Stones was one of those early compositions by Neil Diamond that made him stand out from his other songwriting peers. A deep and thought provoking song about hurt and deep love, and relates to what we long for, to be protected from those things that hurt us.
The main character in the song has only ever known hurt, and she longs for someone to take away the pain, and lo, that someone comes along to show her love, and as the lyric beautifully states, "To let the Sun in" and continue to harvest their love and plant new seeds of love and happiness.
The video captures the song wonderfully, its beautiful images frame the new found love, and joy, and the hope for a better and brighter future as they begin on the path of a new beginning.
I love and admire the dedication of the video, to maintain and preserve this wonderful and beautiful planet. Once again Doug, you have treated us to another masterful video with clever hidden messages. Thank you.

That, and also to shine probing a light on the true meaning of this great song. I endeavour to do what I am able to, and hope to achieve them through my videos. My video... your words... a complete picture framed.
So glad that you took the time and effort to note the little "hidden messages"... there are a few, but the two that I wish to highlight are - 1. The word "Home", I resisted the urge to insert an actual home as I felt that home is where the heart and loved one is and not a physical building as such. 2. The inclusion of Mother Earth at 3:33.
This album contained the song that made me a fan for life, 'I Am... I Said". This was one of two albums I purchased, after having been hooked on this song, the other being ‘Sweet Caroline’.
The destruction of our environment powered by abject greed, the ill-treatment and slaughter humans and animals... unforgivable. Humanity needs to come to its senses before it is too late. To quote Profess David Suzuki, CC OBC FRSC -
_“A balance between sustainable ecology and sustainable human life, on the one hand, and the unfettered drive for profit, on the other, is just an oxymoron.”_
_“We’re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone’s arguing over where they’re going to sit.”_

Thanks for your kind comments Barbara, much appreciated. Up against Dave's ability with words, I fade into insignificance. Hence the reason I reached out to Dave when the idea of a Neil Diamond dedicated website first came to me way back in 2016. I remember reading Dave's beautifully constructed almost poetic comments on UA-cam in previous years. I then contacted Dave the only way I knew how... via UA-cam, to ask him if he would consider teaming up with me. Me with my videos and Dave as our website's Scribe. With so many wonderful songs in his catalog, it can be hard to choose a favorite. But, in my mind, Stones is easily Neil's best song. The music, the lyrics, the vocals all combine to hit all my emotions to the core. Thank you for this brilliant performance!!

_I Am... I Said' has to be my absolute favourite Neil Diamond song. Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._

🦋 "Stones"....what a beautiful special song 🎼🎶. It is one of my three most favorite Neil Diamond songs from the 70's along with Play Me and Longfellow Serenade.
I played the Stones album so much at home when I was going to college. My Dad listened with me a lot. He played guitar and really liked the guitar in this song. Such a great song! 🩷💗🩷

I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me...

I think my favorite song is Shilo,i had a freind back in the 70s,i was kind of wild back then she married a guy that worked for my dad,she was older than me and i worked for my dad and we always argued for some reason,she divorced the guy that worked for my dad not long after they were married,but she was always around and like a big sister to me,if i needed a place to stay she would let me stay with her after my dad and i would get in a argument,nothing ever happened,i respected her alot and she was like a big sis, the song Shilo always reminds me of her,i have no idea where she is now,but i play Shilo all the time,those were good tough days growing up in the 70s,in fact it was her that introduced me to Neil Diamond 8 track tape man but as long as we had Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley we could make it.

This has always been my favorite Neil Diamond song for 40 years or so and it's not til now that I realize he didn't write it at all. Yet, it sounds totally like a Diamond song for sure. Though I really like this song, I still don't have a clue as to what it's all about. If I were to guess, it's about sickness and death and the hurt that lingers from it and festers for life sometimes. But, that's just a guess. I st4ill enjoy playing it on my guitar and singing it with karaoke. And, I do it pretty well I think...?

Just (re) watching for ( and from )another time your ‘ S t o n e s ‘
presentation ; ‘video’ does not sound at all, appropriate. Your imagery delight’s in it’s … ‘appropriateness’.
As always, beauty and nature - and the ‘beauty of nature’, abound. Neil’s
word’s and music have, oftentimes,
succinctly melded those two life-affirming ‘stays’ of any correct thinking and feeling, heart, mind and soul, to a higher ‘place’, ‘viberation’ or sense of the ‘unseen’, that just somehow, through the portal of his being and creativity, we can reach.
Hence the comments about this song taking some people, myself included, to a point of tears, within just a few bars of it’s playing. I don’t quite know just ‘ w h y ?..’ and nor does anyone else similarly attuned. ( I was going to use the word ‘afflicted’ … but that would be inaccurate) ‘ attunement ‘ is more correct. The question is just ‘ how ‘ does such a simplistic song melody likened with equally simplistic lyrics attest to SO very much of, what is laughingly described as ‘The Human Condition’ - ?.. but it does. Is it the levels of hurt that very many experience, experienced because of the ‘ others ‘, that both fold into and
then flay out of our lives … the very
‘ s t o n e s ‘ of the title that we attempt to lie down upon, and over which no amount of ‘adjustment’ of our laying torpor can comfort. For myself, it remain’s so sacred a song that for many-a-decade I could only bear to play it a (very) few times a year. Even as a just-turned 15 year-young ‘colt’ on first hearing in October, 1975, I knew in seconds that here was something of so deep a conviction, that, it was ‘too special’ to visit, too often. As I stated - an …‘ attunement ‘ of sorts. And to recall that perfect description by Neil of his
equally ‘ other - worldly ‘ gift to us all, namely, his ‘ Serenade ‘ album :
“ A serenade , a hymn of sorts , at most , a small potion for the soul. “
As I explained in your recent ‘ Mama Don’t Know ‘ er, ‘upload’ … for myself,
this almost incandescently bright yet lowly candle-form ; by which I mean it’s and therefore ‘his’ earthly attachment to us all in humanity writ large, was, most definitely of the 70’s almost in it’s most original form. And, as Neil said in concert on his return to The Greek, in 1976, whilst introducing that consummate song of a similarly disconcerting longing, ‘Lady - Oh ‘,

@@NeilDiamondCentral I would have added a bridge to help better explain, somewhat at least, his relationship w this woman he is singing about. I get you can use your imagination but I feel it would have added just another layer to the song and extended it for the listener's pleasure. I have to add, however, that when this song was released in 1971, songs were encouraged to be kept to three mins or less (there's multiple reasons why this was true). So, that could be one of the reasons this hit, one of Neil's biggest, is the length it is. The orchestration in this great love song pulls at the listener's heartstrings. Lee Holdridge was the principle arranger who went on and, by 1975, worked nearly exclusively w John Denver for many years.

@@NeilDiamondCentral Yes, so true. Holdridge was one of the best and the albums/songs mentioned by ND are fantastic. When it comes to songs, some folks are "melodics", some are "lyrics" (where melody or lyrics are preferred over the other); many will say they are both. A beautiful melody w poor lyrics destroys, imho, a song just as great lyrics with a terrible melody would. But, in the end, I am a lyrics guy because the words and how they are delivered matter more (to me) than the music behind them. What makes a great song to me? Both great lyrics married to a fabulous melody. Be well. R
