Neil Diamond on Parkinson's and "A Beautiful Noise"

- The life of singer-songwriter Neil Diamond has been dramatized, "warts and all," in the Broadway musical "A Beautiful Noise." Diamond, now 82, talks with correspondent Anthony Mason about continuing to sing; his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (a condition for which he was, he says, long in denial); and about the calm that has - finally - moved into "the hurricane of my life."

" You are the sun..I am the moon..you are the words..I am the tune..play me"...I hope he truly realizes how much his music has meant to the world..
His music has brought so much joy into my life.
songs you brang me?
💜💜💜
That song was stuck in my head this morning, and now I see this amazing interview & read this beautiful comment. ❤️
@@CameraGirl011 I had a sing of his stuck in my head yesterday. Wound up digging out his cds & binge listening to his music on a road trip yesterday
Take it easy Neil. You deserve it. You’ve given the world of music a gem, you are a real diamond.
"...you are a real diamond." - Truth!
So true!! What a legend to say the least. ❤️he has given us some amazing music.
Neil, the real Diamond. Amen!
Been a fan since the beginning. Love the man and his music. ♥️🎶♥️
Great comment & I agree.
For many years my family was in the funeral business. One funeral stands out for me because of Neil Diamond. Sometime in the 90's the father of one of Diamond's roadies died. As I remember, the band at the time, was in Australia. It was probably going to be impossible for the roadie to get home for the funeral until Neil Diamond said to his people, "Buy that kid a suit and get him on a plane." When the roadie's mother sent him off to rejoin the tour, he was carrying the mother's gift for the "Jewish kid from Brooklyn." It was a crucifix, blessed by the parish priest. I shall carry this story of Neil Diamond's kindness with me always and I know the roadie's family is forever grateful. Thank you, Mr. Diamond.
Pure class … and a big heart 😊
Heartfelt story thank you for sharing, Kiwi fan of Mr Diamond.I loved this mans music and stage persona. His off stage sounds just as dignified.❤
Thank you❤My husband has been fighting Parkinson’s for 12 years and since you have always been my favorite as I pray for you I’ve wanted to know how you are doing. Now I know how to pray for you✝️God Bless you and your wife 😊
He is truly beloved. You can see despite Parkinson’s he still retains who he is inside.
I have enjoyed your great music 0ver the years. Take care of yourself and God bless and give you peace

His music was the soundtrack to my childhood
Mine too

Same here!
Same here. I felt like he was my musical father raising me to love music particularly his.
Without a doubt
Neil Diamond is an American treasure
An American treasure loved worldwide.
If you say do.
He belongs to us all - he has well and truly transcended any one nation.
Indeed
Praying for you Mr diamond. You will live on forever with your beautiful music.
My mom’s name was Caroline and she was jokingly SURE that Neil Diamond wrote that song especially for her! She loved his songs! Toward the end of her life in 1981, I took her to see Neil in Denver! I think her life was complete! 😊 Her other favorite was Olivia Newton-John.
Your mother had great taste in music. Neil Diamond and Olivia Newton John were my favorites as well. Great artists, and great human beings.
I was the lunch lady at the school where his son went. Nice man and fortunate to see him in concert in Los Angeles and his style is impeccable. His music has been throughout my life and his words so telling. 🙏
Neil is one of the best singer songwriter performers of all time. His music will last forever through his own songs and other artists’ interpretations of them. We all wish him the very best at this challenging time in his life x
Agreed
Absolutely gorgeous when he was younger - still handsome now. But the spirit within the beautiful container is the most important - and Neil is still proving he can dig deep under the surface to expose the reality. Strength to him!
Agree
Yes, gorgeous...yes, handsome. Andddddddd SEXY, even today (Parkinsons or not) as he has always been, and will always be the most talented, handsome, sexy...did I say talented (?) artist there has ever been. Thank you, Neil, so much! ❤ (I cannot believe that I am crying.) PS - Back in my mother's time...she would call him 'Bubala'. I'm sure Neil knows what it means.)
He might just be the best American performer to have ever lived. He will be loved by many millions forever.
Nah. Thats Sinatra. Then Dylan
@@careful__Icarusno it isn’t Neil is the best
Neil, We love you.
None of us live forever, as we live we we all write the story of our life and its the legacy we leave behind that lives forever. Your music was and is medicine for my soul- I battle Autoimmune diseases and like you my sister battles Parkinson’s. She has for a decade or so- She is an amazing artist and I am a retired nurse. We who believe are all part of Gods love- and worldly life is not meant to last forever. We live for something greater than this life. God Be with you and may your guardian angels surround you and bring you peace.
Thank you! ❤
Neil Diamond is one of a kind. A true class act in the music industry.
Isso é totalmente verdade, Neil foi, é e sempre será grande! Neil é o talento em pessoa.
Thank you, Anthony for this beautiful interview. Thanks too to CBS. Neil Diamond fans needed this boost!!
Well said...and I absolutely agree.
Wait…you “needed” a boost? As Neil goes, you go? Neil dies…YOU die? I like Neil’s music but I would never confuse any celebrity for a deity. Get up off your knees!
Who are you replying to, me? Yeah, news on Neil Diamond and his well-being does indeed give me a boost. What gives YOU a boost? Perhaps it's a goose!
@@rodneybaer4324 - You’ll excuse me for saving my energy for my family and my friends. I do not grovel at the feet of celebrities, any celebrity…clawing at their sleeves crying “I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy!” Now get up off the floor and clean the spittle from your quivering mouth and hear me: Neil Diamond doesn’t know who you are nor does he care. Now go get yourself a “boost” by getting a life!
thank your your words he's a real international to people suffering from a terrible illness ❤brave lucky to have his wife and 👪 family & us his fans 🎉
There will never be a brighter, more humble star in the universe. Neil Diamond, I wish you the best always, may all the joy you've spread come back to you, Sir! So much love surrounds you!
I will always always love him and his music. My eight year old son, who was hit and killed by a 16 year old driver, an accident, watched his movie America. He would sit and listen with the old fashioned big earphones. He loved his music. Prayer for Mr. Diamond. 💕
Its sad to see him physically breaking down and sounding weak. This man is a national treasure.
Well, he’s 82 years young now. I think without the Parkinson’s diagnosis he’d still be out there performing.
Indeed. I'll cry, every time I hear a Neil Diamond song now.
It happens to everyone eventually
I've been a Neil Diamond fan since the 60's! I learned how to play music from his songs. I still play along with his songs and I'm 70 years old. THANK YOU NEIL FOR A LIFETIME OF GREAT MUSIC!!!
His music is timeless
I second that. I'm 72, and Neil Diamond 💎💎💎💎 is without a doubt a one of a kind legend! Maybe he doesn't see himself that way, but we who are his fans do. And we will be with him forever because his music is the stuff of legends 🎵💖🥰💎! I support you Neil Diamond! I grew up listening to you and I still do. 🎶💕🥰💎🌹😘
Neil Diamond is truly a diamond
Thanks for the likes and your comment over my post, thanks for being a fan of mine 🥰
I have adored Neil for 50+ years. It is what it is now, but I still see that hauntingly gorgeous, hugely talented young man in his eyes.
Neil will never know what he means to the world. He says,”I’m just me”. JUST ME, I know of no other celebrity that has had a story of his life …a tribute to the humble, driven and amazing singer/songwriter/actor that he is….performed in his honor…”warts and. all…while he is still alive. Few have this honor after they have passed on. Have been to many of his concerts….have never been disappointed. He is a true gentleman…and an AHHHHHMAZING human being. There will never be another Neil Diamond. He is a gem who will never lose his dazzle!🔥❤️💎
Thanks for the likes and your comment over my post, thanks for being a fan of mine 🥰
So humble. I'm 53 and still listen to his music. I adore his songs.
I'm 71 and still listen to his music!!
I'm 54. My dad took me to a Neil Diamond concert in June of 1983. I was 14. I went to see him perform again in 1986 & 1989. The other day I bought the Live In America double cd from the 92/93 tour. Been listening to it constantly. Now this interview falls into my lap. I'm just so, so grateful. On stage he is like GOD himself. I still call him uncle Neil. What a man. Nobody else like him, and it's going to hurt so much to lose him.
62 here. Been a fan since I was 6 years old.
Am 56 and been listening him since I was12. His music has no generational bounds. He always sounds great and always will.

Absolutely! I got my young nieces and nephews hooked on Neil Diamond when they found out Donkey from ‘Shrek’ was singing a Diamond song ‘I’m A Believer’.
Hearing him sing his songs still gives me shivers. Sweet Caroline, America, I am..I said, Song Sung Blue….way too many to mention. Such a talented man.
...and so many of his "less popular" songs are his best.
Like you? Neil, we love you, and we always will. You were the voice we couldn't muster, the thoughts that we couldn't hear in ourselves. Thank you!
Saw Neil Diamond still at his peak. One of the best gigs I have ever seen. Hope hes with us for many more years
Saw Neil at Madison Square Garden around 1993. The concert was electric and so magical. I have never seen a crowd so excited. Probably he best concert I have seen in my life, and I have seen Paul McCartney, James Taylor, and The Beach Boys. All masters in their own right.
The best best concert I ever went to was Neil with a 12 piece orchestra at the Minnesota State Fair. wow...
So did I in Dallas. He was fabulous! My favorite of all time.
I saw him in Florida in the 1970s. He was fabulous.
Have seen him several times…the absolute best …even went once with my parents.. how many kids do that ?
I’m proud to say I’ve always loved Neil Diamond. Absolutely lovely soul.
Me too! And seeing this little clip actually made me cry. He always said, if you knew his music, you knew him. I knew him well.
Thanks for the likes and your comment over my post, thanks for being a fan of mine 🥰
Niel Diamond last of the old greats. He brought a lot of happiness to people and they will never forget his heart for his music.
Neil Diamond has always been one of my heroes. Growing up in the 60's -70's he was a giant. I played drums with a traveling road band and we did a LOT of Neil Diamond's songs in our show so his music became the soundtrack to my life. It's so hard seeing him in this condition. It is with great grace and humility he has accepted his condition. Neil Diamond has had a long and blessed life and he's achieved remarkable fame and fortune. Yet he is still plagued by insecurity and self-doubt as we all are, thus he is human. Parkinson's is tough. Aging is tough. All we can do is approach our lives with gratitude and grace and follow our hearts to pursue our passions and live everyday to its fullest. Hopefully we will someday have a cure for such diseases. Thank you Neil Diamond for all the great music you've given us and continue to give us.
I met Mr Diamond years ago in a professional capacity. He was very gracious, and down to earth. When we spoke, he addressed me as his equal, there was no "Star" B.S. at all. I had long been a fan of his music, but from that day on, I was a fan of the man himself. As he said here, there is no cure for this cruel condition, but sir, I wish you "peaceful sufferance" as you deal with it.
God bless this musical legend whose music has brought incredible joy to millions around the world.
Amen
Verdade!! Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷❤❤❤❤

@@NeilDiamond-xv6vk The real Neil Diamond doesn't respond to posts. Nice try.
What makes Neil Diamond one of the best is his need not to feed his own ego. He kept touring for his audience. Being as open as he's been, I hope that all of us take a little life lesson from him. It's not just about the people that love you... it's about the people you love.
My mom and I saw this gentleman in concert in the 1970’s.
There was every generation in the audience. It was magical!
The thing I've always like most about him, is that he seems like an average guy gifted with an extraordinary talent, who used it all the way!
My mother absolutely adored him. His music was always playing in our house. My husband is 66 and was just diagnosed with PD. It has helped him to hear stories such as Neil's and Michael J Fox and see that it doesn't have to define you. He's in the very early stages so I think he is still in the acceptance phase. We live each day as it unfolds. I hope my husband can arrive at the same place of quiet peacefulness with his diagnosis.
Right. It's Parkinson's, not YOUR Parkinson's. Be blessed.
So many moms liked him and Barry Manalow
@@dirkbag22 I understand that. But when you are married you are a part of your spouse's diagnosis as a care partner. I can never fully understand the process of coming to terms with having PD. But I do have to understand how PD progresses and what may or may not happen to my husband so I can be there to help him and support him in the best way I can.
@@Julieglam3 the good news is, the older you are when diagnosed the slower it will progress and you have a better chance of a normal life span. My dad and his sister died of it so I've learned a few basics. We kept hoping for a breakthrough. They're always working on it Maybe one will come.
And, YES, you are part of it. A loving spouse gets their life changed too. Good luck.
thank you for sharing your personal story... I feel Neil & his wife are being strong for others .. his music 🎶 🎵will love on and this interview should be shared 🙌 ❤️
My father had Parkinson's disease most of his adult life, so I know the good and the bad of Parkinson's. It is a journey, and my heart goes out not only to him but also to those who are close to him. Parkinson's not only affects the person but family as well.
I have loved his music 🎵🎵🎶 since I was a child.
My favourite song was Girl, you'll be a woman soon.
So many great 👍 songs to choose from. They are all Great.
I Loved the movie ' the Jazz Singer ' Neil you are in our Prayers along with your Family.
I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis.
My Mom had Dementia so we know what you and your family is going through. Look up Healthy foods that cleansing out the toxins from your body .We love 💕 you Neil. Don't give up God can Heal anything if we have Faith & believe it can happen
Thank you. This is something to which I can also relate. Coming to terms with the most difficult symptoms is difficult.
@fpinzow Depending on how bad it gets, you will see changes. I never knew my real dad, Parkensons, robbed me of that. That was how much he changed. People generally think of trimmers, but it also affects their personality. Good luck, ever have questions let me know.
@@binksterbI'm going through it now with my mom. Such a hideous disease. All the best to you!
@goaskmymom1350 Just remember they have no control over their disposition. God bless you on your journey.
Wow....what a great attitude he has. He is Americana at its very best. God Bless Neil Diamond and may God have mercy on him. He is a true Artist.
Saw Neil Diamond perform on his last tour. Incredible 3 hour show, life story, stories, visuals, about the songs, never forget it.
Same here! It was my 15th ND concert and it was epic!
I've been a HUGE Neil Diamond fan since about 1967. For many years, his music was the only performer's music I would even buy. I would listen to records, tapes, and CDs of his for, literally, hours on end. I was pretty obsessed with him. Yeah, as a younger man he was so easy on the eyes, but his music really resonated with me. His talent in composing lyrics and the music to go together is unsurpassed. I am sad for him that he has been struck with Parkinson's but he sure has had a great life. God Bless him!!!
Who doesn't know most of his songs word for word! He is an awesome singer!
His voice is GOLDEN ❤
So are his balls.

Neil Diamond is one of the greatest singers, songwriter and performers ever!! I saw him in concert twice. Two of the best concerts I've ever attended!! God Bless You!!
Brooklyn born and great lyricist.
One of the greatest songwriters of our generation. Thanks for all the amazing music and memories.
An unforgettable man. His songs carry the magic of that moment in time.
Saw him 17 times since 1973. Simply the best. Sang the poetry of life.
Wow! You have been lucky to have experienced such greatness
Of the 17 did any one stand out from the others? Were you at the "Hot August Night" shows at the Greek?
@broadcasttttable never saw him in LA. The best seats we ever had were in 2nd row in Cincinnati.
Neil Diamond, Done Too Soon.
One of the all time greatest singer songwriters. I absolutely LOVED him in the 80's. I could sing every song, word for word, from his "12 Greatest Hit's Album." The songs on that album were a part of me in the 80s. As the sun sets on Neil Diamond, he leaves an amazing musical legacy and is a true musical LEGEND.
Thank you, Neil Diamond. Your songs have been the soundtrack of my life.
He will always be a national treasure. I've loved him since I was a child. I'm 60 now. God bless you sweet Neil
Neil, when the quiet comes...the peace isn't far behind. So happy for you and your wife that you are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. No one that I can remember has given so much to his fans and the music so many of us love. Bless you buddy.
Yes
The great Neil Diamond!!
I was born in 79. I hadn't had the opportunity to see him in his beginning years. But I can tell you know, despite not "growing up" in the heyday of his musical career. HIS MUSIC and his LIFE still had a profound meaning for me in the 80's and 90's and dare I say even today , some 44 years later. In fact, the appreciation for what he gave this world in song is finer than it ever was and ever has been. Neil is a true gift to those who love the art of song and music! I wish him well and THANK YOU!
I am, I cried… and I am now.
What A Powerful Interview.
❤❤Love This Man ❤️❤️
4/2/23 Its so hard to see him go down hill. Just like when we had to face Glenn Campbell. LOVE & MISS Neil!!
It’s not “down hill” but a different chapter in his life. We all will experience our phase of getting older.
I've loved him since the 1960s. Over 30 concerts from 1977-2017, meeting him. This is breaking my heart. I can't stop crying.
Neil Diamond still sings wonderful! So many great songs. I still watch The Jazz Singer every once in a while just to see him sing.
I just watched it last week, I love that movie.❤
Me too!
He truly is an “ICON”! Loved his music for years and love him for sharing his life.
It’s a Beautiful Noise! And so much more…. Thank you, Neil Diamond and Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show.
A touching and poignant interview. Humble and true as Neil shared his experiences. My dad loved Neil. He is fantastic. We saw him twice in the 80s and the last time I saw him was a few years ago (all in Dallas). Anthony's interviews are endearing and informative with knowledge of his subject. He allows space for the person to express oneself. We love you Neil. 🕺
Neil Dimond is still one of the greatest singers of all time.
Getting old isn’t for the faint of heart, but we are blessed to be here, limitations and all. Your music will live forever by those who love you and your music.
Just listening to AMERICA the other day. My God, the love of country he has in his voice whenever I hear that recording always brings a tear to my eye. I keep forgetting that was for THE JAZZ SINGER remake back in 1980. To know we're losing this great talent to this unforgiving disease just tears at my heart. God speed, Neil Diamond. When you're final judgment comes, may the Good Lord bless your soul. The good always outweighs the bad. A tip of the hat to you, sir...❤
Then I guess you haven't seen someone in end stage Parkinson's. It is devastating. There is no good to outweigh it. This man knows what is coming for him.
@@Cathy-xi8cb I'd beg to differ. My reference to GOOD OUTWEIGHS THE BAD was in regards to the output of talent Mr. Diamond presented to the world. 50+ years of great music, and the memories to go with it. Obviously, he knows what's coming. And the earthly ravages of Parkinson's doesn't segregate. IT DESTROYS ALL. We the living can only hope that, as I've already stated, the good outweighs the bad in his final judgment. ❤
Legend 💜 love him. Such a gentle soul.
The WORLD LOVES YOU! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I cried when I heard about his diagnosis, it hurt because I been loving him for 46 years. And seeing him in tears when he found out, I was upset because I wanted to see him in concert. I got ripped off by his diagnosis. I will always love him, and we have to remember him for what he’s given us through his love.
I am 60. Listening since childhood. Love him!

Neil you are a diamond! I have listened to your music since the 60's. I've seen you in concert and danced in the aisle! My husband was diagnosed with PD in 2021. You are an inspiration.
Diamond is, by far, the greatest artist n songwriter ever! His voice n stage presence is exceptional!! He will always be known as being Number 1!!👍❤️
I am heartbroken of what I just learned. Neil is one of my favorite singers and I could say we grew old together. Getting old is nothing for cowards. Best of everything to you!!!
Even though I've seen Neil live several times in his heyday, he still amazes me.
Kudos to Anthony Mason for this great interview. Mason seems like the therapist we all need at some point point in our lives.
I listen to Neil Diamond at least once a week 😉'Forever In Blue Jeans' is one of my favorites ❤🎉😍
He has written SO MANY amazing songs that it's hard to choose a favorite. I like Forever in Blue Jeans, too, but also love "Remember Me", "Common Ground", the entire Longfellow Serenade album, "As If", "Play Me", "Dry Your Eyes", and, of course, his most iconic song, "I Am, I Said". He sings many of the songs written and originally performed by others better than the original. He has such an amazing voice. Yeah, I REALLY LOVE Neil Diamond.
Original, unvarnished and honest, just like his music. The GOAT!
Indupidably
Beautifully said. There's absolutely nobody else like him. Never will be.
Yes
There is just something about Diamonds music and his performance. He energizes the crowd and draws ppl together.
We love you Neil ..not just like your…love you❣️
I have so much respect for this man. He was a mainstay during my youth in the 60's and 70's. He was bigger than big ! A real honest to God talent ! I'm so sorry to hear of his illness. His life and talent has inspired so many. What a LEGACY he has ! God Bless you Neil ! You are a LEDGEND and always will be..... It was so good, so good, so good ! 💙
But….you are a star Mr. Diamond. Your music is one of the kind with a forward moving force that serves as inspiration. I grew up with you on the radio, a soundtrack to my life. A good human being. Bless you.
No other singer brought me as much joy as this man and his songs!
He’s the best! As soon as you hear the first bars of the song you know it’s Neal Diamond!! He has so, so many hits!! Song Sung Blue, Sweat Caroline, etc., etc.,!! Got to see the musical!! ❤ and good health to you Neal!!🎶🎵🎶
I'm in my seventies and remember my mom (and also the older of my two nephews) attending Neil Diamond concerts in Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as Indianapolis, Indiana, totaling four unforgettable treats for our souls. Mom and I also went to see The Jazz Singer, and when the movie was done, we looked at each other in total agreement and stayed to watch it again! Neil's biography song, Brooklyn Roads, remains my favorite of his songs, but there are several others, from Sunday Sun to Juliet and from Red, Red Wine to America and many more. During my thirty years as a truck driver, I sang along with Neil for countless hours and in all kinds of weather. He never ceased to amaze me with his writing AND singing straight from the heart! That Neil and Anthony Mason did this interview right now, in 2023, is another of the miracles of our lives, for we get to see a man with so much heart and soul, facing his last years of life with a dignity and grace that are unparalleled. Like Cracklin' Rosie and Forever in Blue Jeans, Beautiful Noise is a singalong of the soundtrack of countless lives. God has blessed us with this Brooklyn-born boy, Neil Leslie Diamond, and we shall always be blessed, comforted, uplifted, and made better for every day of his life and forever!
He is a fine and great artist!!!!!! I love everyone of his song's!!!!! A true legend, with a beautiful voice.... ❤❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹🌹.....
One of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. I was lucky enough to see him live in 1996. It was a sublime experience. I had to be the only dude in the crowd under 50 at the time. Man, what a show. I also saw the KISS Reunion show that year. Hard to saw which had the greater energy, spectacle. Seriously, Neil Diamond is a once in a generation talent.
I grew up listening to Diamond, my best friends Mom listened to him nonstop.... In the ‘90s I had the privilege of working for Neil locally in LA, for his rehearsals before tours, many different times, and in 1999 I got to tour with Neil. We spent NYE celebrating the millennial in Denver. Such great memories, such a great group of production people he has had behind the scenes for a lifetime! Godspeed Neil. Thanks for the great memories!
NEIL YOU GOT A LOT OF FANS WHO LOVE YOUR MUSIC KEEP YOU IN PRAYER ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You just have to love Neil Diamond! What a performer! I was blessed to see him 3 times in concert. I hope his musical travels near me.
I've loved this man and his music my entire life. Thank you mom and dad for having such great taste. What a blessing indeed.
I love Neil Diamond and was fortunate to see him in concert in the early 90's. He's a living legend.
His songs make me happy. Thank you Neil Diamond.
I met him in Albany NY in the early 90s, him in a T-shirt, Bermuda shorts and sandals while noshing on a bagel. Great person, smart, talented, interesting...
How lucky you were to get to meet him in person!
One of the best to ever do it. Love u Neil. Parkinson's sucks.
You were my sunshine so many times when my skies were gray!! Just listening and watching you in a concert or in the solitude of my small studio in NYC….and stil goes on so many times and in so many places. I embrace you and THANK YOU ! I wish you continued love and happiness …and a smile that will warm your heart.
I play his music nearly everyday. It lifts my spirits.
I am not a Diamond fan. But this reminded me of my cousin Greg's story. It made me cry.
