- This song...STONES...ah, what can anyone say about this song? You just listen to the "la la la la la la la la of the stones" and you feel.
Like many of Neil Diamond's songs, it's open to the listener's interpretation. Some have suggested that it's about a girl's mental illness (stones in her head) others think it might just be about a girl with a broken heart. Whatever it may be, it's deep and I would rather not try to impose my own thoughts here. It is a thing of beauty, meant to be relished. This was one of the first songs I heard of Neil Diamond and became a fan since that moment.
I hope you will enjoy the video - specially as it is accompanied by a song you will certainly enjoy.

Thanks for the great memories. I used to have this album, bought it when it was first released. Mr. Diamond said stones are the things that hurt us, ala "sticks 'n stones", painful memories, etc.

As you also say, painful memories can be like stones along with things like harsh words and actions, unfulfilled dreams and so many things. Comments on this particular song are of special interest to me because it was the first song that drew me towards his music. Great that you have the album :)
Sorry but I no longer have the album. Too many years ago and my brother loaned my complete album collection along with several of Neil's to a friend of his and I was never able to get them back.@@Nas18
fits the times very well. really love Neil DIamond from this period (early 1970's) you can tell he went through some sort of reflection and transformation as a songwriter and performer from the sixties to this. Well done.
