I have to say...that this is exactly what I needed! This morning, I said enough excuses....After losing 87 pounds on Keto in 2016-2017, and getting to my ideal weight, I kept if off for a year....and then gained over half of it back in the last 2 years, because my relationship with food was/is still broken. This morning, I told God/Universe that I'd do whatever it takes to get this right for the rest of my life and fix this for good...and next thing I know....I found your videos. Thank you for sharing, and I'm in! I'm doing this. I might be in the corner in a few days crying and shaking like a heroin attic in withdrawal...but I'm doing this! No more excuses! I discovered that I have all the symptoms of a fatty liver, so my main focus is to heal that and everything else will fall into place. I'm full blown Keto for over a year. I've lost over 120lbs. I'm very happy you did this series of transition videos. Great testimony. It's fun to talk about how you lose all the weight afterwards. It's such an accomplishment. I feel so great now but my body is beyond repair. THE SKIN.😬😬😬 However, my skeleton is happy so whatever...😏🙄 Excellent job and thanks again.
@@SeriousKeto I hope so but I have a 600 lb life scenario going on. Lol. I do 16/8 every day. I was hurt and hospitalized in a coma for 6 months and that was followed by 6 years of surgeries and now 9 months of Physical Therapy. Long story... I lost 80% of the weight between a hospital bed and surgeries. Keto is the way... Love your videos and I really appreciate your passion for sharing your journey. Hello Brother, I have been listening to several of your videos and dabbling with Keto but making no progress. This evening I even followed one of your chaffle videos and made my first chaffle! I've been home on oxygen for two months because I nearly died with blood clotts in both lungs. I've struggled with obesity most of my life and currently weigh 450#. I started to loose hope and have been praying and asking God for help. While eating chaffles I saw your 6 part series on your change and here I am. I believe that you and your story are in answer to my calling out for help. Thanks to you for sharing your life and experiences. I found Dr Berry and Neisha and was absolutely blown away by the frankness they both had about current medical practise and beliefs the medical fraternity had about nutrition in general which was basically anti Keto and they were/are on a mission to right these wrongs and I agree with them! I can't get over how much younger you look! I am 52 and feel my face is definitely showing my age. I lost 37 lbs in 2018 on keto and sort of just maintained ever since. You have given me inspiration and determination to get "Serious" again and make this kind of transformation happen for me too! You should be very proud :-)
I went gluten free 2 months prior to starting keto, best thing I ever did. Lactose & lectin intolerance practically start to vanish after a couple weeks on keto. Intestinal gas stopped, carbs were the problem. Blood pressure dropped 40 points. Now, most significant improvement, need to empty bladder in the middle of the night, a least twice if not more, NO more. 3 weeks keto & taking vitamine D3 & K2 decalcification of soft tissues was happening. Get one morning, & had to look at my watch 2 or 3 times, while emptying bladder, yep, one very long time, it's like being 16 again. I'm 48 years of age, this is still improving. Now eyesight... might need less prescription, something is changing. Potatoes? Those were a month ago, I stopped them totally, & I don't miss them. Rice & pasta, went with them. I will never depend on those 3 again. Like 💖 this presentation, gut biome, yes, important factor. Gut healing? Bone broth, collagen, a must! Thankyou for grassroots honesty.🗽👍

Steve, you had me cracking up as you described your various bodily reactions to the diet. That is something most people don't want to talk about but people need to know that dietary changes will indeed result in a change in those bodily functions...and that's usually a good thing.

Serious Keto I was on them 12 years and lately I had constant palpitation barely able to function and spent my mornings in the toilet with colitis also not digesting my food . Gained a lot of weight up to 196 lbs.had back and knee issues I was also given heart pills for the palpitations. Days after starting Keto no more palpitations and took 2 months to slowly get off the acid blockers and began to digest and absorb my food again. I no longer take those medications!
That's awesome. I've dialed back to just taking Pantoprazole twice per week. I'm not sure if I even need it any more and will likely see what happens when I stop completely in the new year.

Steve, I don't normally comment on YT vids but wanted to say thanks for sharing. I jumped into Keto after attempting Atkins for the last 10+ years. I was also inspired by Keto Connect and all the other helpful YT content out there. It makes it so much easier to learn and grow while you are changing your eating habits and getting healthy. My wife has known me to be inconsistent with my diets over the years until now sticking with Keto. I have lost 45 lbs since Oct and still on my way to achieve my weight loss goal of 75 lbs. A little stumble during Christmas, but back on track.... Thanks again for the content and sharing your story.

@@SeriousKeto Steve, thanks for the support and encouragement. Wondering if you have any insight or thoughts to share. Since doing Keto for the last 3 1/2 months, I have noticed my Keto Mojo numbers are all over the place. My numbers where high in the beginning (2.5-3.5) which seems to be normal as your body starts to adapt to producing ketones. In the last month I'm getting much lower numbers. I have started testing before meals to see if I can identify a pattern. I am getting low numbers before a meal as am usually between .02 - .08. I then wait an hour or two after the meal and test again. Those numbers are usually much higher on average (Between 1.5-2.0). I'm convinced that I'm over thinking it and should stop focusing on monitoring my ketones. I seem to be still loosing weight at a rate of 2 lbs per week. I'm just trying to learn and better understand the change in your body's efficiency in producing ketones and how those levels change as you continue to work the Keto diet over time. Especially when working in a IF day or two. There is a lot of info out there and some conflicting data being shared. Net/Net I shouldn't worry about it so much as long as I know I'm in ketosis and I'm loosing weight. Any insight would be most helpful. Thank you!
James Allen I test at roughly the same time every morning. Like you, my numbers earlier in my keto journey were higher. Now, I only seem to go over 1.5 if I’m fasting more than a day. I don’t get hung up on “optimal ketosis” vs “nutritional ketosis”. If you’re feeling great and the pounds are coming off, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Keto Connect is a great channel, but to tell you the truth, since finding your's, I don't watch KC as much. I think it may be because I have more in common with you than Matt and Megan. I KNOW that I can learn something from everyone out there; however, as soon as they say something that I don't like (usually political or religious)... I'm done listening. That is a HUGE problem for me that I've been trying to work on... learning humility can be a tough pill to swallow. Funny thing is although I do Keto, I was intently listening for some new weight lose miracle (old habits die hard 😂) and you lost me at potatoes... of course being a T2 diabetic, two weeks of potatoes would put me in the hospital. This is an awesome series. Thank you so much for sharing... it's very inspiring.
It takes me about 4 days on a potato hack (basically what you did) to get into ketosis. You can feel the extra energy that comes. I tested in on my keto mojo and sure enough - ketosis. Once you use up the calories from the potatoes your body relies on fat, since it's not really possible to eat enough potatoes to keep up with your daily nutrition requirements.
Protein is definitely important for building muscle...but obviously you weren't trying to compete in strongman competitions. I've been watching your channel for awhile, your one of the few people that come across as a real person to me...sometimes when you tell us about your fallbacks it's more helpful because always own it and get back on track, while telling us the reasons for slipping and then how you got back on track.....👍✌️
I came across this channel while learning about keto for my girlfriend’s sake (she’s Type 2 diabetic). I’ve been watching bunches of the vids and this one had me laughing. I don’t eat keto, and was a vegan for thirty years. Eating plain potatoes is fine by me. 🙂 I live very differently from most folks, off-grid in northern Maine. Been living outside since last May, and cooking over a fire if I cook. Everything takes a long time. When I eat, I eat a lot, just to stay warm. A pound or two of potatoes is nothing. My GF and I are going to homestead together, and I raise livestock so she can eat keto and be healthy. We’ll see what kind of changes we both undergo. I know one thing that’ll make a huge difference for her: the sheer amount of manual labor involved in a subsistence life. Drawing water, walking to town, shoveling snow, swinging a scythe, riding a horse. Everything is work. Anyways, highly enjoyed the video, and learning a lot. Looking forward to supporting my beloved in her health journey.

Thanks so much for sharing Steve. When I first started in May I had already lost around 40 of the 70+ lbs lbs I had gained with my son (he’s 20 months). When I first started I watched the big gurus.... Dr Berg, T.D., Keto Connect etc. Since then I’ve lost the other 30+another 10 am in maintenance mode around 125-127; maybe another 5 or 10 to go but this is a lifestyle - I don’t mind if it takes a while! I still weight myself every day and though I don’t use a spreadsheet I use the weight guru app with my scale which is interesting to track progress and see what affects you. Point being - since I’ve gone into maintenance I’ve dialed back the YT videos and I’m so glad I’ve come across you. Any time I see you’ve uploads I watch it right away if I can. It’s great to see someone like you who does this as more of a passion project; someone who is a real person living his life and documenting what has worked for you. I also love the cooking inspiration - I love to cook and have a ridiculous amount of cooing gadgetry (if you ever feel like breaking out your sous vide (I think you mentioned having one before?) I’ll be right there with you! I love my joule :-) Thank you so much for this series - I would have loved to see your journey when I first started out; and I’m really happy to see how much better you feel both physically and spiritually. You are SO REAL Steve! Many things came out of this for me BUT I REALLY thought about the potato phase. The only real thing I have missed by being KETO is French Fries. I realized as I thought about what you said ~~ it isn't really the potatoes as much as the deep fried vegetable stick! LOL I will truly not think of them the same in the future. I know we can fry radishes, turnips, jicama, etc. so I will concentrate on the fried portion. You are so analytical in your approach it is so refreshing. LOVE this series. Happy New Year Steve. Thank you for parts one to three, a very interesting and compelling experience. I've lost almost 95lbs, slowly and seemingly thus far no disturbing side affects so I consider myself very lucky. You're so lucky you discovered a methodology that was readily adapted and works, I am genuinely glad good fortune and healthful benefits continue to flow. Thank you for sharing your life-changing journey, major transitions be they psychological, physical and lifestyle are a moment by moment undertaking - at least for me, not that easy but with sufficient motivation very achievable and readily maintained. Totally, one's point of view regarding food - it's consumption and underlying thinking certainly requires honest review, analysis and remedial action. Re-framing one's attitudinal frame of reference isn't an overnight thing, there's no quick fix. It's like a 360-degree turnaround to food, physicality and I'd venture to suggest even spirituality - and - water. For me, my journey's been not only about rethinking food, exercise but also my water consumption. I'm grateful I've an opportunity to turnaround my health and well being, grateful too for the opportunity this platform affords in providing stories like yours that reinforce positive healing, in no small way a myriad support for personal resolve in ameliorating obesity and it's significant impacts.

I am enjoying listening to your journey. I have lost and gained 80 lbs and yo yo back and forth so much it is exhausting. Looking for inspiration to pick up the pieces and try again, as I know that I am leading myself up to health problems as I get older. Just turned 40 this week, and fortunately haven't been affected by diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol. I have so much discipline for so many areas of my life, but my weight is an Achilles heel that I can't master. Thanks for giving us "normal people" hope and direction. Sounds like giving your gut a break healed your gut. I managed to heal my gut through fasting. Giving your gut a break from eating all sorts of things that aren't good for you can make an incredible difference. While I don't really eat potatoes, they are far better than most things we eat, though I would advise against that sort of diet if you're diabetic. Glad to hear it worked for you though.

Steve! Great series. I also have GI issues. Tried almost everything avail. Low carb has always been the easiest on my body and brain. You should make a t-shirt that reads, Straight Up Potato. Ugh, Im irish and we love our potatoes but as a general rule, we cook our potato with fat! :)
Your story is so close to mine its crazy. I hit 278LBS in April and acid reflux+heart burn every night, Sweating while cooking or walking to car ect.... When I got my picture taken with a Star i liked. I noticed my size and I said. NO MORE. Time to change. So I did research and when i heard about Keto and you could eat meat and bacon and loose weight. That sounded amazing to me as I ate alot of meat and rarely veggies. So Did more research and realized that their is 2 types. Clean and Dirty Keto and most people recommended Dirty to start so it would be easier to change and stick with it and slowly change to a cleaner keto style later when the body and cravings are more controlled. First week I lost 14lbs. Knowing that after it would dramaticly slow down but to a more healthy and natural weight loss so i started loosing 1-2lbs a week after. After 8 months I am sitting at 211LBS with 67LBS Lost. And rarely do excerise (other than work and some walks sometimes). The more i watch videos from people like Keto Connect and You ect.... The more ideas I get. Sometimes I go more healthy so fattier meats, don't use Vegetable oils anymore as they are unhealthy, Dark Yolk Brown Eggs as they taste so much different and I like them ect... So I am currently in a Mix of Dirty/Clean Keto and loving it and finding it easy to stick with. Only cheated (went off the plan) for 1 day this summer at my 3 month mark to celebrate 3 months of weight loss and that it was Calgary Stampede so had to have a bunch of sweet, fatty treats all day lol. And now near my 9 Month mark doing cheat number 2 which is only because I really want Mashed Potatoes and real Stuffing with my turkey as Calliflower mashed ect... is good for regular meals but not fancy like Xmas dinner so ill splurge for the day then go back to keto to continue as my goal is to loose another 45lbs. But the biggest changes I notcied after 1 month. Was NO HEARTBURN or Acid Reflux since i started Keto. And i have Spicy peperoni and hot wings all the time now and NOTHING :D. My Diverticulosis hasnt acted up since i started which my doctor told me that weight was probably what was causing the attacks. I feel more Energy and happier with myself. It has been a great journey and will be continuing this. I even started calling this a Lifestyle instead of a Diet. Because its something you can go out of on the occasion as long as you still love doing keto most of the time. For me ill be mostly just Keto till i get to my main goal so 20g carb a day and maybe increase that to 50g or what my body will keep me in ketosis to maintain after i reached my goal. Thank you for your videos as they help greatly with my LIFESTYLE. And great to hear your struggle and successes with your journey as they are so similar to mine.

Well i'm glad that diet worked for you, if we stop eating (fasting) we will loose weight also, it seems that it was only your will power that make it work, give youself the credit for that, thats the main thing that i take from it, the math is simple, eat less and better(quality and variety) exercise more(ingest less-spent more calories), hope your videos will inspire others, thanks for sharing your experience, may the universe be aligned for/with you.
Great content! Keep it up! FYI, my wife baked and cooled some potatoes for me, and my glucose went DOWN 30 POINTS after eating them! That trick really works! I'm a recovering diabetic and I'm not on meds anymore, and I can eat potatoes AT WILL! :)
I am a BIG fan of keto, but I did try the potato diet. Not even strict though. I used seasonings (with no sugar and no fats at first). I still had diet drinks (monster and soda). I eventually started drinking my coffee again too. SF creamer and a chocolate one. Anyway. I did it for a week and lost like 5lbs. I only boiled them. Found I liked the yellow ones the best and yeah. I personally found it VERY easy to follow, probably because I wasn't being super duper strict. And I could've gone longer, but by the end, I was craving carrots of all things. Even if you're not super strict with it, it's still a great "reset" IMO. Also, I'm insulin resistant and it didn't seem to have an impact on that. That's JUST me though. Someone else that's insulin resistant might not be so lucky.

Thank you. Going vegan (only for 8 weeks), was an important step for me because it got me to appreciate the vegetables that would wind up being an important component of my keto lifestyle (and that I honestly should be part of most any dietary lifestyle).
Hi. I went back to watching your earlier videos and came upon your transformation series- watching them.in reverse order ! So it looks like you lost most of your fat on the Preston diet? Is that right? Did you continue to loose weight on keto? How much potatoes did you consume per meal/day. Did it raise your blood sugar.? Did you add sufficient fat on your salad days as compared to the keto diet ? It is tempting in terms of weight loss but not the unpleasant side effects :)
Each of us has a unique take on what we need to eat, how easy it is to maintain a dietary plan, and whether the ends justify the means. Thus, for some people vegetarianism is the logical answer. For others, we enjoy meat too much to give it up. I've been learning everything I can before I start keto in January, and am already planning shortcuts in the kitchen because my health issues mean my daughter does the cooking. Reality has to meet amicably with intent so I'm not overly burdening others in my journeying. I boiled it all down: Lymphedema means my weight can change more or less overnight when I have a "bad" or a "good" day... so I have to realistically ignore those fluctuations while aiming for an overall weight reduction. The aspect of keto that interested me here was that ketosis pushes fluids out through the bladder quicker... thus meaning I MIGHT be able to drop two medications over time... both of which cause dry mouth issues. The foods I can eat with keto are ones I tend to really enjoy anyway, with minor exceptions: can't stand avocado or bell peppers, for instance. The foods I will have to give up are ones I will rarely miss. I call that a win-win scenario. The next reason has to do with reflex, something I've lived with (and been medicated for quite a while for) for over thirty years. I might be able to drop that medication in time too, and thus remove yet another cause of dry mouth... leaving only the cpap and my age to trigger dry mouth coughing... and with three out of five mouth dryers gone, that coughing may ALSO be reduced to negligible. I have had a cancer scare in the last six years, and while the treatment I have is working, the real solution is surgery... which they won't even talk about unless I weigh about fifty kilos less. This is why I looked into a diet in the first place. I have just under two years to get to the point where surgery MIGHT be considered... sounds like a plan, doesn't it? Lastly, because I'm on blood thinners for life, I cannot take medications for inflammation as they affect how the blood thinner works. But keto is naturally geared to reduce inflammation... so yet another positive... My daughter just accused me of being excited about my plans, and I find that I truly cannot deny it. I AM excited at the prospect of a diet I can use effectively without too much hardship. But I'm giving myself a month to decide if I can live with keto long term. I think I can, but nothing is sure in life... except that we are all born, and we all eventually die. I just want to enjoy the journey. Thank you, sir, for sharing your life with us, for helping me understand how some things are easier than others, and what to expect. You inspire me... which is not easy to do because I'm an old (60) woman with major health issues trying to find a method to fix some of those issues naturally. Fortunately, I am not diabetic, and my heart is fine, but other things are currently stressing me out enough that I appreciate when people share how to make life less difficult, or help in understanding exactly how to achieve what I want.
Thanks for sharing. I heard Penn’s advice about not working out when I was a month in to my keto journey. I am very thankful I did, as I was getting stressed because I wasn’t. Why stress the body/ joints when diet is the key to weight loss. Add exercise in after you have gotten to a reasonable weigh. Just another BS line from our medical community to go along with SAD. Exercise is important for cardio vascular health, but weight loss is almost entirely diet based.
I try to make clear to people that I'm not saying doing cardio is bad. As you said, it's important for your cardio vascular health -- but you can't outrun your mouth.
I didn't realize there were no spices on the potato diet the first 2 weeks. Kudos to you for sticking it out for 2 weeks only on potatoes. But yes there is a great lesson here about knowing/experiencing real hunger when all you can have is potatoes. I can imagine our paleo ancestors saying I'm fasting today as I'd rather not have Woolly Mammoth again:)
I love Keto Connect- they helped me also.....Dr Berg started my journey to getting healthy and happy. I've had a couple weeks, here and there, where I just didnt want to eat, didn't feel like fixing food, nothing sounded good.( I dont like avocado or cream cheese, as well as a bunch of other stuff and dont have a lot of variety of foods to choose). I haven't exercised since Sept when started keto. Lost 23-25 lbs, little muscle loss but mostly fat that I couldnt lose walking 2 to 3 hrs every day(13 to 15 miles) for months and lifting weights. I felt like I was killing myself while eating low fat/med carbs and keeping my body fat 😟. I was miserable. I feel really good now and plan on starting back walking and weight lifting in a week or so after issues caring for my elderly parent slacken up some. I tried to get my kids on keto but they still like all the junk and not ready to give it all up. I have loved hearing about your story and I'm glad you have found something that works for you and can work long term.

I'm glad I don't live in the US as having a conversation and opinions should not be like walking on eggshells. 🙄 But no, some people over there believe they have the right not to be offended, so discussions are off the table... P. S. I love these long videos, and your voice is very suitable for radio work.
You pretty accurately nailed the "right to not be offended" culture that exists in the US these days. Yet these same folks, upon taking offense, feel completely free to spew vitriol at the person they feel offended them.
@@SeriousKeto sadly, I worked for an American company headquartered in what I suppose is the cradle of this kind of beliefs. I noticed how the easily offended were abusing the company policies and diversity program left and right, to the point that the various "minority" / diverse groups were at war with each other and the company had to accommodate any whimsical request (one colleague demanded the right to walk barefoot all day as if it was his constitutional right) or step into each petty dispute as not doing so would have exposed the company to liability issues re. alleged discrimination. Besides, no matter what "you" do is never enough for these people. Even apologizing when not needed, would not stop the hatred. Again, I'm glad I don't live there. 😑

I have to say...that this is exactly what I needed! This morning, I said enough excuses....After losing 87 pounds on Keto in 2016-2017, and getting to my ideal weight, I kept if off for a year....and then gained over half of it back in the last 2 years, because my relationship with food was/is still broken. This morning, I told God/Universe that I'd do whatever it takes to get this right for the rest of my life and fix this for good...and next thing I know....I found your videos. Thank you for sharing, and I'm in! I'm doing this. I might be in the corner in a few days crying and shaking like a heroin attic in withdrawal...but I'm doing this! No more excuses! I'm full blown Keto for over a year. I've lost over 120lbs. I'm very happy you did this series of transition videos. Great testimony. It's fun to talk about how you lose all the weight afterwards. I was hurt and hospitalized in a coma for 6 months and that was followed by 6 years of surgeries and now 9 months of Physical Therapy. Long story... I lost 80% of the weight between a hospital bed and surgeries. Keto is the way... Love your videos and I really appreciate your passion for sharing your journey. Hello Brother, I have been listening to several of your videos and dabbling with Keto but making no progress. This evening I even followed one of your chaffle videos and made my first chaffle! I've been home on oxygen for two months because I nearly died with blood clotts in both lungs. I've struggled with obesity most of my life and currently weigh 450#. I started to loose hope and have been praying and asking God for help. While eating chaffles I saw your 6 part series on your change and here I am. I can't get over how much younger you look! I am 52 and feel my face is definitely showing my age. I lost 37 lbs in 2018 on keto and sort of just maintained ever since. I went gluten free 2 months prior to starting keto, best thing I ever did. Lactose & lectin intolerance practically start to vanish after a couple weeks on keto. Intestinal gas stopped, carbs were the problem. Blood pressure dropped 40 points. Now, most significant improvement, need to empty bladder in the middle of the night, a least twice if not more, NO more. 3 weeks keto & taking vitamine D3 & K2 decalcification of soft tissues was happening. Get one morning, & had to look at my watch 2 or 3 times, while emptying bladder, yep, one very long time, it's like being 16 again. I'm 48 years of age, this is still improving. Now eyesight... might need less prescription, something is changing. Potatoes? Those were a month ago, I stopped them totally, & I don't miss them. Rice & pasta, went with them. I will never depend on those 3 again. Like 💖 this presentation, gut biome, yes, important factor. Gut healing? Bone broth, collagen, a must! Thankyou for grassroots honesty.🗽👍

Serious Keto I was on them 12 years and lately I had constant palpitation barely able to function and spent my mornings in the toilet with colitis also not digesting my food . Gained a lot of weight up to 196 lbs.had back and knee issues
I was also given heart pills for the palpitations.
Days after starting Keto no more palpitations and took 2 months to slowly get off the acid blockers and began to digest and absorb my food again. I no longer take those medications!
That's awesome. I've dialed back to just taking Pantoprazole twice per week. I'm not sure if I even need it any more and will likely see what happens when I stop completely in the new year.
Serious Keto do it slowly but do it.

Steve, I don't normally comment on YT vids but wanted to say thanks for sharing. I jumped into Keto after attempting Atkins for the last 10+ years. I was also inspired by Keto Connect and all the other helpful YT content out there. It makes it so much easier to learn and grow while you are changing your eating habits and getting healthy. My wife has known me to be inconsistent with my diets over the years until now sticking with Keto. I have lost 45 lbs since Oct and still on my way to achieve my weight loss goal of 75 lbs. A little stumble during Christmas, but back on track.... Thanks again for the content and sharing your story.

Wondering if you have any insight or thoughts to share. Since doing Keto for the last 3 1/2 months, I have noticed my Keto Mojo numbers are all over the place. My numbers where high in the beginning (2.5-3.5) which seems to be normal as your body starts to adapt to producing ketones.
In the last month I'm getting much lower numbers. I have started testing before meals to see if I can identify a pattern. I am getting low numbers before a meal as am usually between .02 - .08. I then wait an hour or two after the meal and test again. Those numbers are usually much higher on average (Between 1.5-2.0).
I'm convinced that I'm over thinking it and should stop focusing on monitoring my ketones. I seem to be still loosing weight at a rate of 2 lbs per week.
I'm just trying to learn and better understand the change in your body's efficiency in producing ketones and how those levels change as you continue to work the Keto diet over time. Especially when working in a IF day or two.
There is a lot of info out there and some conflicting data being shared. Net/Net I shouldn't worry about it so much as long as I know I'm in ketosis and I'm loosing weight.
Any insight would be most helpful. Thank you!
James Allen I test at roughly the same time every morning. Like you, my numbers earlier in my keto journey were higher. Now, I only seem to go over 1.5 if I’m fasting more than a day. I don’t get hung up on “optimal ketosis” vs “nutritional ketosis”. If you’re feeling great and the pounds are coming off, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I KNOW that I can learn something from everyone out there; however, as soon as they say something that I don't like (usually political or religious)... I'm done listening. That is a HUGE problem for me that I've been trying to work on... learning humility can be a tough pill to swallow.
Funny thing is although I do Keto, I was intently listening for some new weight lose miracle (old habits die hard 😂) and you lost me at potatoes... of course being a T2 diabetic, two weeks of potatoes would put me in the hospital.

It takes me about 4 days on a potato hack (basically what you did) to get into ketosis. You can feel the extra energy that comes. I tested in on my keto mojo and sure enough - ketosis. Once you use up the calories from the potatoes your body relies on fat, since it's not really possible to eat enough potatoes to keep up with your daily nutrition requirements.
Protein is definitely important for building muscle...but obviously you weren't trying to compete in strongman competitions. I've been watching your channel for awhile, your one of the few people that come across as a real person to me...sometimes when you tell us about your fallbacks it's more helpful because always own it and get back on track, while telling us the reasons for slipping and then how you got back on track.....👍✌️

I came across this channel while learning about keto for my girlfriend’s sake (she’s Type 2 diabetic).
I’ve been watching bunches of the vids and this one had me laughing. I don’t eat keto, and was a vegan for thirty years. Eating plain potatoes is fine by me. 🙂
I live very differently from most folks, off-grid in northern Maine. Been living outside since last May, and cooking over a fire if I cook. Everything takes a long time. When I eat, I eat a lot, just to stay warm. A pound or two of potatoes is nothing.
My GF and I are going to homestead together, and I raise livestock so she can eat keto and be healthy. We’ll see what kind of changes we both undergo.
I know one thing that’ll make a huge difference for her: the sheer amount of manual labor involved in a subsistence life. Drawing water, walking to town, shoveling snow, swinging a scythe, riding a horse. Everything is work.
Anyways, highly enjoyed the video, and learning a lot. Looking forward to supporting my beloved in her health journey.

Thanks so much for sharing Steve. When I first started in May I had already lost around 40 of the 70+ lbs lbs I had gained with my son (he’s 20 months).
When I first started I watched the big gurus.... Dr Berg, T.D., Keto Connect etc. Since then I’ve lost the other 30+another 10 am in maintenance mode around 125-127; maybe another 5 or 10 to go but this is a lifestyle - I don’t mind if it takes a while! I still weight myself every day and though I don’t use a spreadsheet I use the weight guru app with my scale which is interesting to track progress and see what affects you. Point being - since I’ve gone into maintenance I’ve dialed back the YT videos and I’m so glad I’ve come across you. Any time I see you’ve uploads I watch it right away if I can. It’s great to see someone like you who does this as more of a passion project; someone who is a real person living his life and documenting what has worked for you. I also love the cooking inspiration - I love to cook and have a ridiculous amount of cooing gadgetry (if you ever feel like breaking out your sous vide (I think you mentioned having one before?) I’ll be right there with you! I love my joule :-)

You are SO REAL Steve! Many things came out of this for me BUT I REALLY thought about the potato phase. The only real thing I have missed by being KETO is French Fries. I realized as I thought about what you said ~~ it isn't really the potatoes as much as the deep fried vegetable stick! LOL I will truly not think of them the same in the future. I know we can fry radishes, turnips, jicama, etc. so I will concentrate on the fried portion. You are so analytical in your approach it is so refreshing. LOVE this series. Happy New Year Steve. You're so lucky you discovered a methodology that was readily adapted and works, I am genuinely glad good fortune and healthful benefits continue to flow. Re-framing one's attitudinal frame of reference isn't an overnight thing, there's no quick fix. It's like a 360-degree turnaround to food, physicality and I'd venture to suggest even spirituality - and - water. For me, my journey's been not only about rethinking food, exercise but also my water consumption.
I'm grateful I've an opportunity to turnaround my health and well being, grateful too for the opportunity this platform affords in providing stories like yours that reinforce positive healing, in no small way a myriad support for personal resolve in ameliorating obesity and it's significant impacts.

I have to get back on track. I'm so happy I found your channel. Like you, I thought I liked potatoes. I don't love them plain. I'm on day 3 of potatoes. I'm not having fun, just like you said, but I'm going to fight through it. I have never looked forward to eating salad, but I am now! Lol! Thanks again!

I am enjoying listening to your journey. I have lost and gained 80 lbs and yo yo back and forth so much it is exhausting. Looking for inspiration to pick up the pieces and try again, as I know that I am leading myself up to health problems as I get older. Just turned 40 this week, and fortunately haven't been affected by diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol.
I have so much discipline for so many areas of my life, but my weight is an Achilles heel that I can't master. Thanks for giving us "normal people" hope and direction.
Hopefully THIS TIME will lead to sustained results...

Sounds like giving your gut a break healed your gut. I managed to heal my gut through fasting. Giving your gut a break from eating all sorts of things that aren't good for you can make an incredible difference. While I don't really eat potatoes, they are far better than most things we eat, though I would advise against that sort of diet if you're diabetic. Glad to hear it worked for you though.

Steve! Great series. I also have GI issues. Tried almost everything avail. Low carb has always been the easiest on my body and brain. You should make a t-shirt that reads, Straight Up Potato. Ugh, Im irish and we love our potatoes but as a general rule, we cook our potato with fat! :)
Your story is so close to mine its crazy. I hit 278LBS in April and acid reflux+heart burn every night, Sweating while cooking or walking to car ect.... When I got my picture taken with a Star i liked. I noticed my size and I said. NO MORE. Time to change. So I did research and when i heard about Keto and you could eat meat and bacon and loose weight. That sounded amazing to me as I ate alot of meat and rarely veggies. So Did more research and realized that their is 2 types. Clean and Dirty Keto and most people recommended Dirty to start so it would be easier to change and stick with it and slowly change to a cleaner keto style later when the body and cravings are more controlled. First week I lost 14lbs. Knowing that after it would dramaticly slow down but to a more healthy and natural weight loss so i started loosing 1-2lbs a week after. After 8 months I am sitting at 211LBS with 67LBS Lost. And rarely do excerise (other than work and some walks sometimes). The more i watch videos from people like Keto Connect and You ect.... The more ideas I get. Sometimes I go more healthy so fattier meats, don't use Vegetable oils anymore as they are unhealthy, Dark Yolk Brown Eggs as they taste so much different and I like them ect... So I am currently in a Mix of Dirty/Clean Keto and loving it and finding it easy to stick with. Only cheated (went off the plan) for 1 day this summer at my 3 month mark to celebrate 3 months of weight loss and that it was Calgary Stampede so had to have a bunch of sweet, fatty treats all day lol. And now near my 9 Month mark doing cheat number 2 which is only because I really want Mashed Potatoes and real Stuffing with my turkey as Calliflower mashed ect... is good for regular meals but not fancy like Xmas dinner so ill splurge for the day then go back to keto to continue as my goal is to loose another 45lbs. But the biggest changes I notcied after 1 month. Was NO HEARTBURN or Acid Reflux since i started Keto. And i have Spicy peperoni and hot wings all the time now and NOTHING :D. My Diverticulosis hasnt acted up since i started which my doctor told me that weight was probably what was causing the attacks. I feel more Energy and happier with myself. It has been a great journey and will be continuing this. I even started calling this a Lifestyle instead of a Diet. Because its something you can go out of on the occasion as long as you still love doing keto most of the time. For me ill be mostly just Keto till i get to my main goal so 20g carb a day and maybe increase that to 50g or what my body will keep me in ketosis to maintain after i reached my goal. Thank you for your videos as they help greatly with my LIFESTYLE. And great to hear your struggle and successes with your journey as they are so similar to mine.

Well i'm glad that diet worked for you, if we stop eating (fasting) we will loose weight also, it seems that it was only your will power that make it work, give youself the credit for that, thats the main thing that i take from it, the math is simple, eat less and better(quality and variety) exercise more(ingest less-spent more calories), hope your videos will inspire others, thanks for sharing your experience, may the universe be aligned for/with you.
Yes the key to my success is that the joy and comfort of food is gone. I eat to live. Food no longer has any power over me.
Great content! Keep it up! FYI, my wife baked and cooled some potatoes for me, and my glucose went DOWN 30 POINTS after eating them! That trick really works! I'm a recovering diabetic and I'm not on meds anymore, and I can eat potatoes AT WILL! :)

I am a BIG fan of keto, but I did try the potato diet. Not even strict though. I used seasonings (with no sugar and no fats at first). I still had diet drinks (monster and soda). I eventually started drinking my coffee again too. SF creamer and a chocolate one.
Anyway. I did it for a week and lost like 5lbs. I only boiled them. Found I liked the yellow ones the best and yeah. I personally found it VERY easy to follow, probably because I wasn't being super duper strict. And I could've gone longer, but by the end, I was craving carrots of all things. Even if you're not super strict with it, it's still a great "reset" IMO. Also, I'm insulin resistant and it didn't seem to have an impact on that. That's JUST me though. Someone else that's insulin resistant might not be so lucky.

Thank you. Going vegan (only for 8 weeks), was an important step for me because it got me to appreciate the vegetables that would wind up being an important component of my keto lifestyle (and that I honestly should be part of most any dietary lifestyle).

Hi. I went back to watching your earlier videos and came upon your transformation series- watching them.in reverse order ! So it looks like you lost most of your fat on the Preston diet? Is that right? Did you continue to loose weight on keto?
How much potatoes did you consume per meal/day. Did it raise your blood sugar.?
Did you add sufficient fat on your salad days as compared to the keto diet ?
It is tempting in terms of weight loss but not the unpleasant side effects :)

Each of us has a unique take on what we need to eat, how easy it is to maintain a dietary plan, and whether the ends justify the means. Thus, for some people vegetarianism is the logical answer. For others, we enjoy meat too much to give it up. I've been learning everything I can before I start keto in January, and am already planning shortcuts in the kitchen because my health issues mean my daughter does the cooking. Reality has to meet amicably with intent so I'm not overly burdening others in my journeying.
I boiled it all down:
Lymphedema means my weight can change more or less overnight when I have a "bad" or a "good" day... so I have to realistically ignore those fluctuations while aiming for an overall weight reduction. The aspect of keto that interested me here was that ketosis pushes fluids out through the bladder quicker... thus meaning I MIGHT be able to drop two medications over time... both of which cause dry mouth issues.
The foods I can eat with keto are ones I tend to really enjoy anyway, with minor exceptions: can't stand avocado or bell peppers, for instance. The foods I will have to give up are ones I will rarely miss. I call that a win-win scenario.
The next reason has to do with reflex, something I've lived with (and been medicated for quite a while for) for over thirty years. I might be able to drop that medication in time too, and thus remove yet another cause of dry mouth... leaving only the cpap and my age to trigger dry mouth coughing... and with three out of five mouth dryers gone, that coughing may ALSO be reduced to negligible.
I have had a cancer scare in the last six years, and while the treatment I have is working, the real solution is surgery... which they won't even talk about unless I weigh about fifty kilos less. This is why I looked into a diet in the first place. I have just under two years to get to the point where surgery MIGHT be considered... sounds like a plan, doesn't it?
Lastly, because I'm on blood thinners for life, I cannot take medications for inflammation as they affect how the blood thinner works. But keto is naturally geared to reduce inflammation... so yet another positive...
My daughter just accused me of being excited about my plans, and I find that I truly cannot deny it. I AM excited at the prospect of a diet I can use effectively without too much hardship. But I'm giving myself a month to decide if I can live with keto long term. I think I can, but nothing is sure in life... except that we are all born, and we all eventually die. I just want to enjoy the journey.
Thank you, sir, for sharing your life with us, for helping me understand how some things are easier than others, and what to expect. You inspire me... which is not easy to do because I'm an old (60) woman with major health issues trying to find a method to fix some of those issues naturally. Fortunately, I am not diabetic, and my heart is fine, but other things are currently stressing me out enough that I appreciate when people share how to make life less difficult, or help in understanding exactly how to achieve what I want.

Thanks for sharing. I heard Penn’s advice about not working out when I was a month in to my keto journey. I am very thankful I did, as I was getting stressed because I wasn’t. Why stress the body/ joints when diet is the key to weight loss. Add exercise in after you have gotten to a reasonable weigh. Just another BS line from our medical community to go along with SAD. Exercise is important for cardio vascular health, but weight loss is almost entirely diet based.
I try to make clear to people that I'm not saying doing cardio is bad. As you said, it's important for your cardio vascular health -- but you can't outrun your mouth.

I didn't realize there were no spices on the potato diet the first 2 weeks. Kudos to you for sticking it out for 2 weeks only on potatoes. But yes there is a great lesson here about knowing/experiencing real hunger when all you can have is potatoes. I can imagine our paleo ancestors saying I'm fasting today as I'd rather not have Woolly Mammoth again:)
I love Keto Connect- they helped me also.....Dr Berg started my journey to getting healthy and happy. I've had a couple weeks, here and there, where I just didnt want to eat, didn't feel like fixing food, nothing sounded good.( I dont like avocado or cream cheese, as well as a bunch of other stuff and dont have a lot of variety of foods to choose). I haven't exercised since Sept when started keto. Lost 23-25 lbs, little muscle loss but mostly fat that I couldnt lose walking 2 to 3 hrs every day(13 to 15 miles) for months and lifting weights. I felt like I was killing myself while eating low fat/med carbs and keeping my body fat 😟. I was miserable. I feel really good now and plan on starting back walking and weight lifting in a week or so after issues caring for my elderly parent slacken up some. I tried to get my kids on keto but they still like all the junk and not ready to give it all up. I have loved hearing about your story and I'm glad you have found something that works for you and can work long term.

You pretty accurately nailed the "right to not be offended" culture that exists in the US these days. Yet these same folks, upon taking offense, feel completely free to spew vitriol at the person they feel offended them.
@@SeriousKeto sadly, I worked for an American company headquartered in what I suppose is the cradle of this kind of beliefs. I noticed how the easily offended were abusing the company policies and diversity program left and right, to the point that the various "minority" / diverse groups were at war with each other and the company had to accommodate any whimsical request (one colleague demanded the right to walk barefoot all day as if it was his constitutional right) or step into each petty dispute as not doing so would have exposed the company to liability issues re. alleged discrimination.
Besides, no matter what "you" do is never enough for these people. Even apologizing when not needed, would not stop the hatred.
Again, I'm glad I don't live there. 😑

I'm really happy I found your channel. Thank you so much for sharing. Everything you are saying speaks deeply to me. I lost 98lbs over a year on keto, but have gained it back after 2 years. I've been thinking about doing the potato thing to kick start be back into keto. It's great to hear someone else doing this.
