JULIET - NEIL DIAMOND (1969)
Written in 1969, when Neil was a young 28 year old, this is a short, sweet and rather simple love song. Oh yes, love can be sweet but is it ever simple?
In spite of the straightforward lyrics, there still seems to be a. bit of a story here. And it contains some element of pain, because it all seems to have stretched over a long period of time. He was "wrapped up in daydreams" which didn't help him. It started when he was a young boy....

and in fact, it seems like there was no response for so long. We know how one can pine for a sign of love. He was "' 'bout (about) to give up trying " when he saw her standing there and realised that she had actually "gone and loved" him.
Well, one wonders which story in Neil's llfe this was? Perhaps it was just something fictional, something he dreamed up as a creative songwriter. But that is not really so important. What does matter is that the song ends on a bright note because the singer's long standing love, which was not returned before, is finally requited. And that would have made him happy. Which is what we all want.

Some clips have been taken from the recording of a previous concert uploaded on UA-cam (Hot August Night 2012, if I am correct), It was uploaded by others and the credit is very much theirs. Of course, I did edit some of those clips by splitting them in places....

This song was written by Roger Miller and first released in 1966. Neil Diamond's version was released as part of the Stones album in October 1971. A fairly large number of singers have covered the song. However, for Neil Diamond fans, when he sings a song, his version becomes their favourite one. He just brings something special to every song he sings. 'Hope you will enjoy the song and video.

An old old song from the 1960's. The refreshing young voice of Cliff Richard, knighted in 1995 to become Sir Cliff Richard. We used to sing and dance along to Congratulations, Devil Woman, Summer Holiday - it was a different time. Love his voice. I do hope you will enjoy the song and video.

This song is from Neil Diamond's "Serenade" album released in 1974. One can listen to it many times and one doesn't get tired of it. Somehow, one relates to the song. Some people have "seen the light,"...... maybe because they have light in their own eyes.....or in their voice. And when they sing, they can - at least with some of their songs - light up their listener's soul.

This beautiful song "Close to You" by Karen Carpenter is used in this short video to pay homage to Neil Diamond. This is why I have added it to the "ND favourites" playlist although the song is not one of his own. The photo of Neil signing autographs is credited to Chris Walters. @@Nas18 I've been a fan of Neil Diamond since the mid-70s. What is remarkable is his lyrics, his voice and then of course the arrangement. In his songs, he often tells a whole story -- like in "Brooklyn Roads". The last lines of that song give me goosebumps (even as I merely think of them.) "Does some other young boy come home to my room? Does he dream what I did As he stands by my window And looks out on those Brooklyn roads?" There are far too many ND song lyrics I love to start listing them here. One of the best is his deeply philosophical song "Done too Soon." The last lines of that song goes -- "And each one there Has one thing shared They have sweated beneath the same sun Looked up in wonder at the same moon And wept when it was all done For bein' done too soon For bein' done too soon For bein' done . . . This is such a heartbreaking song. One that seems to evoke the same sense of loss & hurt in him as the lyrics of Solitary Man ( possibly because at that stage in his life it might have been his first love that betrayed him) . This even more so perhaps because of the length of time they’d been together, the deceptions and possibly the loss of the lives they had created in that time span. Or maybe because he anticipated that this relationship was for life and he found it hard to accept that that wasn’t going to be the case. So many in this world can identify with him here. It’s a shame that this wasn’t released as a single. You don’t bring me flowers is another relationship breakup song that was also released as a single… why not this one? Ethos’s it’s waa too painful a memory or personal ?

Well, at the time he wrote and sang this song, I believe that events that were happening or had happened in his personal life caused him to be deeply hurt. But as fans who care about him, we can be glad he found someone who gave him much happiness again. And the songs he wrote after that demonstrate this fact.
