This video took more than a year to prepare (mainly collecting these tricks!). Consider supporting my work on patreon so I can record and compile more videos like this one: www.patreon.com/nimbleneedlez Errata: For the "tubular cast-on" alternative, you need to cast-on half the stitches you require +1. (so if you want 20 stitches, cast-on 11)
33:44 if you would do a "Russian purl stitch" would the stitch be good or still warp weirdly? Btw, I love the multi-colour tweed shirt you have on and showed the absolutely perfect neckline. So lovely colours and fun like candy. Do you recall the yarn you used? You are awesome!
I love that your tips are so useful and to the point. I don't have to pause, slow down, double-speed or skip through your videos like I do with some YTers.
I really love your videos. So clear and easy to follow. Everyone should watch them, because we don’t know what we don’t know about until you show us. I hope I’ve made sense, but one thing I know: you certainly have. Thank you.
Norman, before I even watch… I need to praise that sweater you are wearing!! What a wonderful piece!! And it looks gorgeous on you. Thank you as always and here I go to watch :)
I just absolutely love how you can teach everyone from never picking up knitting needles to those who have been knitting for years. Always something new to learn and I get so excited to try them all out after watching your videos. You really bring the joy of knitting to us all and I can't say thank you enough! You are the GOAT of knitting and so appreciated! I can't wait to try every single one of these!
This month was my first knitting anniversary. I remember watching you knit with double pointed needles and thought wow that’s so neat, I want to do that. Well now I can and much more. I have learned so much from you. I have crocheted since I was a little girl but I always avoided charts, but because of you I use charts for knitting and crochet. You are a great teacher, thank you so much!
omg, can we all just take a minute and just admire and be in awe of that sweater Norman is wearing? can we? It's just soooo pretty. What is that magical yarn? I love it!
Lieber Norman, vielen Dank für die gut strukturierten und hilfreichen Videos. Du bringst die Dinge klar auf den Punkt ohne langatmige Umwege. Ich weiß deine Mühe zu schätzen und habe manches schon übernommen 😊. L.G Gabi
Omg Norman, I can't get enough of all the things I'm learning from you! You have such a great deal of knowledge, number one knitter in my book.. thank you so much! Such cool things for knitting. Much ❤️ 😊❤
Thank you Norman. soon i will knit like a pro. your videos have been more than i could ever imagine for taking my knitting to the next level. i love the collar. and the sweater you made.
You are the absolute BESTEST UA-camr out there!!! I sure wish I lived closer to you😊 there is no one near me or a yarn shop, I hv to learn on my own via you❣️
It's such a little thing, but I love the way you use the same signature yarns in all your tutorial videos. It makes your channel instantly recognizable (and so bright and cheerful)!
Thank you Norman. You makes great tortorials. I am trying to get to to point of adding financial support for you. I often go to your tutorials because they are so very helpful. I feel guilty not supporting you monthly. I just want you to know how much you help me with my knitting knowledge. I am hopefully going to be able to start contributing to your generous knowledge for wonderful videos to help the knitting community. Thank you very much.
Hey Trudy. It's the thought that counts. Also, Patreon allows you to cancel a subscription right away. So, while I do appreciate any support, some people only want or can support me for a month and that'S fine as well. ALso, the patron account is there so those who can afford it support my work, so everyone (so those who cannot afford it) get to enjoy knitting knowledge for free, instead of hiding it behind a paywall.
Norman, you are amazing. I was literally tinking something back a row while watching your video so your tip #7 was perfect timing! Now I don't have to stop every 3 stitches or so.
ha!...awesome!...(but now concentrate on doing it right the second time and maybe less distraction from youtube :P...my videos being the exception, "ofc", haha)
Find more about those symmetrical increases under the name Twincrease: because the two new stitches are identical, they are called Twins :))). The symmetrical decreases are often called Bunny Ears decreases...
Back then when you made the bunny ears tutorial I asked you about a corresponding centered increase, and you couldn't think of one. Love seeing that your own knitting repertoire is growing, too... 😊 Back then I was hoping for a neat way to switch from 1x1 or 3x1 ribbing to 2x2, which of course would mean using one of these techniques for purl stitches. I might knit a swatch now just because I'm curious to see if that works out!
Once again, Norman, you have found some great ideas that are easy to incorporate. These are especially helpful right now, I think, as so many of us are midway through our holiday projects!! The neckline hack with the crochet hook is terrific! I actually like the little frame it creates. The brilliant one for me is the centered increase/decrease. This is perfect for the stuffed toys I love to make. Thank you!! The hack I love is using a contrasting piece of yarn as your row counter. Place it across say your 5th row between two stitches, let it drop to the back, and keep knitting. When it looks like you've knit another 5 rows, do a quick count to be sure, then bring the end of that yarn up, and drape it between two stitches, letting it fall to the front. (Over several rows, it looks like a basting stitch running through your work.) If you've gone too many rows, you just pull through the lower row where it should be using a crochet hook or yarn/tapestry needle. It's very easy to do, you can tell at a glance how may rows you've got, and it's right in your work. So you don't need to carry a row counter with you (I don't like using counters that sit on the needle) or worry if you've recorded every row and end up having to count them manually. Also, if the yarn is too short for all the rows (like when knitting a blanket), just tie another piece to it and keep going. Most counters only have two numbers, so if you knit more than 100 rows, you have to remember to add that 100 to the final count.
Che lana hai usato?di che colore?mi piace moltissimo questo filato "confettini"ma non riesco a trovarlo:mi dai un suggerimento per cortesia?questo video è strepitoso❤@@NimbleNeedles
Thank you Norman... I have been hand knitting for over 50 years on and off, and have never seen many of these techniques before... I will definitely save your video and use them!! I also have a flat bed knitting machine and always knit the neckband by hand and I believe your crochet tip will be very useful! 😊 ❤
Oh my goodness - once again, Norman, you have changed my life!! I almost always knit sweaters in the round, and sweaters have such long cast-ons. Now matter how careful I am or what technique I use, inevitably I end up with a twisted join. And of course, with so many stitches, it's very hard to spot the problem until you've knit a row or two - a nightmare. Now I don't have to rip everything out (several times 🙄) to fix the problem! This technique alone is going to save me so much time and aggravation. You are a treasure! ❤️ All the other tips are great, also. The trick for starting a new yarn at the beginning of a row is so clever, and eliminates having to deal with the first stitch being unanchored and loose - plus the bonus of one less end to tidy up later. I also love the non-leaning increase and decrease. When I'm knitting socks toe-up, I use a sequence of individual staggered increases near the beginning and end of each side to get a nice round shape. I don't really like the way slanted increases look in this case, so the straight decreases should be perfect. Thank you, Norman. I always learn so much from you, and just seeing you and hearing your voice makes me happy! 💕
Norman you taught me things I didn’t even know that I needed! This week I have been doing some mosaic work with super bulky and I noticed that the slipped stitch was more loose than I liked. What a simple fix. I feel like a knucklehead that I did not think of your solution. Thank you for this and the other nine amazing suggestions to make my work more finished. Best. Cindy 🐑
I just love the way you have picked up stitches around the neck,it would stop it stretching over time, loooks a lot neater than just picking up the stitches as normal, this could be used to sew a zip into a garment by just sewing into the chain stitch as well❤❤❤
Norman... absolutely loved the new way to join a nother yarn color! Kind of like hale half a Russian join. Will be using this method a lot...thank you!
@NimbleNeedles you are pleasant to listen to and have such an easy (at least on our end) way of explaining things. The calmness in your explanations is encouraging. Your joy for your craft is contagious maybe
Another absolutely Genius video. Some tips were “huh! That’s sooo cool!” Others were, “now why didn’t I think of that?” I also crochet and using a hook to pick up neckline “sts”… (just one fabulous example) Another Saved Video! Thank you, Norman!
I just discovered your channel and I am so glad that I did, I'm in my sixties and I am about to return to knitting, I was used to knitting flat individual pieces for a garment, knit from the bottom up, round needles were only used for socks, but now most patterns are knit from top down, so I must challenge myself.

I've received some helpful tips just in time. I'm currently knitting a sweater from the top down for the first time and I'll need to pick up stitches for the sleeves and collar. I'll make sure to keep my crochet hook nearby for that purpose. Since I also crochet, I don't think it will be too challenging to integrate it into my knitting. Thanks a lot!"
I love your very clear and precise instructions! I’m off to use the chain stitch to put my collar on my sweater. Thank you so much for your dedication and instruction!!
Thank you for this video! I just found your channel recently, and I love listening to you while I'm crafting! I've been watching knitting videos for 21 years, and I only knew about ONE of these techniques already! You are a wealth of amazing information and advice!
Norman!!! You've done it again. Your curiosity, ingenuity, and fearlessness of exploration set you against the rest. You remind us that there are still many many new techniques to explore and invent in hand-knitting. I love your speckled sweater, by the way! The neckline really does look fabulous.
Absolutely amazing the color change with no ends to weave 😍, i always look up your advice and techniques before starting a project and also mid project whenever I get stuck ( which is quite often 😅 being a knitter for only a few years). One little thing i do in fair isle is i hold one yarn English style and the other continental keeping the skeins on respective sides, less tangling and also practicing continental knitting 😊 Thank you again for another invaluable video
Thank you for this very educational video Norman. Your method of picking up stitches is impeccable. I will follow it to the letter! And "chaining" that super long and annoying tail is just genius! You are such great teacher on top of it all. Thank you again!
Norman, this is great. If only I had watched it before my latest project - a Fairisle slipover in 5 colours. I am now left with hundreds of ends to weave in, which I hate. Your colour-joining tip could have saved me hours. I got so absorbed in your video that I boiled apples all over my cooker! I will be trying all your tips and tricks in due course, but first I have to go and clean up the hot, sticky puddle of apple juice before it turns into toffee... 😁 Also, I have a small tip of my own, to help with threading a tapestry needle with yarn. If you fold the yarn and squeeze the loop tightly between finger and thumb, it is then easier to thread the folded loop through the eye of the needle than to thread the cut end of the yarn through. I hope I have explained that adequately. I wish I could send you a video, as it's much easier to do than to describe. Thanks again. J

Thank you for this video! I just found your channel recently, and I love listening to you while I'm crafting! I've been watching knitting videos for 21 years, and I only knew about ONE of these techniques already! You are a wealth of amazing information and advice!
Welcome to my channel then ❤️🥰🧶
Norman!!! You've done it again. Your curiosity, ingenuity, and fearlessness of exploration set you against the rest. You remind us that there are still many many new techniques to explore and invent in hand-knitting. I love your speckled sweater, by the way! The neckline really does look fabulous.
I love it, too I want to knit a second one with yarn from the same dyer 😊
Awesome! Thank you so much. I loved learning along the crochet chain for picking up collar stitches, I will use it in my next sweater!
Definitely try it...it's such a game changer!
Absolutely amazing the color change with no ends to weave 😍, i always look up your advice and techniques before starting a project and also mid project whenever I get stuck ( which is quite often 😅 being a knitter for only a few years). One little thing i do in fair isle is i hold one yarn English style and the other continental keeping the skeins on respective sides, less tangling and also practicing continental knitting 😊
Thank you again for another invaluable video
You’re fantastic Norman, so knowledgeable.
Absolutely mind blowing! Thank you once again.❤
You ALWAYS have the best estate tricks to elevate knitting
Thank you! Those really were knitting tricks I had never seen before! 😮
Love the neat armhole decrease but that neckline chain pick up blows me away. Its looks so professional. WOW!😊😊😊
It really does! But let's keep it a secret how easy it actually is 🤣
Thank you for this very educational video Norman. Your method of picking up stitches is impeccable. I will follow it to the letter! And "chaining" that super long and annoying tail is just genius! You are such great teacher on top of it all. Thank you again!
Please try it out. I just love this method!
You have. I do the same actually
Oh my word…. Just love the ideas, and the excellent videoing- such ideas… thank you loads😉
