I have a feeling the reason why Luigi’s Mansion is such a basic game is that it was meant to be more of a tech demo, kind of like how Wii Sports was executed. That being said, if Luigi’s Mansion is an overglorified tech demo, then it is the best tech demo I’ve ever played.
The best tech demo I played was Nintendoland on the Wii U, and its Luigi's Mansion attraction was the most fun. It's a shame that the whole asymmetrical multiplayer theme didn't stick.
If it is indeed a glorified tech demo, then the fact that they made a sequel showed that there is a market for games like this. Super Smash Bros. was originally a tech demo, I'm sure it would have been a one-&-done deal. But the very idea of Nintendo mascots duking it out with each other clicked with people and (as Brawl proved) it didn't need to be JUST Nintendo mascots. Point being: Luigi's Mansion is one of my favorite Mario games out there and a Survival Horror game to boot. (Well, as close to a Survival Horror game the Super Mario Bros. can get.)
cause the Fools not using a New Nintendo 3DS/2DS which would fix the download times and frame rate immensely or at the least stabilize it to a more decent one.
@@videogamerNattie98 You say that like everyone can fork out the money for it. Besides, people shouldn't even need to buy it to play a game which isn't exclusive to the N3DS.
@@smbx-jx2zd Then he needs to factor that into the review. and the N3DS is a special case where whilst not required it is recommended for these later titles.
“Luigi never has anything interesting to say” Literally every Luigi’s Mansion review i’ve ever seen disagrees with you. In fact I often see Luigi’s commentary as a feature that people specifically love about the game.
...and your point is? Reviews aren't meant to tell you what other people think, or even what's objectively good or bad. They're meant to tell you what one person thought of a game and nothing else.
@@edwheezer6231 My point is that I was simply stating an opinion I found fairly commonly. I wasn't making a particular statement, merely pointing out that what was stated in the video is not objective.
Perhaps he meant from a gameplay perspective? I’ve played the original multiple times and I never found it tying into the game itself. Oh, the scan feature is absolutely useful, but Luigi’s comments don’t seem to affect the game. I believe it was more to complete the atmosphere of the game and make it more interesting of a locale to explore. That’s just me though.
well I mean I think everyone already knows about the 3d and mentioning the main selling point at the beginning at basically the end would be pretty weird
2 year late correction: Luigi's Mansion was developed with Stereoscopic 3D. So, it's technically already capable of it (and it's the only GameCube Game that is capable of it). HOWEVER, at the time, the special add-on that implemented 3D cost more than a GameCube, so it was never used. So, it is capable of 3D already, but cannot ever be used because the add-on was never released and couldn't be released at the time.
Luigi is just scared stiff. Thats why he walks around like that. It makes me think of an image of a kid frozen standing in place. Looking terrified with a flashlight in his hand. Then imagine that frozen look as the kid also walks stiffly. I belive this is how they decided Luigi walking animation would look like.
Makes sense, but I always thought that his running animation was taken from his Mario party appearances. I’ve no way to prove that’s where it comes from, but that running or jogging style is almost identical to the Mario party running animations, he also runs like that in the Mario and Luigi games if I recall
@@Possum880I mean, both came out in 2001, but I'm not sure if the animations in Luigi's Mansion were somehow created *for* Mario Party 4 but paradoxically debuted in Luigi's Mansion first. *Editor's Note: Mario Party 4 came out in 2002, 13 months after Luigi's Mansion, meaning that said animations would've been created for Luigi's Mansion and reused in Mario Party 4, so I'm just talking out of my ass.*
Oh my word its tearing me up that so many people who line this game dont know that the closer you are, the longer the ghosts are stunned for. EGAD SAYS IT IN THE TUTORIAL i shouldn't be this mad but I am
My only gripe with this review is a lot of these problems in frame drops can be mostly avoided or mitigated with the newer model, to put it in comparison the New 3DS fixes a lot of the problems the original had that being it practically doesn't chug in frames and when it did, it did so not nearly as hard. This made games for me like MGS3D MUCH more playable the frame rate in MGS3D Chugged practically all the time...this made it so now the game at least usually always runs at the solid 20fps the games set at. (And that may seem low but I never was the kinda guy to whine about frame rate, and the fact I got MGS3 on a portable device that is actually serviceable is a kojima magic trick in it of itself.) The point was whilst the games frame rate was low the newer model made sure it at least didn't dip below that. And this was true with other games I played. The frame rate was more stable and chugged considerably less and the only time it would, would be minor hiccups from when there was ALOT on screen. Another thing it fixed is games load times and download times. Smash Bros on 3DS practically shows this off the game requires literally like 25 seconds just to boot the game that drops down to a mere 5 seconds on the newer model. and download times for both Eshop and download play are considerably faster to on the newer model. And that small nub and zl and zr buttons on the New 3DS actually can act as a control pad pro accessory ill be it to me its not as great as the control pad pro accessory but its there. This point is a bit polarizing depending on how you look at it but the new 3DS offered super stable 3D this made 3D feel less stiff when using it as you didn't have to look at a specific angle to use it. This made the 3D feature to those that want to use it at least more comfortable. So overall if your complaining about the frame rate chugging I really suggest the New Nintendo 3DS its a bit on the pricey side but for what it improves over the original it more then makes up for its steep asking price. That being said the original is quite serviceable in most situations and is often a cheeper option for those gaming portably on a dime. Just be forewarned that this is the kind of chugging you can sometimes get as shown in the video from some newer system titles.
I have a hard time understanding the parallels being drawn between Luigi's Mansion and Super Metroid. The two games share almost nothing in common. I don't mind that you're expressing a preference in design, however it just seems to me that you're perturbed at an apple for not being an orange.
@That Hippie Gamer wario land 3 is more of a collectathon. imo a metroidvania should use one large map or at least a central hub area - stage-based design with multiple exits and a world map reminds me more of super mario world than super metroid
Idk if I can personally agree entirely about the whole “Plenty of ideas but master of none” ideology here. I have a feeling that Luigi’s Mansion wasn’t made to be a like a Metroid game... Like at all. Sure, the idea you proposed would maybe make a fun fan hack, (Luigi’s Mansion Randomizer, maybe?) but I believe what they were going for was the right idea. Guide the player through the Mansion with cookie crumbs and reward the player with little bonuses if the player chooses to explore a bit further off the path. You also brought up the Rank System, and bragged about how you scored an A Rank. That’s nice, but it’s not just a Ranking System. It’s also a High Score System, and definitely encourages to always go for the high score for those sweet bragging rights. Sure, anyone can get an A Rank, but what about prioritizing tactics to beat your own high score? Yes, the game gives you a Lot of Health, but if you try to get the high score, any hit will make you loose coins, and the consequence for failure is raised, and gives you the option to save your dropped cash at the risk of being hit and losing more. You also mentioned that the game becomes more and more tedious the more you play, giving fighting the boos as an example, and that’s when I kind of rolled my eyes. Luigi’s Mansion’s combat is very simple, but has a lot of hidden tech. Over subsequent playthroughs, players might discover that mashing the control stick in the opposite direction can actually be utilized with the regular tug mechanics to completely obliterate the ghost’s hp, and might even fully knock out the toughest portrait ghosts, even on the normal Mansion. Players might also pick up on Boo Pumping, and Boo Blocking, Which are incredibly useful tech to master as they pretty much solve the Boo chasing problem. This tech basically freezes the Boo in place for you to do major damage, and, though Boos with 300 hp will probably break free from the exploit, the Boo Room Blocking tech can be used to make it stay in the same room. It makes the tedious act of normally catching boos make you feel awesome when you manage to catch a 300hp Boo without ever having it flee the room. There’s more techniques too, but I’m already off topic. I also disagree with the complaint of the 3DS hidden Mansion being too hard on health. I actually love how grueling hard it is, and I believe the lack of Hearts really makes it stand out. In fact, I would have probably liked it a lot less if there were just Hearts I could go back and rely on. It makes every instinctive decision seem a lot more impactful knowing I’ll only be able to heal every few rooms by using skill to take out many ghosts at once. I like to think of the 3DS Hidden Mansion as an exclusive Club, for those who have the game on a complete lockdown, for the masters. This isn’t a mode that scrubs can just walk into. This is where you go for the Ultimate Luigi’s Mansion Challenge. That being said, uh, no offense, but you didn’t look quite ready for that quite yet. Again, There’s a lot of enemy manipulation and planning that goes into the matchups in the hidden Mansion, and, well, if you just had problems catching more than one ghost at once, then maybe that’s the problem. I have no problem with the controls on the GC version, and kind of face palmed when you said that the best strategy is to turn off the flashlight and flash em quick... YES. That IS how you are supposed to do it. If you shine the ghosts too far away, they won’t be stunned as long, and is how multiple can get away even before you tried to suck them. It’s a mechanic of the game that adds risk versus reward, and makes goons like Gold Ghosts and Purple Punchers require very different strategies to get the hearts. It requires baiting them and taking full advantage of being as close to them as possible to get the multi Suck that basically is the only thing that heals you in the 3DS hidden Mansion. It’s a very important mechanic. ... Oh man, I’ve been writing a while... I’m so sorry I’m so off topic. I guess what I was going to say is that sometimes, you don’t need to be the master of a trait to be a good game. Luigi’s Mansion is about the Breadcrumb experience that lets players poke around the bushes for some extra rewards. It’s not supposed to be a revolutionary game. It’s just fun to be roaming around in this giant house, fighting some goonies, getting showered with money, beating the game in a night trying to beat your high score every year around halloween. Yeah, some parts of the game is simple, and I think that’s exactly what they were going for. Sure, it CAN be expanded upon, but what’s here is what I think that all the game needs to just be a fun time.
SNAPLocket I agree. Personally I wouldn’t mind if they made hearts appear less often than in the Normal mansion, but they didn’t need to take them out completely.
I guess we are split here. I would not agree that removing health is presents a fake challenge. Hearts are still rewarded with skill of sucking up multiple ghosts at once, and with the abundance of ghost swarms in the hidden Mansion, for me at least, still made hearts quite common in my playthrough. I personally think that going back to specific rooms to get big hearts was super cheap. It made it seem that you could baby waddle your way through the Mansion farming for health. I don’t think the New Hidden Mansion is about that. I guess it all goes back to the thing I said about the Hidden Mansion being like an exclusive club. Yeah, there are no health pick ups, but to be in the club, you need to be a master who takes no damage anyways, since all the ghosts do double the damage. You’ve pretty much got to be flawless to be in this theoretically exclusive club. There are plenty of other great games that offer little to no healing item items, and some that are loaded with instant death traps. Luigi’s Mansion’s Hidden Mansion is Still generous enough to reward players who take risks to recover from huge mistakes. I don’t know about anyone else. I’m kind of the guy who says gimme the hardest test you’ve got, and I’ll study the situation to go for the gold. I’m into Uber-hard hardcore adventures that simple mistakes can spell doom when you least expect it. It’s kind of like life. The new Hidden Mansion does just that. I may be one in a crowd but I love how tough it is.
I actually agree with you, I think Exo nitpicked this game way too much to the point where I found myself irritated. I've played games far more unfair about health drops than this one and was able to beat them in the past too.
Fuck that! I'd like something more than a high score system (something that hasn't mattered for decades) and a bullshit harder mansion (really, they couldn't lower the Boo's health?!)
I liked this comment more than the actual video😂...no offense to him it was a great video i enjoyed it i just didnt like how he was comparing it to games that werent like it in any case at all to further his point
Why did he spend so much time to compare Luigi’s Mansion to a metroidvania when it is not a metroidvania? The game doesn’t need huge exploration or alternate routes to be replayable because it’s flat out fun, plus it has the ranks for collecting treasures. To get the best rank requires exploring the entire mansion to find speedy spirits, golden mice, and the 50 boos to get one of only two giant diamonds.
I don't think he was comparing it to metroid because its a metroidvania but because both games have a pretty short run time but one is infinitely more repayable than the other
Something about Dark Moon that allows me to come back to it is that it somehow manages to be the most expressive game, even more then 3, primarily with the ghosts.
Luigi's Mansion 2.5: The professor invents a time machine in order to play test Gooigi in preparation for Luigi's Mansion 3. The game ends when he gathers enough data to fix the frame rate issue.
“Luigi has nothing interesting to say” Compared to who? Mario? Aside from pasta, he rarely shows his thoughts on anything. I honestly find Luigi’s character more entertaining, and he actually HAS character! He has refined tastes (its a painting, but I wouldn’t call it art), he’s not a fan of the Nursery’s look(now that’s just not my style/this looks like it’d break if I sit on it), and he even calls out E. Gadd for his failures! (Way to go genius. Have you got a hold of that thing yet?) We can even learn that he had a rocking horse in his childhood by scanning one. In what other situation would we learn these facets of Luigi’s personality?
@@Raddish-IS-RaddI hate to say it, but Mario could really use a little more character development in a future game. I mean, really, what do we know about him? He's kind and heroic. He's a plumber. He loves Princess Peach. He loves mushrooms and pasta. He'll gladly drop everything he's doing to kick Bowser's tail at the drop of a dime. He cares for his brother. ...And that's about it. Him and Luigi have all but 1 of those those things in common ( I think he prefers Daisy over Peach, since like him, she's more athletic compared to her more popular counterpart ). And yes, even at his most cowardly, Luigi will charge into the fray if needed to help Mario out. See the final Bowser battle in the Super Mario Bros. movie for that one. Compared to Luigi, Mario's had barely ANY character development in the 30+ years we've known him. We don't know his opinions on fine art, music, decoration, toys and other playthings, fashion, etc., some of which you'd think we'd know by now given how often he hangs out with Peach, whose probably a huge fan of a lot of those things. He needs more moments like what Luigi gets in this game, moments that tell us more about who that man in the red cap is. Mario is as bland as a stale cracker compared to Luigi in that department, all because of this one game.
46:00 leaving through the front door and returning refills your health bar FYI also the hidden mansion in the 3DS version is just a copy of the hidden mansion of the PAL GCN version. Same ghosts, same spawn locations.
That is an considerable point but then you need to call the shot of is it worth back tracking to the entrance to restore your health over dieing to then restart where your at with full health. Also this isn't a suggestion more of a say, whats with Europe getting the "Harder" version of the highest difficulty setting in games?
REUPLOADED because UA-cam never enabled 4K on the original upload. I'll keep that in mind for future reviews so we don't have this problem again. Anyways, enjoy the Ultra HD! 2K (1440p) looks really good on most smartphones. If you're watching on PC, you can watch in 2K or 4K even if your monitor is only 1080p for higher quality than you'll get on the 1080p mode.
Actually, according to Digital Cinema Initiatives, native 2K is 2048X1080. Not 1440p which is just called Ultra HD. Even flat cropped and cinemascope 2K aren't 1440p. With that being said: I beat the smart kids! I beat the smart kids! XD
I would like to say thanks for producing these videos. They really help people researching game design, like myself, by providing a perfectly acceptable critical analysis of games and subsequent re-releases. Feedback is exactly what developers need to create excellent final products, and judging by Luigi's Mansion, it seems Nintendo had just yes-men in the EAD division that worked on the game.
lack of particle effects? imsorrywhatthefuck? the original had a LOT of particle effects that would severely slow down the 3ds (like the dust, little glitters the gold makes, and ghost particles.) I don't know that Grezzo entirely had a choice when it came to using the Dark Moon controls, but I can't confirm that, but assuming he didn't that's not a huge deal for me, I guess. I disagree that Luigi's thoughts are uninteresting. I feel his thoughts on specific items (unless it uses repeated text) is a very interesting study into his character. I think the game is SUPPOSED to be a calm atmospheric haunted mansion experience, and I love the atmosphere and how calming the mansion itself is so much that I play the game again every October when I'm not watching scary movies. Portrait ghosts each have unique personalities, which I feel adds to the atmosphere I feel is the main focus. They seem like stock characters, but if memory serves (and it might not, I tend to forget most things almost immediately) you can find diaries and uncover dialogue by scanning the heart of the bosses. The ones who lived together did live together wherever they come from, but were captured by E. Gadd, and placed in portraits. Creating this mansion and releasing the ghosts from the paintings, the ghosts now have a pretty nice place to live seeing as wherever they come from is likely either destroyed or far away. Totally agree on the Boos though, but I do like their silly names. I also agree on the spoilery thing at the end of the game. I knew about the bronze to gold portraits to begin with, discovering it slowly on my own when I noticed some of the images in the gallery weren't the same as when I played before. I feel like it SHOULD have been rereleased on Switch, and I would have gotten the remake in that case, but I'm going to pass on this one. Sorry about the paragraph, I love this game is all. Mostly for the mansion itself, I think.
Speaking of repeated text, text luigis mansion should have been made for switch btw did i meantion luigis mansion should have been made for switch? Jk i love the remake*commit edit*
Although I feel like the reason they didn't remake it on switch was because LM3 is coming out 2019 and if they came out around the same time then the general "consumer" would probobly be confused
In the original Luigi's Mansion (and presumably also the 3DS remake), ghosts had more flashlight stun the closer you were to them when the beam hit them. If you walked toward them with the light on, it would hit them at the farthest possible point from Luigi and they'd escape instantly. Holding it off and getting close and then turning it on guaranteed a catch. You could also point it away from them and let them approach you and then turn around and shine it on them when they were close.
Same, I could never beat it as a kid, and coming back to it as an adult I was shocked at how challenging it still was and when I beat it I felt like a champion
As for the finale, yeah with the lore behind boos in the series, it makes more sense for King Boo to do something cowardly and use Bowser’s body than to fight you head on like in later games. It’s a creative use of the Koopa king, foreshadowed in the story, one of the much better Bowser twists in the series.
It's also cool to see Luigi canonically beat Bowser at his biggest and baddest, even if it's just a costume for King Boo. Hell, he beat that Bowser costume that was MORE powerful than it's living counterpart, since it attacks you even after it's decapitated!
Hi, I know why the ghosts sometimes blip out of existance when you shine your light on them. The closer you are to them the longer theyre stunned. That being said if you hit them with the fat side of the cone they'll flee faster than with the tip of the cone from the base of the flashlight :) love your videos, keep up the good work
By now, you've more than likely heard it a few times, but just to make sure you know, in order to have better chances catching ghosts, you need to be close to the ghost. The further you are from the ghost, the shorter the stun lasts before the ghost disappears. I don't remember if it was E. Gadd who mentions it or if it's somewhere in the rule book, but I'm pretty sure that it is mentioned somewhere.
@@Tiggster-qr8mw dark moon isn't even a good Luigi's mansion game, much less the best game in the series. Plus this comment is lying, it's not random chance, Ghosts have a minimum time they can despawn, even if it does vary, it's not by much.
this is just a flat out lie. the ghost disappear based on the distanced they are from the light. i think, and I could be wrong, this is even covered i the training session
The fun aspect of replaying Luigi's Mansion is to get a better score by finding more treasure, to get all gold portraits and in the case of the 3DS version that is much better, get all achievements, get all tier houses, get the platinum portraits that are honestly super hard to get because the new hidden mansion is legit hard
The reason the ghosts disappear is because of when and where you shine the flashlight. If a ghost gets stunned by the widest part of the flashlight it will disappear, if a ghost gets stunned by the smallest part of the flashlight (the tip of the flashlight) then the ghost will be stunned for way longer. I would recommend holding B and go up to a ghost then shine it. Hope this helps
The flashlight thing is something I didn't know until this year. It has to do with spacing. The smaller the distance between the ghost and the flashlight, the longer they stay stunned and vacuumable before disappearing.
I'm assuming you meant Mario and Luigi BIS + Bowser Juniors Journey, since he already reviewed the Bowsers Minions mode in Superstar Saga DX, and the modes share pretty much everything, aside from the characters.
Man, I REALLY want a partners in time review. Hope you make it in the future. Also, what you were saying about the game around halfway through the video is why I love the PAL hidden mansion so much.
"They probably made the game for the aging 3DS market, to give them something to play." Also "They should only make 3DS games with the original 7 year old hardware in mind, and make nothing using the current newer, easier to obtain, hardware in mind."
As far as he was concerned, the _correct_ newer, easier to obtain hardware to make new games for was the Switch at that point due to the 3DS 2.0 not being a satisfactory upgrade in terms of capabilities or library to merit anyone purchasing it or porting GC games to it in his opinion.
@@autobotstarscream765 The 3DS in 2018 was still a viable market in Nintendo's eyes, had they abandoned it there and than, I think it would've done more harm than good. Hell, you could still buy new 3DS's in store up to late last year
None of my videos reach near any the quality of Exo's and some of them have taken 8 hours (not lying) My chest aches thinking about how long this man waited on this.
Honestly, I love this game. I'm fine with everything the gamecube has going but I agree with the 3DS remake having a framerate issue in co-op and the new hidden mansion buuuuut...I think It's fine with me honestly, the co-op framerate is bad, sure but I don't think It's that bothering when you both have to deal with it. The download speed is bad aswell I admit, the hidden mansion is way too difficult with the health replenishment I agree with that aswell but as far as I know Luigi's Mansion has only done me dirty 2 times and that's the things mentioned above
EXO, I just want you to know, I only within the past 2 years started really watching game reviews, but only of *current* games that are releasing and not older ones, because older games aren't being advertised to us the way new games are, so I have less incentive to watch them as a non-collector... BUT, your reviews or whatever you call them, be it one of these or an actual review of an older game, with the amount of quality you put in for only gaining 80k subs over these 5 years, I'm fucking astounded at your persistence! And I absolutely *love* every single video you put out. Each and every one.
Just played through Luigi mansion 3 and I have to say i am impressed how next level games fixed many issues stated in this video. Boo fights are now more engaging since boos don't run away anymore and is really satisfying to smack the shit out of em Portraits ghost are not back but their concept was enhaced with the hotel staff. Every boss has their own established personality and theme making the game much more correrent while still changing levels radically.
When playing the Luigi’s mansion remake on my Nintendo 3DS I found that cutscenes were going at like 10 FPS there were terrible drops, and when I purchased a New! Nintendo 3DS XL the cutscenes preformed better than the actual game... what?
That’s just arrogant, Nintendo. Even Sony and Microsoft’s best-reviewed, best-selling games would have gone down in price before the generation they came out was over.
Blandy8521 That’s not really an issue with Nintendo as they’re not the ones distributing the game. That’s a problem with the seller overpricing an older game. I can understand your point, but that example doesn’t necessarily work the best in this situation.
I unfortunately gotta disagree with some of the points you made in this video. First off, I actually found the controls in the 3DS version much easier to handle compared to the gamecube version, and sucking up the different ghosts wasn't nearly as tiresome either. The other one's about the Bowser boss fight in the end. On my second run (Last time I played was 7 years ago), I couldn't even touch Bowser, and it took about 6 tries to finally beat him with just a slither of health left, whereas I could defeat him pretty easily in the 3DS version. Idk, different experiences for different people I guess, but even if you have the Gamecube version of the game, the 3DS version's worth a shot. You're not missing out otherwise, but it's still a good experience to go through nonetheless. Regardless, I really loved the video Exo, can't wait for Partners in Time!
They arent doing the Luigi Mansion remake for Switch because they are making a new Luigi Mansion for the console (Luigi Mansion 3, of course). Why put out an appetizer when the main course is coming out soon enough?
@@kylecampbell565 No point to putting out 2 very similar titles (1 probably way cheaper than the other, since its an older game) and risk satisfying customers to the point that they may not even buy the new game! Why sabotage your own sales like that? - If you want to do that, you release the remake AFTER the new entry comes out.
Darius Batista there would be a year gap if not more. And it would be low risk if it was an eshop title. After all Nintendo plans to release Pokemon Gen 8 in 2019 despite the risks
@Kyle Campbell I'd rather just Nintendo try making new and refining the Luigi's Mansion formula than pandering to the hardcore Luigi's Mansion 1 fanboys
@@Dare1C It's kind of the same mistake with Zelda. They could of easily remade Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the Wii and Wii U (or both on Wii U) but instead waited on Skyward Sword and the two HD remakes of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. The sacrifice for the 3DS remakes was the lack of good lighting that ruined darker elements of both games. Yeah models looked sharp and more detailed, but everything else just felt meh and somewhat bland looking. But that's just me. Point is, it wouldn't hurt to at least try. Since Luigi's Mansion 3 (so far) is reusing Dark Moon's cartoony design, it suffers from the same problem Dark Moon did. It lacks the "horror" vibe and more of a joke and comical vibe. Would of been best to see just how a "proper" remake of Luigi's Mansion could of been with the full horror look to it. All the gritty and dark themes included.
I love the time and effort you put into these videos EXO but I gotta say I've noticed something in every review I've watched from you. It's that half of the time (not trying to offend you) I feel that you haven't practiced with the controls of a certain game enough. Like timing of some moves, or in this videos case, how to flash your flashlight the correct way for the most optimal ghost sucking. I'm not saying you're a bad gamer or anything, honestly I guarantee you that a majority of people that play games might have difficulty with some aspects as well, I just think you need to keep an open mind sometimes with the controls of some games.
(Happy Sigh) Exo's first 4K Review, I still remember the moment I saw this video pop up in my notifications back in late 2018 and I immediately clicked on it interested to hear his opinions on both versions of the first "Luigi's Mansion" and even though I'm not really a 4K guy myself, being able to watch a proper HD game review on UA-cam without the awful video compression UA-cam applies to most 1080p videos was really refreshing.
I remember when people thought Luigi's Mansion must've been hiding the 'true' Mario launch game somewhere within its walls; It was such a huge event for a new Nintendo console to launch without a real-deal Super Mario game that even people who had finished it couldn't believe that they'd actually finished it.
The game literally does tell you about pearls, by showing them, you get them for Neville and his wife, then none for Chauncey before seeing they have Monetary value, not just that, they’re tied to rankings so it’s meant for you to learn fully on your own
Honestly, this game was something that really expected you to play on a New 3Ds because I tested co-op and single player on the New one and the fps drops arent even bad. Plus co op actually doesnt lag that much on New 3Ds so this is pretty dumb.
Like he said, they should at least make the game WORK PROPERLY on the earlier model, the priority should be the original 3ds not the "new" one, it shouldn't just expect you to have the new model
This comment of mine is a year old but you guys are totally missing my point. I was saying that this game seemed to be made with the New 3DS in mind since most people seem to have it and not the earlier model which I agree is dumb.
I think this episode is a little unfair to how much you wanted the remake to be on the Switch. That argument alone can take away points from the 3DS version as well. The reason it was madr for 3DS was because the game was planned to be in Stereoscopic 3D, but was cut. Now that we have the 3D, along with the Dark Moon engine, that can happen.
except it's totally bombed in sales. It's so pathetically low for a supposed 75 million users that it's actually still negative in cost (it's a commercial failure).
Does the stereoscopic 3D really justify making it for the 3DS though? I mean, this came at the very end of the 3d's lifecycle, at a point where everyone has pretty much totally gotten their fill of the whole 3D gimmick. I don't think anyone was exactly begging for 3D luigi's mansion to be realized
I will say New 3DS probably does better than the old 3DS for FPS and performance, but even on the N3DS, I had severe frame drops in Pokemon Sun and Moon particularly in doubles or SOS battles. So much so that I had to turn off battle animations to keep consistent frames. Though I partially blame that on GF for their incompetent coding abilities to optimize their games.
I sincerely laughed my ass off for several minutes at how casually you brought up Mr. Luggs passing out due to "obesity and heart disease." Never change, my dude. 😂

Same. Though part of that was 1. I was 'scared' of video games easily when I was that young and 2. I had a bad habit of starting a game over if I put it down for more than a few days. It actually made me really sad many years ago to realise that you can beat Luigi's Mansion in a couple hours without even trying to speedrun it, if you knew what you were doing. However you can make the same case for classic Resident Evil games. They're short but sweet and extremely memorable for people who enjoyed them back in the day.
Something to notice on the 3DS version is that it features auto-aim... or rather an aim-assist. If you hold B and point at the general direction of a suckable object, Luigi will point at it. This solves the problem of not being able to point with X and B like Dark Moon... *B U T T H E G A M E N E V E R T E L L S Y O U T H I S* Granted, you can learn by playing, but that would've been REALLY good to know from the get-go!
Hey new sub here. From what I've watched of your videos you make excellent stuff, very thorough, very objective (and when it's not objective you are clear and honest about your bias which is something sadly too many reviewers seem to forget or deliberately not bother with) and very well made. Also I say keep the real life footage if you like doing it, If someone thinks it's cringey that's their problem. Keep up the good work man!
Honestly, the original Luigi's Mansion is small and short enough it could have been added as some unlockable/post game content in LM3 imo. Or at the very least, could have been released as dlc.
Imanged if Luigi Mansion was realised on the Wii ensted of GameCube like how super paper Mario was supposed to be for the GameCube ensted of the Wii. They probley would have use the nuchect and remote like galaxy. And they would maybe you would need to pull the remote back to suck them up.

Is it me or Exo is giving me some Remake or Rebreak Vibes For Our Worm Hero, or am I Flinging A Cow Too High Into The Air? | Also, In 57:25 are you saying that Luigi's Mansion suffers from Sonic CD syndrome where it's too linear to be explore-ative, and too expansive to be linear?
I really want an EWJ RoR, especially for the HD version. And yes, I think that’s what he’s saying. He feels the game would be better if it was either less linear or had deeper mechanics.
I beg to differ that Metroid is short. If you take your time to explore and read text along with any extra bits, it can be quite long. Metroid zero mission has taken me around 4 to 5 hours, and I’d play it again and again.
I Personally Like Luigi's Mansion due to it giving Luigi a chance in the 3D spotlight and the fact that it has the new game plus functionality that lets you play as many times you want until you get bored. but that's my opinion on the Gamecube original but i wouldn't mind taking a whack at the remake to see if the challenge is still there.
Not sure if someone has answered it already, but the duration of the flashlight stun in the original is dependent on the distance from the ghost when the flashlight shines on it, the closer it is, the longer the stun, and more time you have to start vacuuming, if it's further, it's the opposite.
As I said on your original upload, this gives me a lot to consider for the 3DS version. I own the original GC game but haven't yet played it. I'll try to at some point. Since you played this on the original 3DS and not a New 3DS, as I also only own a standard 3DS, I see no reason to get the remake at this moment. If I get a new 3DS model, I'll consider it then, but be cautious. Overall, fantastic review and I loved how as usual, you showed objectivity. That's the biggest reason I love your reviews. :)
@@haroldneto-akin5061 As I said, if I ever get a New 3DS, then I'll be more likely to consider the remake. But until then, I'm perfectly happy owning the GC version.
Replaced my 3ds with New 3ds XL. Definitely worth it for the larger screen. The processor is also twice the speed so can run smoother and load quicker.
I'm curious how much the game is better on a NEW 3DS XL actually. A lot of his complaints seem like they would have been solved greatly on the NEW branded systems. The long load times, the need for the Circle Pad Pro, the gyro controls, the FPS dips. The NEW models improve all of those aspects. Though I guess it's debatable if you prefer the Circle Pad Pro or The Nub. I've never had issues with The Nub and don't hear people complain about it who are used to using it. It's usually only people freshly switching from the old system who seem to have trouble.
40:28 - 41:11 That is the one thing that makes me think that King Boo was just a weak villain in the original Luigi's Mansion Game. In Dark Moon, however, he actually fights Luigi with his own powers himself, and doesn't use a costume of Bowser. Heck, the only characters in the game even remotely mentioned are Luigi, Professor Egad, Mario, Toad, and when King Boo Mentions all of Luigi's friends which we can assume be the Toads, Peach, Daisy, etc... Heck, I almost feel that this King Boo could actually have even taken over Bowser's own Kingdom just with the Power he had in that game. The original showed him creating a massive Illusion and then doing it again for his fight. In Dark Moon, he still has Illusion Powers, but he has mastered them. Maybe this could have been King Boo still not out of the shadows of being one of Bowser's high ranking Lackeys, alongside King Bob-omb, Petey Piranha, and Kamek respectively. He is only one of the two villains, with the other being Kamek, to be a major antagonist to a respective protagonist. Mario having Bowser, Luigi with King Boo, and then Yoshi has Kamek. I have't beaten Luigi's Mansion yet, but I so far just see myself saying that Dark Moon is just better.
Not the same developer. Grezzo worked on the 3D Remake of Luigi's Mansion, Next Level Games (who also developed Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon) developed Luigi's Mansion 3. I love this Remake but it should have been on the Switch, would have benefited much more.
@@TheAnonymousIndividualI may be very late but I want a remastered Luigi's Mansion 1 game on the Switch. They already did the remastered of the second game which is called Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.
41:00 Because this is Luigi's biggest fear, facing Bowser without hid big bro to help him, King Boo is tormenting Luigi with his personal fears, that's actually brilliant and show how evil King Boo can be
@@GoldConnor Ya, they did refine the ghost hunting gameplay for sure in the second game. I kinda like the more creepy atmosphere of the first one a bit more though. Both fantastic games nonetheless.
Since other people have covered my other desired comments way better than I'd be able to...I just feel like I should point out that the portraits are reliant on how well you do the boss fight. After you brought up the "Ranking" system, I was waiting for you to bring it up, and that was, um...yeah. More specifically, it's tied to the pearls you collect from them, which gives extra incentive to avoiding literally anything that can hit you, and, imo, also makes it an overall more replayable game, for me anyway. Not necessarily for the score, personally, as much as for the really good art, and also some of the bronze frames in the 3DS version would make me feel bad if I actually had the game. Also, you're clearly more of a gameplay over story/character sort of guy from the videos I've seen so far, but I absolutely love the quotes from the portrait ghosts and Luigi, and it's kinda irritating that you keep saying that none of it's interesting. Sure, it's not a cinematic masterpiece and all, but it does flesh out Luigi a little more, makes mention to Mario's personality (that between some other stuff allowed ZoomZike to make a solid video of what likely went down when Mario entered the mansion by himself), and does still give the ghosts character, even if it's not much. What's more haunting (pun not intended) for me is the origin story of some of the ghosts, and the light implications that there's still something more to the mansion than just pure illusions, depending on how you look at the facts you're given. Of course, I get that sort of thing doesn't appeal to many people. Just bugged me that all of it was brushed aside as nothing worth looking at when that is yet another thing down to personal preference, which you've been good at handling in other things...not sure what went wrong here.
My main problem was the Hidden Mansion, Soecially the fucking "Rec Room" i'm wondering why Grezzo spammed 10 fucking ghosts in that room, What were they thinking?
Originally Luigis' Mansion was a stereo 3D game, but due to expensive hardware in the early 2000s, it was never released that way. That's why they released the sequel and this game on 3DS.
Luigi's Mansion was all about solidifying Luigi as a character and not just tall green Mario. It's not that Luigi doesn't have anything interesting to say, he's trying to let us know his interests, which shines through in the "useless dialogue."
@Blank Blank It is a bit tedious but when you realise that you can travel most of the mansion through the hallways while easily avoiding getting hurt, you basically just make a pit stop to heal between each segement of rooms. It's not as bad as you'd think it is since the hallways are not the real concern and will take you around most of the mansion.
Back on the European GCN version saving and dying didn't restore health, so I remember exploring the mansion JUST to try to get more health for the power shut down section.
I know I'm here kind of late but if you want a challenge for luigi's mansion 1, I've heard getting the LOWEST possible rank is quite a challenge because you have to go out of your way to NOT get money.
I was around 10 to 11 and my sister 3 years younger when we first got Luigi’s Mansion. It was I believe our first Gamecube game. That game was one of the hardest games to date for us. We got lost and couldn't figure out what to do, got jumped scared and refused to play for a while and only got a D rank house the first time we beat it. It depends also when you played it. We also had school, chores, bedtimes and the fact that we couldn't play it every night. If I played it blind today? I probably could beat it in a few hours with no more than a small jump or two before I got used to it. I just had to get that out and loved your review. Not sure about all the technical mechanics you were talking about, but we never really had a problem aiming or sucking ghosts.
6:34 I think you're forgetting about Rogue Squadron II there. But yeah, I agree with your opinion on Luigi's Mansion, I never got what all the fuss was about.
10:15 WHAT? When I played I had almost zero FPS drops... But again, I played on the New 3DS, this game was made more for the New 3DS than for the old 3DS
Cool that you like it. You are absolutely entitled to your own opinion. However, if you don't want to hear other people's opinions about a game, don't watch reviews.
If I remember right there's something that's sort of mentioned in passing about how you are supposed to 'wait until the ghosts are as close as possible then hit them with the light'. Basically if you shine them too far away they'll instantly disappear so you can't suck them in, hence the ability to turn off the flashlight in the original. It's a poorly explained feature.
I hope they do bring this to Switch. I imagine 3DS was chosen to so that they could easily reuse the SD textures. But since LM3 is coming, maybe they can use some assets on bringing a "Luigi's Mansion remastered" on Switch or similar.
due to the nature of this being an hour long video there are so many points I want to comment on as luigi's mansion is one of my favorite games of all time and have replayed it countless times myself. But Instead of writing a huge multi-paragraph long post detailing each part of the video, I just want to express my appreciation to the fact this video exists and the amount of time and care put into it!
True I guess.
Yeah, I feel where EPG is coming from with his review but for what it is I enjoy the game a lot.
The best tech demo I played was Nintendoland on the Wii U, and its Luigi's Mansion attraction was the most fun. It's a shame that the whole asymmetrical multiplayer theme didn't stick.
I'll be frank, Luigi's Mansion fans overblow this tech demo
If it is indeed a glorified tech demo, then the fact that they made a sequel showed that there is a market for games like this. Super Smash Bros. was originally a tech demo, I'm sure it would have been a one-&-done deal. But the very idea of Nintendo mascots duking it out with each other clicked with people and (as Brawl proved) it didn't need to be JUST Nintendo mascots. Point being: Luigi's Mansion is one of my favorite Mario games out there and a Survival Horror game to boot. (Well, as close to a Survival Horror game the Super Mario Bros. can get.)

...and your point is? Reviews aren't meant to tell you what other people think, or even what's objectively good or bad. They're meant to tell you what one person thought of a game and nothing else.
@@edwheezer6231 My point is that I was simply stating an opinion I found fairly commonly. I wasn't making a particular statement, merely pointing out that what was stated in the video is not objective.
I'd say it's interesting in that it shows his personality and thoughts more than that he has anything actually interesting to say.
@@blankpage9277 That's exactly why.
Perhaps he meant from a gameplay perspective? I’ve played the original multiple times and I never found it tying into the game itself. I believe it was more to complete the atmosphere of the game and make it more interesting of a locale to explore.
That’s just me though.
I'm surprised that 3D wasn't listed as a potential reason why Luigi's Mansion was remade on 3DS. The original game had a planned 3D add-on.

Exactly and when the room is clear he moves normally
Makes sense, but I always thought that his running animation was taken from his Mario party appearances. That load time brought me back to original ds download play.
And that's Sonic 06 without the disc being preinstalled (only available on Xbox 360 tho), it actually loads a lot faster from the HDD.
@@videogamerNattie98 - I know this comment is 8 months old, but seriously, this is a *comment* section not a post forum, get to the point quick.
I have a hard time understanding the parallels being drawn between Luigi's Mansion and Super Metroid. The two games share almost nothing in common. I don't mind that you're expressing a preference in design, however it just seems to me that you're perturbed at an apple for not being an orange.
He was focusing on replay ability because it’s so short.
@That Hippie Gamer wario land 3 is more of a collectathon. imo a metroidvania should use one large map or at least a central hub area - stage-based design with multiple exits and a world map reminds me more of super mario world than super metroid
I've never felt metroidvania vibes from LM at all, just like... family friendly nintendo resident evil vibes
Seriously. Can’t believe he missed the obvious Resident Evil parallels.
Feels more like I’m playing the first Resident Evil than I’m playing Castlevania or Shovel Knight
Some of the resident evil games are metroidvanias tho
Likewise, though I've been thinking lately that Metroidvania elements could REALLY serve the series well.
Famwe fwendly ugh 🤢
How far were you into the video before typing this shlock?
I don't think he was comparing it to metroid because its a metroidvania but because both games have a pretty short run time but one is infinitely more repayable than the other

Actually, according to Digital Cinema Initiatives, native 2K is 2048X1080. Not 1440p which is just called Ultra HD. Even flat cropped and cinemascope 2K aren't 1440p.

Reason. Would you rather have luigi's mansion 3 on 3ds or on switch

*picks hair on screen for entire review* "oh that's just your background."
15:13 E. Gadd says in the tutorial that the further you are away from the ghosts when you stun them, they can disappear more easily.
15:20 The reason that sometimes ghosts disappear is because its actually random chance. To get higher luck, you have to shine it closer to the ghost
Aaaaaaaaand that’s all the more reason why Dark Moon is the best game
@@Tiggster-qr8mw dude....no.
@@reddrahvett623 no what?
It's sad that real time shadows are gone on this 3ds version. :(
@dontclick notgood Instead of having shadows that look like ones IRL, they instead have circles for shadows.
The flashlight thing is something I didn't know until this year. It has to do with spacing. The smaller the distance between the ghost and the flashlight, the longer they stay stunned and vacuumable before disappearing.
Can you make a ROR about Mario & Luigi Bowsers inside Story + Bowser jr’s journey since that just came out in America

Also
"They should only make 3DS games with the original 7 year old hardware in mind, and make nothing using the current newer, easier to obtain, hardware in mind."
As far as he was concerned, the _correct_ newer, easier to obtain hardware to make new games for was the Switch at that point due to the 3DS 2.0 not being a satisfactory upgrade in terms of capabilities or library to merit anyone purchasing it or porting GC games to it in his opinion.

Boo fights are now more engaging since boos don't run away anymore and is really satisfying to smack the shit out of em

Blandy8521 That’s not really an issue with Nintendo as they’re not the ones distributing the game. That’s a problem with the seller overpricing an older game. I can understand your point, but that example doesn’t necessarily work the best in this situation.
@@SendoDX I guess doesn't stop it being annoying though
@@PumpkinSwag Nintendo doesn't see the Gen 2 remakes anymore

Darius Batista there would be a year gap if not more. And it would be low risk if it was an eshop title. After all Nintendo plans to release Pokemon Gen 8 in 2019 despite the risks
@Kyle Campbell
I'd rather just Nintendo try making new and refining the Luigi's Mansion formula than pandering to the hardcore Luigi's Mansion 1 fanboys
The sacrifice for the
3DS remakes was the lack of good lighting that ruined darker elements of both games.

@@purs3it oh, I thought you were saying his point was dumb, my mistake
I think this episode is a little unfair to how much you wanted the remake to be on the Switch. That argument alone can take away points from the 3DS version as well.
The reason it was madr for 3DS was because the game was planned to be in Stereoscopic 3D, but was cut. Now that we have the 3D, along with the Dark Moon engine, that can happen.
except it's totally bombed in sales. It's so pathetically low for a supposed 75 million users that it's actually still negative in cost (it's a commercial failure).
It really should have been on the Switch. The issues with the controls and framrate wouldn't exist on Switch.
@@romeostruedude It should have been on Switch tho. The game would have been much bettee on it (and probably sold better too).
It still could've at least had the Dark Moon controls so nobody would have to get a Circle Pad Pro.
I will say New 3DS probably does better than the old 3DS for FPS and performance, but even on the N3DS, I had severe frame drops in Pokemon Sun and Moon particularly in doubles or SOS battles. So much so that I had to turn off battle animations to keep consistent frames.

The game is actually really good on new 3ds

@@GoldConnor Ya, they did refine the ghost hunting gameplay for sure in the second game. I kinda like the more creepy atmosphere of the first one a bit more though. Both fantastic games nonetheless.
Not to mention those VERY impressive in game cutscenes
Big Brawler The Hidden Mansion also spams poison mushrooms.
Big Brawler technically Nintendo EAD made the room all Grezzo did was make recovery Hearts next to non existent
Originally Luigis' Mansion was a stereo 3D game, but due to expensive hardware in the early 2000s, it was never released that way. That's why they released the sequel and this game on 3DS.
You need to stay close to the ghost when you flash them to suck them up. Or else they won't get trapped in the wind and will disapear!
Luigi's Mansion was all about solidifying Luigi as a character and not just tall green Mario. It's not that Luigi doesn't have anything interesting to say, he's trying to let us know his interests, which shines through in the "useless dialogue."
Actually you can heal yourself on hidden mansion by going back to the lab lol
Yamazake Whitesky Still tedious.
@@theobserver4214 Never bought the remake but I assume that's still better than respawning
@@ciberkid22 That and any mirror warps you there. It's a Hard Mode, it's supposed to be hard.
Back on the European GCN version saving and dying didn't restore health, so I remember exploring the mansion JUST to try to get more health for the power shut down section.
hey exo when are ya makin that gbc dkc review
I know I'm here kind of late but if you want a challenge for luigi's mansion 1, I've heard getting the LOWEST possible rank is quite a challenge because you have to go out of your way to NOT get money.
I still play the gamecube version.
William White What's your favorite and least favorite portrait ghosts?
William White it looks really good with component or the HDMI adapter
Same
My go-to is dolphin with hd textures. Listening through a surround sound headset makes the ambience even better.
@@theanalogkid2778 the game still holds up
I was around 10 to 11 and my sister 3 years younger when we first got Luigi’s Mansion.
"Luigi never have interesting stuff to say"
This shows me that you are completelly out of touch with why people love this game in the first place
Lmao who cares, charm alone can't save a shitty game.
@@ElizaHakurei lmao imagine having a shitty opinion

@@ElizaHakureiBruh, mfer really tainted an anime character with this LGBT shit

You’re like the only person I’ve ever seen that actually says bad things about lm1 and don’t act like it’s the best lm game in existence. I like it,
Depressed Idiot because he’s not biased
Cool that you like it. You are absolutely entitled to your own opinion. However, if you don't want to hear other people's opinions about a game, don't watch reviews.
Dang I haven’t seen your videos in a very long time, yet they are still great!! 🔥
I love these videos. Keep killing it man
40:48 "Good luck dying to King Boo!"
Me: Hold my Bailey's.
GamerWho What's your favorite and least favorite portrait ghosts?
due to the nature of this being an hour long video there are so many points I want to comment on as luigi's mansion is one of my favorite games of all time and have replayed it countless times myself. But Instead of writing a huge multi-paragraph long post detailing each part of the video, I just want to express my appreciation to the fact this video exists and the amount of time and care put into it!
