussing them people always seem to forget about the lace that came bundled with the first Nintendo DS. That thing had a small disk of plastic and the idea was that you'd tie it to your thumb so that you could use it to guide the characters without using a stylus. That control scheme was not intended to be used with the stylus, they knew that it would not work. That lace was probably included specifically for this one game. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't great, but I remember it being better than the dpad. It was basically like having a free form analog stick. The problem mainly being that it was centered, instead of being on the side. Which is appropriate for a remake of a N64 game, I guess.
Fun fact from the emulation front, if you inject a patch into the rom and enable an analogue stick expansion pak (I think melonDS does it, it's not a real cartridge unfortunately :c), you get full stick support just like it always should have had
The inflation power up is originally from SMW where it was in the form of P-balloon. And yeah, that thing.. did inspire some art. A _LOT_ of it.. I've seen entire doujinshi dedicated to it, so even Japan is in on the fun too.
Super Mario 64 DS was my childhood, my sister would always play it in her pink DS and I’ve always wanted to play it, she’s still addicted to it whenever we see it somewhere around the house
that bomberman video was amazing and cozy, probably my favorite video of yours. That's really sad it didn't do well. I had no idea the game existed before and the video convinced me to add it to my backlog. I feel like there's gotta be a way you could market it, but it's probably too late to change the title and thumbnail to re-roll the algorithm now
10:05 64DS has a flying glitch in this room that lets you do the final mission with any character, and it works until about halfway through the credits when the game freaks out and spits you back outside the csdtle
12:16 Fun fact! The camera move options allow you to change the direction the 8dpad options move, giving you a full 24 directions again. Also touch mode
Hey Silokhawk! I just wanna say that everytime I see an upload from you, I get very excited because you have some of the best content this platform has to offer. I love hearing your thoughts and critiques on games that I grew up with because it shows me that it is okay to be critical over the games you love. Anyways, I’ll always be supporting you and keep up the hard work!!
I’m right handed, and when this game launched, I 100% it using the wriststrap thumbpad w/ the touchscreen to control movement. It was awkward at first, but much better than the stylus and provided more control than the d-pad.
Yeah, but it's not REAL analog controls. You don't actually get full 360° degree movement from using the Wii U's analog stick because it just emulates the D-Pad.
That’s so weird. When I was like 4-5, me and my family went on a camping trip, and some kid that I met on the camping grounds had a DS, and it was the first time I had ever seen one. According to my mom, I never did anything related to camping after meeting this kid, I was just watching him play his game the whole time.
Something a lot of people seem to not know. The DS originally came with a thumb stylus, and that is what you were supposed to use for the touch screen analog movement. It wasn't perfect, but it actually felt pretty alright. They never expected anyone to use the pen stylus for movement.
It was intended for you to use the lanyard for the DS and its tiny thumbpad as a "virtual analog stick" and...once you get used to it, it actually worked alright, but yea, i found myself consistently switching between that and the d-pad to get through this game. Also, i've gotta say that shell sliding mini game was like actual crack.
When I was a kid I had a Japanese neighbor and he had a ds a whole year or so before it came out in the US. It was like a magical device and I couldn't fathom how he had something so advanced.
18:05 I'd actually disagree and would say the wireless local multiplayer isn't outdated at all. It's a really good idea for handheld multiplayer and for being able to play with your friends easily. I wish the Switch had this feature
I mean it technically does, they just dont use it for some reason. Same goes for download play, that would be possible but no games do it nowadays. Though I also understand that because file sizes keep getting bigger for games.
Goomboss isn't "new" to SM64DS. He debuted in Paper Mario 64, although he was simply called "the Goomba King" there. In fact, Goomboss bears the distinction of being one of the only Mario characters to ever be introduced in the RPG series and then cross over to the mainline platform series. King Boo also appeared in Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine before his fight here, although his design was drastically different in both games.
Can I just say that I really prefer this version? I get the criticism about the controls, but I don't hate them. No, they aren't perfect. But they work. The incremental turning does really well in masking the limiting d-pad. I will agree, it's pretty bad for narrow levels, but as someone who mainly plays Mario 64 for the sandbox levels, I didn't find myself facing that issue often. Playing on the 3DS doesn't fix the issue, but it does make it more comfortable for my hands. Being able to just pull my 3DS out of my pocket and knock out a Star on Cool Cool Mountain is main selling point for me. Overall this was a great review and I really appreciate SilokHawk taking into account it's time of release and being as objective as possible.
Yes and no, the game will still make you move in 8 directions and hold a run button to run, but a circle pad does feel much better for 3D games than a D-pad.
I would recommend buying an original ds wriststrap because that makes the touch controls more stick like, but those are pretty niche to come by to be honest. Though maybe something similar to that exists somewhere
I remember i never staying up one night trying to get my last star which was 100 coin star in rainbow ride I believe, I was having so much trouble with it, but man the moment i did it, it felt so accomplishing, this game will always have a special place in my heart
Addendum: There *is* another camera button: X. It swaps between the standard view, the zoomed-out view, and the FP-like rear view. I adore 64 DS for what it aspired to do, honestly. I think that, relearning the controls and getting used to that curve aside, it’s a fantastic remake of the original.
one thing you can do if d-pad controls get you down is to try playing this game on a 3ds. The fact that they added that d-pad smoothing to the game for a d-pad, actually makes the 3ds circle pad feel more natural than you would expect. that's how I managed to complete the game and I must say, while it doesn't fix EVERY problem with control in this version, it makes it SIGNIFICANTLY better, just due to the fact that the circle pad will alternate d-pad imputes frequently enough to feel natural. if you haven't tried this game due to the ds, give it a try on the 3ds. its a much better experience.
One thing to note about the controls is that the touch controls were not meant to be used with the stylus, but rather a weird little rubber... Thing attached to the original ds' wriststrap. I played it that way back then and playing this way feels wayyyy more organic than using a stylus or the dpad. The only issue is that ONLY the original ds had this wriststrap thing with the rubber part on it, which honestly imo is part of the reason nobody knows about it. It sucks because I genuinely think this is the best way to play the ds version [besides mods] and everyone online either doesnt know about it existing OR mentions it and then shits on it because they havent tried it or gotten used to it and then say "but its not a stick"
Tl;dr: There's a really good option to play the ds version that feels great but its not well known and people make fun of it if they do know it. Idk just curious what others think about it since I rarely hear it mentioned
16:14 Honestly 3D All-Stars would have been a great opportunity for that. Not a brand new remake, but rather a mix between the 64 and DS versions that incorporate all the pros from both versions.
first off great video about mario 64 ds BUT i will not let you think that the bomberman video was bad. i loved that video. it was very very very well put together and i didnt even know there was a fire emblem bomberman and now im playing it. MAKE MORE BOMBERMAN VIDS!
I remember having a lot of fond memories with this game despite not actually owning it. Would constantly rent it out from video stores, and it was a blast to play.
This was the second video game I ever played and I never remember any problems with the controls, but that was probably because I didn't know any better. Now that I have actually played 3D games, going back to 64 DS always feels weird even when I'm playing on a 3DS.
I loved this game so much. I remember I always wanted to be able to play as Luigi in SM64 and when I heard about SM64DS it was quite literally a dream-come-true, plus being able to play as Yoshi & Wario was an added bonus. I also scanned and printed off the character stat's pages from the instruction booklet so I could bring them to school and share them with my friends. Simpler times.
people always used analog sticks with the left hand before, and there was a thumb sleeve accessory you could get to use your thumb on the touch screen for control instead of a stylus. Of course, this was early on and way before they released XL models of DS systems.
This game is SO important to me. Like, I did play other 3d games before it on the ps2, but on my DS I only had NSMB. and MKDS, and my dad had already showed me the classics like Super Mario World. When a friend started playing a 3d Mario game I instantly went nuts, LIKE OMG IT'S MARIO BUT IT's LIKE BIGGER AND BETTER?? I annoyed my dad so much until he downloaded it into my R4 card. Little did I know, SM64 was quite harder in structure, I spent a lot of time trying to understand how to get the more diffcult stars, and only learned how to unlock Luigi and Wario through a boy I befriended because of the game lmao. Damn... I miss those days
I have so many fond memories of this game. I remember so many nights spent trying to finish it (even though kid me was _trash_ at it lol). The minigames were easily my favorite part. I miss those days so much…
1:43 this is soooo true! I remember the reverse of this when everywhere phased the GameCube out super early and as a 10 year old kid I had no idea this was going to happen so I was rushing around all the stores looking for games and there was NOTHING. It was all just suddenly gone 😭
The intended way to play using the touch-screen was to use a special wrist-wrap that came with the original DS. The wrist-wrap had a smooth chunk of plastic on it that's used to play DS games using your thumb on the touch-screen. I remember 100%ing this game in touch-screen mode for the hell of it. The touch screen controls are better than the D-pad, but they're still bad. Though, not in the ways you'd might think. In general the touch-screen controls are not completely analog. for some reason they're still digital in some very weird way. The game uses a target when you use the touch-screen with 3 colours on it: red, yellow, and blue. If you hover over the red area you either point or start sneaking, on the yellow area you fast walk, and on the blue area you run, but there's no smooth transition between any of these, so it gets irritating needing to pick between fast walking or slowly sneaking. Jumping and punching is also weird because the button mapping is different, and not as comfortable as the N64 version. However, one advantage that I found using the touch-screen is that characters seem to run faster than the D-pad controls for some reason.
I was wondering if silok was going to mention this or not in the video, if only for the sake of acknowledging it. After all that plastic nub for the thumb was the intended use for the touch controls, not the stilus.
That Luigi backflip was so clutch! I actually got all 150 stars before I ever got 120 in the original because I had no idea how to get to big Boo's balcony. But you could just flip up there. So eventually when I got the Wii virtual console I was able to do it on the original
As someone who is old enough to remember how big a deal the original Mario 64 was when it originally launched, and how it more or less changed the face of video games forever, the fact that a handheld that could run a (on the surface) better version of it less than ten years later was mind-blowing, and still kind of is. And I feel like the reason the DS, and to a degree the PSP, saw so many 2D games in spite of their capabilities is that in the early 00s, we were still in era where 2D games were considered dated, and full retail priced 2D titles on console just wasn't even considered a viable thing until New Super Mario Bros Wii in 09, so for most of the DS' life, if a dev wanted to make a 2D game, that was the only place they'd probably be allowed to put it
If you eat an enemy that gives 3 coins, egg it, and then fire it at other enemies, every enemy will give 3 coins. Same thing with blue coins. Eat a Koopa, egg it, Shoot at a bunch of enemies, each one gives a blue coin. Yoshi is way more broken than anybody thought, and nobody ever seems to know about this trick for easy 100 coins stars.
actually chife chilly is the only boss that's new to Mario 64 DS, unless if you mean as in wasn't in Mario 64, as big boo, or king boo, was in Luigi's Manson, and gomboss was in paper mario
Bro what you said about stumbling into a store and finding something you never knew about was so damn true, miss those days man, walking into GameStop back in the day was so exciting
This totally released around the time where people were getting game news online. I know I did. I was a kid and followed coverage for the GBASP, DS, GameCube, Wii, Xbox, PS2, and PC daily. g4 tv every day after school, websites, forums, and magazines were lurked. I'd even buy the Mexican Club Nintendo a few times a year. It improved my Spanish quite a bit. I kinda preferred it to Nintendo Power lol
Couldn't agree more with your conclusions, Super Mario 64 DS was such a great launch title for the DS and despite everything was and still is such a fun game! 0:04 I don't know how I missed it, but when I'll have some more time I'll definitely watch that video because I'm quite interested in learning more about Bomberman games since I really liked the few ones I've played! 2:11 I would've absolutely hated him because no matter what I love Mario Party Advance!
There's something really interesting about this game if you somehow enter a boss level where taht character can't go in normal ways (like the wario painting with yoshi) the bosses have dialog programed and even is translated to another lenguages

A couple nuggets about SM64DS:
Wario's boss fight actually has special dialog if fought with Yoshi, which is possible by using a glitched spot on the mirror that seems like it was intentionally left broken even though they fixed other issues like JRB's Boat being a slope when it swayed
The dialog is as follows:
(Intro/before the fight starts)
"Hmm? I see you have no mustache. Poor, bald, little creature.
It's not a fair fight for you, but luckily, I'm not a fair fighter. Let's go!"
(After the fight/Defeated)
"I simply cannot believe that I lost to a hairless pip-squeak like you!
My mustache was my only joy. Now what am I going to do?"
This is possible on launch copies (The copies that start with "©2004 Nintendo")
I'm not sure about later copies that start with "©2004-2005 Nintendo"
You can duplicate caps on Snowman's Land by letting the Snowman blow you away then recovering them over and over again. it'll eventually duplicate too many for the engine to handle and it'll crash, showing a crash error screen.
We didn't knew what the hole in the wall on the castle exterior was for (on the file select screen). I don't know if we ever got an answer for that.
Super Mario Slot is just an easier version of Mario Slot.
It's random whether you can see through the card on Psyche Out!
You can complete the game with only one key very easily due to a bug that lets you walk underwater on the moat
Unlike it's Original Counterpart, there's a lot of places where you can upwarp very easily, one of them is on the TTC/RR room.
There's leftover stuff from the multiplayer for story mode.
I highly recommend the 3DS port of the PC port for anyone who really wanted those analog controls. It's a surprisingly amazing version and it fills that 64 DS d-pad shaped hole in my heart. One day it would be great to see the DS version get some upgrades too, good thing we can always count on mods!

I can still remember when I had my Ds…
It’s impressive how good this was back in the day.
Fantastic video as always man, gave me a good laugh here and there.
I bet you had some fat and juicy Ds
The intro alone was enough for me to subscribe, great content. Looking forward to seeing more!
People forget about the nubbin.
I totally forgot about that thing but I vaguely remember now
i have some of these! they're pretty cool
The Bomberman Wars review was actually really good. It was so good I watched it like 4 times.
Good job you drop this👑
Nice! That means you're a virgin
I'm so glad you're making this video I hope it gets the views that you deserve and I love your videos
13:20 When the game first came out, there was a thumb-stylus. You'd hold your DS like a 64 controller while playing 😂
This was my first Mario game ever. I couldn’t have started with a better game imo
12:16
Fun fact!
The camera move options allow you to change the direction the 8dpad options move, giving you a full 24 directions again.
Also touch mode
I LOVE this game, everyone likes to GUSH about and mod the original, and I really wish that more people talked about it! Thanks for doing that!
…Well, that intro sure was something. I didn’t even know about your Bomberman vid: I just saw this in my feed on a whim.
1:35 That’s how I found out about stuff like Action Replay and the R4 flash cart stuff. That blew my mind.
at least he's being honest!
I’m right handed, and when this game launched, I 100% it using the wriststrap thumbpad w/ the touchscreen to control movement. It was awkward at first, but much better than the stylus and provided more control than the d-pad.
If I remember correctly. The game was ported to the Wii u and they let you use full joystick directional use for that version.
From what i remember they just mapped the dpad to the stick. So you still only have 8 directions and no analog control sadly
Yeah, but it's not REAL analog controls. You don't actually get full 360° degree movement from using the Wii U's analog stick because it just emulates the D-Pad.
Mario could still only move 8 directions
So my memory did fail me
That’s so weird. When I was like 4-5, me and my family went on a camping trip, and some kid that I met on the camping grounds had a DS, and it was the first time I had ever seen one. According to my mom, I never did anything related to camping after meeting this kid, I was just watching him play his game the whole time.
Luckily, I got to play this on a 3DS so I never hard the d pad problem. I really recommend doing that
Was just thinking about this game. Thanks for letting me relive my childhood for 20 minutes.
Something a lot of people seem to not know. The DS originally came with a thumb stylus, and that is what you were supposed to use for the touch screen analog movement. It wasn't perfect, but it actually felt pretty alright.
They never expected anyone to use the pen stylus for movement.
But do they about Yoshi's coin duplication?
It was intended for you to use the lanyard for the DS and its tiny thumbpad as a "virtual analog stick" and...once you get used to it, it actually worked alright, but yea, i found myself consistently switching between that and the d-pad to get through this game.
Also, i've gotta say that shell sliding mini game was like actual crack.
THIS IS THE SUPER MARIO 64 I GREW UP WITH! 🥰
Sorry.
Alright but I'm barely a few minutes in and know this is gonna be a game documentary channel I listen to at night! Keep it up! Major props.
I’m still hurt by Wario having been done so dirty… my boi never deserved that dammit
My feed didn’t tell me your bomberman video came out like this one appeared on it. so I’m glad this video told me about it to watch afterwords!
The reason I didn't watch the bomber man video is because of my passionate avoidance for anything fire emblem.
Subscribed immediately with that entire intro commentary, well done
Hey man, great video!
One question: are the controls fixed when playing on the 3ds? Been thinking about buying one lately, would be great.
Yes and no, the game will still make you move in 8 directions and hold a run button to run, but a circle pad does feel much better for 3D games than a D-pad.
I would recommend buying an original ds wriststrap because that makes the touch controls more stick like, but those are pretty niche to come by to be honest.
Though maybe something similar to that exists somewhere
just use the d pad. It plays great, ppl are just accostumed more to the N64 version.
13:31 As a left handed person, I see this as a win
The intro skit hit too hard homie😭
I remember i never staying up one night trying to get my last star which was 100 coin star in rainbow ride I believe, I was having so much trouble with it, but man the moment i did it, it felt so accomplishing, this game will always have a special place in my heart
Enabled notifications and rewatching your previous videos during work :) Great content and you deserve the views!
Thank God you mentionned that 🙏
one thing you can do if d-pad controls get you down is to try playing this game on a 3ds.
Honestly, that intro bit on this video made me watch the Bomberman Wars video, and I don't regret it lol
A second Mario 64 remake of DS would probably be called Mario 64 DS Switch.
This, New Super Mario Bros DS, and Mario Kart DS were some of the biggest games of my childhood.
Bomberman fucking rules, even just as a character. I fucking love it. Never got the notification that you posted a Bomberman video sadly
Just two days ago I got a random urge to watch videos about this game, perfect timing :D
depending on the DS you use the analog stick is back making this game way easier, recommend this on a 3DS
I loved the Bomberman video Hawk :>
I'm glad you made, that game deserves more love!
The algorithm brought me here. I really enjoy your style, and I think I'll go watch that Bomberman video now. :)
This was very cozy watching, I needed this today. Thank you :)
Dang, I didn't know you made a bomberman vid, didn't show up in my sub box thingy. Thanks for showing me, gonna watch it
That Luigi backflip was so clutch! I actually got all 150 stars before I ever got 120 in the original because I had no idea how to get to big Boo's balcony. But you could just flip up there. So eventually when I got the Wii virtual console I was able to do it on the original
I remember playing this game so much as a little kid on the bus to summer school every morning. It was so dope as a kid
I love how bro was completely honest when making the title
Okay but the opening Bomberman hero music…I’m a musician and it’s easily my favorite game soundtrack.
Got there a week ago and watched a lot of your videos. This is a really good channel, videos are ineresting and well paced, keep it up :)
Bro what you said about stumbling into a store and finding something you never knew about was so damn true, miss those days man, walking into GameStop back in the day was so exciting
Dude as a kid I was so confident that you could unlock Waluigi from the white Boo door in the castle!
I love how the manual straight-up tells you not to get too attached to your title screen drawings bc you can't save them.
7:41 Wario may move slow and can’t jump high, but he’s one *hell* of a guy
Especially in multiplayer
I love the game freak drawings through diamond/ pearl to black /white! When x and Y came out, I hated the 3d models so much.
dude that lakitu voice is exactly how I've always imagined him sounding. now i wanna hear a full dub of lakitus lines.
There's something really interesting about this game if you somehow enter a boss level where taht character can't go in normal ways (like the wario painting with yoshi) the bosses have dialog programed and even is translated to another lenguages
It’s true. When I was a kid I didn’t even realized the controls were better or worse I can’t remember having an issue with that.
