  • A common problem when knitting in the round using - magic loop or two circular needles is laddering. This tutorial shows how to correct this problem on when using a magic loop to knit socks.
Special thanks to Denise DeSantis - Earthtones Girl for introducing me to the concept of correcting ladders using two needles.

Thankyou for showing this technique. I am a loose knitter as well and have bubbly ladders on both sides of my socks. I have only made four pairs so far and up to my 5th. I will see how I go. Happy New year.

I find that using the mini cables for the Chiaogoo needles makes a huge difference in avoiding ladders especially when you go up to the small needle sizes (2-8). The small cable that goes w/the the small needles is quite stiff & I always get ladders when I use them. You have to get the small to mini adaptors to get the mini cables to fit, but it is totally worth it. The mini cables are so much more flexible than the small ones. Then use this tip on top of the mini cables & you’re golden! 👍👍😄

I love magic loop and I do not have that issue, but I know a lot of people do. Thanks for sharing. I love using the Chiagoo needles and love the circular cables. However, I did notice a potential problem for you and I'll share because it happened to me. You talked about turning the needles together around and then "pushing" the needle in front into position for knitting. However, from watching your video, I noticed that at times the cable would push up in an arc and then you would get it to go on through. I also noticed right at the end of that, that there was a distinct kink in the cable right at the join to the needle. Over time, that will cause the cable to break because it is bending it right at the join. Eventually it will break. It's like bending metal back and forth and eventually it breaks. That is what happened to me. SO-o-o-o-o.....instead, what I do is being careful....I pull the cord that needs to be "pulled" into position until it comes up to the needle join and then I can push it on through to the start position. I hope this is making sense to you. That way you won't be bending the cord to get it into position. I had to purchase another circular needle to replace the one I had and I learned NOT to "push" it into position and to avoid that problem. My second needle has lasted and lasted for years now with no sign of wear on it. Your cable looks to be ready to break or soon could. I hope you will consider what I've shared, as I think we all love our needles and want them to last. Again, thank you for sharing your tips in this video.

This is a very good point! I'm just going to add clarification to your description. At least I think this is what you are saying as it is what I do and what makes most sense to me. Assuming you are right handed, the trick is that BEFORE you turn your work, pull the needle tip that is holding the just knit stitches with left hand just a bit so the stitches are not in danger of falling off and hold on to it. And with the right hand and using the cable loop, gently pull the other needle until the stitches on that side meet the metal of the tip. THEN you can turn the work and adjust each needle to where it needs to be for the next segment. No fear of stitches falling off.

Not sure why this showed up in my feed but I'm so glad it did! Is UA-cam psychic? I'm working on the Montana Mountain cowl in magic loop. I use magic loop and traveling loop a lot. Probably because I'm a lazy knitter who doesn't like to go hunting for just the right sized cable for the project 😁 No more loosey goosey turn stitches! Thank you so much!

Good grief! I knew there had to be a better way, it would just take a more astute mind than my own to figure it out. This goes to show us, it is not "us" the knitter that is in error or not proficient in our skill set, it is the original standard set down that we all follow that needed improvement. The "wheel" has just been reinvented...just better. Thank you so much for this because it is a 100% guarantee fix for everyone.

Im going to try this if I ever try magic loop again. With my new Chiaogoo needles that everybody raves about I had 2 ladders , the other side as well because that cord was so stiff it created a void on the inactive side (hard to explain, im a new knitter)

Hi Angie, I follow Denise too and thinks she’s great. I got very excited when your video popped up in my feed as I really struggle with the heel flap & turn. So I whizzed over to Acorn knits to check out the pattern. Now is says the pattern is knitted up in Arun (U.K. equivalent) then I see that these socks are house socks. I knitting my 2nd pair with 4 ply on 2.25 magic loop version. Looking at your socks with the magic heel, the yellow & green ones, they don’t look as though they’re knitted in Arun or worsted as you call it. Please can you confirm this and how you adapted the pattern. I’m struggling with buying the pattern as our exchange rates against the $ are chronic, so I’m hoping you can help. Reaching out across the Atlantic. Many thanks. Just read this through and it wasn’t very clear what I’m asking. It’s the heal I’m interested😂🫢🫣

Thanks for the tip, I’m working on a second sock now with magic loop, but I’m having more trouble with magic loop than I do with dpns. I did a bulky weight sock magic loop, but I’m pretty sure the second sock was done on dpns.

Phrancko’s method at 8:43 in the video is the only consistent way I’ve found to avoid laddering. It’s consistent because you don’t ever knit a stitch that’s on the loop where you have no control over tension.
Magic loop replaces double-pointed needles right? How many DPNs would you use? At least 3. The magic loop cord is your 3rd needle. In Pfrancko’s method, you move stitches from the cord to your right needle and then knit.

I don’t know why everyone thinks you need to split your stitches in half when knitting magic loop. I knit about 1/3 of the stitches, then readjust the stitches and repeat. I never get ladders. Is it more fiddly, yes a bit but it’s not that bad and you quickly get into a groove. As long as you have a marker for BOR and another for the halfway point if needed you’re good to go.
