More than 100 people have already told me that Conker shouldn’t be in the DS version because he became an adult character so you don’t need to lol. If you want to comment about something else, go ahead~
i used to play both version a lot when i was younger. the n64 was the better one but the the ds version i mainly liked for the online features. i used play online all the time with that game.
I like the fact that the 64 version drops you off and yes you think “I want to race!” Until you slowly realize there’s more of a story and an adventure than just a race.
I wish more racing games had a story. This would have been fun in Mario kart 64. Adding missing modes like silver coins were a cool way to add life to the game.
Me and my friends used to drink and play this. One of our friend group never clicked on that you can steal eggs from other players for a while after they collect them in that volcano mini game. Fun times ^^
Jesus, what did they do to the music? I hate to be that guy who screams "Blargh! The old tracks were better!", but, uh, the old tracks were better. DKR had some of the best racing music ever composed. These new tracks sound like bad midi tunes.
I think it's because of the DS' major limitations when it comes to quality, like video and audio, because it is a pretty small device and they were still testing with stuff. If the game came out on the 3DS/Wii U the quality would be a lot better. But still, the music is horrible.
Alex Harris I definitely agree with what you're saying, but the more I'm thinking about it, I honestly think the majority of the problems in the game was due to rushing something that wasn't ready. The DS was fairly new at the time and I think there was a big rush to make a remake of the game and make money. They definitely had to make changes to the music to conform to the Ds's limits although honestly no idea why they changed some of them. Anyway I believe in the end due to rushed development time and the limitations of the first Nintendo DS, the remake ended up like... this.
OtterloopB - Thank you for being polite. I can't promise you that I won't say it in the future but I have a number of Christian friends IRL and will try my best to not say it around them from now on. I did not realize that I might be offending them.
15:33 totally agree about the fanfare recognizing the importance of first place in the N64 version. Grinding one of the levels until winning makes it super rewarding to have the triumphant fanfare come in. Very comprehensive video! New sub
I just want to clarify that I think the Mario 64 DS soundtrack was a good and faithful remix to the original which means that hardware doesn't excuse the poor quality soundtrack in DKR DS
im wondering if its because of the same reason the soundtrack for the gba remake of dkc3 had to be redone. dkc3's music in the original is really really bass-heavy, and the soundchip for the gba isnt. good enough to deal with it properly, so they were forced to make an all-new soundtrack. the original dkr's OST has a lot of bass, maybe the DS cant handle bass very well
It's not only Nuts & Bolts that referenced Diddy Kong Racing. Banjo's profile in the Xbox version of Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing mentions his first game as Diddy Kong Racing. They got away with it twice lmaoo
this all really is summed up really easily.. old rare just cared for their games like no other company.. they made their games with love in every aspect.
@@ChiefMedicPururu I still don't see how Luigi's Mansion is a demake because it's still the same game despite a lower resolution. To me it's a remake in the same vein as Super Mario 64 DS. It isn't like _this_ where a chunk of the game was cut for gimmickfest 2004 (i.e. replacing the silver coin races with the balloon tapping bullshit) and some of the gameplay experience was at it's core altered in a negative way (i.e. having to rub the genie lamp with your stylus pen). Luigi's Mansion on the 3DS is more or less the same game with quite a few enhancements. There's the 3D which while it is a gimmick, it's not intrusive. They improved the hidden Mansion for US and Japanese players, they added a boss rush mode, they added a multiplayer mode (though tbf it is laggy as hell due to lack of optimization), they added portrait battle, they added platinum paintings, and they tweaked the gb horror. Like Super Mario 64 DS, the worse thing about the game is the controls but even then, for being a game designed for twin sticks it works find in most to all cases and if you absolutely must have that twin stick experience, the CPP is an option. I guarantee you if the 3DS version got ported directly to Switch exactly as (which means laggy multiplayer, 30fps, 240p, dual screens for display) is people wouldn't call it a demake. The only reason why people call it a demake is because of slight graphical downgrades to what was and still is a great experience, whether you play it on the 3DS or GameCube.
@@ChiefMedicPururu I have, but I don't base my opinions off of UA-cam videos. I have played both versions of Luigi's Mansion extensively and my previous comment is based on my experience with both.
Hey, I was a huge fan of Diddy Kong Racing and played both versions pretty exhaustively. Let me share some changes and differences you missed. First off, it should be noted that this is most definitely a remake and not just an enhanced port. The DS version might have the same tracks but it's running on a completely different engine. The physics are completely different and as a result the vehicles all handle very differently from their N64 counterparts. While the N64 favored the lightweight characters, the DS game heavily favors Heavyweights. Character stats have changed a little too. While in the N64 game every character was unique, in the DS version there are a lot of clones. Notably, All three kongs drive handle exactly the same as each other, the only difference being visual. The two new playable characters are amazing, but kinda broken in multiplayer, both being just as fast fully upgraded characters while still in their base vehicles. You covered the sound differences pretty well but didn't touch on the graphical changes. Models tended to be higher poly in the DS version and everything in the game got brand new, more detailed and higher res textures. However the N64 version had more dynamic lighting. Driving under a green light would tint your character green for example. Going through a dark tunnel would cause your headlights and tail lights to turn on automatically. Sadly these little touches were missing from the DS version. The new stage 4 weapons were actually horribly overpowered in multiplayer. I'm going to guess you probably didn't get to try it while it was still online, but all anyone had to do was get the lead and a level 4 green balloon and the race was more or less theirs. those fake coins home in if you get close to them and you'd get 10 of them. They'd just place them on the zippers and make them completely unusable for anybody that followed them. The stage 4 magnet worked like Mario Kart's blue shell and you could guaranty getting it once per lap on most tracks. Finally, the biggest difference in multiplayer was that everybody has to use the same vehicle in the DS version while you could mix and match in the N64 version. This was presumably done because otherwise the online would have been dominated by people that just picked the plane every time, but it would have been nice if the option at least existed locally.
I still remember how pissed and disappointed I was throughout the DS remake and loudly complained to myself of all its downsides. I’ll play the N64 version anytime…
@@Raylightsen His comment is 400 words long. If you can't maintain focus long enough to read 400 words, that's a much bigger problem than having to reduce 400 words to 50 words or whatever the limit of your tiny attention span is.
That is/was exactly my biggest problem with the remake...it just didn´t feel like Diddy Kong Racing 64 anymore without the speed...it is more like Mario Kart. Also the remake just killed Jungle Falls for me...
Looks like it. It's as if they carried over the 50 cc speed data from Mario Kart DS, which in my opinion, felt super slow compared to the other games' 50 cc.
As someone who started with the DS version, I think with the songs, the N64 version has a richer instrumentation, but the DS version has a more well defined melody.
Completionist_ Gamer I tried the N64 version it’s actually really cool I like some of the songs the battle tracks and Grand Prix have single player so I actually like the N64 version as well but not as much as the NDS version but I don’t have a N64! So there
A common complaint is that I'm showing a lot of nostalgia bias in this video however this is only coming from those who didn't listen to the conclusion. Did I not say that I don't completely hate the DS version because of nostalgia? If I apply nostalgia bias then I would be praising the DS version more for reminding me of the N64 version, something I felt in my youth. Playing both games as an adult opened me up to understanding why the original was great and why the remake was a train wreck. The whole point of this video was about not riding on nostalgia while making a remake. Also keep in mind that I do criticise the N64 version and point out positive changes in the DS version like not playing the tracks 3 times in each world. PS: I love both Ocarina of Time and its 3DS remake.
The difference here is the presentation was done better on the original. Presentation is something that a lot of gamers would easily miss. The small details that were a key part of the experience in the N64 original are removed, and that always dampens the feel of the game for older gamers returning to it.
The old one is better in so many ways, it's hard not to feel like it's 'bashing' the new one. But let us not play 'victim trauma' here, he doesn't say the new one sucks because its new, he gives good reasoning. Rest assured, if he had said the new one sucked simply because it wasn't on the n64, I would agree with you
In my opinion, the DS version is better in some ways. I personally think the soundtrack is much more energetic, as the N64 music felt like either the instruments cut out too quickly, weren't loud enough, or there simply wasn't enough instruments playing. Also the new music is fun to listen to as well.
I didn't like the DS version at all. I tried enjoying it, but the bad changes, like the gimmick boost and soulless music, and poor added content like the balloon touch challenge made the game feel like a poorly done cash in. And I believe the AI was dumbed down for the normal racers (although it could be the same AI but the overpowered weapon system changes made it way too easy), which made playing the single player feel pointless. They should have remade it for the Wii/GameCube instead but I believe Microsoft only made games for the GBA and DS because they weren't competing in the handheld market.
Instead of replacing Banjo-Kazooie with Tiny Kong, then could had replaced him with Donkey Kong. I know he's in Mario Kart DS already but it would be a great addition to see Donkey Kong riding alongside his two pals Diddy and Dixie.
You should make more videos on this segment, it was very insightful! I grew up with the N64 version and got to quickly try the DS version and instantly noticed a few differences I felt I should have liked but..didn't. Anyways, Great video!
Too much negativity towards the DS version, video got boring fast. The fact that it had wifi alone was a reason for me to buy it, the N64 is one of the greatest games ever and this was a remake for a mobile console, it did it's purpose and i had great times with it.
That's another one of the game's customization features. Using coins, you can unlock the ability to draw and save up to 4 custom billboards. The Diddy icon is placed where they would go before you have unlocked/drawn any custom billboards.
Holy heck man you're so underrated I thought you would have 20,000 subscribers because of the details of your video. Hope you get more because these videos are amazing
It annoys and baffles me that with this game's fixation on adding things that they didn't finally give Future Fun Land a battle course when it was missing one, and all the other worlds got to have one. That was an actually legitimate problem with the original, and they had a chance to fix it and chose not to but instead made 4 more tracks? On that note, I also find the 4 DK tracks bland, and why did they base them all off the 1st level type? I would've chosen from all 3 games, but even within DKC1, there were a lot of different locales they could've made into tracks. If I were able to pull from all games, I would've had the jungle, factory, beehive, and pipe levels for tracks and the arcade game as a battle arena. I disagree with putting a roof in Spaceport Alpha. It kills the atmosphere; I thought it was so cool getting to see and be in space.
Man, I adore Diddy Kong Racing as a kid but I lost my in 64 and all my game sometime in the early 2000s. I got excited when I heard they were remaking it for DS. I felt a little deflated when I found out they removed banjo and conquer because I adored those characters. Hearing what else was wrong with the game now I'm kind of glad that I passed on the remake. I recently ordered an everdrive and just beat Diddy Kong Racing the other night, you just can't beat the original.
I swear this feels like a Remake or Rebreak episode. I always like reviews like that since it offers points for both ends of the spectrum. Nicely done!
Fun fact. Did you know that Crash Bandicoot 2 was released on the same day as Diddy Kong Racing? Two great games with in two different genres. It's a tricky pick between the two games.
I was so thrilled that my favorite N64 racer would be released on the DS that I bought it the day it was released without reading the reviews. Boy what a mistake. The whole thing just felt off but I couldn't really point out why until now. How could they screw this up so badly.
9:34 The N64 version goes so hard. Absolute banger. Can't believe they changed the song for something *way* more generic-sounding and forgettable for the DS version.
I remember buying this game and then returning it the next day. What did it for me was not being able to play as Conker or Banjo, which were my twi mains back in the N64 version.
CORRECTION: Blame Microsoft. Seriously, they bought Rare, and not only Banjo-Threeie turned into "Cars...CAAAAAARS?!?", but also why they couldn't add in Banjo and Conker (Both of them were by Rare, and since Rare was owned by Microsoft it wouldn't be possible, like Link not appearing in Soul Calibur 2 HD since it was released only for X360 and PS3, and Link was property from Nintendo, considering that he was only in the GC version), but only Conker had any reason to NOT be there even if Rare was not bought (Bad Fur Day), but that is only half the case.
Prince Tricky is Fox's triceratops sidekick in Star Fox Adventures. When that game was being developed as Dinosaur Planet, he was supposed to be the same character as Tricky from Diddy Kong Racing (even using the same model), but the prince was made into a separate character when DP was rebranded as a Star Fox game. This was said in a Q&A on Rare's site.
Interesting video, but I prefer the DS version. The extra features make the game for me. While characters like Banjo and Conker didn't make the cut, the features is what recover it for me. There was a lot nitpicking, which isn't bad, but it is pretty biased if you played the N64 version first. I tried the N64 version and I really love Conker, but I couldn't handle the dated framerate and the Adventure story was pretty long compared to the DS version. Not to mention the missing features. The music is pretty subjective as I prefer the DS remakes. Overall, I think the DS version is the definitive version over the N64. Sure it changed a few things, but they weren't bad. I think they changed for the better. Can't beat making custom tracks! I still find the 64 version fun, but I really can't deal with the framerate as it does hurts my eyes...
Necro-reply, but I agree as well. Both versions have their merits. One of the interesting parts about Nintendo first party games is even if they are remade/re-released, the newer version usually doesn't invalidate the original version. Something that the video never mentioned though is that with the DS,2DS and 3DS consoles being out of production, eventually people won't be able to experience the DS version in its original hardware which removes a lot of entertainment value (DS emulation is fully compatible with any title software-wise even by low-end devices, but the PHYSICAL dual screen layout can't be replicated). The N64 version on the other hand doesn't have any "special" hardware integrated in its gameplay and therefore doesn't have that issue.

Hey hatwearinggamer, I have to say this is my first video I saw from you and I really enjoyed those 42 minutes. It must have took you a lot of time back then I can imagine, but I can tell, watching this was really.. "soothing"? I don't know. I just really liked it. I saw that you did the same "Original vs. Remake" for Super Mario 64 (DS) and I'll watch that too in the next few days. I really hope you're continuing this video series. Well done mate, well done. You earned an honest subscriber.
Really great video :) Loved how you added your personality / humour to it with the editing. The editing must have took forever but it was worth it. I only played the N64 version but from watching this I think I would still prefer the N64 version over the DS one.
13:43 As I luckily still own my DKR Nintendo Power " official player's guide," I can confirm his name is indeed Tricky the Triceratops. Rare has also confirmed that the Tricky from Star Fox Adventures was originally intended to be the same character back when the game was still being developed as Dinosaur Planet.
I had NO idea what the point of the upgrade token in Diddy Kong Racing DS was until I watched this video...keep in mind I've played that game since its release! Nice video!
Yes I was going to comment this but I knew someone would've already said it! The N64 version had lot of bass in all the tracks... DS is a mobile device, and you just have to accept that for the most part mobile speakers lack bass due to size. The majority of these "remixes" are almost the same with an attempt to make up for the lack of bass by using more hits.... The right way to compare these would be to listen to the N64 tracks coming from an actual DS's speakers.
The songs are either rearranged, remixed, or replaced (depending on the song) in an attempt to make up for the DS' horrible soundchip, or rather the lack thereof.
Well the n64 doesn't have one either. My guess is the differences in speakers, cart size or they just wanted to change it for "artistic reasons." The port of super mario 64 also suffered from compressed sounds at time.
damn this is weird. i had this game on ds, but only remember and get so much nostalgia from the n64 clips…my dad pirated games when i was younger (forgive me) but i don’t think consoles nor people were that smart to make an n64 game playable on a ds back then compared to nowadays. i could be very wrong though. seriously confused but i haven’t finished to video yet so i’m gonna carry on😭
Yeah. I'm a BIGGER fan of the N64 version than the DS version. The intro of the N64 is more epic, the adventure mode is more fun to ride around in, the challenges are less for you to draw your own and more for you to battle your opponents in, the music has more meaning of having experience especially more fanfares depending on the position, and the characters are more OK with their own colors. All and all, the 64 version is LOTS better than the DS version.
Actually, Conker became "Raunchy" while he was still with Nintendo. Conker's Bad Fur Day was a N64... ... I actually love the Conker series, I just meant it would be awkward to re-include him.
I Know you said that you recommend the viewer play at least one of these games before watching but you did such a good job explaining everything that it wasn't required at all! Great video! I'm looking forward to more of these if you continue
Great work man! Absolutely loved this video, the analysis was great and you really managed to keep me entertained for every single of these 40 minutes spent watching this. The quality was amazing. The camera shots and quality was great, the gameplay had great quality, and the sound quality was really good too. Ive both checked out most videos of yours (and subscribed ;) ) and i think you could become a really big youtuber someday man! You should definently make more of these type of videos. Alot more people than me would enjoy them too considering the feedback on this one. It could really help your channel grow and for you to improve even more as a youtuber. :) Cheers!
Goodness, this was extensive. This was really well done. One thing I could say, however, was when showing off music, is to show of the tracks from the music were from with the song name at the bottom of top of the screen. That being was, this was really well done! I'm interested in seeing what else you're going to cover in the future (SM64 v. SM64DS is a given).
24:57 “I don’t know why this was made because to be the name, of the track, *Spacedust Alley.* Justifise why there were trees in this futuristic track.”
Man, thank the Lords that I'm not the only one who thought the DS remake was a drawback from the original N64 version. Also, curse the change of voices and sound effects, I got nightmares for weeks the first time I saw Pipsy's revenge face.
Awesome video :D! It was great to go retrospective with both of the games we played and loved. There were a few minor changes not mentioned but the effort was visible. I hope you make this a series and a playlist as well, since UA-cam likes to butcher subscription feeds. Keep up the good work and good luck :)
I really do like the N64 one better. I remember trying to get the upgrades available in the DS version but as soon as you do all the other racers have the best upgrades.
I completely forgot that Diddy Kong Racing got a DS version. Thanks for this video! Also, off topic, but I like your DBZ manga volumes in your room. Rest in peace, Toriyama.
Such a long video, so it's hard to really pinpoint anything to really comment about. I will say that I like that DKRDS actually gives the player a story. I don't like that there is a story in DKR, but it's not told.
People should always improve the bad parts of a game (or anything in life really), not 'change something that is liked'. For example, the coin challenge should not require all coins but perhaps 7+ coins and first place. The extra boosters for Wizzpig are fine as well. The final boss more challenging seems fair though. Additional content is always welcome in the form of good special DK maps, Online play, map creation and fine-tuning bad parts are the only things that was required.
Disliked. Couldn’t even attempt to hide your obvious bias for the N64 version instead of giving a fair comparison. And a lot of the bias came from unnecessary, eye-rolling nitpicks. Like really? The test drive practice before starting adventure mode is an issue for you? I mean let’s just throw away the fact that the game engine was built from scratch and the physics for plane/hovercraft racing can indeed take some getting used to. But I guess that doesn’t justify teaching the player how to race in those modes. And the checkpoint part was ridiculous because you were nowhere near the checkpoint to clear it in the first place but you thought the game would bend to your every will apparently… This was essentially just a nostalgia circlejerk for N64…
This was one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. I remember back when I was around 11 years old I wanted this game so badly so I could relive those classic moments, with the added bonus of being able to create your own custom tracks and change the color of your vehicle. I was hoping to make my own remakes of Mario Kart tracks and the like, and had over a hundred ideas running through my head about what tracks I would make, only to be met with that dream track garbage where all you do is draw a loop and you drive through an empty void. The color customization for your vehicle is just a color multiplier, and doesn't allow you to selectively color the body and stripes. I had ideas for personalizing my vehicle, and they were squashed by the lack of features. This game wasn't only bad, it was borderline deceptive. What it promised it gave the absolute bare minimum. If the game is crappy, fine (not fine), but when a developer promises something only to give the absolute bare minimum effort, that's is just sleazy. This remake is an absolute insult to the original. Removing that Pirate Lagoon theme was the straw that broke the camel's back. That was one of the best songs Rareware ever made and they replaced it with that monotone beach boogey crap. I know it sounds petty to complain about some old obscure DS game but I really looked forward to it. I think Diddy Kong Racing deserves a better remake. Would love to see one for the Switch.
Banjo and Conker are not in DS version because Microsoft own the copyright now, since Rate works for Microsoft. in fact Microsoft got remake of Conker Bad Fur Day on original Xbox and Banjo games on Xbox 360. Regarding TipTup, they didn't care that much.
Great video, man. This was some quality stuff. I've got some suggestions, though so please don't take this the wrong way and I apologise before hand if I offend you. The audio levels need to be checked since there was times the music was too loud and others when I couldn't quite hear your voice so I had to constantly controlling the volume throughout the video. Another suggestion is more like a "you really should do this" kind of thing lol but this right here, this video...is what you should be doing. I was checking some of your older videos and none of them came even close to getting up to 200 views. This video alone got you more likes (556 so far and counting) than you ever got views on your other videos...plus...this one already has over 20k views. I'd say that if you really want to make this channel grow, you should definitely take a bit more time to make these kind of videos until your channel grows a bit more and maybe then start doing let's plays and walkthroughs. But I'd really suggest you focus almost exclusively on these kind of videos. There are already way too many let's play channels on UA-cam but this is the first time I've seen such an in depth comparison/analysis of a game that was entertaining for 42 minutes straight. I know these videos can take up a lot of your time but, man...quality over quantity is always better and this was top quality. Keep it up, man. Really enjoyed this video and I hope to see more. Oh and, again, I'm sorry if I offended you in some way lol just my two cents.
oh yeah, I'm deffs gonna keep doing this stuff from now on. I have no intention or desire for returning to LPing. If you watch my 4 year anniversary video from last April, I express that. And thanks for this awesome comment, I really appreciate that :)
I noticed whenever they make a DS edition of a game they change some stuff like SM64 I didn't like that you needed to be certain characters to get certain stars but that's because I hate playing as Wario
They horribly nerfed the difficulty of the DS version. The 64 original was hard and as such you feel accomplished whenever you win a race especially the boss races. The last one where you are racing the Ganon lookalike on a rocket was very hard.
The DS version was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. My favorite characters were gone, and you couldn't do the key doors in single player.
What the Hell is Diddy, the raging egomaniac, doing hanging portraits of himself all over the place in the DS version? I don't think I remember that being in the original
I'd say the original is way better than the DS. However, i really wish that Rare despite being owned by microsoft, could remake this game on the 3ds, or maybe do a sequel for the 20th anniversary for the game. it would be fun and an improvement over the DS.
Rare actually made the DS remake after Microsoft bought them. But since Microsoft doesn't make handheld games they allowed them to make games on the DS.
@@brogan294 theres a perfect opportunity to make another game on the switch, but I guess with Rare not making anymore Nintendo handheld games, they might be sadly officially done with Nintendo.
DCR was the very first game I played on the 64 and my christ I loved it to death...hell I loved everything about the N64 to death, but the DS remake was a huge disappointment to me. I just need that battle mode.
You've improved MASSIVELY from your last video, and I really liked the last video! I played Diddy Kong Racing DS first, and I had a blast playing it... but I had my quirks. It seems like I would have been better off with the N64 version :/ Ah well, I have the chance to do that now!
The one thing that turned me off the DS one was hearing the voices. I mean, some of them were decent, but they butchered the voices of other characters. SPECIALLY Timber, who is my favorite character.
More than 100 people have already told me that Conker shouldn’t be in the DS version because he became an adult character so you don’t need to lol.
If you want to comment about something else, go ahead~
Conker Shouldn’t be in the Ds version he became an adult character
I’m joking lol
Good video!
He shouldn't be in the ds version because microsoft only allows banjo over to nintendo for smahs not conker
I know the reason why they remove the banana in the DS Version cause speed was OP in the N64.
To make it clear, Banjo and Conker aren’t in the DS version because Rare owns the rights to those characters.
Rare actually owns all characters in the game except for the Kongs and Krunch (because he's a Kremling).

It already has a playlist! :D
hatwearinggamer I really hope that you can do an original vs remake of super mario 64 vs super mario 64 ds
im wondering if its because of the same reason the soundtrack for the gba remake of dkc3 had to be redone.
dkc3's music in the original is really really bass-heavy, and the soundchip for the gba isnt. good enough to deal with it properly, so they were forced to make an all-new soundtrack.
the original dkr's OST has a lot of bass, maybe the DS cant handle bass very well
It's not only Nuts & Bolts that referenced Diddy Kong Racing.
People say Luigi's Mansion for 3DS is a demake...
No, THIS is a demake.
Both are.
@@yogurtgaminglol Have you seen the Remake or Rebreak for Luigi's Mansion?
@@ChiefMedicPururu I have, but I don't base my opinions off of UA-cam videos. I have played both versions of Luigi's Mansion extensively and my previous comment is based on my experience with both.
You forgot to mention the crappy voice changes for most of the characters in the game.

+hatwearinggamer Is it just me or does the remake looks so damn slow in comparison to the original?
Not as powerful hardware so they had to slow down the game speed to make a more stable product!
Handhelds are never as fast as home consoles.
As someone who started with the DS version, I think with the songs, the N64 version has a richer instrumentation, but the DS version has a more well defined melody.
N64 version: bold and brash
DS version: belongs in the trash
As someone who played the DS version and didn't even know there was one on the N64. I 100% agree
@@buzzytrombone4353 aight then
Say what you like but I got the DS version because I have a 3DS I don’t have an N64
@@RPGFlare64 alright, but you should give the N64 version a chance when you can. If you like the DS version, you'll love the N64 version.
Zzzzz, you can't pump out nostalgia bias the whole video and attempt to wipe it in the end!
hatwearinggamer while I probably would agree that the old one is better but you simply can't deny the nostalgia bias my god its all over
The old one is better in so many ways, it's hard not to feel like it's 'bashing' the new one. But let us not play 'victim trauma' here, he doesn't say the new one sucks because its new, he gives good reasoning. Rest assured, if he had said the new one sucked simply because it wasn't on the n64, I would agree with you
Troy Wright If I took a shot everyone he said "it's better" as his reasoning, I'd probs be dead.
The music files probably sound worse cuz they have less bass... but they had to account for the crappy DS speakers.
not true because the music in the guitar hero sounds pretty good for being on the ds

You should make more videos on this segment, it was very insightful! I grew up with the N64 version and got to quickly try the DS version and instantly noticed a few differences I felt I should have liked but..didn't. Anyways, Great video!
Too much negativity towards the DS version, video got boring fast.
The fact that it had wifi alone was a reason for me to buy it, the N64 is one of the greatest games ever and this was a remake for a mobile console, it did it's purpose and i had great times with it.
n64 isn't a game :~)
its still a shitty remake- tacked on very poor everything about it sucked. lost the magic and charm of the original.
No
am I the only one that likes the soundtrack in the ds vision? I like the soundtrack in the n64 vision more but the ds vision is good for me

No explanation about those weird Diddy Kong picture frames scattered in each track? 38:29
That's another one of the game's customization features. Using coins, you can unlock the ability to draw and save up to 4 custom billboards. The Diddy icon is placed where they would go before you have unlocked/drawn any custom billboards.

markasscop Arev its been out for 19 years, how were you not aware of it?
bazla123 that was a troll post,of course I know it now, though if you asked me a few years ago...
never had a 64,i missed out that generation
The Original Diddy Kong on the N64 is EPIC!!
Awesome video mate, loved your humor and the way you express things
@5:33, the wheels on the DS version do not look grainy like they do on the Nintendo 64. What causes the grainy look?
the wheels in the N64 version are compressed 2D sprites that dynamically change based on the camera angle, in the DS version they are full 3D models.
6:59 you complained about small hitboxs when procceeding to avoid the thing completely lol
I disagree with quite a bit of your arguments, specially the music, DKRDS has a great soundtrack.
I'm kinda glad I never played the remake. Some of the changes are incredibly jarring.
It sounds like the only good thing in DS is Tiny's redesign.
I swear this feels like a Remake or Rebreak episode. I always like reviews like that since it offers points for both ends of the spectrum. Nicely done!
I love that series!
I’m willing to bet the extra tracks were the original intent to make a sequel but was canned early on
The DS version was awesome to me and my brother as a kid! We probably still have our old saves too! :)
9:34 The N64 version goes so hard. Absolute banger. Can't believe they changed the song for something *way* more generic-sounding and forgettable for the DS version.
I disagree. I like both songs personal.
Really? In the DS version, the first Wispig race took me HOURS! But the second race I easily beat on my second try.
I think David Wise lost his touch in the DS version but there were limitations in Sound than the N64's.
But the DS version has strangled shrine and its soundtrack, so sound quality doesn't really matter when you have such good music.
I guess your right on that?
I remember buying this game and then returning it the next day. What did it for me was not being able to play as Conker or Banjo, which were my twi mains back in the N64 version.
Blame Rare.
@@ArcadeStriker Hello I'm from 2 years in the future. Microsoft has allowed Banjo and Kazooie to be in Smash. They shall now be forgiven.
no banjo is the worst part of the ds remake in my opinion
I’m really sorry to hear that. I’m a person who enjoys the DS version and I gotta say I’m not sure why Conker and Banjo were removed. 😕
At least Banjo is in "Sonic & All Stars Racing"
I had NO idea what the point of the upgrade token in Diddy Kong Racing DS was until I watched this video...keep in mind I've played that game since its release! Nice video!
You talk about the music being "remixed", but most of those tracks sound almost exactly the same, just compressed for the DS's limited sound hardware.
Super Mario 64 DS didnt have shit sound quality

And the checkpoint part was ridiculous because you were nowhere near the checkpoint to clear it in the first place but you thought the game would bend to your every will apparently…
This was essentially just a nostalgia circlejerk for N64…
I agree with everything you typed. Bring the original to Switch... With online play.
I love it when people don't listen to what I say. It makes me feel good about myself and my videos.

They horribly nerfed the difficulty of the DS version. The 64 original was hard and as such you feel accomplished whenever you win a race especially the boss races. The last one where you are racing the Ganon lookalike on a rocket was very hard.
I’m a 2000s kid so I grew up with the DS version
The DS version was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. My favorite characters were gone, and you couldn't do the key doors in single player.
Spectacular video. You levy well thought out observations in an engaging way.
thanks! :D
hatwearinggamer No problem. Thanks for the quick reply!

Rocks
What the Hell is Diddy, the raging egomaniac, doing hanging portraits of himself all over the place in the DS version? I don't think I remember that being in the original
You can customise those, they're pictures of Diddy by default
I'd say the original is way better than the DS. However, i really wish that Rare despite being owned by microsoft, could remake this game on the 3ds, or maybe do a sequel for the 20th anniversary for the game. it would be fun and an improvement over the DS.
Rare, despite being owned by microsoft, made the DS version :P

Rare actually made the DS remake after Microsoft bought them. But since Microsoft doesn't make handheld games they allowed them to make games on the DS.
@@brogan294 theres a perfect opportunity to make another game on the switch, but I guess with Rare not making anymore Nintendo handheld games, they might be sadly officially done with Nintendo.
DCR was the very first game I played on the 64 and my christ I loved it to death...hell I loved everything about the N64 to death, but the DS remake was a huge disappointment to me. I just need that battle mode.
Great video, really enjoyed it. More of this, please! And you got a new subscriber, hehe.
KamatsuKyoto I second this.
15:08 Pipsy: wtf m8 u made me lose!
You've improved MASSIVELY from your last video, and I really liked the last video! I played Diddy Kong Racing DS first, and I had a blast playing it... but I had my quirks. It seems like I would have been better off with the N64 version :/ Ah well, I have the chance to do that now!
Great job, man.
Keep putting out great material like this!
Cheers
The one thing that turned me off the DS one was hearing the voices. I mean, some of them were decent, but they butchered the voices of other characters. SPECIALLY Timber, who is my favorite character.
Taj sounds like Sir David Attenborough and that is not how he is supposed to sound.
Those touch cahllenges for the bosses were fucking horrible lol
